Q1
1.
2. Our music video supports various theories of
Andrew Goodwin. It demonstrates a relationship
between the lyrics and visuals and also the
relationship between the music and visuals. Our
storyline was constructed around the lyrics of
the song which explains the relationship
between the artist and a woman/women. We
included our own interpretation of the song and
intertwined it with the theme of the video which
is love, deception, envy, and greed. The
dominancy of the male subject in the video
connotes a message which explains our video
even more in a sense where it explores the
power which he has over the women who
compete for him and also the fact that the lyrics
reflect him trying not to fall in love and instead
warning the females.
3. Our music video shows a representation of two women who are competing for the same
man; we chose this storyline as it could have been interpreted in a way which related to the
lyrics of the song. Some may argue that it could be a stereotypical storyline as it shows the
females using their sex appeal in order to gain attention from the male subject in the video.
Music videos have relied heavily on the advertisement of women who use sex to perpetuate
an image where their body can sell and advertise the product. The stories of music videos are
told through the females actions and therefore have become a vital and major tool in music
videos. It’s almost as though women are propagated as a possession to artists and also
companies within the music industry. The presence of women in music videos is used to gain
the attention of viewers and promote the music and the artist. Music videos not only tell the
story of what a woman is viewed to be but also the image of men being powerful, forceful and
also intimidating within their masculinity. Some may say that these perceptions of men have
been glamorised and accepted within the culture of music, in result it may allow men in society
to withhold an idea where they feel as though they have the entitlement to treat women in any
way they feel is acceptable due to these glamorised images of men.
‘’Music is well known for being a powerful advertising force. There are tons of studies showing
that young people who listen to music or watch music videos with sexual messages are more
likely to be involved in sexual acts from a younger age.’’
Although some may argue that the advertisement and objectification of women contributes
to what society expect to become the norms within society, others will argue that music videos
aren’t responsible for the actions which are carried out by men, women and children as
movies, video games and following forms of entertainment are influential.
We included shots of mervedy dancing in order to seduce the male and also the fact that
she’s wearing a figure hugging dress emphasises the theme of sex and things associated with
it.
4. Our product consists of a mixture of
narrative and performance shots. The
narrative doesn't directly tell the story of
what is taking place in the video, however
shows the plot and storyline of the two
women competing for the male artist. We
used a mixture of close ups, long shots
and also combined shots together by using
fading effects. There were points in the
video where we placed shots according to
the beat in the song and also used shots of
different colours in order to add more
colour and in our video which contrasted
with the predominately dark scenes. We
included shots of the singer singing to
accentuate his status and hierarchy in the
narrative and the role in which he's playing
in the music video. In terms of looking for
guidance and example, we looked at
drake’s- take care music video.
5. The star theory by Richard dyer
explores ‘’The idea that icons and
celebs are constructed by
institutions for financial gain and
are built to target a specific
audience or group of people.’’ it
could be said that our artist in the
video could be using vouyism to
target a specific audience e.g.
girls/women and also the beauty
shots/close ups could also be ideal
in the video to sell the image of the
artist and also the music. Therefore
there will be financial gain due to
the construction of the artist in the
video.
6. We used different camera shots and angles which all
combined to help the construction of the music
video. The mains themes of the music video such a
party theme, love, and competition were all taken
into thought when choosing the digital effects, such
as the fading and also the close ups used in the
poker scene where we intended to connote the
challenge and tension in the game.
