  1. Remember to change the background of your slides. Do not leave them white.
  2. Answer all the questions below. Repeat this process for all 6 character archetypes (Hero, Herald, Mentor, Shadow, Shape Shifter, Trickster). Character Background Information: (Who is this person? What information should the reader know about their upbringing, relationship to the hero and/or the quest, etc.?) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]To understand the hero and his journey, it’s necessary to understand the setting. The setting takes place in a galaxy colonized by humans, several centuries from now. As a result of this colonization, and natural evolution, roughly 5% of the population is exhibiting supernatural traits, with that number growing each year. These traits can be increased physical abilities, such as strength or healing, or mental abilities such as telepathy or telekinesis. The government of the colonies is going to great lengths to hide the existence of these individuals at the start of the story. James is a law enforcement professional, serving as a low-level security officer at the beginning of the story. He was raised almost entirely by his mother, and struggles to live up to the expectations set by his father. Though his father was a highly regarded special agent, James has failed the rigorous testing standards set in place to determine candidacy for the Warden program – a government agency dedicated to hunting and eliminating individuals with superhuman abilities. His call to action comes when a rogue agent begins committing terrorist acts in the name of bringing this agency down.  As the Warden program becomes increasingly strained, he is called upon to continue his father’s work. The early stages of the story revolve around his transition to the world of the supernatural, where he must combat individuals with supernatural physical prowess, destructive telekinetic abilities, and telepathic powers. The closer he gets to tracking down the rogue agent, however, the more it becomes clear that the line between allies and enemies is not as clear as he thought. His relationship to the quest places him at the center of the conflict between various factions. The hero’s journey that he undertakes involves an introspective look at his own motivations, in addition to the external conflicts that he’s forced to face. Throughout the course of the journey, his motivation shifts from a desire to live up to his father’s reputation, to a desire to forge a new path. This transformation is fueled by increased interaction with these “mutants”, and the troubling revelation that his father might not have been the hero he once believed. Archetypal Information: (How does this character archetype embody the function and purpose of the archetype as portrayed by this individual? Explain, analyze and discuss in detail this character's archetypal persona.) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Like most heroes in literature, James serves as the point of view character for the reader. This is the character whose motivations are explored most fully, and his journey is the one that follows the seventeen steps of the hero’s journey most closely. Like many heroes, James is plagued by inner demons, which often jeopardize his ability to complete the task at hand. Ultimately, though, the story sees him overcome both his inner turmoil, and his external conflicts.  While he’s not an objectively “good” character at all times, he is arguably the character that undergoes the greatest amount of change and growth. He is also the only character in this particular story who follows the pattern of leaving the “normal world” to pursue a quest to secure a boon or item for the community – in this case, equal rights and protections for those with supernatural abilities.PMAI Information: (Which PMAI archetype would this character score highest in? Why? Which PMAI archetype would this character score lowest in? Why?) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]James would score highest in the Orphan archetype, as the first part of his journey is heavily defined by a strained paternal relationship. Later on, other elements such as the Warrior and Caregiver archetypes take on a greater prominence, but only after he has resolved his parental issues. Initially, these unresolved issues override his better instincts, and cause him to act in a callous and uncaring manner in order to live up to the reputation of his father.James would likely score lowest in the Fool archetype, not because of any abundance of wisdom, but simply because he takes things very seriously. Other characters may try to get him to loosen up over time, but ultimately a sense of humor is not one of his strong suits. He is not able to simply enjoy life as it is, and even when he’s achieved his initial goal of stepping away from his father’s shadow, he simply moves on to another challenge.Image Link - your own designs or other source. 3. Answer all the questions below. Repeat this process for all 6 character archetypes (Hero, Herald, Mentor, Shadow, Shape Shifter, Trickster).Character Background Information: (Who is this person? What information should the reader know about their upbringing, relationship to the hero and/or the quest, etc.?) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Logan is a systems analyst who assists James remotely when James is in the field. He is a gifted engineer and programmer, but lacks the combat experience of many of the other Wardens. When James is recruited by the government, Logan is not initially asked to come with him, but follows along anyway in spite of the classified nature of the program.  Unlike the rest of the characters in this story, Logan never applied for military or government service. He worked as a private contractor, and worked his way up as an analyst to find work on various security projects. Throughout the quest, Logan is often the first one to learn about and communicate critical information, and his personal growth arc involves proving his worth to the team in spite of his lack of combat ability. Oftentimes, Logan serves as the “conscience” of the group within the story. Because he’s not a hardened veteran, he tends to be more idealistic and less pragmatic and realistic than the rest of his colleagues. This can be both a strength and a weakness, but the character consistently serves to act as a positive moral balance to the other characters involved. Archetypal Information: (How does this character archetype embody the function and purpose of the archetype as portrayed by this individual? Explain, analyze and discuss in detail.) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Logan embodies the Herald archetype by communicating changes and information within the context of the story. His position as a systems analyst allows him to act as the eyes and ears of the team, which enables him to communicate new information to the readers and the other characters in a way that feels organic and natural to the story – in essence, acting as the narrator who drives the story forward. He also fulfills the position of the Herald by challenging the Hero’s beliefs. When James begins hunting down people with supernatural abilities, Logan is the first person to challenge him. This is partially due to the fact that Logan has access to vast electronic data on all of these individuals, and so he comes to the table with a more complete picture than many of the other characters. Later on, Logan acts as a Herald to most of the civilized worlds when he begins hacking the communication networks to send out messages about what’s going on. PMAI Information: (Which PMAI archetype would this character score highest in? Why? Which PMAI archetype would this character score lowest in? Why?) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Logan would score highest in the Innocent archetype, as someone who generally tries to see the good in everyone and every situation. He frequently pushes for the most idealistic solution, even when it’s impractical or puts people in danger. An example of this would be his interactions with Conrad and Kaylani – the Trickster and Shapeshifter of this story. Despite their apparent lack of trustworthiness, he trusts their motives and their intentions on most matters. In some cases, this trust is validated; in other cases, this trust gets him into trouble. His weakest archetype would be the Ruler; he begins the story as a follower, and remains one throughout the story, with few exceptions. He has no aspirations for greater power, and is slow to take the mantle of leadership. When he is forced to take action, it’s usually on his own, and without the consent of the rest of the group. This is an example of poor leadership skills and an inability to get others to bend to his way of thinking. Image Link - your own designs or other source. 4. Answer all the questions below. Repeat this process for all 6 character archetypes (Hero, Herald, Mentor, Shadow, Shape Shifter, Trickster).Character Background Information: (Who is this person? What information should the reader know about their upbringing, relationship to the hero and/or the quest, etc.?) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Simon is a veteran officer of the Wardens, who has retired from field work and now focuses his efforts on training the younger generation. He served with James’s father, and is one of the few characters who knows the full history of his service. He is represented early on as gruff, competent, and not terribly personable. As the Mentor figure in the story, Simon guides James and his companions as they take on greater and greater challenges. Simon is a figure who has a lot of regret about his past, but considers himself powerless to change things on his own, so he passes that mantle on to a younger generation. Unlike most mentors, Simon is not initially perceived as a caring, nurturing figure. His attitude toward James seems dismissive, and he even actively works against his enlistment in the Wardens. However, it is later revealed that Simon didn’t want him following in the same path of his father. While not as overtly pro-mutant as Kaylani (see: Shapeshifter) or Logan, he has seen enough morally questionable activity by the agency to question some of the orders that come down. Archetypal Information: (How does this character archetype embody the function and purpose of the archetype as portrayed by this individual? Explain, analyze and discuss in detail.) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Simon represents the Mentor figure by giving James (and to a lesser extent, Logan, Conrad, and Kaylani) the tools and guide they need to succeed on their journey. This comes in two major forms – training, and guidance.  From a literal perspective, Simon is the one who provides most of the training and tactics required for fighting individuals with supernatural abilities. He also serves as the figure who helps the heroes transition from the mundane world to the supernatural world. As someone who has been fighting this fight for decades, he is the agency’s resident authority on combating mutants.  More importantly, however, is the guidance that he gives to the heroes along their journey. Though he lacks the confidence or the means to complete the journey himself, he cautions others against being too reckless in their approach.  Later on in the story, Simon fulfills a traditional (though not required) role of the mentor – the sacrifice. When the Wardens are shut down and James, Logan, and Conradare wanted for questioning, he displays his combat prowess by fighting off overwhelming numbers of military forces to allow them time to escape. The loss of the mentor serves as a pivotal catalyst for the Hero to step up and come into their own. PMAI Information: (Which PMAI archetype would this character score highest in? Why? Which PMAI archetype would this character score lowest in? Why?) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Simon is a quintessential Warrior archetype. He’s a soldier, and that’s really all he knows. This confrontational approach makes him a valuable asset when there’s a clear enemy to confront, but when the enemies are internal rather than external, he struggles with how to combat them. At the same time, this archetype does not depend heavily on compassion in the way that a Lover or Caregiver might, so he’s often slow to take action if it means violating his “soldier’s code” to do so.  His weakest archetype would be the Lover archetype. He has very few personal relationships, and his life has left him cold and relatively detached from others. He feels a certain responsibility for James, due to his friendship with his father, but beyond that he does not seek others for companionship or advice. Image Link - your own designs or other source. 5. Answer all the questions below. Repeat this process for all 6 character archetypes (Hero, Herald, Mentor, Shadow, Shape Shifter, Trickster).Character Background Information: (Who is this person? What information should the reader know about their upbringing, relationship to the hero and/or the quest, etc.?) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Representative Jonathan Cavil is the minority leader in the political realm of this story, representing the Authoritarian-leaning faction of the coalition government. At the beginning of this story, his political party is out of power, with a majority of planets electing a party that favors decentralized control. The sitting president favors “pro-integration” policies – namely, exposing supernatural individuals and integrating them into society – but is unable to make that position a political reality. Representative Cavil moves to undermine the efforts of the pro-mutant movement (considered by most of the public to be conspiracy theorists) at every turn.  He is a firm believer in the purity of humanity, and sees the rise in mutations and supernatural abilities as a threat to the stability of human civilization. Throughout the story, and in the years leading up to it, he pushes to keep the existence of supernatural individuals a secret. When their existence becomes public, he does everything in his power to deny their rights.  As his story progresses, he becomes increasingly dangerous. When the supernatural population is revealed to the public, he begins by pushing legislation to restrict their rights and track their movements. As he gains more power, he implements a coup against the government, overthrowing the more moderate forces pushing for equal rights. This action brings him into direct conflict with the heroes, particularly when he institutes martial law to enforce a crackdown.  Ultimately, his extreme measures – namely, instituting internment camps and abolishing the Wardens in favor of direct military control – incite a revolt. The heroes play a pivotal role in helping the rebellion and evacuating the former president, and set the stage for a civil war in later stories. Archetypal Information: (How does this character archetype embody the function and purpose of the archetype as portrayed by this individual? Explain, analyze and discuss in detail.) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Representative Cavil represents everything that the heroes eventually come to stand against. At the beginning of the story, they are largely on the same page. Once James and his companions get all the facts, however, they quickly realize that Cavil’s oppressive agenda amounts to bigotry at best, and genocide at worst.  Cavil functions mainly as a moral enemy to the heroes. His position as both their superior, and a major leader in a legitimately elected government, makes it difficult and morally questionable to act against him directly, but they have many fights with him by proxy.  Throughout the story, Cavil’s actions serve as roadblocks to the goals of the heroes, culminating with shutting down the Warden program and declaring the heroes to be fugitives. He’s also responsible for smearing the reputation of Kaylani (see: Shapeshifter) in an attempt to discredit her actions and turn the public against her. His actions also indirectly lead to the death of Simon, along with other agents – not to mention countless civilians and mutants.  PMAI Information: (Which PMAI archetype would this character score highest in? Why? Which PMAI archetype would this character score lowest in? Why?) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Cavil’s strongest archetype, unsurprisingly, is the Ruler archetype. At his best, he represents order, control, and a desire to keep the colonies safe. What makes him a dangerous opponent is the fact that his arguments do have some merit – for example, individuals who can control the thoughts of others can’t always be expected to integrate naturally into a democratic society. Ultimately, though, he desires power and control, and that desire for power is coupled with a deep distrust of the unfamiliar. For this reason, his weakest archetype is the Sage archetype. He lacks the wisdom or the desire to reexamine or reevaluate his beliefs, and stubbornly sticks to a single belief system rather than opening his mind to something different. 6. Answer all the questions below. Repeat this process for all 6 character archetypes (Hero, Herald, Mentor, Shadow, Shape Shifter, Trickster).Character Background Information: (Who is this person? What information should the reader know about their upbringing, relationship to the hero and/or the quest, etc.?) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Kaylani grew up on one of the poorest colonies in the system, and took up thievery at an early age. She was arrested and faced with prison time at an early age, but was given the chance to redeem herself by entering a government program – a training program for gifted candidates, who would eventually become Wardens. She excelled in her training, and was eventually assigned as biological weapons expert under the supervision of Jack Rabern – James’s father.  Though she was one of the agency’s most promising recruits, she became disillusioned with the mission of hunting others, and was horrified when the government used her research to unleash an attack to target the mutant population. The re-engineering of the chemicals failed, and thousands of civilians died in what was originally reported as a gas leak. The incident caused her to become withdrawn from her colleagues, and the conflict ultimately came to a head a year later when she and her mentor were assigned to eliminate a group of mutant refugees. Seeing that there were women and children involved, she went against orders to save the group, resulting in a confrontation with Jack that led to his death.  In the months leading up to James’s hero’s journey, Kaylani is on the run, branded as an anarchist and a terrorist. Throughout the story she has several (occasionally violent) confrontations with the main group of heroes, but ultimately convinces them to trust her. This trust is tested and broken several times – specifically, when she helps the government hunt down the Wardens after the agency is shut down, and again when James finds out that she killed his father. Archetypal Information: (How does this character archetype embody the function and purpose of the archetype as portrayed by this individual? Explain, analyze and discuss in detail.) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Kaylani represents the Shapeshifter archetype because of her enigmatic presence in the story. For most of the story, her motives are in question, and she seems to shift loyalties several times. She also acts as a catalyst for change in the hero, who eventually comes more in line with her way of thinking. Unfortunately, due to her past, she’s a hard person to trust.  It takes a long time for the group to trust her, and even after they do, she takes several actions that seem to be in opposition to them. At other times, she’s driven out of the group by a revelation beyond her control – specifically, when the revelation that she killed James’s father comes to light. She’s playing a long game, however, and her loyalty to the heroes (specifically Logan) wins out in the end. James eventually proves to her that he is not going to follow in the footsteps of his father, which causes her to rethink her opinion of him. In the meantime, however, she uses her past affiliations and talent for lying to act as a double and triple agent at various points in the story. PMAI Information: (Which PMAI archetype would this character score highest in? Why? Which PMAI archetype would this character score lowest in? Why?) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Though arguably the strongest warrior in the story, Kaylani’s main archetype is the Caregiver archetype. After she goes rogue, her primary motivation becomes keeping the supernatural population safe from harm. She risks her life and her reputation repeatedly to achieve this goal, and takes on vastly superior odds in order to keep them safe. Her concern for others usually acts as a strength, but can occasionally be a weakness. When the Wardens finally do catch her, it’s because she was forced to choose between escaping or letting Logan die after one of her lieutenants shoots him against her orders.  Her weakest archetype is the Innocent. Because she entered the Wardens at a young age, she quickly became jaded and cynical about the nature of people, and lost her innocence quickly. While she’s willing to risk her life for strangers, she frequently assumes the worst about those that she considers oppressors.Image Link - your own designs or other source. 7. Answer all the questions below. Repeat this process for all 6 character archetypes (Hero, Herald, Mentor, Shadow, Shape Shifter, Trickster).Character Background Information: (Who is this person? What information should the reader know about their upbringing, relationship to the hero and/or the quest, etc.?) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Conrad is a human with enhanced mental abilities, including genius-level intellect, eidetic memory, and an ability to sense the basic thought patterns of individuals around him. This ability is strongest when it comes to picking fellow mutants out of a crowd, due to their unique brain chemistry. These gifts allow Conrad to act as a sort of “chess master”, staying two steps ahead of others. Until recently, he used his gifts to advance his status in the criminal underworld, making big gains in the gambling sector. He has no qualms about using his abilities to gain an advantage over others, and at the beginning of the story does not appear to be operating on any moral compass at all.  Roughly a year before James began his journey, Conrad was captured by the Wardens and placed in solitary confinement without trial or parole. Due to the circumstances of the case, he is let out of prison on the condition that he will work with James to hunt down the government’s rogue agent. The Wardens strike this deal because of his unique ability to sense the locations of other mutants and anticipate their movements. However, Conrad has his own agenda, and frequently uses James and the other heroes as a means to achieve his own ends. Archetypal Information: (How does this character archetype embody the function and purpose of the archetype as portrayed by this individual? Explain, analyze and discuss in detail.) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Conrad embodies the Trickster archetype due to his chaotic role within the story. He’s neither opposing, nor fully supporting the hero in their quest. It’s not in his best interest to oppose the hero, because that would mean going back to prison. At the same time, however, he’s far more interested in promoting his own agenda of escaping and restoring his own power within the criminal underworld. To this end, he points out individuals that serve as an obstacle to both him and the hero.  As with many Tricksters, Conrad tends to be the smartest guy in the room, allowing him to make a fool of the hero on occasion. Due to his subservient role in the investigation, he’s not able to fully capitalize on this, but he works toward an endgame that ultimately involves his freedom. He doesn’t take the terrorist threat as seriously as the Wardens themselves, which allows him to act as the comic relief when all others are being deadly serious. PMAI Information: (Which PMAI archetype would this character score highest in? Why? Which PMAI archetype would this character score lowest in? Why?) [5-15 sentence MINIMUM]Conrad’s strongest archetype is the Jester archetype. He’s not motivated by heroism, honor, glory, or doing the right thing. He’s essentially a rogue – he’s driven by money, the love of a good time, and a desire to make the people in power look foolish. While his lawless antics place him on the wrong side of things prior to the beginning of the story, his anti-establishment ways make him an unlikely ally for the hero when the power balance shifts. If Logan is the angel on James’s shoulder, then Conrad is the devil on the other shoulder, encouraging him to eschew doing “the right thing” in favor of what’s most effective or damaging to the people in power.  His weakest archetype is that of the Caregiver. He’s entirely out for himself, and unlike many scoundrels in film and literature (most famously, Han Solo), he never really grows out of it. Image Link - your own designs or other source.
