2. Today, the United States of America and the European Union have quite strong
relationships referring historical, political, economic and social affairs including Canada and
other European Countries out of the European Union as well. Especially for over fifty years
,this transatlantic relationship has been the leading force for a united ,secure and
economically stronger Europe against Soviet Union which can be considered as today’s
Russia. The United States of America and the European Union have a common strategic
vision for Europe’s future security to continue the peace within a United Europe which is the
continent that has experienced the world’s most dramatic wars through the history, and to
sustain the security for free market economies and the democracies.
In today’s world economics and politics are very closely linked with each other and
The European Union and the United States of America share the largest two way trade and
investment relationship in the world. They both try efforts towards a more open world system
of trade and investment. Through G-7, they work to stimulate global growth. They both try to
expand trade and investment opportunities and multiply jobs on both sides of the Atlantic
Ocean. Thus, the economic reasons reagarding why the United States of America should
support a united Europe are quite obvious and understandable.
NATO which stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization is the main function for
security matters between Europe and the United States of America. It functions for both the
security of Europe and a threat for Russia at the same time to surround it. Especially, during
the Cold War which is geopolitical, ideological, and economic struggle, took place after
World War Two between the United States of America and the Soviet Socialist Union States,
the North Atlantic Treaty Organization played a very critical role for the favor of the United
States of America at first and the Europe as well .After the collapse of the Soviet Union in
1991,the Cold War which has started before 50’s has finished and the United States have been
the only hegomonic power in the world. A decrease in the Russian threat has also made a

3. decrease in the importance of NATO for all the parties. However, it is still the most
significant organization for the security in the region of Europe. After the September 11th
terrorist attacks ,the vitality of NATO and the United Europe in the same line gained more
value against terrorism, especailly, for the security of the United States of America as the
leading and on target country.
Although there are strong partnerships between the European Union and the United
States of America, we should well observe some tendencies in some European Union leading
countries like France and Germany. As it is known, formerly the United Kingdom which can
be counted as England and France were the leading forces in the world and the United States
was out of the world matters. Once, today’s hegemonic superpower started expand to deal
with the world matters out of its boundaries and at the same time both the United Kingdom
and France withdrew from the world affairs, power balance has changed. Although , now ,
England is always particapating the United States’ decisions and also its actions, it is very
hard to say that France or Germany are always in the same line with all the decions taken by
the United States of America. This wiev distinction comes from both histiorical rivalvry
feelings and from power also authority conflicts. Also ESDP which stands for European
Security and Defence Policy may reduce the power of NATO which means at the same time
may reduce the power of the United States in the European Continent for security matters. It
creates a disadvantegeous situation for the countries that are in the European region
,members of NATO but not a member of the European Union like Turkey.
A unified Europe will automatically mean a stronger Europe from anyway. And,
although both the United States of America and the European Union are in the same sides in
many ways like politically, historically, culturally,ideologically and economically, as Europe
gets stronger ,Can they be rivals in the future?,or some leading significant countries in
Europe, Can they try to direct the Union’s politics in for their own benefits and in acrooss

4. with the favor of the United States of America?. Does stronger Europe mean, relatively
weaker America?, There are also increasing powers like China and still there is an important
Russia. Does a relatively decrease in the power of the United States in world politics create an
apolarity? And if does, it is obvious that it would be worse for the United States, would it be
good for the rest of the world by building a new balance, or would it create bigger problems
around the world? These are only some question marks without answers while thinking of a
more united and naturally more powerful Europe. Especially, while the European Army,
ESPD which stands for European Security and Defence Policy is being considered and while
some important European countries can be against world politics of the United States of
America as we saw in the Iraq War.
Turkey is a stong key element for a more united and economically, culturally,
politically richer and defensively more secure Europe. Turkey is a member of NATO which
is for security with Europe , Canada and the United States of America since 50’s, and can be
counted as a member of European Union economically since 90’s by custom union
agreements. Alhough Turkey has very close relationships with Europe, it is not a full member
state of European Union. Some political disputes and challenges in both Europe like
conservative wievs and in also Turkey like democracatization breakdowns also external
factors like the end of the Cold War and the end of socialist regimes have decreased the speed
of Turkey-European Union unification process which has started at the end of 50’s ,in fact
historically has started at the ending periods of Ottoman Empire by certain reforms. Turkey is
also an important country for Europe with its young and educated labor force, as a gate for
middle east and former Soviet Union countries and the most importantly on a global scale a
sample for concencus of different civilazitons with its predominantly muslim population.
Turkey is maybe the most important country that should be encouraged to unify for stronger
Europe.

5. Although, the Cold War has ended ,Soviet Union has collapsed, United Europe still
has been the vital element for the security of Europe, European Union, and also for the
United States of America especially for terrorism issues targeting Western Countries led by
the United States of America. Contrubition of some former Soviet Socialist European
countries, in addition, Turkey ,which is still in very critical roles in the region and in the
world politics will be quite benefical for more united Europe. More united and stronger
Europe will help the peace for Europe, peace for the United States of America and peace for
the world. Because, European constutition and values based on democracy,superiority of rule
of law, protection for minorities and respect for human rights within a free market economy
system. This system is in line with the American system for economically and for the security
matters. Political dimensions in the European Union vision is more peacefully and human
respected, and this is a vital example for the world peace. It is a union whose members are
formerly enemies. And this success can provide a perspective for all the world. So, The
United States should continiue to encourage a united Europe.
