4. BENEFITS OF DIABETIC SOCKS
• Reduce Irritation
– Reducing foot irritation is key, and this is where the seamless design of diabetic
socks really comes into play.
– Traditional socks generally have seams, which can rub against your foot. Over
time this friction can cause blisters and other sores.
– The seamless design of a diabetic sock greatly reduces friction, and therefore
the risk of blister and sores forming in the first place.

5. BENEFITS OF DIABETIC SOCKS
• Reduce Pressure
– Much like benefits associated with a seamless sock, the use of wrinkle-proof
material is also very important.
– Socks that are prone to wrinkle tend to bunch up in certain areas and put
pressure on your feet, much like the traditional seam.
– By harnessing wrinkle-proof material the chance of unwanted friction is reduced
even further.

6. BENEFITS OF DIABETIC SOCKS
• Promote Healthy Circulation
– The introduction of a non-binding top has been a key introduction to the
diabetes sock.
– Traditionally binding tops are used to hold the sock in place, either through
tighter stitching or elastic.
– While this is perfectly acceptable in theory, in practice this hampers
circulation, even for those people with normally good circulation.
– For diabetes sufferers this is already a problem. Arteries can become
blocked, and are typically less flexible as a result of high blood-sugar levels. So
circulation is already reduced.
– However, the non-binding top allows for the best foot circulation possible.

7. BENEFITS OF DIABETIC SOCKS
• Control Moisture
– Moisture in the shoe can cause two problems:
– Greater friction. If your sock becomes sodden then it can cling to your foot. The
chance of friction and rubbing is much greater when your sock starts clinging. And
what does friction cause? Blisters and other sores.
– Breeding ground for bacteria. A warm, moist shoe environment is the ideal breeding
ground for bacteria.
– Socks for diabetes are made from breathable materials (mostly cotton). The benefits
of this are increased breathe-ability, your feet sweat less, and any foot moisture is
drawn away from the skin and can evaporate from the sock.
– Less moisture equals less friction and less bacteria. And this means a
healthier, happier foot!

8. BENEFITS OF DIABETIC SOCKS
• Reduced Chance of Infection
– So far We've spoken about how diabetic socks can improve circulation, reduce friction
and control moisture. But we haven't mentioned why these are such crucial benefits.
– The overwhelming answer is the reduced chance of infection.
– Controlling friction is key as it gets right to the source of the problem. If you control
friction, through seamless, wrinkle-proof material, then you reduce the chances of
blisters and sores happening in the first place.
– Most people look at foot blisters as a mildly painful inconvenience. But not for the
diabetes sufferer...
– What would usually be nothing more than a source of irritation for non-diabetics, could
lead to foot ulcers and very serious complications for somebody with diabetes. This is
because diabetic patients suffer from poor circulation and loss of sensation in their
feet.

9. BENEFITS OF DIABETIC SOCKS
• Reduced Chance of Infection
– Poor circulation hampers the blood's flow around the body, meaning that your natural
healing process is nowhere near as effective. And this increases the chance of sores
getting infected.
– Diabetic socks aim not to reduce foot and leg circulation, and even improve it where
they can through non-binding tops. This allows your body's natural defense and repair
system to work at full-power.
– Moisture control is the final piece of the puzzle for reducing infection.
– As I've already mentioned, a warm moist shoe-environment is the favorite breeding
ground for harmful bacteria. This bacteria will cause sores and blisters to develop into
foot ulcers.
– Breathable materials in your diabetic socks reduce the chance of this ever happening.
Almost 20% of diabetes sufferers will get a foot ulcer at some point in their lives, so
why become one of them?

10. BENEFITS OF DIABETIC SOCKS
• Sores Heal Faster
– Of course it is virtually impossible to avoid some sort of foot irritation for your
entire life, even with the correct footwear!
– However, for the same reasons why diabetes socks reduce the chance of
infection, it also means any sores that do develop will heal much faster.

11. MORE TIPS FOR HEALTHY DIABETIC
FEET
– Wash your feet daily. Make sure you wash your feet at least once every day, preferably
twice. Use tepid water and soft soap to avoid drying out your skin.
– Inspect your feet daily. Always inspect your feet, and socks, for any signs of sores or blisters.
This is very important if you have a loss of sensation in your feet. If your vision is impaired
then you may like to ask for assistance so that you can spot the very first signs of irritation.
– Treat cuts and blisters early. Try to treat your cuts and blisters early. Remember, the sooner
you treat yourself, the lower the chance of infection.
– Report infections to your doctor. If your self-treatment isn't working and a cut or blister
appears to be infected then report it to your doctor immediately. The sooner these infections
are properly treated, the less problematic they will become.
– Groom your toenails carefully. Watch out for sharp edges that can rub against your other
toes. And trimmed toenails harbor fewer bacteria!
– Change your footwear regularly. It is a good idea to change your socks and/ or shoes at least
once per day. Fresh footwear removes your feet from an environment that could potentially
be full of bacteria. You may also like to try some antibacterial shoe spray to really get the
germs running scared!
