Lesson 7: Subjects in Unusual Order
In most declarative sentences, the subject comes before theverb. In some
sentences, subjects can come between verb parts, follow verbs, or not appear at
all.
Questions (Interrogative):In most questions, the subject
comes after the verb OR between parts of the verb phrase.
Did the ending surprise you? To find the subject, turn the question
into a statement. Then ask who or
what is or does something.
The ending did surprise you.

Inverted Sentences: the subject comes after the verb. The order
of subject/verb is reversed.
Normal: A scratching sound came from the other side of the door.
Inverted: From the other side of the door came a scratching sound.
Normal: A large black cat rushed into the room
Inverted: Into the room rushed a large black cat.
