Seeks to improve traffic safety and provide transportation options to people around the County
Bicycle Network Plan: Establishes key bike route network and suggests type of bicycle facility
Safer/more comfortable facility type can be implemented if space allows
Routes can be added to connect destinations/origins to the bike network
Implementation Options (if not widening road):
Capital Projects ($$$)
Through Paving & Restriping Process ($)
17. ROAD REDESIGN –
IMPROVING ROAD SAFETY FOR PEOPLE DRIVING, WALKING & BIKING
Only implemented on roads with low to medium traffic
volumes (current and projected) and excess capacity.

Proposed Bikeshare Station
Pictured: Shiplett Blvd in Burke
Pictured: Breaburn Drive in Braddock District
36. SOUTH LAKES DRIVE (RESTON PKWY TO SUNRISE
VALLEY DR)
CONCERNS:
Speeding (85th percentile speed: 47.4 mph)
Crashes (30 reported crashes between 01/01/08 and 12/31/10: 63% left turn onto South
Lakes Drive, 17% rear-end collisions)
School traffic related congestion and safety concerns between Soapstone Drive
(eastbound) and Salt Kettle Way (westbound)
No bicycle facilities (Reston Association trail alternative is not bikeable in many places due
to missing ramps, staircases, concerns about crime, lack of lighting, etc)
Major reconstruction needed to implement bike lanes while maintaining 4 travel lanes
(narrow/remove median)
37. SOUTH LAKES DRIVE (RESTON PKWY TO SUNRISE
VALLEY DR)
PROPOSED SOLUTION:
Road redesign: 2 travel lanes and buffered bike lanes where
feasible, left and right turn lanes
All travel lanes maintained approaching signalized
intersections
Moderate traffic volumes: within adequate range for a road
redesign, but spot congestion need further investigation
Pictured: Shiplett Blvd in Burke
38. SOUTH LAKES DRIVE (RESTON PKWY TO SUNRISE
VALLEY DR)
BENEFITS:
Key east-west bicycle route (connecting USGS, South Gate & Reston Community Centers, South Lakes High School, South
Lakes Shopping Center, medium density housing along the entire corridor, planned bikeshare stations + key route to Wiehle
Reston Town Center Metro Stations, W&OD)
Increased safety for turning vehicles (slower speed, improved sight distance, safer right turn areas)
Increased safety and comfort for pedestrians (including accompanied and unaccompanied youth): added buffer, safer
crossings
Possibility to upgrade to protected bike lanes in the near future
40. COMMUNITY FEEDBACK NEEDED
