Put your UX to the Test: How eye tracking informs design
Does your UX stand up to the test? Get it in users hands early and find out! Great UX design means users want to use your product and easily understand how to use it. Learn strategies on how to incorporate usability testing into your design process so you can ensure a successful design. How successful is your product design? Users are the judges!

What is better…to make a well-designed program or to make it the way my users like it?to maintain a (supposedly) well designed program with all the best practices and usability standards in place, or to make it the way they like it? Is the first-impression so important, that the emotion it causes in the user, makes it easier for him? In other wordsWhat is better, to make a usability-centered interface or a user-centric interface?
A usability-centered interface is NOT the same as a user-centered interface. So, where a usability-centered interface allow users to perform activities and tasks in the most efficient way, a user-centered interface is designed around the user. This includes user experience and visual design that is specific to the target demographic and the behaviors and desires of the user. This taps into the emotions of the user(Don Norman)User-centered design means working with your users throughout the project.
So how do we answer this?
….Why choose?User-centered design means working with your users throughout the project.
Why not have a usability AND user-centered interface?Great product design encompasses both… ease of use and a great first impression that makes an emotional connection with the user.User-centered design means working with your users throughout the project.
Cindy Chastain,Creative Director at R/GA breaks this down for us into a formulaUsability-centered (or the tangible component of UX) is made up of Function, performance and ease-of-useAdd that to user centered (or the intangible component of UX) which is made up of Beauty, emotion, and meaningAnd with both of these, you get…. Optimal user experienceUser-centered design means working with your users throughout the project.
Design for the userUltimate success is achieved when users are truly engaged and can easily do what they want to do.

How does eye-tracking fit into this process?User-centered design means working with your users throughout the project.
This is a heatmap. It shows how long the user gazes at a certain area. Red shows a longer gaze.We see here a strong gaze focus on the Sign in area and the Search box and a little where users were browsing topics.Heat maps are great but they’re slightly limited compared to what you can see with eye-tracking.
With eye-tracking you see the gaze, which is represented by the red circle… this gets larger the longer the user gazes at the spot. The red lines indicate the direction of the gaze. Since this is captured over time while users are performing actions this is information that shows the context in which it happened. So, while a task is being performed, you can see exactly where they looked.User-centered design means working with your users throughout the project.
Remote – testers use their webcamThere are remote eye-tracking tools out there that offer a very low cost test, typically based per user. Here they use people from all over the country to perform user testing through their webcam.
In-person at a research labHere the user is tested in-person in a lab or other setting, one-on-one with a proctor. Cost is higher than remote testing but you have more flexibility in the tasks you ask them to perform. The proctor has the ability to get more information if there are areas in the test that need reinforcement. Or if they want to get more insight into why a certain action was made.
Here is an example of eye tracking with Tobii Technology at their lab for a redesign project of AccessScience for McGraw HillThe lines indicate the direction of the gaze.User-centered design means working with your users throughout the project.
