El documento describe el movimiento artístico del Pop Art, que surgió de forma independiente en Gran Bretaña y Estados Unidos en la década de 1950. Tomaba como inspiración la cultura de masas y los objetos cotidianos. Artistas populares como Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein y Claes Oldenburg reproducían imágenes de la vida cotidiana como cómics, anuncios publicitarios y latas de sopa Campbell en sus obras.

7. Jasper Johns wanted us to look at their details and see them in a new way, as art! So, he made paintings of them.

8. Jasper did the same with other objects, such as maps and flags.

10. Jasper said that we see flags, maps, and numbers and letters all the time, but we never really think about them. He decided he was going to use them in his paintings so that people could enjoy their shapes.

11. That’s just what he did. Everyday objects, especially things that are flat, like numbers and flags, became his subjects .

33. Gr. 5 Grade 5 “ In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” In 1957, Warhol had plastic surgery to change the shape of his nose. He also lost most of his hair by the time he was 25. He wore wigs for the rest of his life.

34. Gr. 5 Andy began his career as a commercial artist . His drawings appeared in many fashion magazines. Warhol made a lot of money. But he still dressed in torn, sloppy clothes. His friends called him, “Raggedy Andy.”

35. Gr. 5 Grade 5 Many commercial artists admired Warhol’s work. But, many in the fine arts did not consider him to be a real artist. This upset Warhol. He wanted people to think of him as a real artist and not just a magazine illustrator. So, Warhol began painting ordinary objects and display them in museums. Here he painted a character from an old cartoon.

37. Gr. 5 Grade 5 Later that year, a friend suggested Warhol paint something that was so common, people didn’t see it as art. Warhol loved to eat soup. So he decided to paint cans of Campbell’s Soup. There were many flavors of Campbell’s Soup at that time. Warhol bought all the different kinds. Then he spent hours copying the cans on a white background. He painted the cans 32 times on one canvas! Each can was slightly different from the next.

He didn’t hold with the old idea that each work of art should be one of a kind, individually crafted by the artist. He even named his studio “The Factory,” to encourage people to compare his art to manufacturing.

39. Gr. 5 Grade 5 Warhol was fascinated by famous faces and carefully created a celebrity image of his own, wearing a wild white wig to make sure he stood out from other people.
