Timber is a natural material obtained from
trees. It is an easily renewable resource. It
is aesthetically beautiful with various
colours, tones, grains and can also create
a warm feeling. It is also naturally durable.
• Quickly and easily built.
• Not affected by temperature.
• Bad conductor of heat and electricity so less prone to
condensation.
• Maintenance is easy and cheap.
• Insulating nature maintains the temperature inside the
room
• They have long life if good quality timber is used.
• Addition and alteration can be done easily.
• Available in many sizes, shapes and forms.
• Provide noise and sound insulation.
• It is strong and durable.
• Have a natural attractive appearance.
ADVANTAGES
• The wooden frames are affected by termite and insects.
• Cost of the good quality timber is very high.
• The timber can absorb moisture and easily rot.
• Low resistance to fire.
DISADVANTAGES
4. CONCRETE (FLOOR) (STAIRCASE)
Concrete is a heterogeneous material
consist of cement, sand, aggregate,
water and admixtures. It is the most
widely used building material. Its
products come in many forms and
applications with different types of
composition mix for different needs. It
hardens as it sets.
ADVANTAGES
• It is durable and strong.
• Can be easily decorated.
• Does not stain easily when protection is
applied.
• Easy and low cost maintenance.
• It is versatile and can be molded.
• It is economical.
• Provide good sound insulation.
• It is a non-combustible material and is fire-
resistant.
• Moderate resistance to moisture.
• Quick construction.

DISADVANTAGES
• It has low tensile strength and is brittle.
• It does not have good insulation against
heat and cold.
• Susceptible to cracking and penetration
of moisture.
• Hardness of floor could hurt and cause
damage to falling objects and people.

TITLE OF ASSIGNMENT 1: MY CAMPUS – EXPLORING SPACES & MATERIALS
The floor of LT21 is covered with carpet finishing. It gives a
nice appearance to the space and cushions the sound of
footsteps. It provides a soft surface to soften the fall of
objects and people.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
• It helps to soundproof
and insulate the entire
space.
• It is easily maintained
and cleaned.
• It gives protection to
the concrete floor in
area of heavy traffic.
• It provides overall
comfort to the space
and retain the
temperature of room.
• It can act as an
effective passive air
filter that traps dust
and harmful particles
in the air if cleaned
properly.
• It easily traps dusts and
air pollutants in the
carpet which may cause
sickness.
• It also easily absorb
stains and moisture
which can cause
damage to the carpet.

GLASS ( WINDOW )
It is used for aesthetic purposes to provide a
good decoration effect and gives a nice
appearance. It provides controlled light
transmission and condensation protection. It
also provides insulation and makes a space
appears to be more spacious than it is.
ADVANTAGES
• Resistant to chemicals, solvents, oil, and
grease
• Does not rust and is long lasting
• Cresistant to moisture and a wide range
of temperature
• Easily cleaned and reused
• Its transparency allow light to pass
through to allow adequate lighting of
space
• Its heat insulation allow temperature of
room to be maintained
• Gives a nice modern and futuristic
appearance
• Can break easily
• More expensive compared to other
materials
DISADVANTAGES
7. Features:
-Sound insulation in ceiling and wall
-Reduce noise and sound absorption
-Adjust sound and make sound
waves diffuse symmetrically
-It can improve sound articulation
-It is simple to install
Features:
-consists of cushion made from fabric
that have beautiful designs to give a nice
appearance to the space.
-provide a soft surface to provide safety.
-acts as a sound insulator and thermal
insulator to maintain the sound and
temperature inside the room.

8. Aluminium is a chemical element. It is a
silvery-white, soft,
nonmagnetic, ductile metal. Aluminium is
remarkable for the metal's low density and
for its ability to resist corrosion due to the
phenomenon of passivation.
Advantages of aluminium:
- Combined with an appropriate alloy ensures steel durability.
- Aluminium structures have considerable insulation
properties securing from air and light activity.
- Such structures are light.
- Has a natural anti-corrosion layer which efficiently protects
from environmental influences.
- Requires little energy required in the processing process.
- A resource is 100% recyclable.
Disadvantages of aluminium:
- Considerably more expensive than steel
- Abrasive to tooling (aluminum oxide)
- Difficult to weld.
- Has higher spring back - undesirable in forming.

9. Painting is the practice of
applying paint, pigment, or colour to
a surface (support base). The
medium is commonly applied to the
base with a brush but other
implements, such as knives,
sponges, andairbrushes, can be
used.
Advantages of painting:
Keeps Dust, Dirt to a Minimum – keeping
interior walls, trim and other surfaces
painted can keep dust and dirt at bay.
Hides Permanent Marks and Stains -
Painting wall will help to cover permanent
marks or stains that have proven difficult to
remove.
Protects Surfaces - Painting wall will help
these areas hold up under normal wear and
tear, and protect the wall from damaging
effects of water.
Come at fairly low cost - Paint can come
at a fairly low cost and is normally fairly
easy to accomplish.
Ease of cleaning - A good paint should be
easy to remove when required.
