CHAPTER 6

he beauty of universal design is its ability to accommodate all

people through all of life's stages and changes. If you're in the early

planning stages of building or renovating a bath, incorporating

universal design is a wise investment.

No matter what circumstances arise-a family member becoming permanently

or temporarily disabled, a young child or a shorter-than-average adult needing

assistance, or a friend with a disability dropping by for a visit-you won't need to

make significant changes to a universally built bath. Free of obstacles, your

bathroom becomes usable by all. And if you're planning to live in your home for

many years, universal design features will eventually accommodate your own

changing needs. Successful implementation of this approach features virtually

invisible results in an attractive, functional bathroom.

This bathroom anticipates the needs of the owners should an older parent
with reduced strength or stamina come to live with them or should the homeowners
need assistance in their own later years. Structural reinforcing that accommodates
grab bars is built into the walls.

With patticular attention to placement, shape,
and size, universal design features go practically
undetected. For instance, if you put light
switches and electrical outlets at heights
accessible to your young daughter, most users
will not notice the subtle change.
In the same vein, the shape of something as
simple as a doorknob affects how easily a person
enters and leaves a room but doesn't necessarily
draw undue attention. Comparably priced
lever-style door handles are easier to grasp than
knobs and are available in a range of styles and
finishes. Anyone experiencing arthritis
appreciates the easy-on-the-wrist action.
If implemented as part of the original plan,
universal design increases building expenses
by no more than 2 to 3 percent. All the materials
shown are stock. above Doors with lever handles and a width of at least 3 feet make

Incorporating universal design features into your
new bathroom ensures a safe environment for
you and your family. Being able to negotiate the
entrance to a bathroom and close the door is the
first major concern. Here are some guidelines:
III The bathroom door must be wide enough
The seven basic principles of universal design:

finger manipulation is vital. Simple and intuitive use: Making the design easy to

Lighting
Adequate lighting in any bathroom is important, and it's
essential when applying the principles of universal design.
Following are guidelines for successful installation.
The bath's lighting scheme needs to include a mix of
ambient lighting for overall room illumination, task
lighting for concentrated illumination, and accent
lighting for displayed art. Other guidelines ensure safety
and convenience:
III Mount light switches 44 to 48 inches above the floor. III Install glowing light switches; you can see them in the
III To reduce bending, place electrical outlets 18 to dark of night.
24 inches above the floor (and away from any II Reduce glare with shades, blinds, other window
water sources). treatments, textured wallpaper, or flat wall paint.
Light switches that move up and down are easier to turn II Consider installing a bathroom phone that provides
on and off. both light and sound signals on an accessible wall.

The flooring in a bathroom must be safe to walk on, easy to
maintain, and resistant to damage from water and other

Bathroom floor surfaces should not impede movement

                                            are warm and traditional. The

      Vary cabinet storage heights

III For a linen closet, consider
      a pocket door with
easy-to-grasp hardware. Use framed paintings, drawings,

III Consider loop handles on or posters to add variety and color to the
cabinet doors and drawers. bathroom walls.

  • 3. CHAPTER 6 he beauty of universal design is its ability to accommodate all people through all of life's stages and changes. If you're in the early planning stages of building or renovating a bath, incorporating universal design is a wise investment. No matter what circumstances arise-a family member becoming permanently or temporarily disabled, a young child or a shorter-than-average adult needing assistance, or a friend with a disability dropping by for a visit-you won't need to make significant changes to a universally built bath. Free of obstacles, your bathroom becomes usable by all. And if you're planning to live in your home for many years, universal design features will eventually accommodate your own changing needs. Successful implementation of this approach features virtually invisible results in an attractive, functional bathroom. • 4. '" I I r "" FIB I With patticular attention to placement, shape, and size, universal design features go practically undetected. For instance, if you put light switches and electrical outlets at heights accessible to your young daughter, most users will not notice the subtle change. In the same vein, the shape of something as simple as a doorknob affects how easily a person enters and leaves a room but doesn't necessarily draw undue attention. Comparably priced lever-style door handles are easier to grasp than knobs and are available in a range of styles and finishes. Anyone experiencing arthritis appreciates the easy-on-the-wrist action. If implemented as part of the original plan, universal design increases building expenses by no more than 2 to 3 percent. All the materials shown are stock. above Doors with lever handles and a width of at least 3 feet make Universal design is not only accessible it easy for virtually anyone to enter and leave the bathroom. and adaptable, it is affordable and attractive. Incorporating universal design features into your new bathroom ensures a safe environment for you and your family. Here are some guidelines: III The bathroom door must be wide enough The seven basic principles of universal design: for a walker or wheelchair to move through (32 to 36 inches or more). Tub and Shower Requirements III Grab bars are a safety feature in and around the shower arld bathtub, making transferring into and out of the tub/shower easier for someone with reduced mobility or strength. III Bathtub lifts, which lift a person safely into the tub, are available through catalogs, the Intemet, and medical supply stores. III A well-designed bathing space allows standing, sitting, or reclining. An ample shower is typically 36x60 inches. To allow for maneuvering in and out of the shower or tub, maintain an open space of at least 18 inches on either side. III Include a 30-inch-wide aisle along the side of the tub. A wall-mounted sink may be included in this area, but a toilet is not advisable. III For a shower, allow a 30x48-inch floor space in front for maneuvering. III Apply antislip rubber pieces to the shower or tub floor. III For a no-hassle entry, buy or install a shower with a curb less roll-in or no-step entrance. Install a fold-down or fixed seat/bench in the tub/shower. II Install easy-to-tum (without gripping) tub and shower Access to this bathroom fits minimum standards for controls. To prevent buming and to regulate pressure and temperature, attach antiscald devices to all water valves. Bathroom Design and Planning 157
  • 6. Easy-Access Vanity Sink and Fixture Requirements Without proper access to sinks, showers, and toilets, daily grooming tasks become difficult. Following are guidelines that will make sinks and fixtures easy to reach and to use. II Allow a clearance space of 30x48 inches in front of all fixtures. II It is advisable to install antiscald devices on all water valves. These important devices prevent burning by turning off the water if the temperature gets too hot. II Mount the sink with the edge no higher than 34 inches. Or install dual-height sinks, one for seated users (32 inches) and one for standing use (36 inches). II Make sure at least one sink provides clear knee space that measures at least 27 inches high, 30 inches wide, and 19 inches deep. This is also comparative to a vanity-type style of sink. A wall-mounted or pedestal sink is another option. II Purchase shallow sink basins with overflow at the back to suit those who prefer to sit while using them or to allow children to use a step stool easily. II Installievers/handies that are easy to grasp with a closed fist. ~ --- II Insulate the bottom of the sink and the water pipes above This bathroom contains several invisible elements that to prevent users from getting bums and/or cuts. meet the requirements of universal design, including easy II Consider a childproof medicine chest with interior access under the vanity sink. Toilet Clearances When installing a toilet consider these guidelines. ill Allow at least 3x5 feet for approach space. ill Raise toilet height to 17 or 18 inches to prevent unnecessary stress on legs, knees, and back. ill Electronically adjustable seats that raise and lower also are available. ill Install grab bars behind and to the sides of the toilet A grab bar is a secure rod used to help lift, steady, to assist in standing. balance, or prevent falls. The bars come in a variety of colors and finishes to complement your bathroom motif, although grab bars in contrasting colors enhance visibility. There are three different types of grab bars: Wall-mounted bars are the most stable. You attach them to the wall at both ends and position them vertically or horizontally. Make sure the bar is mounted securely into wall studs or blocking in the walls. ill Pivoting grab bars move out of the way when not in use but are close enough to provide support when needed. • 8. Lighting Adequate lighting in any bathroom is important, and it's essential when applying the principles of universal design. Following are guidelines for successful installation. The bath's lighting scheme needs to include a mix of ambient lighting for overall room illumination, task lighting for concentrated illumination, and accent lighting for displayed art. Other guidelines ensure safety and convenience: III Mount light switches 44 to 48 inches above the floor. III Install glowing light switches; you can see them in the III To reduce bending, place electrical outlets 18 to dark of night. 24 inches above the floor (and away from any II Reduce glare with shades, blinds, other window water sources). treatments, textured wallpaper, or flat wall paint. Light switches that move up and down are easier to turn II Consider installing a bathroom phone that provides on and off. both light and sound signals on an accessible wall. Flooring The flooring in a bathroom must be safe to walk on, easy to maintain, and resistant to damage from water and other spills. Installing nonskid materials or rubber safety strips in the bathing/shower area is highly recommended. Bathroom floor surfaces should not impede movement of wheels but should not be slippery either. Users are less likely to slip on matte ceramic tiles. Some people prefer a more resilient surface, such as carpet. The best carpet for a bathroom is made of antimicrobial nylon. In areas that may be potentially slippery or wet, apply antislip rubber decals. Stone tiles work well in bathrooms because they don't become slippery when wet. If properly sealed, they will last indefinitely. 160 Bathroom Design and Planning
