O Operant conditioning
O Positive VS Negative Reinforcement
O Positive VS Negative Punishment
Operant Conditioning
O Focuses on external causes of behavior
O Modifies behavior through positive and
  negative reinforcement
Positive VS Negative
     Reinforcement
O What is positive reinforcement?
O Favorable outcomes given after desired
     behavior
     O Praise, reward!
O Negative reinforcement?
O Removal of an undesired outcome after desired
     behavior
O **it is considered strengthened after the negative
       is removed**
Positive and Negative
       Punishment
O Positive punishment?
  O Unfavorable events weaken response
O What is negative punishment?
O Favorable events removed after undesired
    behavior
Operant Conditioning in
    the classroom
O Teachers can:
O Use both reinforcement and punishment in the
classroom that can help discipline kids
O Motivate students allowing the use of
    technology in assignments
O Prohibit/assign assignment that students would
learn from mistakes with technology available
What about the students?
O Students can—
  O Understand appropriate behavior
O Know consequences of their actions
O Use technology in a way that allows them to
    feel positive about learning
O Having technology available to continue
motivating them or help them along the way
Thoughts?
O In my opinion, operant conditioning can help
me in a classroom setting in the following
  ways:
O Understand students responses to both positive
  and negative reinforcement
O Help discipline students in the appropriate
  setting and encourage goal setting
O Find more ways to motivate students to be
  successful
