1776                  The Declaration of Independence is signed
                      on July 4th.

1787                  The Constitutional Convention meets in
                      Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and drafts the
                      U.S. Constitution. The Constitution creates
                      the basic structure of the federal government.



1861 - 1865           ● Southern States establish the Confederate
                      States of America (1861)
                      ● Abraham Lincoln is inaugurated as

                      president of the United States (1861)
                      ● Confederate forces bombard Fort Sumter in

                      South Carolina, marking the beginning of the
                      Civil War (1861)
                      ● President Lincoln issues the Emancipation

                      Proclamation, which frees slaves in areas
                      controlled by the Confederacy (1863)
                      ● The Union army wins the Battle of

                      Gettysburg in Pennsylvania (1863)
