I have a cunning plan
- 1. “I have a cunning plan …..” planning for real action
- 2. where do you want to be in 5 years time?
- 3. my approach? practical keep track make it happen
- 4. your plan needs to be … simple straightforward visible a filing cabinet or folder is no place for a plan!
- 5. are you SMART? strategic – does it get you to the ‘big picture’? measurable – how do you know when it’s done? achievable – can you do it; is it possible? realistic – this doesn’t mean it can’t be a stretch or a challenge time bound – when!
- 6. 1 objective necessary to achieve your 5 year goal
- 7. 3 methods necessary to achieve your objective
- 8. 2 actions necessary to achieve your strategy
- 9. this is how it should look objective strategy strategy strategy action action action action action
- 10. prioritisation strategy longer term, many parts, building blocks quick wins can be done quickly, easily and cheaply (?) impact what will have the most impact
- 11. achievable time frame each strategy has a time frame each action has a time frame to achieve each strategy be realistic review regularly
- 12. the big idea! ‘holding pen’, ‘tickler file’ strategies that don’t help you achieve your goals expensive – time and / or money peripheral goals / ideas things that don’t feel right (ever or just at this time)
- 13. top tips ‘15 minute mountain’ use your diary don’t put it off until “I have a week” be realistic about resources (including time and money) ask for / get help and support use outside expertise

- EXERCISE What is your ultimate goal to be achieved in the next 5 years? 1 goal can have multiple objectives
- Thanks to Steve Clark for the illustration – it shows that you plan is a working document!
- Probably all aware of the meaning of SMART targets – but there is a difference between Knowing and Owning
- EXERCISE - something like a mind-map Identify 1 objective that is necessary to achieve your 5 year goal Write the objective on a sticky note Stick it at the top of a piece of paper Why Post-It Notes? – really easy to move around
- EXERCISE Identify methods to achieve your objective Write each method on a separate sticky note (these are your strategies) Stick them underneath your objective and draw connecting lines / arrows
- EXERCISE Identify 2 actions necessary to achieve your strategy Write each action on a sticky note Stick the actions under the strategies and draw connecting lines / arrows
- Knowing when to do is more pressing then knowing what to do! That’s where prioritisation come in Strategy – contributes to the overall objective, e.g., blogging as a marketing strategy Quick Win – things that can be done quickly and easily right away, e.g., making a phone call, deciding to do / not to do something Impact – things that will have the most significant impact most quickly, e.g., personal image (haircut!), email signatire
