SAMPLE LESSON PLAN
Content of Student : Grade 7- 8
Information Literacy Skills : Location and access
Library Skills/topic : The Dewey Decimal Classification System
I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:
1. Demonstrate adequate understanding of the concepts and principles of Dewey
Decimal Classification System;
2. Realize the importance of developing basic information-seeking skills using the
Dewey decimal classification System; and,
3. Perform effective and efficient strategies in the access and retrieval of information.
II. Learning Experience
A. Priming
The teacher will show an animated slide presentation wherein the books will move
from right shelve to left shelve. The right shelf contains six (6) books of various subjects,
while the left shelf will contain labels as follows: 000-099 (Generalities), 100-199
(Philosophy and Psychology), 200-299 (Religion), 300-399 (Social Sciences), 400-499
(Languages), and 500-599 (Natural Science). After the presentation the teacher will post
the following questions for the student to answer:
1. How the books arranged in shelve?
2. Why do you think books are arranged in such way?
3. What do you think the lesson is all about?
B. Input
1. Ask the students if they ever wondered how books in a library are arranged?
2. Relate their answers to the following;
2.1 Arrangement of books in the shelves (refers also to your priming video, point out
the left to right, top to bottom arrangement of the books and the labels).
2.2 Purpose of a Classification System in a Library
 to provide basis for organizing books and materials so that they can be
found quickly and easily by the library users
 to bring together books on the same subject for easy shelving.
3. Introduce the Dewey Decimal Classification System as one of the classification
systems used in libraries.
3.1 Classification scheme which divides human knowledge into ten main classes with
further decimal division using a notation of numbers.
3.2 Invented and devised by Melvil Dewey, a librarian, in 1876.
4. Discuss the ten divisions of subject classification in the DDC and their corresponding
classification.
4.1 DEWEY because it's Dewey's idea, DECIMAL because of the decimal point and
division into ten groups, SYSTEM because it is a certain way, order or plan,
CLASSIFICATION because the books are arranged in classes.
5. Show actual books sample from each class and explain why they should belong in
that class number; teacher’s explanation will be aided by a power point presentation.
C. Drill
IL Quiz Bee!
 The class will be divided into five (5) groups. Each group will play as a team;
they need to consult each other before giving in their group answer.
 The teacher will flash in five (5) – ten (10) pictures of book cover; the student
will be given 5 seconds to give in their group answer.
 Group answer will be written in a piece of paper provided by the teacher and the
student will raise it up facing the teacher.
 Every slide flashed by the teacher must be timed (5sec) in order for both the
teacher and student to be aware of the time pressure.
III. Values Integration
 Ask students what is the importance of knowing how books are arranged in the
shelves.
IV. Evaluation
A. Pen/Paper with library trip/exploration.
 The teacher will provide an activity sheet wherein five (5) titles of books are written.
In order to insure that each student will work independently, there is no duplication
of title in the activity sheet. There is also an assurance that the titles are within the
holdings of the library.
 The student will have a short trip to the library and look for the class number of the
books written in their activity sheet.
 The allotted time for this evaluation activity will be at least 10-15mins.
V. Feedback /Anecdote /Recommendation/Teachers Comment:
A. Feedback
 The librarian will prepare a feedback sheet stating the individual performance of
the students per class. The feedback will merely focuses on the IL skills. Also,
the librarian may include individual classroom performance on how the students
participated in the classroom discussion and in the drill.
B. Recommendation
 The Librarian must give recommendation to teachers on the following areas:
Who among the students can and cannot;
1. gather information independently,
 Recommendation to have a frequent individual tasking in every
lesson.
2. ask question
 Encourage the students to ask question during class discussion.
3. access and retrieval of information sources using the DDC.
 Ask the students to use the library materials as references on
their daily assignments.
LESSON PLAN SAMPLE
1. What do I want my student to take
away from my IL session?
At the end of my lesson, I wanted my student to be an
independent library user:
• Wherein, they can easily locate the needed materials in the
library.
• Knowledgeable where and what class the information/subject
matters belong.
• Can work independently in the library and value the importance
of being patience, organize, and strategize.
• In the long run, I want them to integrate those important values
in their daily life tasks.
2. How will I teach my student this IL
skills and library topic?
1. Utilize the method of socialize discussion and library
trip/exploration.
2. Synchronize the subject of discussions from the priming until
the evaluation part.
3. Utilize the technology by preparing a power point presentation
wherein the content of the lesson will focuses on the following
areas:
a. Arrangement of books in the library
b. The Dewey decimal classification system
 The purpose and importance
 The inventor (Melvil Dewey)
 The ten (10) main divisions and their classification.
4. Use of various quotes or phrases before presentation of each
and every DDC main division for easy understanding.
5. Actual books sample and colorful picture clips will be utilize to
make the discussion more interesting.
6. Recapitulate the given lesson every now and then.
7. Frequently monitor the students understanding by asking
related questions or ask them if they have a question.
8. At the end of the presentation and before giving the drill,
summarize the lesson.
3. What will tell me that my student has
learned the IL skills and topic?
1. If the students can perform well in the drill that I prepared.
2. If my students can answer accurately the five (5) item in their
activity sheet within the allotted time.
3. In the long run, if I can see my students in the library and
searching for the needed books on their own.
