ARE YOU FEELING LIKE AN
IN-EE OR AN OUT-EE?
by Pastor Mike
This is not a question about belly buttons but a reference to
that ongoing feeling that “you-are-an-insider-and-I’m-an-
outsider!” We all know in-ees enjoy relationship utopia. In-
ees have close friends - lots of them. In-ees matter to others
deeply and frequently. In-ees are included and have more
fun. Out-ees on the other hand are forgotten. Out-ees are
neglected and never feel they quite fit in. Out-ees are
lonely. Out-ees want to be in-ees but cannot seem to ever
overcome the in-ee out-ee barrier. This barrier shows up
with extended family, at school, at work, and anyplace
where relationships exist. Where do you feel like an in-ee?
Where do you feel like an out-ee? I know from experience
that feeling like an out-ee STINKS!
This perceived obstacle to intimacy exists in church life. It
exists at EFC. And in my years pastoring EFC I have
discovered that every person at EFC has recently struggled
with or is currenlty struggling with out-ee feelings. Ironically,
the in-ees feel like out-ees and the out-ees are thought to be
in-ees! (Confusing isn’t it?) Does the in-ee and out-ee barrier
mean there is a problem with EFC? It is actually a sign of
health. Let me explain.
The fundamental emotional need that every person has is
intimacy. Everything we do is a drive to fulfill this sense of
closeness. We long to live in deep, personal, and
transparent relationships with one another. We want to
openly reveal who we are to another and for the other to
recipricate and essentially say, “I love and care about who
you are and value who you truly are!” But we fear that if
we do this we will hear, “Now that I know you I will not
love you. You have little worth to me.” Fear of rejection
drives us into isolation and propogates the in-ee out-ee
barrier. This condition was first introduced in the Garden of
Eden. Perfect, naked fellowship between Creator and His
creation was broken through sin. Intimacy was gone. God’s
work since then and His sending Jesus was to repair this
broken intimacy with our Father by removing the cracked
and distorted lens that says, “With God I’m an out-ee and
can’t be an in-ee!” I would sum up the discipleship
experience as one of learning to have a healthy (aka
“intimate”) relationship with our heavenly Father by learning
to have healthy (intimate) relationships with others.
My brothers and sisters at Everett Family Church: We all feel
like out-ees. Others think we are the in-ees. They all want to
be an in-ee with us. And no one wants to talk about it! If you
are feeling like an out-ee everyone is thinking you are the in-
ee. They are actually the ones who are right because, in
Christ, we are all in-ees and no one need be an out-ee! Now
are you ready to re-discover your special place IN EFC?

Experiencing God in a
Kid-Sized Way!
We are studying the life of David as a church. Our
Family Gatherings are focused on helping the children
experience God in a kid-sized way. We have a music set
to help them worship, a Bible teaching skit followed by a
concise sermon from Pastor Mike after which he leads a
special breakout time for the kids. The Community
Pastors lead a time for the adults during the elementary
and youth breakouts. The evening
will conclude with a simple meal
and fellowship.
Invite a friend or family who desire
to grow kids in their relationship
with Jesus!!

Family Gathering Makeover: We returned with fresh
energy to leading our children to Jesus through
our Family Gatherings. Our summer song set was
released, the teaching skits returned and Pastor
Mike joined the elementary team to lead the
breakouts. A simple “EFC Dinner Pot” has taken
the stress out of feeding our children after church
and made for some extended time of fellowship.
Youth Gospel Journey: The youth began a series - a
hike really! - through the Gospel message. There
were quite a few youth who attended with their
friends for this video series with Greg, Zane, and
crew.
Praxis Youth Pastor: The Management Team decided
to bring Perry Travis into the role as the Praxis
Youth Pastor. He will have responsibility for
leading the youth leadership team on Tuesday
nights with the task of discipling our middle and
high schoolers in their walk with Christ. He is a
gifted and passionate pastor of youth with a very
vested interest - three of the youth boys are his
own! We are blessed to use the resources God
has given to us to do the ministry He has called
us to.
Father Son Retreat: This year we had three dads and
sons attend the retreat hosted at Lakeside Bible
Camp. BB guns, archery, model rockets, and a
mother’s day gift (that mom will forever
treasure!) filled the schedule. There is no greater
privilege and joy than raising our sons to know
and love God through our intentional relationship
with them!
Community Groups in May: The Ripleys and Bells
facilitated a time for the adults each Family
Gathering following the family worship time in
May. May 24th Community Groups met.
