community by enhancing the knowledge of school nurses about managing common childhood illnesses and injuries
and providing updated information about changes in care for children with chronic diseases.
Course objectives
By attending this conference, you should be able to:
1) Explain the treatment of simple and complex medical/traumatic events using minimal equipment/resources.
2) Identify common internalized and externalized symptoms that are part of mental disorders in children and adolescents.
3) Give examples of best practices for collaborating with Department of Children’s Services (DCS) regarding at-risk
children.
4) Describe how to manage seizures in the school setting using an increased understanding of the seizure process.
5) Discuss the role of the school nurse in the scope of human trafficking.
6) Recognize school nurses can contribute to a child’s academic progress by treating his/her physical condition.
7) Value the positive student impact provided by the presence and continuity of the school nurse.
This activity will provide 6.25 contact hours.

Chief Keith Sartin, E.M.T.-P.
Sartin has worked in emergency medicine for 28 years.
He has been a paramedic with Rural/Metro Corporation
since 1994. He is a certified emergency medical dispatcher
for the Loudon County 911 Dispatch Center, chief of the
Blount County Rescue Squad, chaplain for the Tennessee
Association of Rescue Squads (TARS) and teaches instructor
certifications in emergency medical responder to CPR and
TARS courses.
Jan Neece, Ph.D.
Dr. Neece received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology
from Texas A&M University. She has directed the Pediatric
Psychology Department at Children’s Hospital since 2013.
With more than 20 years experience, she enjoys serving
pediatric patients and their families as they work toward
mental health and wholeness.
Sandra Hardin, B.S.N., R.N.
Hardin graduated from Carson-Newman University with her
bachelor’s degree in nursing. She is a public health nurse
consultant and child safety nurse for the State of Tennessee
DCS. Hardin has served the State of Tennessee for nine years.
Tiffany Goodpasture, M.S., L.P.C.-M.H.S.P.
Goodpasture graduated from Johnson University with a
master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy/Professional
Counseling. She has been a safety analyst/program
manager for the State of Tennessee DCS since 2012. Her
past experience includes managing programs treating
adolescents and young women.
Chris Miller, M.D.
Dr. Miller graduated from the University of Connecticut
School of Medicine and completed residency training
in pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center and in
neurology at the University of Colorado Health Science
Center. He followed this with fellowship training in EEG/
Clinical Neurophysiology at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Miller is the senior neurologist at Child Neurology Services,
P.C., and the medical director of the Neurology Lab at
Children’s Hospital.
Jamesena Walker, B.S.
Walker received her bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice
from Middle Tennessee State University. She has been a
special agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for
17 years. Walker is currently assigned to investigate matters
involving sex trafficking within the state of Tennessee,
particularly the upper east area.
Jessica Turnbill, B.S.N., R.N.
Turnbill has been a school nurse with Knox County Schools
for three years. Her previous nursing experience was in
the hospital setting. Turnbill enjoys being a school nurse
because of the continuation of care that can impact a
student’s learning.
Dan Kopp, M.D.
Dr. Kopp is a graduate of the United States Military Academy
at West Point and served as an Army officer for 28 years. He
has more than 35 years of clinical experience and 27 years
of physician leadership. His fundamental belief about nurses
today is that the vast majority of them still have an internal
flame fueled by the passion that brought them into health
care originally.
