INTRODUCTION

    Why try collaboration?
Different researchers working together on a project can produce more that two times their
           individual efforts.

Team effort of writers will ease a difficult task such as writing a review article or a book.

One or more collaborators can produce a higher-quality product.

The biggest scientific achievements were achieved by collaborations.
Deciphering of the DNA code by Watson and Crick is a famous example. Actually,
it was the team of Watson, Crick, and Franklin, since without the superb X-ray crystallography
and chemical insight of Rosaline Franklin, Watson and Crick would probably have been
beaten by other groups in the race to discover the true structure.

    Prerequisites for collaboration
In any collaboration, all parties must

Agree on the scope of the work

           Understand individual responsibilities

Analyze the time frame to complete various tasks

Compliment each other’s skills and abilities

                                                                        Problems to avoid

                                                                        Essentials for success

THREE WAYS OF COLLABORATION

    Writer/Editor
Here one party writes a section or a chapter and then hands it over to his partner for critique.

On the basis of the partner’s comments, the first author will rewrite the text.

This is a good plan when one party is willing to do the majority of the work but wants some
additional insight from an expert in the field to make sure he has not made mistakes or left out
        any important subjects.

THREE WAYS OF COLLABORATION

    Alternating chapters
A true 50/50 proposition where both parties agree on an outline of the content of a book or a
review article and write alternating chapters or sections.
When both authors finish a chapter, they exchange manuscripts and critique each other as
           above.

This is a common technique for novelists who write as collaborators and can be successful for
nonfiction, too, if both parties are more or less equally versed in the subject.

THREE WAYS OF COLLABORATION

    Individual subjects/specialties
Two authors may divide the work according to their specialties, for example, one writing on
synthetic techniques, the other analyzing the products.

Sometimes, this is a better technique instead of writing alternating chapters.

                                                                        Problems to avoid

                                                                        Essentials to success

PROBLEMS TO AVOID

Reasons for occasional failure of collaboration
Some researchers prefer working on their own

Some people are not team players

           Some dislike sharing credit

Sometimes the other side does not do its share of the work

Anyone who decides to collaborate should avoid these real problems.

                                                                        Three ways of collaboration

                                                                        Problems to avoid

                                                                        Essentials for success

ESSENTIALS FOR SUCCESS

    Clear defined tasks
All collaborators must understand their roles.

Roles should be agreed on before starting work and put in writing for future reference.

Duplication of effort must obviously be avoided.

The most successful collaborations are often those where two individuals with different
           expertise work on complementary efforts.
Neither researcher could carry out the other’s work, but both efforts enhance each others
           credibility.
Another fruitful collaboration would involve one party using a specialized piece of equipment at
           another facility.

ESSENTIALS FOR SUCCESS

    Communication
The ideal collaboration would involve colleagues at the same institution where weekly or daily

conversations on progress can easily be held in a low-key manner.

           In a long-distance international collaboration:

Regularly scheduled progress reports by phone should be arranged.
Exchange of follow-up memos if necessary to clarify changes in future plans.
