Web delivery Moncot tax info scattered/incomplete as with all other taxa Bring together online both scattered tax info and monocot tax communities Biodiv scientists main target – to improve rship between taxonomists & main users Provide for needs of main “customers” more effectively Why monocots? Sizeable element of flg plants 70K s Pp, 20%+ so enabling work at +- ecosystem scale Significant elements of monocot diversity already covered by eTax systems as we have seen Existing communities at family/higher taxa scales
ID to at least fam, gen/sp where poss 3) from professional taxonomists through ecologists and conservation biologists to gardeners and the interested public 4) particularly those working in smaller institutions without access to large collections and libraries 5) of the rest of the plant kingdom and for animal groups
Content team based at Kew Integration a matter for CoIs/PI Also post project sustainability University Envt Outreach based at NHM Esp. Scratchpads project CATE-Sphingidae dataset –extn to zoology Total team is ca 22 people ICT team lead at Oxford but with representation at Kew and NHM Univ envt Outreach based at NHM Scratchpads increasingly important in project CATE-Sphingidae Web metrics
3 (large) family level resources CATE-Araceae from NERC funded CATE project Palmweb from EDIT Grassbase long term core Kew devt – Maria Monocot checklist source of consensus classification Innovation – linking existing resources View to linking eMonocot to other eTax
Early days yet for progress in all project areas, much work so far developing infrastructures & bases for delivery of outputs Ist update/devt is we have web presence Check it out Project activities/documents/news/monocot-related event listings/photos etc Vital communication resource for 3-site project Forums/document stores etc
Content team Family key in advanced development In the family key image, I'm in the player and I've ticked three character states (clearly I chose ones that would eliminate lots of families). Note that Asparagaceae is in there twice at the moment and that is because I'm playing with different options re excluding elements from the family. For now I've gone down the subfamily route. Using dependencies in the features is another possibility. The Dioscoreaceae key image shows how the image of the inflorescence is added and annotated in the builder --> ability to acknowledge copyright, add additional information in the caption and comments.
Ruth has developed LUCID key to 130 + spp of Cypripedioideae with help from PC Will be among the 1 st groups to get sp pages, content largely in hand already
Much other content already identified/stored for main target genera/species For deployment when ICT system is up and running
Communities & content – what constitutes a community? 1? 10? & how to interact with them? SOF – rich content on web already Diosc genera scratchpad in devt
ICT team reports available via website:
Most basic level, eMonocot system needs Portal to supply data to users plus multiple vehicles for taxonomic data input/Community aggregation Scratchpads can already do latter Rather than reinvent wheel, have decided in principle to use scratchpads to capture all new taxonomic content Exploring issues raised with existing taxonomic resources ICT team Revising design in the light of this decision. Accomplished 1 post down, hope to have final piece in Jigsaw next month Still aiming for prototype functional eMonocot system by the autumn
Outreach behind rest of project – needs functional system before we can proceed Lyme Regis fossil festival Monocot Guided walks 1 st steps towards UK monocot ID guide Links beyond biodiv scientists to volunteer scientists & general public through impact plan Looking at refining offer next year and including technological elements for ID/information as part of earth/biodiversity festival
Workshops to galvanise communities and develop content for taxa not part of Kew’s content remit Call for workshops this summer 1 st in chicago, jointly with EoL – Carex one of most imp temperate monocot genera – 2000 spp Esp temp ecology Ca 5, total dependent on funding
