Ever wanted to become an actor? Ifyoudidansweryes to thatquestion, I’dreplywith “youlackambition”. I didn’t want to becomeanactor, I wanted to become the boss of actors: the director.
There is onlyone place thatreallymattersfor directors withambition: Hollywood.
Hollywood = storytelling paradise. Hollywood is loadedwithpeoplethatspendtheirlife in search of the perfect story. Motivatedbylovefor the craft… and the possibiliy of lots of dollars.
Stories are with us from the beginning Because a good story resonateswitheveryone. Stories are what we learnedfromwhen we werestillkids, stories are what we humanslove and thuswhat we are willing to payfor.
1 minute story pitch To get back to Hollywood: In Hollywood, story pitchesexist, where the ideaof a story is sold. Just the idea. Isn’titdamnridiculoustopay a lot of money forjustanidea?
Groundhog Day was pitched in one of those storypitches Google Bob Kosberg if you want proof. This is how the pitch went: “A cranky, rude man has to relive the worst day of his life over and over again until he gets it right. When he does, he finds true love.”
Insert idea Take story Thisidea of pitchingonlyworksifthere is anoiled machine thatcantransformrawmaterials (ideas) into real stories…
…Andthat machine exists. It existsbecausepeople in hollywood have spentagescraftingandrefining the secretformulatotransformideas in greatstories. The formulagoeslikethis:
P (2CL1CL) + PR = P5
P (2CL1CL) + PR = P5 The protagonist P has a second choice life (2CL). He drinks toomuch, is lonely, has a boring job,… He wants toprogressto a first choice life (1CL), has a dream of a better life, but no urgencyto act uponityet.
P (2CL1CL) + PR = P5 At a certain moment, he’sactivated. He encounters a problem (P); falls in love with a girl, getskidnapped,… He triestosolve the problemby means of a plan, but he willneed up to 5 plans (P5) tosolve it.
His one but final plan willteach the protagonist that he willneedto get rid of his second choice life beforebeingabletosolve the problem. He willreach the point of no return, whereitseemsthat he will never get the girl/beat the bad guy, but thenfinds courage for his last, succeedingplan.
Let’s take anexample in thisguy, BDS. *(person actually present during the presentation)
Say he falls in love withthislovelyyoung lady, KDC Sheloveshimtoo, end of story, zero tension, BORING.
Don K.A. We needtension. Say BDS leads a second choice life as a member of a criminalorganisation lead by Don K.A.  BDS isn’t a real criminalbynature, but he never felt the urgent needto get out of the organisationeither…
Up tillnowthat is. KDC has her principles, andwill never ever start anaffairwith a criminal. No sir!
Soafter a couple of plans to meet eachother (3), he asks her to run awaywithhim. Whenshealmostsays yes, Don K.A. getshim back by brute force, andallseemstobe lost. Point of no return.
So BDS has tocome up withan extreme plan, breakingwith his criminal life forevertobeableto get his girl. The only way is tokill the Don… The Don must Die.
So he does succeed in the end, andthey live happily ever after.
Concepts touse in a presentation: PR 2e CL P5 Remember: tensioncomesfrom a second choice life (youraudienceshould feel this), a problem(youraudienceneeds a sense of urgency) and5 plans (youneedtobuild up tensionbeforeresolving)

Everything has been triedbefore.Every story has been told. Re-use, reshuffle, stealandtransform. Good artists copy, great artists steal
Michael Jackson: 1983 David Bowie: 1974 Marcel Marceau: 1940 Afterall, Michael Jackson stole his world-famousmoonwalkfrom David Bowie, whostoleitfrom a mime student of Marcel Marceau. Whocaresaboutthat? No-one does.
Be versatile. Ifyou talk business, thinkaboutwhatyourMonday-evening dancing class taughtyou. Or whatyoucanusefromthatbookaboutdirectingmovies in hollywood… Creativity comes through versatility
Usethe booksyoureadto draw analogies, the musicyou listen totobuildstorylines, the presentationsyou gave in the past toinspireyou. Stealfromyourself. A lot. Capitalize on what you already do

Storytelling: What can we learn from Hollywood?

  • 3. Ever wanted to become an actor? Ifyoudidansweryes to thatquestion, I’dreplywith “youlackambition”. I didn’t want to becomeanactor, I wanted to become the boss of actors: the director.
  • 4. There is onlyone place thatreallymattersfor directors withambition: Hollywood.
  • 5. Hollywood = storytelling paradise. Hollywood is loadedwithpeoplethatspendtheirlife in search of the perfect story. Motivatedbylovefor the craft… and the possibiliy of lots of dollars.
  • 6. Stories are with us from the beginning Because a good story resonateswitheveryone. Stories are what we learnedfromwhen we werestillkids, stories are what we humanslove and thuswhat we are willing to payfor.
  • 7. 1 minute story pitch To get back to Hollywood: In Hollywood, story pitchesexist, where the ideaof a story is sold. Just the idea. Isn’titdamnridiculoustopay a lot of money forjustanidea?
  • 8. Groundhog Day was pitched in one of those storypitches Google Bob Kosberg if you want proof. This is how the pitch went: “A cranky, rude man has to relive the worst day of his life over and over again until he gets it right. When he does, he finds true love.”
  • 9. Insert idea Take story Thisidea of pitchingonlyworksifthere is anoiled machine thatcantransformrawmaterials (ideas) into real stories…
  • 10. …Andthat machine exists. It existsbecausepeople in hollywood have spentagescraftingandrefining the secretformulatotransformideas in greatstories. The formulagoeslikethis:

  • 12. P (2CL1CL) + PR = P5 The protagonist P has a second choice life (2CL). He drinks toomuch, is lonely, has a boring job,… He wants toprogressto a first choice life (1CL), has a dream of a better life, but no urgencyto act uponityet.
  • 13. P (2CL1CL) + PR = P5 At a certain moment, he’sactivated. He encounters a problem (P); falls in love with a girl, getskidnapped,… He triestosolve the problemby means of a plan, but he willneed up to 5 plans (P5) tosolve it.
  • 14. His one but final plan willteach the protagonist that he willneedto get rid of his second choice life beforebeingabletosolve the problem. He willreach the point of no return, whereitseemsthat he will never get the girl/beat the bad guy, but thenfinds courage for his last, succeedingplan.

  • 19. Soafter a couple of plans to meet eachother (3), he asks her to run awaywithhim. Whenshealmostsays yes, Don K.A. getshim back by brute force, andallseemstobe lost. Point of no return.
  • 20. So BDS has tocome up withan extreme plan, breakingwith his criminal life forevertobeableto get his girl. The only way is tokill the Don… The Don must Die.
  • 21. So he does succeed in the end, andthey live happily ever after.
  • 22. Concepts touse in a presentation: PR 2e CL P5 Remember: tensioncomesfrom a second choice life (youraudienceshould feel this), a problem(youraudienceneeds a sense of urgency) and5 plans (youneedtobuild up tensionbeforeresolving)

  • 26. Everything has been triedbefore.Every story has been told. Re-use, reshuffle, stealandtransform. Good artists copy, great artists steal

  1. Home alone Opening: wie van jullie wou een acteur worden toen je klein was? Ik noem dat een tekort aan ambitie. IK wou de baas van de acteurs worden: de regisseur.
  2. Bijgevolg: En voor echte regisseurs is er maar 1 plaats op de wereld die telt: Hollywood!Ik ben er niet geraakt tot nu toe, en ben ook om een of andere reden in marktonderzoek in wondelgem terechtgekomen in plaats van in Hollywood, maar ik heb er wel boeken over gelezen..
  3. In hollywood zitten er hopen mensen die hun hele leven spenderen aan de zoektocht voor het perfecte verhaal. Want het perfecte verhaal brengt hopen dollars met zich mee.
  4. Voor logische redenen: iedereen houdt van een goed verhaal. Verhalen dienen tot socialisatie (goed versus slecht) en leren, maar ook vooral entertainment. Verhalen zijn de eerste vorm van ‘infotainment’.Iedereen heeft toch herinneringen aan verhalen uit zijn kindertijd? Ik had een casette van Reinaert de Vos dat ik helemaal grijs gedraaid heb.
  5. Om terug te komen op hollywood: Er zijn zelfs pitches in hollywood, snelle verkoopspraatjes, waarin men het IDEE van een verhaal verkoopt. In 1 minuut. Zij verdienen een JAARLOON voor slechts 1 minuut vertellen van een idee voor een verhaal.Dat is natuurlijk belachelijk, om voor een basisgrondstof als een IDEE zoveel te betalen. Beste verhalen niet uit hollywood zelf; ervaring uit de wereld is belangrijk.

  13. Nemen we mr Brent.
  14. Mr brent wordt verliefd op mevrouw Kim, zij ook op hem. End of story, zero spanning, ONINTERESSANT
  15. We hebben spanning nodig.Brent leidt een 2e keus leven. Hij is betrokken bij een criminele organisatie onder leiding van Don Kevin. Hij riskeert zijn leven dagelijks voor hem en voor de eer, maar voelt ergens dat er iets mis is. Nochtans had hij nooit een reden om uit de mafia te stappen...
  16. Ze ontmoeten elkaar, maar probleem blijkt dat Kim nogal principieel is en geen mafia kerels wil... Brent doet 3 pogingen om Kim te zien, en raakt er pas de 4e keer...
  17. Plan 4: Balkonscène waarbij ze bijna JA zegt op het plan om samen te vluchten, maar dan worden ze betrapt door iemand van HAAR familie die weet heeft van het criminele gedrag van brent en dus gaat het mis.
  18. Het laatste en meest extreme plan brengt Brent eindelijk bij Kim; als hij de Don vermoord is hij vrij, en kunnen ze samen het leven aan.
  19. Te onthouden: Spanning komt voor uit Uw publiek moet het gevoel hebben dat ze een 2e keus leven leiden. Een sub-optimale carriere bijvoorbeeld. Of niet genoeg power om mensen te helpen.Daarbovenop hebben ze een probleem, datgene dat de urgentie kweekt zodat jij daarvoor spreekt. Ingeval HR: GM ziet zijn team weglopen. En dan kan de presentator 5 plannen tentoonspreiden. Niet alles in een keer geven. We hold the key
  20. To make a long story short: Presentatie is een narratieve structuur. Kan bijvoorbeeld Hollywood film zijn, maar ook een ander type verhaal. Ik zou jullie nog enkele concrete tips willen meegeven om het leven in presentatieland gemakkelijker te maken..
  21. Nu meer concreet gaan, wat zijn punten om te onthouden voor presentatie/verhaal
  22. Spencer silver ontdekt lijm in 68 die gemakkelijk los te maken valt toen hij op zoek was naar superlijmArthur fry hoort hiervan maar doet er niets mee, tot hij in 73 in de kerk zit, en hij in zijn bijbel op zoek is naar de juiste hymnes om te zingen. Zijn papiertjes vallen constant uit de bijbel, tot ie denkt: LIJM!In 1980: echt succes van post-it door marketing. Nog steeds een van de meest succesvolle producten van 3M. Geel is trouwens toeval: een lab in de buurt had afvalpapier in’t geel – daarom zien ze nog steeds geel.Waarom post its: schrijf ideeën op. Copied ideas of gewone ideas – opschrijven op post its & repositioneren.
  23. Stelen is NIET verboden. It’s 2011 peope! Alles is al eens geprobeerd. Alles.

  25. Creativiteit door veelzijdigheid. Als je spreekt over business, kan je analogieën uit de tango gebruiken, waarbij je een stap achteruit doet bij ‘t begin (als man), en je na 3 stappen de danspartner in kruispas (ongemakkelijk) doet staan. Op’t einde kom je toch terug op een lijn. “Business and tango’ klinkt inspirerender dan ‘business’
  26. Kapitaliseer wat je doet, vind geen nieuwe dingen uit voor de 100e keer.Storytelling heb ik al gedaan, deze is uitgebreider, veel uitgebreider, maar enkele van mijn vorige verhalen zitten erin. Kopieer uzelf. Zoveel mogelijk.
  27. Aan het publiek en aan de boodschap die je wil brengen.1 verhaal kan verscheidene boodschappen overbrengen, zonder probleem. Maar je moet wel de tijd nemen om te customizen. Uw verhaal gaat er enkel beter van worden.
  28. Heb een doel wanneer je presenteert. Beantwoord aan een NEEDMijn doel is simpel: jullie laten presenteren op volgende sessies. Is zowel een doel van mezelf als een iets waar jullie mee zitten, want het wordt onvermijdelijk jullie beurt ooit. Als het iets is waarin je echt gelooft (storytelling) dan kan je ‘t overtuigend brengen. Of iets waarmee je actief bezig bent in je leven.
