  1. Working on a 5-year program we were locked into that was outlined in a lengthy plan Reporting focused on outputs Based on what I saw in the field, wondered whether we were having an impact When I look back on it today and what I learned about the lean methodology I realized that there was a problem with the how we were managing uncertainty
  2. Organizationally - Requiring planning process Internally from not having an easy way to map idea Need a tool that makes it easy for frontline staff close to problem to share ideas
  3. We are also dealing with complex and wicked problems so what appears initially as a solution can change Only have time and resources to act on a few ideas Need a faster and cheaper to uncover ideas that matter
  4. Need to test ideas early and often Focus on outcomes not outputs
  5. Need to consider more how our ideas will scale
  6. Problem of business plans Opportunity with models
  7. Content is made up but portrayed as certain Lengthy and time consuming to write and update Are out of date almost as soon as they are written Do nothing to quickly communicate the critical assumptions the idea is based on
  8. Story about how an organization creates, delivers, and captures value Fast – To prepare and to interpret, which make it easy to brainstorm and test Iterative – Easy to revise canvases as hypotheses are tested and keep current Concise –Focus on the critical aspects of the model Accessible – Easy to read, share, and communicate when gathering feedback
  9. Fits on one page Maps all crucial assumptions Can be modelled for both beneficiaries and donors
  10. Problem focus Defines what the organization is addressing Donor Actionable Metrics focused Donor and beneficiary Value, Impact, Scale Makes connection between money and mission How does the mission connect back to the money
  11. Customer segments Map both beneficiaries and donors Early adopters – how you measure those most likely to target Problem What is the mission that you are addressing with beneficiaries What is in it for the donors UVP How you are different and worth paying attention
  12. Solution statement on key features that will address the problem Critical partners if co-delivering services Key metrics Short-term – value, impact growth Cost Basic costs to test model Revenue Cost recovery What will be monetized for donors Channels Partners that are helping with reach How donors and beneficiaries first hear about program
