Social Networking as a
Business Tool

My name is Ed Mayuga, and I am a
partner at AMM Communications
A company that I co-founded with my
lovely wife, Ann Marie, in 2008…
People (such as our families and
friends) thought we were crazy to
start a marketing company at this time,
But we knew that consumers still
bought products and services, no
matter how bad the economy…
So, there was a market for our special brand of public relations, marketing, and social media consulting
services.
Thankfully, we have been able to grow our business at 20% year-over-year, and become certified as a
Women Business Enterprise (WBE) in the State of Missouri, over the course of the last 6 years!

In the past 6 years, I have presented multiple webinars and taught classes on Social Media
Marketing, so I can anticipate the questions that most small business owners have about
marketing…
Today, we will cover “20 Questions, 20 Answers” that
relate as how your company, and you personally, can use
social networking as a business tool!
Since this is a quick webinar, we
won’t go deeply into the tactics, but
this overview should help you in
the initial stages of formulating your
Social Media Marketing strategy.
My goal is for you to take away at least 3 ideas that can help you
implement the tactical side of social media marketing!
Selling and business development are the end goals
of marketing, so marketing is a key precursor to
effective selling.
Social Media is an important business tool because it allows a business to market 24/7
It also provides a way to create a need in the mind of your current or
prospective clients, and creating a need is fundamental to selling!
Let’s face it, as small business owners, we aren’t
going to put our time and resources into
anything that does not lead to additional
revenue, especially if it is a long way off!
In addition to Social Media, Public Relations and Content Marketing are the keys to
gaining a clients’ permission to market to them!
Question #1:Why is Social Media Marketing important to you?
For your company: A way to market your products and
services 24/7 and provide customer service.
For you: You can open up new business
opportunities and find prospective clients
through network building.
Question #2:What Is the Consequence of NOT Engaging in Social Media Marketing?
For your company: Your competitors are probably
considering how to engage your current and
potential customer, and you lose your advantage!
For you:You risk missing out on marketing your
brand to the next generation of consumers,
especially those who use social networks daily!
Question #3: My Clients Don’t Use Social
Networks, so Why Should I?
For your company: The mobile web, via a smartphone or tablet, is the
most common way for prospective clients to research a company.
For you: Perhaps your clients are already engaging in social networks, but they
don’t see a value in connecting with you? Give them a reason to connect by
sharing information that will help them or elicit an emotional response.
Question #3: It’s All So Confusing! Where do I Start?
For your company: In addition to your company website, you should also set up a
LinkedIn company page, containing contact information and the products or services you
provide.
For you:There are 277 million users worldwide, so chances are
people that you know from childhood, classmates, old friend etc.
may have a profile.What a great way to reconnect and potential
uncover a job or business opportunity!
Start small and master one social network, such as LinkedIn!
Question #4:What are additional benefits to using LinkedIn?
For your company: You can create a LinkedIn
group specializing on your business sector, that
you control and you manage the message.
For you:You can add your LinkedIn profile to
your business card or email signature.
Question #5:Why LinkedIn first and not
another social network?
For your company: LinkedIn is the default social
networking business network. Users are
professionals looking for other professionals and
companies with whom to interact.
For you: LinkedIn is more than just your resume.
It functions as an email account, a research tool,
and a lead generation tool!
Question #6: How will LinkedIn, and other social networks help my business?
For both you and your company –Think of a
“Hub and Spokes” where the Hub is your website
and the Spokes are your social networks
You can create your own personal
website using http://Flavors.me
The Spokes bring users to your website
and are a mechanism to share news from
your Hub!
Your company website is the “Hub” of all
your activity, where you can direct
potential customers to know, like, and trust
your brand.
Question #7:Where Does Facebook Fit In?
For your company – Facebook is a “social” network, so it is most beneficial to Business to
Consumer (B2C) companies.
For you –You may find a business connection on Facebook that you can engage
with on LinkedIn, but it is primarily social in nature.
Question #8: OK, I Understand LinkedIn and Facebook
Now, So Where Does Twitter Fit In?
For your company –Twitter is a great network for
promoting a company brand, through the sharing of links.
For you – Since it is only 140 characters, it is much
easier to post than to write a full blog post. It’s
microblogging that can be searched and followed!
Question #9: Now I Have to Monitor 3 Networks
(LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter). How Can I Do
That if I’m Pressed forTime?
For your company –Your company
Facebook page can be integrated into
Hootsuite. Set up accounts with a generic
email address and common password, so
that multiple employees can manage the
feed.
For you –You can create multiple streams and
integrate your LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter
accounts.This is your dashboard and you can open
it automatically when you open your browser.
The Solution – Use a Social
Media Aggregator, like Hootsuite

Question #10: I Understand Sharing Links,
But Do I Have to Share Them Individually?
For your company –You could create
batches of 4-12 items (pictures, documents,
etc.) that you can share on Hootsuite with 1
URL.
For you – Let your imagination run free.
Create Top 10 lists, hobby batches, etc.
No, you don’t! The Solution – Use SlideBatch
(http://slidebatch.com) to batch, share, and
show not only links, but files as well!
Question #11: How Do I Protect My
Brand on Social Networks?
For your company –Think of your company social media
policy. It is easier to demonstrate for an employee what
good looks like, rather than policing and regulating online
behavior.
For you – Set up Google
Alerts for your name.
Question #12:Where Do I Find Content To Share?
For your company – 80/20
rule – 80% educational links
that can help your
followers, then 20%
promotional about your
product or service.
For you – Read online
frequently. Bookmark
and share links from
online news sources
such as CNN,
USAToday, etc.

This is the role of Public Relations – “Creating a Buzz” about your company or brand. It
can be as simple as a new hire announcement, which will demonstrate that your company
is growing!
When AMM Communications writes press and social
media releases, we use keywords and naturally-flowing
language so that Google robots can crawl the release.We
attempt to answer the question:“Why should you buy
from me?”
Question #14: In Addition to My Hub,
Where Should I Post My Press Releases?
For you – Read online frequently. Bookmark and share links
from online news sources such as CNN, USAToday, etc.
For your company – Good online press release sites
are http://pitchengine.com and http://prlog.com
Question #15:What If I Only Have a Limited Budget for PR?
For your company – Repurpose old press
releases and marketing content.Anything
that is 6 months old and still relevant is fair
game.
For you – Search through your bookmarks
for relevant content, then share it with a
short commentary.
The beauty of using Social Networks for Content
Marketing is that, if you have the time and the capacity,
create your own releases and share them on social
media. It does require basic writing skills couple with
a dose of creativity!
Question #16: I LikeWatchingVideos,Where DoesYouTube Fit In?
For you –You can create quick videos on your smartphone, but be careful what
you post! A good post is a 30-second testimonial from a happy customer.
YouTube is the second most popular search engine on
the Web. Most people would rather watch than read.
For your company –You can create a
YouTube commercial using

Question #17: How Do I Prevent My Networks from Stagnating?
For your company – Delegate Social Media
updates to multiple people.
For you – Automate posts on Hootsuite.
Create multiple postings during down times.
REMEMBER: Frequency and Consistency are the keys to Social Media Marketing success!

Determine what your goals
are for Social Media
Marketing. Is it to increase
your customer base?
Increase your revenues by a
certain amount? Write down
your strategy.

hold yourself and your staff accountable for executing the strategy?

TACTICS, but in order to be effective you
need a STRATEGY

your landing page. Measure the baseline before
your implement your social networking
marketing strategy, then a 30/60/90 days
afterwards
For you – See how many times you are
mentioned or retweeted on Hootsuite.

People (such as our families and friends) thought we were crazy to start a marketing company at this time, But we knew that consumers still bought products and services, no matter how bad the economy… So, there was a market for our special brand of public relations, marketing, and social media consulting services. Thankfully, we have been able to grow our business at 20% year-over-year, and become certified as a Women Business Enterprise (WBE) in the State of Missouri, over the course of the last 6 years!

  • 8. In the past 6 years, I have presented multiple webinars and taught classes on Social Media Marketing, so I can anticipate the questions that most small business owners have about marketing…
  • 9. Today, we will cover “20 Questions, 20 Answers” that relate as how your company, and you personally, can use social networking as a business tool!
  • 10. Since this is a quick webinar, we won’t go deeply into the tactics, but this overview should help you in the initial stages of formulating your Social Media Marketing strategy.
  • 11. My goal is for you to take away at least 3 ideas that can help you implement the tactical side of social media marketing!
  • 12. Selling and business development are the end goals of marketing, so marketing is a key precursor to effective selling.
  • 13. Social Media is an important business tool because it allows a business to market 24/7
  • 14. It also provides a way to create a need in the mind of your current or prospective clients, and creating a need is fundamental to selling!
  • 15. Let’s face it, as small business owners, we aren’t going to put our time and resources into anything that does not lead to additional revenue, especially if it is a long way off!
  • 16. In addition to Social Media, Public Relations and Content Marketing are the keys to gaining a clients’ permission to market to them!
  • 17. Question #1:Why is Social Media Marketing important to you? For your company: A way to market your products and services 24/7 and provide customer service. For you: You can open up new business opportunities and find prospective clients through network building.
  • 18. Question #2:What Is the Consequence of NOT Engaging in Social Media Marketing? For your company: Your competitors are probably considering how to engage your current and potential customer, and you lose your advantage! For you:You risk missing out on marketing your brand to the next generation of consumers, especially those who use social networks daily!
  • 19. Question #3: My Clients Don’t Use Social Networks, so Why Should I? For your company: The mobile web, via a smartphone or tablet, is the most common way for prospective clients to research a company. For you: Perhaps your clients are already engaging in social networks, but they don’t see a value in connecting with you? Give them a reason to connect by sharing information that will help them or elicit an emotional response.

For your company: In addition to your company website, you should also set up a LinkedIn company page, containing contact information and the products or services you provide. For you:There are 277 million users worldwide, so chances are people that you know from childhood, classmates, old friend etc. may have a profile.What a great way to reconnect and potential uncover a job or business opportunity! Start small and master one social network, such as LinkedIn!
  • 21. Question #4:What are additional benefits to using LinkedIn? For your company: You can create a LinkedIn group specializing on your business sector, that you control and you manage the message. For you:You can add your LinkedIn profile to your business card or email signature.

Users are professionals looking for other professionals and companies with whom to interact. For you: LinkedIn is more than just your resume. It functions as an email account, a research tool, and a lead generation tool!
  • 23. Question #6: How will LinkedIn, and other social networks help my business? For both you and your company –Think of a “Hub and Spokes” where the Hub is your website and the Spokes are your social networks You can create your own personal website using http://Flavors.me The Spokes bring users to your website and are a mechanism to share news from your Hub! Your company website is the “Hub” of all your activity, where you can direct potential customers to know, like, and trust your brand.
  • 24. Question #7:Where Does Facebook Fit In? For your company – Facebook is a “social” network, so it is most beneficial to Business to Consumer (B2C) companies. For you –You may find a business connection on Facebook that you can engage with on LinkedIn, but it is primarily social in nature.

For your company –Twitter is a great network for promoting a company brand, through the sharing of links. For you – Since it is only 140 characters, it is much easier to post than to write a full blog post. It’s microblogging that can be searched and followed!
  • 26. Question #9: Now I Have to Monitor 3 Networks (LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter). How Can I Do That if I’m Pressed forTime? For your company –Your company Facebook page can be integrated into Hootsuite. Set up accounts with a generic email address and common password, so that multiple employees can manage the feed. For you –You can create multiple streams and integrate your LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter accounts.This is your dashboard and you can open it automatically when you open your browser. The Solution – Use a Social Media Aggregator, like Hootsuite http://hootsuite.com
  • 27. Question #10: I Understand Sharing Links, But Do I Have to Share Them Individually? For your company –You could create batches of 4-12 items (pictures, documents, etc.) that you can share on Hootsuite with 1 URL. For you – Let your imagination run free. Create Top 10 lists, hobby batches, etc. No, you don’t! The Solution – Use SlideBatch (http://slidebatch.com) to batch, share, and show not only links, but files as well!
  • 28. Question #11: How Do I Protect My Brand on Social Networks? For your company –Think of your company social media policy. It is easier to demonstrate for an employee what good looks like, rather than policing and regulating online behavior. For you – Set up Google Alerts for your name.
  • 29. Question #12:Where Do I Find Content To Share? For your company – 80/20 rule – 80% educational links that can help your followers, then 20% promotional about your product or service. For you – Read online frequently. Bookmark and share links from online news sources such as CNN, USAToday, etc.

It can be as simple as a new hire announcement, which will demonstrate that your company is growing! It does require basic writing skills couple with a dose of creativity!
