The transition from high school into college is undoubtedly a very important time in the lives of
many young people. It is a huge step, and a huge change. There are some who cling to their fading
high–school life, reluctant to let go and move on. Many of my friends would fall under this
category. Some of them seem more prepared for the increasingly near future than others, and they
will have varying degrees of success in beginning their college experience, be it near home or hours
away. But Natalie is different than they are. Rather than getting caught up in the sentimentality of it
all, she is embracing the looming future with open arms.
Natalie Rogers is ready to move on. She is an 18–year–old senior at Coleman High School, and she
feels absolutely prepared to move into the next stage of her life. This puts her in the national
minority. According to a country–wide survey, 45% of high school seniors feel prepared for college
and a career. She's not alone, however, in looking forward to the freedom and independence
generally associated with college life. "I'm really excited that I get to be on my own, make a lot of
my own decisions, and kind of learn how to be independent. Because I haven't gotten a lot of that".
One thing that has become apparent to me is the value that Natalie places on independence.
However, in certain situations, she does consider herself to be dependent on others, sometimes very
much so. I asked her if she considered herself to be an independent

Importance of English Class Essay
Taking an English class during college is important for a fundamental education, because
regardless of the major I chose, I must able to communicate well in written and spoken words.
After all, in the future, when I try to obtain a job, the corporations will most likely base their
decision on my ability to express ideas and opinions in a sophisticated and correct manner.
Therefore, increasing my knowledge and skills in English will increase my opportunities to success.
Yet, currently, many students try to avoid taking English class due to the great amount of practice
and dedication that requires. This, in the long run, decreases their abilities to analyze, express and
critique ideas. Personally, taking an English class has made my...show more content...
As a foreign student, English class gave me the opportunity to improve my overall knowledge about
the language. Another writing mistake was thinking what I was going to write in Spanish and then
try to translate it to English. Nevertheless, this does not work. The grammar and idiom differences
would make my writing sound confusing and clumsy. In the future, this could affect my
performance as a professional. And since a sloppy writing will most likely reflect on a person's
poor vocabulary, I am presently learning to improve my vocabulary by reading frequently since it
helps me to be exposing to new words, sentence structures, and styles techniques, which I could use
in my future assignments. During the semester, I learned to focus on my strengths and work on my
weaknesses. I could use my organization, paragraph structure, and transition skills to keep high
quality writing. This will be helpful to assure an above average grade when I take English 102
during the summer. On the other hand, although students often try to avoid their weaknesses, I see
them as useful. Knowing my weaknesses gives me the opportunity to work on them until they
become strengths. For example, as I mentioned before, organization is presently my biggest strength.
However, at the beginning of the course, it wasn't. I had to practice and work on it until it became

Essay About My English Class
I can remember seeing that I had to take an English class my first semester of college. I was
already overwhelmed with starting college, and having to write college essays made me get even
more nervous. I sat down with my mom and decided to look at the English classes available, and I
finally decided that I had to take an evening class to make it work in my schedule. The first day of
English came and now looking back it was not as bad as I thought. It made me a better writer and be
where I am today. It may have taken me some time to get where I am today, but at least I am on
the right track. English Composition helped me realize that I am my own author and have strengths
that I did not realize I had. When I first started college I did not know what to expect with an
English class. I liked writing about topics that interested me, but high school did not allow me to do
that. I took American History and we would have to write...show more content...
I learned many techniques from my professor. He helped me realize that it is okay to have your
own opinion as long as you back it up. He showed me that I am an author when I did not think I
was. He also told us to read our essays out loud when we proofread, and I always did this
technique before submitting all my essays. I can remember having to write my first essay and I
was scared, because I felt like I had to get a good grade. I started thinking about what tools I could
use to help me, and I decided to go to The Learning Center to help with my essay. When I went
there they would make edits to my essay and then explain what I should change. The tutor noticed I
used multiple choppy sentences and commas in spots there should not be. Sometimes I would even
go twice to make sure I did not miss any minor mistakes. Going there helped me feel more confident
as a writer and I learned from my mistakes. I had many helpful techniques from multiple people that
shaped me into the writer I am

Reflective Essay on College Writing
Reflective Essay on College Writing
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the
semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up
to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually
demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college
has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a
thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the timerestraints are
not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free

I definitely learned a great deal from our discussions about this book. I really did not like it at all
until the class sat down and analyzed the many levels Conrad addressed in his story. I thought the
endless paradoxes in the book, once brought to light, were actually very interesting. My favorite
section, however, was the poetry unit. I really enjoyed the poem ?The Blues? by Billy Collins the
most because of my respect for music. I think Collins really makes a point in his poem about just
how important music is and how it allows people who are very different to connect on many
levels. I also loved ?Love Calls Us to the Things of This World? by Richard Wilbur. The imagery
in this poem was absolutely amazing, and I adored how he made the ordinary things seem mystical
with his words. I loved how the laundry became angels. If only we could look at the world from
that point of view more often, it would be a much happier place.
The criticisms in college have even been somewhat enjoyable and interesting to read. I think I
began to like the stories and poems we read in class more and more as we discussed them and
looked at different authorities? opinions. I found a lot of the information in the databases very
useful. For the Antigone research project, the JSTORS database gave me hundreds of articles
dealing with my topic. I could narrow down what I was looking for and find numerous

Essay on Returning to College as an Adult
Returning to College as an Adult Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and
preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our
college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting
one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After
doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often
misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the
relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors
play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college....show more content...
There are many options available from low–tuition state universities, financial aid, employer tuition
reimbursement. In some cases, you can be eligible for various types of grants. Being a single
mother or just shopping at a certain supermarket can make you eligible. There is a misconception
about the professors (sometimes called instructors). Questions arise such as; will they make time
for me when I need the extra help? How large will the class be? Will they understand that this may
not be as easy for me as it is for others? These questions enter our minds and may seem
discouraging at times. Through my personal experiences I have found that classroom atmospheres
may not always be for everyone. However, that does not mean college life is not for everyone. You
can take many alternative routes. You can take advantage of telecourses, online courses, accelerated
courses and many other options that may be more suitable. My professors have been great. They
come in earlier to help and return e–mails and/or phone calls promptly. You also expect to be able to
accomplish your work quickly and with minimal stress, leaving more time to work and spend
with your family. You expect to be able to do what you did in high school and still pass. However
college, by far, is nowhere as easy as most anticipate. You have to study, unlike high school, where
you could float on by with A's by seldomly attending class. College is harder than high school and

Expectations And Expectations In College
Expectations and Goals As a new freshman, the next four years of my life can seem extremely
daunting, with huge possibilities as to the kind of person that I want to be when I graduate.
College is known as a transformation period in the life of a young adult, and I hope to take full
advantage of this time. By setting expectations and goals for myself, hopefully I can be
successful as I seek out the person that God wants me to be. I have set up, and outlined,
academic, spiritual, and personal goals to achieve my first semester here at college. For this
semester, I have set a high expectation for myself academically. Specifically, I would like to be
able to maintain all A's, and therefore a 4.0 GPA. If I am able to do this, and possibly continue it
on through all eight semesters of my college career, I will be a more competitive applicant for PA
school, or med school, or whatever post undergraduate schooling that my future entails. Not only
would achieving this goal be beneficial to my future career, I hope to honor Christ by working
hard in everything that I do, and this is one way that I can do that. This goal is measurable
because I can regularly check my grades to make sure that I am staying on track with each class
to attain this goal. I believe that getting all A's is also achievable is I remained focused and
driven, delegating ahead of time the study time that I will need to be successful in each of my
classes. For each hour that I spend in a class, I will plan on spending at least three hours outside of
class with the covered material to be successful. This can be realistic if I am careful to make sure
that I don't commit myself too heavily to extracurricular activities. While I will be checking my
grades weekly, half–way through the semester I will evaluate my study strategies, and whether they
were successful or need to be changed to stay on target. Ultimately, I would like to see myself
meet this goal at the end of the semester and carry the habits that I have learned to the rest of my
college career. Spiritually, I know that this time is quintessential in the establishing of my faith and
walk with Christ. My goal is to set habits and practices for myself that will help me grow spiritually.

The Dreaded English Class
The dreaded English 102. Could this be my final English course in my career as a student? I don't
know for sure. I still need to decide what my major will be in. There is something that I know for
sure, that is, needing to take this class to move on. I am not certain how my time in this class will
go, but I plan to work hard to get the best grade that I can. Hence, I have decided to get this out of
the way now, I look to fine–tune my writing skills, and I expect this course to help me understand
my writing style. To start, I chose this class because I knew that eventually I would need to
complete it. What better time to do it, than right now? I had recently completed a math course
this past semester, so I did not want to take another stressful class that I find to not be my
strongest subject right after. My brother and some friends have mentioned that this course isn't as
bad as it is said to be. That is what pushed me to sign up and attempt to complete this course. Being
a part time student and working full time is a lot to balance on ones plate. I have learned that
from experience. I formally was a full time student and worked part time, but the roles tend to
reverse once you find yourself struggling to pay bills. Seeing that this class isn't as costly as a
math course, and isn't as time restraining either. This course will give me more time at work and
more time to study. This sums up the reasons I chose to complete English 102. I hope to gain more

My Life As A College Student Essay
Over the course of the last semester, I grew tremendously, not just as a writer but as a student. I
learned skills and tactics that will last me throughout my life and will benefit me once I begin the
next four years of my life as a college student. This early gateway into college writing provided me
with exposure to the expectations that I will face in the college classroom. This will come in
handy in the English classroom, as well as in every subject I will face over the course of the next
four years, and beyond. Writing is a key skill that communicates ideas and information, and is
essential to being successful. Whether I go into the music industry or find myself in a
completely unforeseen career, it is certain that I will use my writing skills at some point. This
class sharpened those skills and prepared me for the future in ways no high school english class
could. This class has challenged me to think more in depth than I ever have before. It forced me to
use my writing as a means of expressing knowledge, ideas, and facts in a clear organized manner. In
order to accomplish the goals of each paper assigned, I found new ways to present the same
information. For example, in every essay I included the theme that governments should be more
involved in the fight against cyber warfare. However, I presented this idea in each paper in different
forms. In the summary, I simply stated what an author of a certain article had to say about this idea.
In the critique, I discussed

Everyone should have personal goals that evolve around anything that needs to be accomplished. I
set goals on a daily basis. One goal that I seem to have not truly focused on has been my college
education. Considering all things, I decided I needed to focus on my college education. The first
thing I needed to accomplish was to enroll in an institution for higher learning. Now that my
enrollment is complete, I am an official student at the University enrolled in the undergraduate
program for business management. As a student at the university, I now have to set personal goals
so that I will be successful in my endeavors. My personal goals are to gain personal growth and
development and graduate from my undergraduate program in business...show more content...
The most important to me while attending the University is to graduate with honors. I know that I
have the potential and what it takes to accomplish this. In order to graduate with honors I will
have to study and prioritize, taking my education seriously. By taking my academic affairs
seriously and being a positive influence on myself, I know that I will achieve my goals. This
means that I will have to complete all assignments, assuring accuracy and the quality of my work.
Assuring that I complete all assignments, I will also need to do all assignments before they are due.
This will allow me time to make sure that all corrections are done prior to me turning the
assignments in.
To help me along my journey to success, I have made two colorful, eye catching boards that I will
allow myself to look at everyday. The first goal board that I have is a weekly board that I will use
for each class. On this board I will have my individual weekly assignments and my team weekly
assignments with start and due dates. Also I will have contact numbers and email addresses for
people who will benefit me in my course. This would include all my classmates, teammates, and
instructor. As I complete an assignment I will draw a line through that assignment. The second
board that I have displays all my overall personal goals. On this board I will have an outline of all my

Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class
has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college
writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt
limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays
to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is
why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the
first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate
my voice more in my essays and I believe...show more content...
The most important improvement for me in this course was on my grammar. I was not aware of
the comma rules before. It was shocking to see where commas are to be put and the places that I
usually miss. The Hacker lessons we did in and out of class on commas have improved my
grammar significantly. Looking back through all of my graded essays it is unbelievable how
many commas I have actually missed. Also, writing the essays in MLA format and including
work cited entries and quotations, has helped me become more comfortable with it. When I write
essays now, I do not hesitate or get anxious if I have to add a work cited entry. However, even
though I have know a little bit more of when to use commas and have a little bit more knowledge
about grammar there is still a lot of room for improvement. Some areas where I need to improve
include transitions between paragraphs, being to repetitive, and my conclusions. This class has
definitely helped me make my transitions better; however they still could use some improvement. I
have to make sure that the reader can comprehend my thought process and that my transitions do
not get in the way of the flow of the paper. In some of the rough drafts for my essays I could not
find links between paragraphs at all but after work shopping in class I believe that they have
significantly improved. I also need to make sure that I do not repeat the same ideas or words too

Asking For Help Essay
Prior to completing Skip Downing's "On Course Self Assessment," I was starting to realize one of
my most sabotaging behaviors. I find it incredibly difficult to say a three–word phrase. When it
comes to assisting others, I have no problem lending a helping hand, but I cannot tell anyone that "I
need help." In writing this paper I hope to recognize the roots of my problem and adopt a plan to
aid me in overcoming this negative behavior. After I took the self–assessment and received a low
score in the area of interdependence, I began considering options for overcoming my hesitation so
that I may become a successful student. The first strategy is to learn that I cannot do everything by
myself. Typically, I never ask for...show more content...
We cannot know everything, and we can all benefit from mutual helping relationships. I may need
someone to explain something discussed in Psychology class today and that person may need the
favor returned for English. Working together and helping others is important in almost every area
of life. I do not need to feel ashamed for reaching out first. As a result of doing the assessment, I
realized that I seldom request and often reject offers of assistance. A successful student would
employ interdependence by actively seeking out mutually supportive relationships to help achieve
their goals and dreams, while doing the same for others in return. I chose this topic because I do not
want to be a struggling student! Interdependence is a key factor in being successful in college. In
order to obtain a degree a college student must do well in all areas of their studies. To accomplish
that, he or she must comprehend the subject matter taught and apply what they learn. If a student
does not understand something and refuses to ask for help when it is readily available, they are
only hurting themselves. Three little words can make all the difference. By asking someone who is
more knowledgeable than they may be in a certain area, they could find the missing pieces that lead
to total understanding. This will enable them to perform better on my assignments and to keep
moving forward towards that college degree. College can be an

My Personal Goals as a Student Essay
My Personal Goals as a Student
An obvious goal as a working adult returning to school is, of course, to earn a degree. My overall
goal is no different than any other student, however, I also have several personal goals I hope to
achieve while attending the University. Some of these goals are to acquire new skills and enhance
my current business abilities, to apply what I learn in the classroom to forward my career, and to
feel personal satisfaction of finishing something I started. Already having experience in the business
world has proven to me that it is essential to have skills to maintain and improve daily functions.

By just going through the motions of coming to work everyday, only getting done what has to be
done, and going home at the end of the day, one might realize that an everyday routine can quickly
turn into a mundane professional life. At the same time, if a person does all of these things, but
shows a bit of initiative to gain more knowledge of the job, they may see an opportunity to
slightly move up in the company. The latter is my situation. My experience and knowledge of my
department and its systems have afforded me the opportunity to move up within the department
over the past five years, but I'm beginning to see a limit of how far those skills alone will allow
me to climb. Being an expert in my field of pharmaceutical benefits doesn't translate into managing
personnel just as knowing how to complete a task doesn't mean I'm able to give a clear
presentation on how it should be done. Sure, I've been rewarded for the work I've done and
knowledge I've obtained, but at some point, my employer will eventually see that more is needed to
continue to promote me to higher, more management focused positions. My goal is to complete these
courses and obtain my degree to prove that, if the situation arises, I can be the right person for the
job. A more personal goal of mine is to finish what I've started. After high school,

The Pros And Cons Of College Writing
Why do some college freshmen find it harder to write an essay in college than in high school?"
College freshmen usually struggle with the transition from high school writing to college writing.
They do not know that the writing in college has a lot of differences. They also do not know that
college writing has different rules. These students get confused with these rules. There are many
other reasons cause these struggles. There are different styles in writing, for example: In college

they face when writing a college essay? It took them five minutes to answer this question. As I

the difficulties they face to write an essay are grammatic errors, punctuations, sentence structure, and
organization. Another key thing to remember is that they have problem with wording the sentences
correctly. So, the reader can understand the writing clearly. Likewise, many students have details
and ideas on paper. But sometimes don't know how to organize the writing process. Other student
said that they have trouble to start the first paragraph and and have a lack of motivation. I t takes
them long time to start the essay. Furthermore, some answers were interested. Few students don't
want to stress their self. So, they never think to revise their final draft. One of the problems I

My Experience With Academic Writing
My experience with my academic writing it comes from the past years in different classes, that I

department, a law class. In my law class I had to write an academic paper, explain the different
types a law that will apply in a wind energy industry. This academicwriting was done in the law
class, but that was different from English class. The writing in the science class was little bit like
the writing that was done in English 1301 at South Plains. My experience in the class was to
compare and summaries article that was chosen by the professor. In this class, it helps me to
improve my writing skills little bit more that my high school English. One of my weaknesses in
writing is my grammar, that I will go in depth by going to the writing center and other helpful
resources. In 1302 I will learn more in depth how to write a research paper, so that I can go more
in depth on my work and can use all the different sources on an essay paper. Me intend to build my
strength to get better on my grammar is to make sure that I read aloud for my research or
argument paper that will be writing for this semester. My goal for this class is to finish with a

My gift is in teaching. I have not only personally been the beneficiary of great teaching, but I am
fortunate to say that my mother is one of the greatest I have ever witnessed. I have seen the impact

countless unpaid hours she has given to her students. She has been their friend, confidant, and
mentor. I only wish that I can live up to her legacy.
I have many personal goals that I hope to accomplish during and after my college education
experience. One of my main goals is to carry the community service projects I have been
participating in to college. I would love to work with cancer patients, tutor children at a local
school, teach a Sunday School class at a local church, work with Habitat for Humanity, and countless
other activities. I know that I probably will not have time to accomplish all the goals that I have for

I have a great deal of confidence that given the chance I will accomplish much in college. My
parents are hard–working people who make a little too much for financial aid but not enough to
completely further my education. I have worked extremely hard all through high school to make the
top grades. My grades are very good, but not the best of my class. I have been an officer of many

Benefits of a College Degree Essay

There are many factors that go into one's decision. There are pros and cons to going to college
and also there are pros and cons for not going to college. But the decision that will give someone
the better opportunity to have a more successful life is to go to college. The money that one will
earn after getting a college degree will be more than the money a person will make without getting

Although a person in college can have a job, that person cannot work as much as someone who is
not in college. At first this is a positive for not going to college because that would mean more
money for the people not going to college. That is true but over years; the people with a college
degree will end up with more money because of the higher annual salaries. The benefits of a
college degree are not just for money, but also a college degree will also give a person more
career options. A person with a college degree will have more career options than someone
without a college degree because employers will see that one has a college degree and think that
person knows what to do and can do the job well. Employers want the best person for the job and

Help Writing College Essay

  • 1. The transition from high school into college is undoubtedly a very important time in the lives of many young people. It is a huge step, and a huge change. There are some who cling to their fading high–school life, reluctant to let go and move on. Many of my friends would fall under this category. Some of them seem more prepared for the increasingly near future than others, and they will have varying degrees of success in beginning their college experience, be it near home or hours away. But Natalie is different than they are. Rather than getting caught up in the sentimentality of it all, she is embracing the looming future with open arms. Natalie Rogers is ready to move on. She is an 18–year–old senior at Coleman High School, and she feels absolutely prepared to move into the next stage of her life. This puts her in the national minority. According to a country–wide survey, 45% of high school seniors feel prepared for college and a career. She's not alone, however, in looking forward to the freedom and independence generally associated with college life. "I'm really excited that I get to be on my own, make a lot of my own decisions, and kind of learn how to be independent. Because I haven't gotten a lot of that". One thing that has become apparent to me is the value that Natalie places on independence. However, in certain situations, she does consider herself to be dependent on others, sometimes very much so. I asked her if she considered herself to be an independent Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Importance of English Class Essay Taking an English class during college is important for a fundamental education, because regardless of the major I chose, I must able to communicate well in written and spoken words. After all, in the future, when I try to obtain a job, the corporations will most likely base their decision on my ability to express ideas and opinions in a sophisticated and correct manner. Therefore, increasing my knowledge and skills in English will increase my opportunities to success. Yet, currently, many students try to avoid taking English class due to the great amount of practice and dedication that requires. This, in the long run, decreases their abilities to analyze, express and critique ideas. Personally, taking an English class has made my...show more content... As a foreign student, English class gave me the opportunity to improve my overall knowledge about the language. Another writing mistake was thinking what I was going to write in Spanish and then try to translate it to English. Nevertheless, this does not work. The grammar and idiom differences would make my writing sound confusing and clumsy. In the future, this could affect my performance as a professional. And since a sloppy writing will most likely reflect on a person's poor vocabulary, I am presently learning to improve my vocabulary by reading frequently since it helps me to be exposing to new words, sentence structures, and styles techniques, which I could use in my future assignments. During the semester, I learned to focus on my strengths and work on my weaknesses. I could use my organization, paragraph structure, and transition skills to keep high quality writing. This will be helpful to assure an above average grade when I take English 102 during the summer. On the other hand, although students often try to avoid their weaknesses, I see them as useful. Knowing my weaknesses gives me the opportunity to work on them until they become strengths. For example, as I mentioned before, organization is presently my biggest strength. However, at the beginning of the course, it wasn't. I had to practice and work on it until it became natural and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Essay About My English Class I can remember seeing that I had to take an English class my first semester of college. I was already overwhelmed with starting college, and having to write college essays made me get even more nervous. I sat down with my mom and decided to look at the English classes available, and I finally decided that I had to take an evening class to make it work in my schedule. The first day of English came and now looking back it was not as bad as I thought. It made me a better writer and be where I am today. It may have taken me some time to get where I am today, but at least I am on the right track. English Composition helped me realize that I am my own author and have strengths that I did not realize I had. When I first started college I did not know what to expect with an English class. I liked writing about topics that interested me, but high school did not allow me to do that. I took American History and we would have to write...show more content... I learned many techniques from my professor. He helped me realize that it is okay to have your own opinion as long as you back it up. He showed me that I am an author when I did not think I was. He also told us to read our essays out loud when we proofread, and I always did this technique before submitting all my essays. I can remember having to write my first essay and I was scared, because I felt like I had to get a good grade. I started thinking about what tools I could use to help me, and I decided to go to The Learning Center to help with my essay. When I went there they would make edits to my essay and then explain what I should change. The tutor noticed I used multiple choppy sentences and commas in spots there should not be. Sometimes I would even go twice to make sure I did not miss any minor mistakes. Going there helped me feel more confident as a writer and I learned from my mistakes. I had many helpful techniques from multiple people that shaped me into the writer I am Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Reflective Essay on College Writing Reflective Essay on College Writing This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the timerestraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I...show more content... I definitely learned a great deal from our discussions about this book. I really did not like it at all until the class sat down and analyzed the many levels Conrad addressed in his story. I thought the endless paradoxes in the book, once brought to light, were actually very interesting. My favorite section, however, was the poetry unit. I really enjoyed the poem ?The Blues? by Billy Collins the most because of my respect for music. I think Collins really makes a point in his poem about just how important music is and how it allows people who are very different to connect on many levels. I also loved ?Love Calls Us to the Things of This World? by Richard Wilbur. The imagery in this poem was absolutely amazing, and I adored how he made the ordinary things seem mystical with his words. I loved how the laundry became angels. If only we could look at the world from that point of view more often, it would be a much happier place. The criticisms in college have even been somewhat enjoyable and interesting to read. I think I began to like the stories and poems we read in class more and more as we discussed them and looked at different authorities? opinions. I found a lot of the information in the databases very useful. For the Antigone research project, the JSTORS database gave me hundreds of articles dealing with my topic. I could narrow down what I was looking for and find numerous Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Essay on Returning to College as an Adult Returning to College as an Adult Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college....show more content... There are many options available from low–tuition state universities, financial aid, employer tuition reimbursement. In some cases, you can be eligible for various types of grants. Being a single mother or just shopping at a certain supermarket can make you eligible. There is a misconception about the professors (sometimes called instructors). Questions arise such as; will they make time for me when I need the extra help? How large will the class be? Will they understand that this may not be as easy for me as it is for others? These questions enter our minds and may seem discouraging at times. Through my personal experiences I have found that classroom atmospheres may not always be for everyone. However, that does not mean college life is not for everyone. You can take many alternative routes. You can take advantage of telecourses, online courses, accelerated courses and many other options that may be more suitable. My professors have been great. They come in earlier to help and return e–mails and/or phone calls promptly. You also expect to be able to accomplish your work quickly and with minimal stress, leaving more time to work and spend with your family. You expect to be able to do what you did in high school and still pass. However college, by far, is nowhere as easy as most anticipate. You have to study, unlike high school, where you could float on by with A's by seldomly attending class. College is harder than high school and therefore Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Expectations And Expectations In College Expectations and Goals As a new freshman, the next four years of my life can seem extremely daunting, with huge possibilities as to the kind of person that I want to be when I graduate. College is known as a transformation period in the life of a young adult, and I hope to take full advantage of this time. By setting expectations and goals for myself, hopefully I can be successful as I seek out the person that God wants me to be. I have set up, and outlined, academic, spiritual, and personal goals to achieve my first semester here at college. For this semester, I have set a high expectation for myself academically. Specifically, I would like to be able to maintain all A's, and therefore a 4.0 GPA. If I am able to do this, and possibly continue it on through all eight semesters of my college career, I will be a more competitive applicant for PA school, or med school, or whatever post undergraduate schooling that my future entails. Not only would achieving this goal be beneficial to my future career, I hope to honor Christ by working hard in everything that I do, and this is one way that I can do that. This goal is measurable because I can regularly check my grades to make sure that I am staying on track with each class to attain this goal. I believe that getting all A's is also achievable is I remained focused and driven, delegating ahead of time the study time that I will need to be successful in each of my classes. For each hour that I spend in a class, I will plan on spending at least three hours outside of class with the covered material to be successful. This can be realistic if I am careful to make sure that I don't commit myself too heavily to extracurricular activities. While I will be checking my grades weekly, half–way through the semester I will evaluate my study strategies, and whether they were successful or need to be changed to stay on target. Ultimately, I would like to see myself meet this goal at the end of the semester and carry the habits that I have learned to the rest of my college career. Spiritually, I know that this time is quintessential in the establishing of my faith and walk with Christ. My goal is to set habits and practices for myself that will help me grow spiritually. • 7. The Dreaded English Class The dreaded English 102. Could this be my final English course in my career as a student? I don't know for sure. I still need to decide what my major will be in. There is something that I know for sure, that is, needing to take this class to move on. I am not certain how my time in this class will go, but I plan to work hard to get the best grade that I can. Hence, I have decided to get this out of the way now, I look to fine–tune my writing skills, and I expect this course to help me understand my writing style. To start, I chose this class because I knew that eventually I would need to complete it. What better time to do it, than right now? I had recently completed a math course this past semester, so I did not want to take another stressful class that I find to not be my strongest subject right after. My brother and some friends have mentioned that this course isn't as bad as it is said to be. That is what pushed me to sign up and attempt to complete this course. Being a part time student and working full time is a lot to balance on ones plate. I have learned that from experience. I formally was a full time student and worked part time, but the roles tend to reverse once you find yourself struggling to pay bills. Seeing that this class isn't as costly as a math course, and isn't as time restraining either. This course will give me more time at work and more time to study. This sums up the reasons I chose to complete English 102. I hope to gain more writing experience in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. My Life As A College Student Essay Over the course of the last semester, I grew tremendously, not just as a writer but as a student. I learned skills and tactics that will last me throughout my life and will benefit me once I begin the next four years of my life as a college student. This early gateway into college writing provided me with exposure to the expectations that I will face in the college classroom. This will come in handy in the English classroom, as well as in every subject I will face over the course of the next four years, and beyond. Writing is a key skill that communicates ideas and information, and is essential to being successful. Whether I go into the music industry or find myself in a completely unforeseen career, it is certain that I will use my writing skills at some point. This class sharpened those skills and prepared me for the future in ways no high school english class could. This class has challenged me to think more in depth than I ever have before. It forced me to use my writing as a means of expressing knowledge, ideas, and facts in a clear organized manner. In order to accomplish the goals of each paper assigned, I found new ways to present the same information. For example, in every essay I included the theme that governments should be more involved in the fight against cyber warfare. However, I presented this idea in each paper in different forms. In the summary, I simply stated what an author of a certain article had to say about this idea. In the critique, I discussed Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Everyone should have personal goals that evolve around anything that needs to be accomplished. I set goals on a daily basis. One goal that I seem to have not truly focused on has been my college education. Considering all things, I decided I needed to focus on my college education. The first thing I needed to accomplish was to enroll in an institution for higher learning. Now that my enrollment is complete, I am an official student at the University enrolled in the undergraduate program for business management. As a student at the university, I now have to set personal goals so that I will be successful in my endeavors. My personal goals are to gain personal growth and development and graduate from my undergraduate program in business...show more content... The most important to me while attending the University is to graduate with honors. I know that I have the potential and what it takes to accomplish this. In order to graduate with honors I will have to study and prioritize, taking my education seriously. By taking my academic affairs seriously and being a positive influence on myself, I know that I will achieve my goals. This means that I will have to complete all assignments, assuring accuracy and the quality of my work. Assuring that I complete all assignments, I will also need to do all assignments before they are due. This will allow me time to make sure that all corrections are done prior to me turning the assignments in. To help me along my journey to success, I have made two colorful, eye catching boards that I will allow myself to look at everyday. The first goal board that I have is a weekly board that I will use for each class. On this board I will have my individual weekly assignments and my team weekly assignments with start and due dates. Also I will have contact numbers and email addresses for people who will benefit me in my course. This would include all my classmates, teammates, and instructor. As I complete an assignment I will draw a line through that assignment. The second board that I have displays all my overall personal goals. On this board I will have an outline of all my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe...show more content... The most important improvement for me in this course was on my grammar. I was not aware of the comma rules before. It was shocking to see where commas are to be put and the places that I usually miss. The Hacker lessons we did in and out of class on commas have improved my grammar significantly. Looking back through all of my graded essays it is unbelievable how many commas I have actually missed. Also, writing the essays in MLA format and including work cited entries and quotations, has helped me become more comfortable with it. When I write essays now, I do not hesitate or get anxious if I have to add a work cited entry. However, even though I have know a little bit more of when to use commas and have a little bit more knowledge about grammar there is still a lot of room for improvement. Some areas where I need to improve include transitions between paragraphs, being to repetitive, and my conclusions. This class has definitely helped me make my transitions better; however they still could use some improvement. I have to make sure that the reader can comprehend my thought process and that my transitions do not get in the way of the flow of the paper. In some of the rough drafts for my essays I could not find links between paragraphs at all but after work shopping in class I believe that they have significantly improved. I also need to make sure that I do not repeat the same ideas or words too many Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Asking For Help Essay Prior to completing Skip Downing's "On Course Self Assessment," I was starting to realize one of my most sabotaging behaviors. I find it incredibly difficult to say a three–word phrase. When it comes to assisting others, I have no problem lending a helping hand, but I cannot tell anyone that "I need help." In writing this paper I hope to recognize the roots of my problem and adopt a plan to aid me in overcoming this negative behavior. After I took the self–assessment and received a low score in the area of interdependence, I began considering options for overcoming my hesitation so that I may become a successful student. The first strategy is to learn that I cannot do everything by myself. Typically, I never ask for...show more content... We cannot know everything, and we can all benefit from mutual helping relationships. I may need someone to explain something discussed in Psychology class today and that person may need the favor returned for English. Working together and helping others is important in almost every area of life. I do not need to feel ashamed for reaching out first. As a result of doing the assessment, I realized that I seldom request and often reject offers of assistance. A successful student would employ interdependence by actively seeking out mutually supportive relationships to help achieve their goals and dreams, while doing the same for others in return. I chose this topic because I do not want to be a struggling student! Interdependence is a key factor in being successful in college. In order to obtain a degree a college student must do well in all areas of their studies. To accomplish that, he or she must comprehend the subject matter taught and apply what they learn. If a student does not understand something and refuses to ask for help when it is readily available, they are only hurting themselves. Three little words can make all the difference. By asking someone who is more knowledgeable than they may be in a certain area, they could find the missing pieces that lead to total understanding. This will enable them to perform better on my assignments and to keep moving forward towards that college degree. College can be an Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. My Personal Goals as a Student Essay My Personal Goals as a Student An obvious goal as a working adult returning to school is, of course, to earn a degree. My overall goal is no different than any other student, however, I also have several personal goals I hope to achieve while attending the University. Some of these goals are to acquire new skills and enhance my current business abilities, to apply what I learn in the classroom to forward my career, and to feel personal satisfaction of finishing something I started. Already having experience in the business world has proven to me that it is essential to have skills to maintain and improve daily functions. Three skills I'd personally like to improve on are my organizational, time management, and presentation...show more content... By just going through the motions of coming to work everyday, only getting done what has to be done, and going home at the end of the day, one might realize that an everyday routine can quickly turn into a mundane professional life. At the same time, if a person does all of these things, but shows a bit of initiative to gain more knowledge of the job, they may see an opportunity to slightly move up in the company. The latter is my situation. My experience and knowledge of my department and its systems have afforded me the opportunity to move up within the department over the past five years, but I'm beginning to see a limit of how far those skills alone will allow me to climb. Being an expert in my field of pharmaceutical benefits doesn't translate into managing personnel just as knowing how to complete a task doesn't mean I'm able to give a clear presentation on how it should be done. Sure, I've been rewarded for the work I've done and knowledge I've obtained, but at some point, my employer will eventually see that more is needed to continue to promote me to higher, more management focused positions. As I suspected, some of the answers I receive has something in common. Another key thing to remember is that they have problem with wording the sentences correctly. So, the reader can understand the writing clearly. Other student said that they have trouble to start the first paragraph and and have a lack of motivation. I t takes them long time to start the essay. Furthermore, some answers were interested. • 16. For this scholarship, I wanted to make whoever is reading this short essay to know who I truly am and who I truly want to become. I am a 17–year–old girl with aspirations and dreams that I am determined to reach. Growing up in a religious family, I was always brought up with specific morals and values but that has shaped me into the person I am today. I grew up in a family where their education was not nearly as good as mine is today. Being the first one in my family to go to a four–year college makes me want to push harder to make them happy. As a young child, I always had an interest in cooking, reading, and playing tennis. The qualities that I have used doing these things has shaped me into the person I am today. These hobbies taught me...show more content... Having the sense that I pushed myself the hardest I can and knowing that I won't stop as I further my education makes all of the obstacles worthwhile. Scholarships in a way have motivated me to do more as a student. I wanted to be able to do more like scholarships to benefit myself rather than having that feeling that I didn't do as much for myself then I should have. Being considered for a scholarship will give me the feeling that all the dedication that I've put into my work for the past four years was all worth it. Just the satisfaction of knowing that I put my all into it is just a good feeling as being awarded a scholarship. Scholarships are meant to push students farther in what they want so being able to do this has made me think of all the great things that can come out of things like this. I've never stopped trying at anything I've done and I will continue this as I go further in my education and career. I would like to advocate for my future students that always being able to motivate and have faith in yourself will always get you to you truly desire. I've had faith in myself as a student to try as hard as I possibly can to get these scholarships and to put my heart into Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. My Experience With Academic Writing My experience with my academic writing it comes from the past years in different classes, that I have taken here in Texas Tech University. I have taken some couple classes in the science department, a law class. In my law class I had to write an academic paper, explain the different types a law that will apply in a wind energy industry. This academicwriting was done in the law class, but that was different from English class. The writing in the science class was little bit like the writing that was done in English 1301 at South Plains. My experience in the class was to compare and summaries article that was chosen by the professor. In this class, it helps me to improve my writing skills little bit more that my high school English. One of my weaknesses in writing is my grammar, that I will go in depth by going to the writing center and other helpful resources. In 1302 I will learn more in depth how to write a research paper, so that I can go more in depth on my work and can use all the different sources on an essay paper. Me intend to build my strength to get better on my grammar is to make sure that I read aloud for my research or argument paper that will be writing for this semester. My goal for this class is to finish with a good grade and learn a lot from the professor. Also, to make sure that I use all help that I get from the class that I will be attending during this semester. I believe that each person should leave the world a little better than how they found it. Community service has held a huge part of my life already. I currently am very involved with a program called Candlelighters. Candlelighters is a program that works with cancer patients and their families. As a part of the Candlelighters program I have seen many children lose their lives to cancer. Each child has left a mark on my heart, and I am a better person for knowing them. I have not only personally been the beneficiary of great teaching, but I am fortunate to say that my mother is one of the greatest I have ever witnessed. I have seen the impact that she has made on thousands of students that have walked through her door. I have also seen the countless unpaid hours she has given to her students. She has been their friend, confidant, and mentor. I only wish that I can live up to her legacy. I have many personal goals that I hope to accomplish during and after my college education experience. One of my main goals is to carry the community service projects I have been participating in to college. I would love to work with cancer patients, tutor children at a local school, teach a Sunday School class at a local church, work with Habitat for Humanity, and countless other activities. I know that I probably will not have time to accomplish all the goals that I have for college, but I know I can conquer some of them, and I will. I have a great deal of confidence that given the chance I will accomplish much in college. My parents are hard–working people who make a little too much for financial aid but not enough to completely further my education. I have worked extremely hard all through high school to make the top grades. My grades are very good, but not the best of my class.
