Exploring Kerala India- 10 Day Trips from its Capital City, Trivandrum
With a 4500 year old history and culture, it’s not easy to discount what India has to offer to the curious traveler by way
of its natural diversity and assortment of religions, customs, and cuisines. Being the world’s seventh largest country in
area, there is so much to explore within the country that very few Indians alone, are able to travel through the length
and breadth of it in one lifetime. However, travelers who have gone around it to some extent would agree that the
best way to explore India is either region-wise or visiting the top Indian cities that find their way into the ubiquitous
traveler’s guide.
While planning a trip to the southern parts of India, most travelers would definitely include God’s Own Country
(Kerala) on their list. With its temples and beaches, hill stations, backwater tours, national parks, Ayurvedic
massages, and the much favored cuisine from the ‘land of spices’, you need to check your time and budget before
you plan out your ‘bucket list’ of experiences here in Kerala.
In this two (2) part article series, I will take you along as I go Exploring India on my 10 Day Kerela Vacations:

TRIVANDRUM (Thiruvananthapuram)
With a coastline covering approximately 600 kilometers, Kerala is a long strip along the Arabian Sea and Trivandrum
lies to its South, closer to its neighboring Southern state of Tamil Nadu. Most people visiting Kerala would arrive at

Thiruvananthapuram.
Sightseeing In Kerala
Trivandrum is Kerala’s capital and is a city built on seven hills. The climate like the rest of Kerala varies between
sultry summers and exotic monsoons. But with its rolling hills, coastal plains and cool rugged mountains, one can
move from the hot summer plains to the cooler mountains above and then descend again to the wet and humid
climate of the monsoons. Trivandrum is a large district covering many miles of sunny beaches, tranquil backwaters
and hill stations.
To help you explore and absorb the most, here is an exhaustive list of the 10-day trips from Trivandrum.

This sleepy little town woke up to the heavy stream of tourists when it’s marvelous palm lined cosy beaches were
discovered hiding among the coconut groves from which the town gets its name. Only a 45 minute drive from
Trivandrum, Kovalam is known for its white sandy beaches shaped in the form of a natural crescent. The crescent
begins with the Lighthouse Beach that affords a majestic view of the Vizhinjam Mosque, followed by the Hawah
beach in the middle and the Samudra Beach at its northernmost end.
Sunbathing, swimming in the warm sea, water sports, treating your taste buds to the gastronomic delights of the
seaside shacks or just relaxing under the groves with your favorite book, are some of the ways to unwind. The shops
lining the beach offer some interesting accoutrements to collect, before heading back for your hotel after a day well

2. ALLEPEY
A trip to Kerala is never complete without the backwater tour; and Allepey offers the perfect gateway to this
experience. More than one third of this historic town is covered in water from the famous Ashtamudi Lake.
Alappuzha, the original name of this town, is the perfect destination if you are thinking of a traditional houseboat
experience that takes you cruising along the lazy backwaters.
Enjoy the sights and sounds of the Kerala countryside while you are treated to some delectable local cuisine dished
out from the kitchen on board. You may even wish to spend a night in solitude in the stillness of the backwaters,
surrounded by nothing but the chirping of crickets. Allepey is 150 kilometers away from Trivandrum which can be
covered in 4 hours by road or less by rail.
