7. Patrick Uden From 1963 Patrick studied Design at Sidcup School of Art, then won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art Film School graduating in 1969 with an MA in Film & Television. He joined the BBC Science Department in 1970. He left in 1982 to set-up one of the UK’s first independent production companies, Uden Associates Ltd. It produced a vast range of factual programmes and made the documentary with the highest ever audience for Channel Four. Patrick closed Uden Associates in 2003 to explore new applications for documentary. Since 2004, Patrick has helped redefine ‘reality TV’ by visualising hard-edged, high production-value factual series such as The Apprentice and The Restaurant.

12. Additional funding available for 19+ students. If you are over 19 and studying a Level 3 qualification you may be entitled to funding from the Skills Account. This funding can help with course fees, travel costs, childcare etc. If you wish to apply, you must do so by Monday 8th March 2010. Please go to EST to gain advice on how to apply.

13. Functional Skills English Exams Confetti wishes FS9 and MS9 students the best of luck in their Functional English exams this week! FS9: Thursday 4th March 9:00am in S020 MS9: Thursday 4th March 12:00noon in S020 Please see your personal tutor or Skills Tutor if you would like some additional help in preparing for this very important examination.

14. Thursday 4th March is World Book Day Regular reading will improve your vocabulary, spelling and fluency when writing. You’ll soon find some Quick Reads titles available in the Confetti library to help get you started!

17. Castle Radio The new Castle College AM Radio Station is to be set up to run along the lines of a Student Union society. This gives Confetti students many exiting opportunities in terms of helping to run the station and providing or developing content for transmission. 18. No smoking outside reception Please be reminded the centre courtyard is the only space where you are permitted to smoke on Confetti premises. You must not smoke outside reception or under the covered section of the courtyard. For information on how to quit, visit http://smokefree.nhs.uk/

19. Facebook / YouTube in the LRC Facebook and YouTube are now blocked on the LRC computers. This is in response to a large number of requests from students who have been unable to access a machine to complete course work. If you would like to check your emails or use Facebook or YouTube, the computers in the student cafe were updated over half term to allow access with your Confetti username and password. Give them a try!

20. YouthBytes In addition to these upgrades, you will notice a small widget on the top right hand side of your desk top in the LRC and in the café. It includes handy calendar and calculator apps and is regularly updated with valuable information and advice regarding your health. As you spot an update that you’d like to learn more about, just click on the link!

21. Calling all BND Music Tech Students! We’re putting together a Confetti CD of BND Music Technology student tracks and we want your tunes! The best tracks will be chosen by a panel of tutors, mastered and put on to a CD which will be given to visitors and future students of Confetti. They could even be featured on the Confetti website! For your chance to appear on the CD please give your track to your personal tutor or email an mp3 to peter.fletcher@confetti-ict.com. Tracks must be submitted by Friday 26th March 2010 at the latest.

22. Cultural Calendar Mon 1 Mar- Shushan Purim (Jewish ) In some places Purim is celebrated one day later. In this case it is called Shushan Purim. Mon 1 Mar- Hola Mohalla (Lunar Calendar)(Sikh ) Hola Mohalla is three day festival of military exercises and mock battles, together with religious discussions and devotional music, at Anandpur Sahib on the day after Holi. Mon 1 Mar- St David's Day (Christian ) Saint David, or Dewi Sant as he's called in the Welsh language, is the patron saint of Wales. Tue 2 Mar- Nineteen Day Fast (start) (Bahai ) Ends 20 March. During this period Baha'is go without food or drink from sunrise to sunset. Wed 3 Mar- Hina-matsuri - Festival of Dolls (Shinto ) Celebrates daughters in the family Wed 3 Mar- Milad un Nabi (Shia) (Muslim ) Birthday of the Prophet Muhammad. Sunni Muslims celebrate this 5 days earlier. Some Muslims do not approve of celebrating the birthday, and regard doing so as a religious innovation. Fri 5 Mar- St Piran's Day (Christian ) Piran is regarded as the patron saint of Cornwall and tin miners. He was born in Ireland. The Cornish flag may have been inspired by the legend that Piran discovered the process for smelting tin: black rock with a white cross of pure metal.
