1. The Sign
The sign in the opening scenes of the film is a traditional way to open and
horror and western film. The sign is very old fashioned and the way it is
swinging in the wind allows it to creek giving it an eerie feel to the beginning
of the short film.
The background shows a wheat field. Which suggests that the vast land is
covered by it, letting the audience know that there is nothing around. The
camerawork allows us to see the location of the film.
2. The Crow
In Lovefield there are many close up shots of the crow. Black
crows can be seen to symbolize death. A black crow can also
be an omen, predicting that something bad will be happening
soon. The black crow could be seen to be like the black cat,
which is often to be seen as a sign of bad luck. Even thought
the crow is not a character it becomes one. The close ups of
the crow shows the audience hoe significant it is and that you
should keep a close eye on it.
3. Camera angle and Movement
The film has an awful lot of clever panning and long shots. For instance one
the screen grabs we see here is one of the phone laying in the field. The
camera pans slowly down from the side of the dusty road, through the
field and down to the phone, then following onto the blood covered cloth
and then a tensing foot. This dramatically adds lots of suspense, it scares us
into thinking the worst. The long shot of the fields and of the establishing
shots is a beautiful piece of cinematography.
4. I choose the screenshot of the tattoo because of
the design. The tattoo is faded which could imply
that he got the tattoo many years ago. The tattoo
is of a skull and the scales of justice which
contradict themselves. A skull usually represents
death or decay and the scales equality and
fairness. By looking into the tattoo it could show
that the man is confused about his beliefs and
views. At first glance the man looks working class
with his ruff dirty clothes. The directors of the
film have made you judge the man on his
appearance by him modifying his appearance by
putting tattoos on his body and have shocked you
when you have found out when he actually is the
good guy in the film.
In this shot it completely changes your
opinion on the man. His appearance has
gone against the conventions that he was
portraying. The director twisted the story
and showed you how much you judged
the man on his appearance.
Also the editing of the brightness has
changed from the scenes before. By doing
this is has changed the
5. Framing
Throughout the morjority of the film, the back crow we can see tends to be in
the centre of the fame, when it is not, it is being looked at by the suspicious
man. The crow seems to signify something bad is happening. Its crawing and
focus within frames shows its importance. Here we can see the man looking at
the crow, but the man himself is not in focus. The surrounding features with the
frame are the sign where the crow is perched and the field surrounding them, it
makes the scene fell eerier, because apart from the crow and sigh everything
else is not in focus.

Script and audience
The typical audience of the film this would be lovers of horror and thriller,
although we realise at the that in fact horror is not the actual genre of the
film. There is not a narrative for this film. I do not think the crow counts, I
think the brilliance of this film is that it has not got any dialogue, the diegetic
sounds tell the story for us and build up a high suspense.
7. Camerawork and Narrative
Because this is a silent film, the camera tells the story for us. Here we see a shot
of the camera looking up at the man, this gives the audience an impression of
he looks nervous, scared even, maybe as if he done something he regrets. It
shows that in the story, he is the superior person, beause he is above the
person below. We do not know of he is responisble for the situation but he
certainly acts like it and whoever or whatever he is looking down at must be on
the ground for some reason.
8. Sound
The sound we hear of the single cawing crow racen adds eeriness to the
scenes. It is the soudest sound throughout the film and we can see that the
bird makes the man in the film very nervous. Alsmost as if the birds lous
echoing sound will give away what the man is doing to anyone who is
within a close enough distance to hear the animal. It adds to the element
of horror as it is very often a sound used in dark films, a screeching crow
signifying something bad is going to happen.
9. Genre Specific Elements; Conventions.
This film totally goes against the conventions of a typical horror
towards the ending. But during it has all the elements we would
expect to find. The raven, representing a dark mysterious matter
going on within the silence of the film. The bloody cloth laying in the
field, these are all the typical things associated with a horror type
genre.
10. Titles
The title of this film is shown in a pretty basic way but with beautiful
cinematography, match what the word of the title is, ‘field’. We can
see a use of pathetic fallacy during the title of the film, which leads
us to believe there is something more sinister about his film rather
than romance like the work ‘love’ implies in the title.
