3. INTRODUCTION:
What’s diving?
Diving is the practice of going underwater either of breathing apparatus or by
breath-holding.
There are different types of diving:
• Scuba diving
• Surface supplied diving
• Free-diving
• Snorkelling
• Saturation diving
What kind of people can do this sport?
If you want to go diving, you must go with an instructor. To practice this sport alone
you must know basic physics and physiology to understand the human body under
the pressure of the water, and avoid risky behaviours that can lead to serious
accidents or even fatal.
4. Types of diving:
• Scuba diving(1): the diver uses breath apparatus to
breathe underwater. (1)
• Surface supplied diving(2): the diver uses equipment with breathing gas using a diver’s
umbilical from the surface.
(2)
• Free-diving(3): does not involve a breathing apparatus,
the diver relies on his or her ability to hold his or her breath until
resurfacing.
• Snorkelling(4): the diver is equipped with a diving mask,
a tube called snorkel and the swim fins.
(5) (4)
(3)
• Saturation diving(5): the diver goes very deep, so they use a diving technique that
helps divers to reduce the risk of decompression sickness when they work at great depth
for long time.
6. Individual or team sport?
- risky if practising alone.
Equipment needed
• Diving suit: designed to protect a diver from the
underwater environment.
• Scuba set: is an independent breathing set that provides the diver
with the breathing gas to breathe underwater.
• Dive computer: device used by a diver to measure the time and
depth of a dive, so the diver can avoid decompression sickness.
• Diver propulsion vehicle: is an item of diving equipment used by
divers to increase their speed.
7. • Mask: is an item of diving equipment that allows scuba divers,
free divers and snorkelers to see clearly underwater.
• Fins: there are like duck feet. You put there in your feet
to swim better.
• Snorkel: is a breathing tube used to swim underwater.
• Buoyancy control device: is a piece of diving equipment used to
keep the divers to float stably.
8. How and where it is played:
-know how to swim.
- played under seawater , lakes or underwater caves.
What is the aim of the sport?
Professional: scuba diving can be practiced to help with construction or investigations underwater. Also
scuba diving is useful in sea accidents.
Hobby: Scuba diving can also be a fun activity. Many people during their holiday like to do a scuba
diving course. They can see the sea life, such as, interesting sea creatures and the beautiful coral and
plants.
A PADI certificate is needed for diving anywhere (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) ..There
are different levels and it is very expensive to get one.
9. Who controls its rules?
These rules are controlled by the WCUA (World Confederation of Underwater Activities).
Diving rules:
1. Never walk on the alive corals and underwater plants.
2. Be careful about your buoyancy.
3. Stay away from the corals and other animals, and do not
remove the sediments.
4. Do not go away from your boat. Control your anchor.
5. Do not touch or give food to the animals.
6. Do not buy as a souvenir or collection corals and shells.
7. Be careful when you dive in caves because bubbles can damage
the delicate environment.
8. Keep the diving place clean.
9. Study the underwater live and do not damage it.
11. IS IT PLAYED IN MANY COUNTRIES?
Yes, is it played in many countries:
• Argentina • Republic of Madagascar
• Australia • United Mexican States
• Bahames
• Mauricio
• Bermudes
• Brasil
• Republic of Panama
• Chile • Dominican Republic
• Colombia • Independent State of Samoa
• Cuba • Republic of Seychelles
• Spain • Túnez
• USA • Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela
• Philippines
• Haiti
• Republic of Indonesia
• Caiman Islands
• Cook Islands
• Feroe Islands
• Salomon Islands
• Jamaica Islands
12. WHERE CAN THE SPORT BE WATCHED?
This sport can be watched in the television. You can’t watch it in live because is
underwater, so maybe you can see something if you are on a boat or maybe near to
the coast.
WHO WATCHED IS IT?
This sport is watched for people who
are interested in Scuba Diving and
their fans.
13. WHO ARE FAMOUS DIVERS?
FEMALE: MALE:
Natalia Molchanova: William Trubridge:
• 8th-5-1962 • 24th-5-1980

medals and 2 more with apnea, 101 m deep.
her team. • Lung capacity: 8,1L
15. WHAT MAKES IT ENJOYABLE?
What makes diving enjoy,
it’s going down in the sea
and enjoy the underwater
landscape. To see fishes
and other sea creatures.
Live an experience in
another fantastic world.
16. WHAT SKILLS DOES IT CALL UPON?
• You have to be healthy.
• The height and the weight are not important.
• If you want to go alone you must know: physics and physiology.
• You have to know how to manage the equipment.
• Before going diving in the sea you should go to classes in a pool.
• The sounds, the vision, the temperature and the pressure are different between
the surface and underwater, you must know the differences.
• You must know what it’s happening around you in every moment.
• If you go deeper than 90m the mixture of air in the tanks has to be different than
the air in the surface. For instance you have to add helium.
You must be
healthy!
18. WHAT SORT OF INJURES MAY BE RISKED?
• The accident decompression is one of the most serious risks that can lead diving. Depending on the time
and the depth that you are in the water, your tissue1 accumulates a big quantity of gas.
• If you return very fast to the surface, these gases would form bubbles in your blood, causing embolism.
• The pulmonary expansion is the most fatal accident and easily avoidable. It cames when the diver is in
panic for have no oxygen. Then he starts to go very quickly to the surface. The pressure decreases2 and
the oxygen in the lungs increase3. So, the oxygen can’t get out of the mouth and the alveolus4 exploit.
• You have to be careful with the sea creatures like: sharks, whales…
1Tissue: teixits
2Decreases: disminuir
3Increase: augmentar
4Alveolus: alvèol
19. • COMMENTS:
We chose diving because we thought that it will be very interesting to know how
they work and discover new things about the sea.
We didn’t know anything about this sport, but doing this oral presentation we’ve
learned many things. It was a little difficult for us to search all the information.
Besides, we have found out information in Wikipedia, Google, web pages about
diving …
We enjoyed it very much, working with diving.
• PERSONAL OPINION:
Yvonne: for me this sport is very interesting and funny, to discover new things in
the sea: plants, animals… It was a good task to work with diving.
Elga: I really liked it doing this oral presentation because I enjoyed discovering a
diver’s life such as: their equipment, the types of diving, the dangers… Actually I
want to go diving in summer.
Aina: I liked a lot doing this work because we learned a lot of things about diving
and many new English words. We have had fun doing this assignment and we
really enjoyed. And now I wish I could dive with my friends.
Clàudia: I liked it a lot.
