The document discusses the gospel and atonement as revealed through the Old Testament sanctuary services. It notes that the sanctuary services pointed to Christ and the plan of salvation. The gospel is presented as having three steps: (1) Christ's death on the cross provided atonement for sin, reconciling humanity to God; (2) believers experience daily sanctification and victory over sin; (3) complete salvation will come at Christ's second coming when believers are glorified and sin is removed entirely. The sanctuary services model these three steps of atonement and salvation.
2. This Gospel
ISV - Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom
will be proclaimed throughout the world as a testimony
to all nations, * and then the end will come.” Matt 4:23;
9:35; Rom 10:18; Col 1:6, 23
KJV - Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom
shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all
nations; and then shall the end come.
What is THIS GOSPEL?
3. Separation
Then the eyes of both of them
were opened, and they knew
that they were naked; and they
sewed fig leaves together and
made themselves coverings.
And they heard the sound of
the Lord God walking in the
garden in the cool of the day,
and Adam and his wife hid
themselves from the presence
of the Lord God among the
trees of the garden. Gen 3:8,9
4. The Gospel in the New and Old Testament
At no time in the world ’s history has anyone ever earned
salvation by his own works. In both Old and New Testaments,
people were saved by the grace of God and the merits of Jesus.
The following texts make it clear that people who lived before
the cross were saved on the same terms as were people in New
Testament times.
"I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of
God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first,
and also to the Greek." Romans 1:16.
"For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them."
Hebrews 4:2.
"For by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified."
Galatians 2:16.
"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other
name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be
saved." Acts 4:12.
"But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other
gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let
him be accursed." Galatians 1:8.
5. The Old Testament itself teaches salvation through Christ. The "scriptures"
spoken of in the following texts are the Old Testament. These texts make it
clear that the Old Testament scriptures teach the same gospel of salvation
through Christ that we find in the New Testament.
"Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures." 1 Corinthians 15:3.
"From a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make
thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." 2 Timothy
3:15.
"Then he said unto them, `O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the
prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to
enter into his glory?’ And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he
expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself."
Luke 24:25-27.
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." 2 Timothy 3:16.
6. The Bible presents one gospel from Genesis to Revelation, one plan of
salvation for humanity.
The Bible calls it "the everlasting gospel"
(Revelation 14:6), the "everlasting
gospel"
Rev 14:6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the
everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to
every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, ...
(Psalm 105:10; Hebrews 13:20)
Psalm 105:10 And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel
for an everlasting covenant:
Hebrews 13:20 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead
our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the
everlasting covenant, ...
7. Separation
Behold, the Lord's hand is not
shortened, That it cannot save;
Nor His ear heavy, That it
cannot hear. But your iniquities
have separated you from your
God; And your sins have
hidden His face from you, So
that He will not hear.
Isa 59:1,2
8. The Gospel
And I will put enmity
Between you and the
woman, And between
your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your
head, And you shall
bruise His heel."
Gen 3:15
As far as the east is from the west, so far hath
he removed our transgressions from us.
Psalm 103:12
9. Every sacrifice offered, every ordinance
performed, was to be an expression of
faith in Christ.
"By faith Abel offered unto God a more
excellent sacrifice." Hebrews 11:4.
"Through faith he [Moses] kept the passover,
and the sprinkling of blood." Hebrews 11:28.
10. The Gospel
1. Taking away of sins…and
2. Restoring our relationship with God
11. The One Gospel
For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well
as to them; [Israel] but the word which they heard
did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in
those who heard it. Heb 4:2
12. What Gospel was preached to Israel?
Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are
going, and how can we know the way?"
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No
one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:5,6
Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary; Psalm 77:13
And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among
them; Exodus 25:8
Heb 8:1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum:
We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the
throne of the Majesty in the heavens; 2 A minister of the sanctuary,
and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.
13.
14. The Significance of the Old Testament Sanctuary
Services
• Every element in the Old Testament ritual system was
specifically designed by Christ to illustrate His own work in
the plan of salvation. Every lamb that was slain prefigured
Christ, the Lamb of God, who would be offered for the sins
of the world. Everything the priests did pointed to Jesus,
our great High Priest in the courts above.
• By contemplating the meaning of the ceremonies he
performed, an Israelite could understand the entire gospel
of salvation. The gospel of Christ is in the Old Testament
illustrated just as clearly as in the New Testament it is
proclaimed.
15. Cont’d
The ceremonial system centered around the sanctuary and its
services. It should not surprise us then that every major scene
in the book of Revelation is oriented with respect to the temple
in heaven where Christ is ministering for us. The heavenly
temple is specifically mentioned 14 times in Revelation (3:12;
7:15; 11:1, 2, 19; 14:15, 17; 15:5, 6, 8; 16:1, 17).
Revelation is full of sanctuary terminology. Twenty-eight times
in Revelation Jesus is called the "Lamb". References to
sanctuary furniture such as the candlesticks, the altar of
incense, and the ark of the testament are found throughout the
book. Other references to the temple in heaven include Psalm
11:4; 18:6; 102:19 Isaiah 6:1; Habakkuk 2:20; Malachi 3:1; and
Hebrews 8 and 9.
16. The tabernacle on earth was patterned after the
temple in heaven. It consisted of two apartments, the
Holy Place and the Most Holy Place.
“And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.
According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle,
and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make
it”. Exodus 25:8-9
17. Made after the Pattern
Further, the tabernacle built by Moses was made after a pattern. The
Lord directed him, "According to all that I show thee, after the pattern of
the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so
shall ye make it." And again the charge was given, "Look that thou make
them after their pattern, which was showed thee in the mount. " Exodus
25:9,40. And Paul says, that the first tabernacle "was a figure for the time
then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices;" that its holy
places were "patterns of things in the heavens;" that the priests who
offered gifts according to the law, served, "unto the example and shadow
of heavenly things," and that "Christ is not entered into the holy places
made with hands, which are the figures of the true, but into Heaven itself,
now to appear in the presence of God for us." Hebrews 9:9, 23; 8:5;
9:24.
18. The Pattern of the sanctuary:
• Remind that the wilderness sanctuary was patterned after
the heavenly sanctuary.
• Emphasize that Jesus Christ is the central figure in the
heavenly sanctuary.
• Highlight that the services and symbols of the earthly
sanctuary pointed to Christ.
The central figure of the sanctuary in heaven is Christ. It is
around His life, death, and resurrection that the hope of
eternal life is based.
Thus, the services and symbols used in the sanctuary on
earth pointed to Christ, to the beauty of His character, and to
His love and justice.

●
Christ is the Lamb of God that took away the sins of the
world (John 1:29)
●
Christ is the light of the world that lightens every man (John
1:9-12; 8:12)
●
Christ is the living bread who came down from heaven to
give us eternal life (John 6:32-51)
●
Christ is the mercy seat (propitiation), through whose
redemption we have salvation full and complete (Romans
3:24, 25)
●
Christ is our intercessor against the accusations of Satan
(Hebrews 7:25)
●
Christ is the veil that bore our sins in His flesh (Hebrews
10:19,20)
22. The Sanctuary Revealed the Fall and Restoration of Man
• In Adam, humanity sinned, was defiled, and condemned
to death. In Christ, the same humanity was reconciled to
God, cleansed from all defilement, and justified to life
(Romans 5:18)
• Through faith in Christ, sinners experience salvation
23. This is the good news of the gospel and the truth of
righteousness by faith. All this was revealed in the
Sanctuary model given to Moses:
24. ●
The Sanctuary was where God met sinners (Ex. 25:22; 29:42, 43)
●
Today He meets us in Christ (2 Cor. 5:19)
●
The Sanctuary was where God revealed Himself to sinners (Ex. 29:46)
●
Today He reveals Himself to us in Christ (John 14:7-9)
●
The Sanctuary was where God dwelt with sinners (Ex. 25:8; 29:45, 46)
●
Today He dwells with us in Christ (Matthew 1:23; John 14:23)
●
The Sanctuary was where God spoke to sinners (Ex. 29:42; Lev. 1:1)
●
Today He speaks to us in Christ (Hebrews 1:2; John 8:43, 47)
●
The Sanctuary was where God accepted sinners (Lev. 1:4)
●
Today He accepts us in Christ (Ephesians 1:6)
●
The Sanctuary was where God forgave sinners (Lev. 4:20, 26, 31, 35)
●
Today He forgives us in Christ (Ephesians 1:7)
25. Three Steps in the Atonement
By studying the plan of salvation as illustrated in the Old
Testament sanctuary services, we may learn much about the
great work of atonement.
The word "atonement," or at-one-ment, refers to the process
whereby man is reconciled to God.
ATONEMENT is a word that we do not normally use today.
Instead we prefer to use the words RECONCILE or
RECONCILIATION, which basically mean the same thing
[look for example at Rom. 5:11 in the KJV and the
NIV, which, incidentally, is the same as the NKJV]
26. The word atonement means removing any barrier that has
caused the separation of two people, thus bring them together
once again. Hence, when this happens, they have been
reconciled. When used theologically, the word atonement refers
to the expiating or removing of our sins which has separated us
sinners from a holy God [read Isa. 59:1, 2, 3].
1 Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot
save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your
God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will
not hear. *
3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers
with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath
muttered perverseness.
27. On the cross the sins of the entire human race was atoned for by the
death of Jesus Christ. As a result sinful humanity was reconciled to
God. This atonement or reconciliation was perfect, full, and complete.
This is part and parcel of the good news of the gospel and the
New Testament clearly teaches this [read Rom. 5:10; 2 Cor. 5:18, 19;
Col. 1:19, 20].
Does the fact that sinful humanity has already been reconciled to
God mean that there is no final atonement?
There is going to be a final atonement. But how can there be a final
atonement, to be accomplished sometime in the future, if the
atonement on the cross was full and complete?
Salvation in the Bible is presented as both an objective
truth as well as a subjective experience, the problem is
solved
28. As an objective truth, all Christians can claim I am already
saved in Christ [Eph. 2:6]. This is what gives us assurance
of salvation.
But as a subjective experience, we Christians must also
add I am being saved daily from the power and slavery
to sin (i.e., I am being sanctified), as well as I will be
saved at the second advent of Christ from the nature
and presence of sin (i.e., I will be glorified).
The same truth or idea must be applied to the doctrine of
atonement. As an objective truth the entire human race
has already been reconciled to God. But as a subjective
experience the atonement has more than one phase, of
which the final atonement is the culminating one.
29. Atonement Experienced
The Bible show at least three
phases of the subjective experience
of the atonement or reconciliation:
30. 1. The reconciliation between mankind and God. Please note: I
did not say between God and mankind. That has already
taken place on the cross. In other words, reconciliation or at-
one-ment is a two-way affair. As far as God is concerned, He
has already reconciled Himself to mankind by the death of His
Son. What is left is for us humans to be reconciled to Him [2
Cor. 5:18-20.]
2 Corinthians 5:
18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to
himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry
of reconciliation;
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world
unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and
hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God
did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye
reconciled to God.
31. 2. The Bible also speaks of atonement as an on going
application through the high priestly ministry of Christ in the
heavenly sanctuary. While Christ is the Saviour of all
mankind, He is the priest or mediator of only the believers
who have by faith been reconciled to God. We believers are
still sinners, in and of ourselves, and Satan uses this to
accuse us before God day and night [Rev. 12:10]. However,
while Satan does this, Christ is daily or continually applying
His blood to defend our atonement or reconciliation [Heb.
2:17].
Hebrews 2:
17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made
like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and
faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make
reconciliation for the sins of the people.
32. 3. Lastly, the Bible speaks of a final atonement when sin will be
eradicated and the whole universe will be at-one-ment with God. Even
though we Christians stand perfect in Christ and have the full
assurance of salvation we still have sinful flesh. Therefore, there is no
at-one-ment or peace between the flesh and our converted minds
Romans 7: 24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me
from the body of this death? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ
our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God;
but with the flesh the law of sin.
Hence, we long for the redemption of our bodies [read Rom. 8:22-25;
Phil. 3:20, 21].
Phil 3: 20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also
we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: 21 Who shall
change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his
glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even
to subdue all things unto himself.
This is part of the final atonement.
33. Furthermore, until Christ comes we are living in a world which is, to a
large degree, still under the control of Satan, the enemy of souls. As a
result, we Christians may describe ourselves as citizens of heaven but
living in enemy territory. That means Satan can make and does make
life hell for us. So we look forward to the second and third coming of
Christ so that we may live in heaven and the new earth at-one-ment
[Rev. 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first
heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no
more sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming
down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for
her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying,
Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with
them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with
them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from
their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor
crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things
are passed away.
5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things
new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and
faithful.]
34. This is what the doctrine of final atonement is all about. It is not
adding to the finished atonement of the cross, but making real in
experience what Christ has already obtained for mankind by His
birth, life, death, and resurrection. The final atonement is the
climax, the Halleluia Chorus of the plan of redemption. It is a
glorious doctrine that we must not be ashamed of, because it
points us forward to the reality of salvation, which at the moment
is ours only by faith
[Heb. 11:11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for,
the evidence of things not seen.]
35. When the doctrine of the final atonement is understood in the
context of legalism, it becomes a terrible doctrine which robs us
of the joy of salvation. But correctly understood, the doctrine of
the final atonement is of tremendous help to believers to hold on
to our confidence in Christ
[Rev. 22:20, 2120 He which testifieth these things saith,
Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
Amen.]
36. A study of the sanctuary reveals
three steps in the process:
sacrifice, intercession, and
cleansing.
37.
38.
39. Sacrifice
• This step was symbolized
in the Old Testament by
the daily slaying of
animals. A perfect lamb
without blemish was
required, and sacrificed in
the courtyard. Every drop
of blood that was shed in
those rituals pointed to the
sacrifice of Jesus for lost
mankind. His death paid
the full price for our
redemption.
40.
41. 1. Lamb, 2. Without blemish, 3. killed at twilight, 4. the Lord's
Passover, 5. Don't break any bones

of Christ, as of a lamb
without blemish and without
spot: 1 Peter 1:18
42.
43. After the penitent sinner has confessed his sins upon the
head of the sacrificial animal and taken it's life (Lev.
4:4,15,24,29) the priest performs one of two kinds of rituals
• 1. In the case of the sin offering for a fellow priest, or for the
whole congregation, the officiating pries sprinkled some of the
blood seven times before the veil in the holy place as well as
on the horns of the altar of incense. (Lev. 4:6,7, 17,18,
4:2733)
• 2. In the case of the sin offering for other individuals, the
officiating priest sprinkled the blood on the horns of the altar
of burnt offering in the court. Pours out the blood at the base
of the altar and then he eats some of the flesh of the sin
offering. (Lev. 6:26; 10:17) By eating the flesh, the priest
became the sin-bearer. "to bear the guilt..to make an
atonement for them."
44. Romans 4.7-8
"Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and
whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord
will not impute sin."
45. Intercession
• This step was symbolized by
the daily duties performed by
the priests in the holy place,
or first apartment of the
sanctuary. Incense was
continually offered before
God, mingled with the
prayers of the saints. This
represented Christ’s priestly
intercession for His people
which He began after His
ascension to heaven.
Through Christ’s first
apartment ministry the
sinner’s guilt is pardoned,
and Christ’s righteousness is
imparted to His people.
46.
47. Cleansing
• The third step was illustrated once
each year in the Old Testament
ceremonies. The tenth day of the
seventh month was called the Day
of Atonement. It was the day on
which the sanctuary was cleansed.
It was considered the most solemn
and significant event of the year. On
that day the whole congregation
appeared before the Lord that they
might be made "at one" with Him.
Sins which had been brought to the
sanctuary throughout the year were
figuratively removed from it on that
day. But those who failed to humble
themselves before God were cut off
from the people.
48. Cont ’d
• On that day the high priest alone appeared
before God behind the veil of the Most Holy
Place. With him he took the blood of a goat and
a censer of coals from the altar of incense. This
represented the final phase of Christ ’s work in
the heavenly sanctuary, performed in "the time of
the end." The work of atonement is not complete
until the sanctuary is thus cleansed.
• Scripture references to the Old Testament Day of
Atonement include Leviticus 16 and Leviticus
23:27-32. Information on the end-time cleansing of the
sanctuary is found in Daniel 8:14; Malachi 3:1-5; and
Hebrews 8 and 9.
49. Sacrifice is made, the cleansing blood is applied at the
mercy seat as well as at the altar of incense. The sanctuary
is cleansed. The priest returns from the cleansing of the
sanctuary "when he has made an end of atoning for the
tabernacle of meeting and the altar" (Lev. 16:20) Then he
goes and places ALL the sins upon the goat who is cast far
out, forever banned (this goat is not the sacrifice )
51. The Brazen Altar of Burnt Offerings
• Exodus 27:1-8, 38:1-7.
• After confessing his sins over the animal and slaying it, the sinner let
the priest as mediator take the lamb (or whatever animal was offered)
and place selected portions of it (such as the fat, Lev. 4, 9) on
the Brazen (Brass) Altar of Burnt Offerings, to be consumed by the
flames. For those too poor to offer an animal, an offering of flour was
permitted (Lev 5:11), which was also burned on the Altar. The Altar
was constructed of Acacia wood, covered with brass. The Acacia
wood symbolized the works of humanity, that but for the brass
covering would be consumed by the fire.
52.
53. • The brass was a symbol of suffering, so this Altar represented
the suffering and death of Jesus Christ that covers and
protects the repentant sinner from the divine fire of Judgment.
The Altar had at each of its corners, a horn, representing the
power, strength, honor, and victory of God.
• Before being sacrificed, the animal was secured to the horns
of the Altar (Psalm 118:27). Blood from the sacrificed animal
was placed on the horns of the Altar by the priest, and the
rest was poured out at the bottom of the Altar (Exodus 29:12,
Lev 4:7). The fire for the Brazen Altar of Burnt
Offerings was a special divinely lit fire, that was
started by fire coming down out of heaven (Lev
9:24). This symbolically represents the fire that will
ultimately consume all sinners, known as the lake of
fire in Revelation.
54. The Laver
• Exodus 30:18-21, 38:8
• Located between the Brazen Altar of Burnt Offerings and the
Sanctuary, the Laver was a basin filled with water used for ritual
cleansing. The Laver was made from the brass "looking glasses"
(mirrors) of the women. Before handling the animal sacrifices brought
by the people, the priest would have to cleanse his hands and feet
with water from the Laver. This was symbolic of the act of
baptism. Baptism is a declaration of the repentant sinner
that he has been buried with Jesus Christ and resurrected
with him as a new creature (Rom 6:4-13). The polished brass
of the Laver is to be a "looking glass" revealing our sins, and showing
us our need for a Savior, that we might be baptized and receive the
righteousness that God offers us through His Son Jesus Christ. If the
priest were to neglect this act of cleansing, he would be
struck dead as a result (Exodus 30:21). Why? Because to
reject the cleansing righteousness of Jesus Christ is to die
in one's own sin.
55.
56. Justification or Forgiveness or
Pardon
The Brazen Altar of Burnt Offering and the Laver were both
outside of the Sanctuary proper, to the immediate east of the
entrance. It was also in this area that the animals were slain
for the services. These activities carried on outside the
Sanctuary represented the process of justification
or forgiveness or pardon and reconciliation of the
sinner through the death of Jesus Christ on the
cross, and the acceptance of that vicarious
sacrifice of the Lamb of God by the repentant
sinner.
57. The Golden Candlestick (Menorah)
• Exodus 25:31-39, 37:17-24.
• Inside the Sanctuary itself, in what is known as the first
apartment, or Holy Place, were three pieces of furniture. To the
south side of the room was a large golden candelabra, or Menorah,
that had six branches off of a central candlestick. The Menorah
used pure olive oil as fuel. It was the job of the priests to daily trim
the wicks (which were made of old priestly garments) and refill the
bowls of oil, so that the Menorah would constantly be a source of
light for first apartment or Holy Place. The Menorah
represented Jesus Christ, who is the light of the world,
and the olive oil was symbolic of the Holy Spirit and the
wicks were symbolic of the righteousness of Christ. The
Menorah also represents the seven churches of Revelation, who
are to share the light of the gospel message with the rest of the
world. It can be found in Revelation 1:12 and 4:5.
58.
59. The Table of Showbread
• Exodus 25:23-30, 37:10-16.
• On the north side of the Holy Place was a small table
known as the table of Showbread. It was constructed
of Acacia wood and covered with gold. On it were
kept 12 loaves of unleavened bread (Leviticus
24:5-9). These loaves were symbolic of Jesus, who is
the bread of life (John 6:35), but they also represent the
12 tribes of Israel. Also kept on the Table of
Showbread, were offerings of wine (Number
28:7), so both the bread and the wine of the
Lord's supper were represented here. The Table of
Showbread is alluded to in Revelation as a throne before
the Candlestick, in chapter 4 verses 2-5.

61. The Golden Altar of Incense
• Exodus 30:1-10, 37:25-29.
• On the west side of the Holy Place, immediately before the
veil separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place,
was a small Golden Altar of Incense. In it was a brass pot,
containing hot coals from the Brazen Altar of Burnt
Offerings, and it was here that a very special blend of
incense was burned by the priest, which filled the
Sanctuary with a sweet smelling cloud, representing the
prayers of the believers. Sacrificial blood was sometimes
put on the horns of the Golden Altar of Incense (Lev. 4:7,
18). The Golden Altar of Incense also figures prominently
in the book of Revelation (Rev 8:3-5) with regard to the
end of judgment, or close of probation on humanity.
62.
63. Sanctification
• The activities in the first apartment, or Holy place, represented the
daily process of sanctification of the repentant sinner in preparation
for the final judgment which occurred on the Day of Atonement,
observed today as Yom Kippur.
• A true and complete sanctified life will involve Bible study,
Prayer and Witnessing
64.
65. The Veil of the Sanctuary
• Exodus 26:31-33, 36:35, 2 Chronicles 3:14
• This veil or curtain between the two apartments
of the Sanctuary, the Holy and the Most Holy,
has great significance. This is because it was this
veil that tore at the very moment Jesus died on
the Cross, symbolic of the end of the need for the
human Levitical priesthood as mediator between
man and God-
• Mat 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple
was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and
the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
• Mark 15:38 And the veil of the temple was rent
in twain from the top to the bottom.
66.
67. • Luke 23:45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of
the temple was rent in the midst.
• The veil represents the torn body of Jesus
(Hebrews 10:20). It is only by passing through this veil
that access is possible to the Most Holy place of
judgment. The tearing of the veil is symbolic of the death
of the Lamb of God, which now permits the believer in
His atonement immediate access to the Most Holy place,
of God, the place of judgment, through the new High
Priest Jesus Christ, the one and only mediator between
man and God.
• 1 Tim 2:5 For there is one God, and one
mediator between God and men, the man Christ
Jesus;
• The faithful have full and complete access to
God, without the need of an earthly mortal
priest to represent them.
68.
69.
70. The Ark of the Testimony of God
• Exodus 25:10-22, 37:1-9.
• This was a box constructed of Acacia wood covered
with Gold. Inside it was kept the two tables of stone upon
which the Law of God (The 10 Commandments) was
written. Later it also contained Aaron's rod that budded,
and a pot of manna. The lid of the Ark was called the
Mercy Seat (Exodus 25:17), and above it was where the
glory of the Lord was present, between two covering
cherubs, or angels, on either end of the Ark. The Mercy
seat, or lid, represented Jesus Christ, the mediator for
humanity between the Law of God, that requires the death
of the sinner, and a merciful God. The High Priest was the
only person allowed to enter the Most Holy place where the
Ark was kept, and that was only on one day of the year, the
Day of Atonement (known today as Yom Kippur).
71.
72. • The Ark of the Testimony from Solomon's Temple
was secreted away before the Babylonian
capture of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar and
was never present in Herod's Temple. The
armies of Titus found the Holy of Holies quite
empty in 70 A.D. The Ark remains unlocated
today, although there are numerous speculations
about its whereabouts.
• In Revelation (which was written about 95 A.D.),
the Ark is seen in Chapter 11, verse 19. It is
interesting to note that John is seeing the Ark of
God in the heavenly Sanctuary, not the earthly
Sanctuary (which was utterly destroyed in 70
A.D. by the armies of Rome).
73.
74. Judgment
• The activities on the day of Atonement symbolized
the people of God, seeking representation by their
High Priest Jesus Christ in the judgment, who met
all the demands of the law perfectly and then was
sacrificed for our sins. He paid the price for our
disobedience, though he was perfectly obedient. The
Hebrew Sanctuary illustrates that ultimately all humanity will
be judged by the standards of God's Law. Those with faith will
keep the Law perfectly through Jesus Christ. Those without
faith will not have been able to keep the Law of God, and
must die as a result. After all, the wages of sin is death. Since
the Law of God could not be changed, Jesus died for us, in
our place, to satisfy the Law.
• By faith, we will take on the righteousness of Christ and be
judged as keepers of the Law, with a right to the tree of life
and eternal life.
• Just as all Israel sought representation by the High Priest on
that day, we should be fervently seeking our High Priest,
Jesus Christ, to represent us in Judgment.
82. Description (The Brazen Altar; Exodus 27:1-8)
• When you enter the Tabernacle through the gate, which is on
the east, you come to this altar first, made of acacia wood,
known for its hardness and durability. It is harder than
oak. The boards are overlaid with brass. 7.5’ square and
4.5’ tall, with a horn on each corner to tie the animals to. A
mesh or grate of brass is inside midway down where the
offerings are burnt.
• V. 3 tells us of these utensils, some to get rid of ashes,
others to carry blood into the Holy of Holies. The fleshhooks
allow the priest to move the sacrifice. The firepans were used
to move the coals of fire from place to place when the
Tabernacle was transported...it was a perpetual fire. The first
ever sacrifice there was consumed by fire from God in heaven
which was never to go out. They also used these firepans to
move fire inside to the altar of incense.
• The word ‘altar’ literally means, “A place of slaughter.” In
the OT man had to do this to meet with God. But why not
today? Our altar at the front is a different kind of altar.
83. Hebrews 13:10-12
10
We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat
which serve the tabernacle. 11 For the bodies of those
beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the
high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. 12
Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people
with his own blood, suffered without the gate.
84. Jesus is our sacrifice, once and for all!
In the brazen altar we see the person and work of
Christ:
• The acacia wood is incorruptible.
• The tree it comes from bears hard thorns, like the ones
beaten into our Savior’s brow.
• If you pierce that tree at night by morning it will put off a
resin that is used for medicinal purposes...reminding us
of the spear put into His side and out flowed blood and
water, healing our souls!
• The brass overlay shows it is a place where sin is
judged
85. A convicted sinner
Imagine a man standing outside the white linen fence of the
Tabernacle. He wants to come inside and be with God, but he
realizes he cannot because that white linen stands for God’s
purity. He knows he’s not worthy, for he had stood at the base of
Mt. Sinai and heard the thunder of God’s law, and he had
severely broken it time and again. He stands there as a convicted
sinner, guilty. To try to climb the fence or jump over would mean
instant death...there’s only one way in. It’s the gate that is
Jesus...the gate to the sheepfold (John 10:7, 9). “I am the
door...”
• He looks at that beautiful gate:
• White for purity or colour of righteousness
• Blue (Number 15:37-41) – colour of obedience
• Red – (Leviticus 17: 11) colour of sacrifice (colour for
the blood)
• Purple – colour of royalty
• Red+Blue ----->Purple (sacrifice and obedience make
full loyalty)
•Will he be allowed in? Only if he has the proper sacrifice. And if
he does then it doesn’t matter what he’s done.
86. White, Blue and Red
Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though
your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red
like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Numbers 15:37 ¶And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 38 Speak unto
the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the
borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put
upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: 39 And it shall be unto you
for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments
of the Lord, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your
own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring: 40 That ye may remember,
and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God. 41 I am the Lord
your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am
the Lord your God.
Numbers 17: 11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to
you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood
that maketh an atonement for the soul
87. Purple
• Covered The Altar. Then they shall take away the ashes from the altar,
and spread a purple cloth over it. (Numbers 4: 13)
• Purple has become the symbol of royalty, but it clearly was a symbol
that was related to the priesthood and sacrifice when God used it. This
color was in the priest's garments and the coverings of the sanctuary and
the doorways. Significantly, the altar of sacrifice was covered in purple
when the sanctuary was moved. (Numbers 4: 13). This prophecy was
fulfilled when he was dressed in purple at the trial.
• Covered The Priest-King. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of
thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him; (John 19: 2;
Mark 15: 17)
• The priest is the lawyer for the government and law of God. He
studies this law and teaches it to the people and administers justice.
Therefore, Christ becomes our priest and defender before God. The color
purple is in the doors to the sanctuary because the sanctuary is the place
where we go to get justice from God.
88. • Badger skin – Christ veiled His
divinity with humanity (Christ the
lowly Saviour) (Exodus 26:14)
89. The covering materials of the sanctuary
represents Christ
• Badger skin – Christ veiled His divinity with humanity (Christ the
lowly Saviour) (Exodus 26:14)
• Skins of ram dyed red – Christ the sacrifice (sacrificial Saviour)
(Exodus 36:19)
• Covering of woven goat hair – the righteousness of Christ (Christ
the sinless Saviour) (Exodus 35:23)
• Inner or royal covering (blue, scarlet & purple) – Christ the worthy
King (Christ the exalted Saviour)
• Vail of blue, scarlet and purple (Exodus 26:31 - “And thou shalt make
a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning
work: with cherubims shall it be made:”)
• Gate of the court and Door to the tabernacle (Exodus 27:16; 36:37
“And he made an hanging for the tabernacle door of blue, and purple,
and scarlet, and fine twined linen, of needlework; * “)

Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting
gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth--to every nation, tribe, tongue,
and people--saying with a loud voice, "Fear God and give glory to Him, for the
hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth,
the sea and springs of water.“ Rev 14:6,7

Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary; Ps 77:13
97. The Way to the Most Holy
Then I took the little book out of the angel's hand and ate
it, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth. But when I
had eaten it, my stomach became bitter. And he said to me,
"You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations,
tongues, and kings.“ Rev 10:10,11
Then I was given a reed like a measuring rod.
And the angel stood, saying, "Rise and
measure the temple of God, the altar, and
those who worship there. Rev 11:1
98. Finding the Most Holy Place
All heaven watched with the deepest interest the reception of the
first angel's message. But many who professed to love Jesus, and
who shed tears as they read the story of the cross, derided the
good news of His coming.… Those who rejected the first message
could not be benefited by the second; neither were they benefited
by the midnight cry, which was to prepare them to enter with Jesus
by faith into the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary. And by
rejecting the two former messages, they have so darkened their
understanding that they can see no light in the third angel's
message, which shows the way into the most holy place.
99. Finding the Most Holy Place
I saw that as the Jews crucified Jesus, so the nominal churches
had crucified these messages, and therefore they have no
knowledge of the way into the most holy, and they cannot be
benefited by the intercession of Jesus there. Like the Jews, who
offered their useless sacrifices, they offer up their useless prayers
to the apartment which Jesus has left; and Satan, pleased with the
deception, assumes a religious character, and leads the minds of
these professed Christians to himself, working with his power, his
signs and lying wonders, to fasten them in his snare.
100. False Worship caused by lose of where Jesus is
in the Sanctuary
Some he deceives in one way, and some in another. He has
different delusions prepared to affect different minds. Some look
with horror upon one deception, while they readily receive
another. Satan deceives some with Spiritualism. (Contact with
fallen angels) He also comes as an angel of light and spreads
his influence over the land by means of false reformations. The
churches are elated, and consider that God is working
marvelously for them, when it is the work of another spirit. The
excitement will die away and leave the world and the church in a
worse condition than before. EW 260, 261
101. Satan sends power and light
I turned to look at the company who were still
bowed before the throne; they did not know that
Jesus had left it. Satan appeared to be by the
throne, trying to carry on the work of God. I saw
them look up to the throne, and pray, "Father, give
us Thy Spirit." Satan would then breathe upon them
an unholy influence; in it there was light and much
power, but no sweet love, joy, and peace. Satan's
object was to keep them deceived and to draw back
and deceive God's children. Early Writings 56
102. Do You know the Way to the Father?
Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where
You are going, and how can we know the way?"
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and
the life. No one comes to the Father except
through Me. John 14:5,6
Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary; Ps 77:13
