Sherwin Williams open space for Emeryville offers a number of positive amenities for the neighboring
community and City wide including;
· connections with existing and new pedestrian and bike trails to other parts of the City

· new recreational and garden experiences
· informal and formalized gathering opportunities
Facilities and vocabulary will be an interpreted expression of the unique aspects of the City’s industrial

DISTRICT 1: WAREHOUSE DISTRICT
Open Space:
The open space in this block is composed
of several distinct spaces with different
character, activities and materials. Materials
will reference the architecture themes of
industrial.
The Alley Space between the two residential/
mixed use buildings is pedestrian use only
and is shared between the existing Sherwin
Williams Building and new building. Emphasis
will be on contrasts in paving materials and
interesting plantings encouraging lingering
and respite. Large trees in raised planters
will bring definition to the overall space and
foster seating alcoves and breakout spaces
for small group activities for the residents
and neighbors.
A Pass-Through Space is created by a portal
through the existing Sherwin Williams
Building – making a visual and physical
connection to the park. This connects bike
circulation to the Greenway Extension.
The Horton Art Gallery Space – substantial
frontage on Horton the courtyard is an
extension of the galley in an outdoor garden
setting. The landscape will be substantially
hardscape with modern forms, materials and
furniture. Plantings will be used as garden
architecture.

DISTRICT 2: PARK DISTRICT
Open Space:
This largest area of open space – Sherwin
Avenue Park - is suitable for various activities
and has approximately 50% streetscape
frontage – making easy accessibility to the
neighborhood. The heart of the development
it offers a convenient connection and
continuation of the Greenway Extension.
The character and materials of the space are
intentionally simple, durable, and open to
encourage programming and impromptu use.
A street tree pattern will continue through
the frontage. Trees at the perimeter will
create skyline and urban green. Potential
uses of the open space include:
• ‘Big Green’ without definition to be
programmable.
• Performance space.
• ‘Big Forest’ edges allowing varied passive
uses under the trees.
• Group bar-be-que and picnic facility.
• Kids creative play area
• Family, kids, and dog friendly.
• Functional and aesthetically interesting
graphics and lighting.
• Access to public restrooms.

DISTRICT 3: RAIL DISTRICT
Open Space:
This Linear Park space provides the buffer
for the overall project and the adjacent rail
lines. It also incorporates the extension
of the Emeryville Greenway connecting
Halleck Street to the future Horton Landing
Park and beyond. This area is intended to
accommodate travel through the site with
areas to stop and enjoy the open space. The
landscape character will be naturalistic with
mounding, native and native-like plants,
upgrading of the perimeter boundary,
and a synergy with the proposed adjacent
City Park. Potential uses of the open space
include:
• Emeryville Greenway multi-use trail
extension
• History interpretive vocabulary
• Native plant demonstration
• Train viewing opportunities
• Sitting opportunities
• Wayfinding graphics
• Play activities for kids
• Building murals

component through the site to accommodate

from the adjacent buildings. The paving, tree
locations and street furniture will advance

use between cars, bikes, and pedestrians
– enforced with traffic calming devices.

themes of industrial. Potential uses of the
open space may include:
• Vehicular traffic
• “On-street” parking
• Pedestrian and bicycle circulation
