T
here was high drama Saturday
midnight in Kanye as a combined
operation of Botswana Police and
Directorate of Intelligence Service (DIS)
swiftly foiled a planned break-in on the
Barclays Bank, Kanye Branch.
The station Commander of Kanye
Police Superintendent, Bakae Bolebantswe
confirmed to Global Post in a telephone
interview that seven (7) suspects linked to
the attempted break in at the bank have been
arrested. “From what we know there was
an attempt to break-in into Barclays Bank
over the roof-top but that was intercepted
by the police and other Security agents,”
Bolebantswe said. Late night crawlers in the
village seeking to replenish their resources
were shocked to find the Barclays Bank
condoned off by heavily armed and bullet
proof clad police and intelligence agents at
around midnight.
Superintendent Bolebantswe has
revealed that six (6) of the apprehended
culprits are suspected to be South African
nationals. The only Motswana arraigned
is a security guard at the Bank. Among the
six suspected South African nationals are
two (2) women. The police and the security
agents acted on a tip-off to intercept and
foil the break-in. The suspects have all been
remanded in police custody and have since
appeared before the Kanye Magistrate for
a mention.
Bolebantswe said the police are still
establishing the possibility of charging the
South African suspects with illegal entry
into Botswana alongside an attempt to
break into the bank with intentions to rob.
The Station Commander has also revealed
that the suspects were not armed but used
objects which he declined to name to open
the roof-top. The security agents moved in
on them once they were inside to effect the
arrest.

from Water Utilities Corporation (WUC)
has confirmed that there is an emergency
maintenance on its pipeline. The pipeline
transports water from Letsibogo Dam to
the south east of the country and supplies
Palapye, Mahalapye, Gaborone and the
great area as well as Lobatse.
“The closure will last at least two (2)
weeks, during this period water supply
to Gaborone and surrounding villages
including Mochudi, Mogoditshane and
Lobatse might experience water shortage,
reads the statement.
In an interview, WUC Spokesperson
Matida Mmipi said Gaborone gets its
water supply from different sources which
complement the supply from Gaborone
Dam.
