When you hit the Ebony 2012 Power 100 list – sharing the spotlight with
Oprah, Toni Morrison, Ava DuVernay, LeBron James and more, it’s only natural
to think, “This is it. I’ve made it!” Right?
Well, that’s what I thought you’d think. And, I did, too, having yet to be inducted
into the elite club.
Lamar and Ronnie Tyler had seen the promised land. That’s why I was
surprised when I learned he didn’t feel quite as pleased as one would expect.
When I asked Lamar about his night withthe stars, he mentioned that he didn’t
just want to be in the room…
He wanted to be in the front of the room. What the…??
How could my friend and mentor-in-my-head be so brash? He rubbed elbows
with 99 super entities of our generation. “Give me a shot,” I thought. “I’d love
to be in the back of that room.“
And then all that ‘tude was knocked down my throat when I saw the article

So, he worked and he worked and he worked. He embodied the mantra “don’t
get bitter, get better.” And you already know…the next year ET was on the
field, in the huddle inspiring his beloved team.
And that was the “Aha!” moment for me. This phenomenal man and
inspirational speaker put it into perspective for me. He, too, had lived very
close to the dream, but wanted more.
Lamar was supremely grateful for what he had, too. However, like all the
greats, sitting in the back isn’t enough. They want more. The best turn that
gratitude into an action item. Something like “be greater” goes on their mental
to-do list.

And that’s why I’m always sitting at the feet of Lamar and Ronnie within the
blogosphere, as it were. Lamar doesn’t ever rest on being “good.” Heck. The
truly successful don’t even want to be great. They want to be the greatest. As
long as they have breath in their body, there is another level for them.
ET, The Hip Hop Preacher, as Thomas has been dubbed, had the chance to
attend the opening game of his hometown NFL team, the Lions, as an honored
guest. He had worked hard for another NFL team and as a “thank you” they
invited him to their skybox. There was only one problem for Thomas: it wasn’t
as a guest of the Lions, or as their inspiration. Although grateful, he wasn’t
satisfied.
It’s a hard lesson to discern from the view down here. I only see the current
(super) peak Lamar and Ronnie have achieved. Their view from the top? All the
other mountains left they’re tasking themselves to climb.

These 5 Books Show You How

It was reported that last month Oprah Winfrey made anywhere from $42 to 60
million in one day.
One. Day.
Oprah Winfrey purchased a ten percent stake in Weight Watchers in October
of this year, which sent the stock rising. This means Winfrey’s newly bought
stock made her more money than most expect to make in their lifetimes.
There are those who are a bit upset. Does Oprah need another stack of cash?
There are those who are proud of her. Yes! Another Oprah win; we knew she
couldn’t do any wrong. And then there are those who want to know exactly how
she did it so we can repeat the process.
If you, like me, are in that last category I have some surprising news. We can
do it, too! Yes, there are some key ingredients to Oprah Winfrey’s $60M
payday, and they can all be found in five of my favorite books.
Now since this is one of my first Huffington Post pieces, let me introduce
myself briefly. I am in business with someone who worked with Ms. Winfrey.

That’s it. That’s the intro. I work with a millionaire who was mentored by two
billionaires and I think that gives me the inside track on how we, too, can make
big, bold Oprah business moves ourselves.
So let’s get to the books, shall we?

The Millionaire Mastermind Starter Kit
1. Maximum Achievement: Strategies And Skills That Will Unlock Your
Hidden Powers To Succeed by Brian Tracy. This book is pretty much just
like The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, but from one man’s experiences instead of in
collaboration format. In the book Tracy does give us secrets to using a positive
mindset, and proves his point with his own rags to riches story, case studies
from being a business coach, and even Bible verses to prove his points.
As it pertains to Oprah Winfrey’s success and eventually yours and my
success, the part of this book where you need to focus on is positive thoughts
and thinking big. Last year at Oprah Winfrey’s The Life You Want Tour,
Winfrey recounted her early years where she proclaimed she knew she was
destined for a “better” life. She may not have seen a day where she made
$60M or so, but as Tracy teaches in Maximum Achievement, belief in better for
yourself and affirming with words that “it” is out there for you is a very good
(and profitable) first step.
Two of my favorite affirmations I’ve adapted from Tracy are:
“Something wonderful is going to happen today.”
And then there’s “The universe is conspiring to make me happy.”
Telling yourself to expect greatness every day is one of the easiest things you
can do to put you on the path to greatness.
Tracy directs his readers in goal setting techniques, too. Writing down your
goals is super important and a form of affirmation and envisioning for your life
that will help you get to your $60M payday. Based on what I’ve learned in
Maximum Achievement and in Oprah Winfrey’s latest move I can guarantee you
Ms. Winfrey hasn’t stopped thinking and affirming big for herself and we need
to do the same.

2. 48 Laws Of Power by Robert Greene.When I was in college I would fall
asleep in honors history. It wasn’t interesting or applicable to real life. Greene’s
book is 48 history lessons and every one of them is an awakening! The
storytelling, the application to real life, there are fables; all of these things drive
each of his 48 laws home. There are ten I want to point out that are specific to
Winfrey’s deal with Weight Watchers.
a. Create a cult: play on people’s need to believe. Winfrey is the master
Pied Piper. I wouldn’t say she created a cult; that’s Greene’s definition of this
law. However, she can lead millions to buy her favorite things, read books in a
society that has seem to become big screen obsessed, switch television
networks - all with one or two words. People need to believe they can lose
weight and who better to lead them to that conclusion than Winfrey. This
played into the larger goal of creating wealth for Winfrey in that not only did
Winfrey’s fans buy stock immediately to create this immediate, massive one-
day wealth, but they will now buy the weight loss products and subscriptions.
Do you have your cult?
b. Enter action with boldness. I’ve got to admit, I think Winfrey buying stock
in a weight loss system is crazy bold. She’s often tried to lose weight and
succeeded only to gain the weight back. If I were her (and I’m not) I would be
a bit too scared that people wouldn’t be enthused with this purchase because
they may believe I personally am not going to succeed again. Not Winfrey.
She’s bold and that’s what we need to learn from this move. As a side note and
I’ll mention it again, but her mindset is different and that’s what we need to
learn if we want such huge payoffs to our endeavors.
c. So much depends on reputation. Going back to Winfrey’s reputation for
weight loss and weight gain; it doesn’t matter. What matters is that she has a
bigger reputation for picking winners. Buying Weight Watchers stock is an
endorsement not in Winfrey’s success, but in the success of the product itself.
What are you doing to build the reputation of success?

d . Surrender tactic: transform weakness into power. Again, the weight
loss. Winfrey has never hidden from the fact she has an on again off again
weight struggle. Buying stock in Weight Watchers embraces this weakness and
says she’s willing to try again. That’s transforming weakness into power!
e . Concentrate your forces. Winfrey has influence, power, finesse, mass
appeal, authenticity, and money. Not an exhaustive list, but these positioned
her to win and win big even for a billionaire. What forces do you have that you
can combine to make YOU win bigger than you ever have?
f. Master the art of timing. We are entering a season where, in the United
States, people are prone to overeat. That is followed by a season of wanting
to lose weight. Could Winfrey have had better timing in becoming a player in
the weight loss game? She’s riding the wave and we should, too.
g. Never appear too perfect. Of course, making that much loot in one day
screams perfection. Again Winfrey is shining a light on not only her need to lose
weight (although I think she’s looking great and confident these days), but also
on the repeated conversations people have had about her failures in the same
arena. Doesn’t matter. The law of power says that Winfrey is doing the perfect
thing by not appearing too perfect.
h. Make your accomplishments seem effortless. I don’t know when I’ve ever
seen someone make so much and talk so little. The part amazing people about
this stock buy is we never heard about it. With all the interviews Winfrey does
(she was on the cover of Fast Company the week the news of the stock buy
went public), there was never any talk about her next move or her trying
something new. She also hasn’t come on any of the shows to talk about how
hard the process was. Nope. This could have been her hardest venture yet, but
you won’t hear that from her. It’s a law of power and Winfrey obeys the law.

i. Play to people’s fantasies. Most people think that what Winfrey did this
week was something only she or other rich people can do. So with that
vantage point this “windfall” of money played into their fantasies. However, as
these five books point out, it isn’t a fantasy at all, but something we can all
accomplish.
3. How Rich People Think by Steve Siebold.I’m about 80 chapters into this
100 chapter book. Don’t worry. Each “chapter” is more like a meaty paragraph
followed by recommended reading, critical thinking questions, and action steps.
The book focuses on middle class thinking versus world-class thinking; as a
matter of fact each chapter title gets straight to that point. As the middle class
we’ve been taught some very limiting things. We aren’t taught to think in a non-
linear way, and it hampers our success. In a nutshell we are taught hard work
will pay off, when in fact physical labor isn’t the key. Money follows ideas.
Middle class thinking is to believe working hard or being busy or even sitting at
a desk and typing is the key to building wealth, when world-class thinkers, who
have usually amassed their wealth from being broke and then having a
marketable idea, know that your mind is where your fortune is. Like in Tracy’s
book which I mentioned earlier, until you know what you don’t know about how
to think yourself rich is presented to you, you can’t even conceive of a move
like Winfrey’s. Once your mind is opened to thought leaders who I’ve found to
repeatedly talk about the universe and energy and focusing on the big ideas
versus the big paychecks, you will immediately see a difference in how big you
can dream and how big you can execute. This is why Winfrey didn’t just dabble
in a stock purchase, but went all in; it’s how rich people think.

4. The Wealth Choice: Success Secrets Of Black Millionaires by Dennis
Kimbro. Although this book chronicles the secrets of Black millionaires, it is the
perfect read for all who hope to aspire to be wealthy. Kimbro shows it is truly a
choice to be wealthy as he tells the stories of sometimes broken, homeless,
resource-less, network-less people who went on to amass great wealth. These
millionaires also were lead to big paydays by big ideas. They didn’t give into
convention and let their circumstances dictate their outcomes. That’s a choice
you can make. Those who make it are among the wealthiest of us today. You
don’t have to be born rich. You just need to make a decision that you want to
be and then work towards that goal.
5. Confidence: How Winning Streaks And Losing Streaks Begin And End
by Rosabeth Moss Kanter. This book can be summed up with one Amazon,
three-star review title: “Great concept! Wish it had been a better read.” I’m not
going to say this is the best read out there, but the book makes great points
and the one that applies here? Winners expect to win so they do. Winfrey has
been winning for three or four decades; some would argue all six of her life.
She expects to win. How can we do that? How can we gain the confidence of
say a Michael Jordan, the New York Yankees, or Duke’s basketball team when
they are firing on all cylinders and winning championship after championship?
First let me tell you that for the reason listed above - people may see Winfrey
as a loser when it comes to weight loss - Winfrey’s investment in this company
could have yielded in what could be called lukewarm results by regular people
standards. She could have invested and the stock not double in price. She
could have only slightly moved the needle for the company or not at all. Did you
laugh at that last statement? Well, that’s because we all have confidence in
Winfrey’s “Oprah effect,” and so does Winfrey.

What’s your effect? Do you have confidence, I mean burning, surefire
confidence, that when you start something, do something different, create a
new product, build a new relationship, write for a new publication - do you do it
with the utmost confidence? It is imperative that you do because winners win.
So there you have it, the secret Oprah Winfrey formula for making $60M in
2015 that you can use for a successful 2016. Speak with belief, act with
power, cultivate world-class thoughts, choose wealth, and do it all with
confidence!
I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’m a mom who works at home and my favorite
place to think is the shower. Siebold mentions a lot of rich people use the
shower as their thinking space. Anyway, I have a habit of doing a power pose
and affirming, “I am Oprah Winfrey powerful!” while in the shower.
Understanding that the tool she used - her steadfast belief in her abilities - to
become who she is is available to all of us is an important step. Take it, affirm
it.

6 Power Plays
Entrepreneurs Can Learn From
Serena Williams

Winners always find new ways to win. Are you doing what you need to elevate
your game?
I’m sitting here watching my favorite part of any sporting event: the hype.
Serena Williams, one of professional tennis’ most dominant figures in recent
times, is getting ready to play at Wimbledon again, and when the
commentators and experts start weighing in and breaking down the match, my
heart skips a beat. Great competitors are learners and I know that, as an
entrepreneur, my ability to absorb the lessons of champions is going to move
my business forward.
During the Wimbledon chatter discussing Serena Williams’ match withMaria
Sharapova, an opponent Williams has dominated in previous matches, it was
mentioned that Williams did what some entrepreneurs fail to do: change their
mindset.
Williams has hired a new coach, and with that has come the new techniques
she employs to play matches. The decision has made a formidable champion
even better and I’m all for becoming a better entrepreneur.
Here are some mindset shifts entrepreneurs may want to consider if they are
to improve their game.
1. Find dynamic mentors. Obtaining a coach or mentor is imperative for
entrepreneurs. Yet, even with a proven mentor, you always need different
perspectives from different industries in your ear. Remember, you really are
the result of the five people closest to you. It may feel bad to say that your
current crew who got you to this point can’t push you further, but upgrading the
minds around you is necessary. You need experts who will push and
encourage you to be your best, having seen the proven results of their
expertise.

2. Be open to change. Your competition changes so your game plan has to
as well. Periscope just hit the market and everyone is going for the marketing
gold there. I’m not saying it is for everyone, but I am saying that, as
entrepreneurs, we need to check out the shiny new toys our customers are
loving. Even if it isn’t the best for our business, we may see an opportunity in
our current marketing and tweak what we are doing to compete. For example,
if you are a YouTube person now, I see a great similarity in how Periscope is
taking over in the same way reality TV took over television. Reality TV is here
to stay, but scripted television is also coming back (see shows like Power and
Empire). For those YouTubers who can stay the course, I think they’ll retain
customers and even find some new ones in the wake of most non-video
content creators joining the Periscope phenomenon. They will, however, have
to be open to a few changes to stay competitive.
3. Motivate yourself. No matter who Williams’ coaches have been throughout
her career, her work on the court is self-motivated. Mentors and coaches help
get the self-motivation conversations started, but when you are at pitch
competitions or wining and dining that new client, you are there on your own.
You need to learn to tap into your motivation reserves when you fumble, forget
a fact, or just plain don’t get the deal. But you have to keep knocking on doors.
Winners always find new ways to win. Are you doing what you need to elevate
your game?
4. Cheer for yourself. Have you ever seen Serena when she knows she’s
winning? I swear she’s her biggest fan and supporter. Are you your biggest
fan and supporter? We all need outside “rah-rah” folks, but nobody knows
how hard you are working better than you. You deserve to jump and shout
even if the win seems small – especially if the win seems small.

5. Realize you are human. The commentators on Williams’ game were very
complimentary to the now 21 title holder, but they had no problem telling us
where her game can still improve. If you haven’t made all the money in your
market, you still have plenty to learn. However, we all do. Remember that
you are human and make sure you learn from your mistakes. You also want to
start delegating your weaknesses to someone who is stronger at that task.
Winners adjust.
6. Stay in this moment. Williams’ goals are her own, but the press puts a lot
of pressure on her to win. What’s her response? Winning each point as they
come and staying in this moment. We, as entrepreneurs, have plenty on our
plates, for sure, and you need to have goals for growth. However, don’t
squander the opportunity to love where you are right now. Make sure you are
giving yourself the encouragement, accolades, and even the resources you
need now. “Someday” will come, but you need to prepare for it today by being
the best you can in this moment. Laser focus now will be the power play you
need for future success.
Champions make it look easy, but they didn’t get to the top without being willing
pupils. Take these five lessons I’ve learned from Serena Williams and watch
your game go straight to the top.

3 Lessons Entrepreneurs Can
Learn When The Beat Drops

Super Bowl Monday is an honored and sacred time when fans gather to talk
about all things Super Bowl: the game, the plays, the winners, the losers, the
commercials—and the halftime show.
And in reflecting on the show as entrepreneurs, we should take every
opportunity to learn what we can from titans like Missy Elliot, who made a
surprise appearance with headliner Katy Perry.
Elliot was quite the talk of the Super Bowl halftime show, and when the
proverbial Missy beat dropped, so did the jaws of millions. Why? Well, the
reasons have a few educational nuggets for business owners and enterprising
professionals.
1. Wow the crowd in ways they don’t expect. Katy Perry is a Radio Disney
favorite, and most of us were expecting her first guest, Lenny Kravitz. Although
this combo was pretty hot performing Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl And I Liked It,”
there weren’t any get-up-and-dance moments prior to Elliot hitting the stage.
And that’s where we were wowed!
Elliot and Perry didn’t seem the likely Sunday-night combo. As entrepreneurs
you have to keep with your current offerings but remember to collaborate or go
outside of the norm to really bring attention to your business or your products.
Mix it up in your marketing and your approaches to service. Not every client will
like everything about your business, but they all want to be wowed.
2. Legends stay relevant. Elliot has a great, recognizable product. Her beats
are legendary, and when you hear them, you can’t help but know whose song
is playing.

Many feel she hasn’t put out a hit in several years and thus shouldn’t have been
a featured guest during the Katy Perry billed halftime show. But, guess what?
Any beat drop associated with her, and we are all transported to a dance floor.
What you build today can make you millions for years to come if you work hard
at being recognized time and time when people come in contact with your
products or see your logo. Build your brand to create a lasting memory and
legacy. In the long run that will make you much more than being an
entrepreneur for the fast buck. Remember if #LegendsStayRelevant they have
to be relevant to start.
3. Put in the work. To make it to any big stage, you have to put in work.
There were a lot of people who think Missy should have had her own halftime
show. I agree, but I don’t take away from what she accomplished last night.
She wasn’t selling or promoting anything; she was just there to do what she
has always done. However, not just anyone can get that call; she was there to
ignite the crowd and give the halftime show some street cred(ibility). Everyone
knows Missy is a professional with a great show and stage presence even
though it has been a while since last we saw her. That’s because she puts in
the work. As entrepreneurs we also have to do just that so when the call
comes for us to be on the big stage we are ready no matter how far down the
road the call may come. Everyone wants to play the Super Bowl, but are you
ready to put in the hours, lose the sleep, make the investment to get there?

Bonus: Make the big decisions: One of the last calls of this particular Super
Bowl resulted in the game being lost within seconds. It honestly happens to all
of us; we say the wrong thing to a client, quote too high or too low, pass up
opportunities on principle and then they turn out to be great moves for
someone else. Be ready to defend your decisions as an entrepreneur, learn
from them, and then keep moving. As an entrepreneur you won’t get
everything right the first (or second or third) time, but you can’t let the fear of
making decisions stop you.
5 Smart Ways To Maximize
Your Potential
For A Business Mentor

Smart hustlers know that success leaves clues. My biggest source of
breadcrumbs has been my mentors. I've been fortunate to be mentored by
millionaires who knew and worked for billionaires, television personalities, and
a host of others.
What I've learned and gained from those experiences has been so invaluable
that I now own three businesses which connect world-class entrepreneurs to
my community of up and coming entrepreneurs. When these world-class
mentors are introduced to my community, there is inevitably someone who
wants to be mentored by them one-on-one.
Being on fire about the advice someone gives during a podcast and taking
specific advice from them to better your business are two different things. All
mentors leave clues, and you need to find the one that is going to leave the
best clues for you.
Here's how to approach a business mentor so you can be the mentee they
don't know they need - yet.

1. Do Your Research
One of the ways I've found my mentors was offhandedly hearing their story.
When I started blogging and met my mentor, I was on welfare. It turns out
that this mentor had been fired from a high-profile position. The fact that she'd
turned what looked to be a failing into a victory was exactly what I needed.
Other mentors might not have understood that, and they definitely couldn't
have shown me how to craft my story to inspire others.
Your business mentor needs to understand your past and your future plans to
be effective for you.
2. Invest in Time with Them
Attend conferences where they are speaking, read their books, attend their
webinars, be in their space both virtually and physically. Become an active
member of their community. Before you ever approach someone for their help,
help them by being in their audience. No matter how big someone is, they
investigate their community, and if you are an ad hoc leader within it, they will
certainly notice. So become a member of the Facebook group who
contributes, comment on their blog posts, volunteer at their events, share their
interviews on social media. This investment of your time is a great way to
show them you are serious about what they have to share and what they are
building.

3. Offer Them Your Value
Before renowned matchmaker and entrepreneur Paul C. Brunson became my
mentor and business partner, I sent him countless ideas for his business. I
even offered him my editing services. He didn't immediately use any of my
ideas or services; however, when the time came and he needed to add to his
business, I was top of mind. When you offer on-target, relevant, thought out
ideas to your mentor you show two things: you are willing to put in the work to
find out what they need, and you have value to them. Mentors shouldn't be
seen as a "give me your knowledge" type of deal. Going with your hand out
makes you like everyone else. Taking something of value to them makes you
stand out.
4. Take Action on Their Advice
If you really want to bring the "wow" factor when you are courting your mentor-
to-be, use their advice. Showing that you are open and ready to do not just
work but the work they have outlined in their courses is a smart hustle move.
You want to learn from this person and success leaves clues. Being a self-
starter; starting before the formal mentorship begins; not only does that show
your mentor-to-be that you are serious, it also helps you move your business
forward faster if your perfect business mentor isn't available.

5. Be Genuine
Remember, your mentor probably gets tons of requests for their (free) time
and expertise. Let them know you are looking to start a mentoring relationship
with them. Tell them why you believe their specific experience and knowledge
will benefit you and how your knowledge and experience will benefit them and
their current projects. Also, if they can't help you at this moment, be gracious
and let them know you will continue to support them (and do!). Ask if you can
stay in touch. Your preferred business mentor may not have the time for a
formal relationship today; however, most will take the time to answer a few
questions or point you to their favorite resources if you show them you are truly
respectful of them.

can't refuse? You got this.
