CHARITY FOUNDATION
CITY Summer Leadership Camp 2014:
The Leadership Revival II
Camp Report 2014
2. From the H.O.P.E Director
If you are reading this report, chances are that you were
instrumental in making our leadership camp a huge success, either
as a partner, volunteer or as a sponsor. First let me express my
sincere gratitude to you for joining hands with us in our quest to
raise a new generation of leaders.
The 2014 edition of the C.I.T.Y Summer Leadership Camp was
extremely inspiring, not just for the campers or volunteers, but for
everyone on the executive team. It is indeed a great privilege and
honor to affect lives in both measurable and immeasurable ways.
My personal experience in the days leading to the camp and during
the camp re-energized my conviction and resolve that our model
indeed works.
Last year’s camp was oversubscribed; as only a small proportion of
the applicants could attend the camp either as a volunteer or
camper. We introduced several new components to our learning
and development curriculum and significantly upgraded our
methodology thereby achieving more impact.
As we forge ahead, it is our goal to scale up our operations to reach
out to more people. In respect to our C.I.T.Y (Catch & Inspire Them
Young) programs, we plan to implement more sustainable,
systematic, scalable and strategic interventions in our quest to
spark up a leadership revival in Africa’s youths.
Have a Blessed 2015!
"We cannot always build the future for our youths, but we can build
our youths for the future" -Franklin Roosevelt

4. CITY summer Leadership Camp is a leadership development camp
centered on imbibing life values and building capacity in the lives of
teenagers.
The 2014 edition of the Camp ran from Saturday, July 26th 2014 to
Sunday, August 3rd , 2014, hosting 200 students between the age
brackets of 13 – 18 years (inclusive). These students came from
private and government run schools as well as other youth centered
institutions such as youth correctional facilities and faith-based
teenage communities.. The theme of CITY 2014 Camp was “The
Leadership Revival II”. We believe that people are key to the
development of every home, every society and every nation. This
world needs leaders, not necessarily those who occupy position of
power, but who have uncovered their gifts, talents, mastered self and
are geared towards positive contributions to the lives of others. At
CITY Camp, it’s our goal to develop those leaders.
Camp activities were structured to deliver the leadership revival to
the campers. There were formal classes which covered topics such as
leadership, accepting responsibility, academic excellence,
Entrepreneurship and financial mastery, Personal mastery and
transformation and national development consciousness. Campers
were also challenged to think out of the box and proffer solutions to
real life challenges.
Campers were also guided on career choices through a workshop
session that featured professionals from various occupations such as
accounting, engineering, arts and entertainment to mention a few
There were fun games for everyone, both indoor and outdoor games
such as football, chess, monopoly and campers were able to bond
with one another and also with the volunteers through our buddy
system.
It was an amazing experience than words can express, seeing the
campers grow to bold leaders, burning with a passion to initiate
positive change in their schools, homes and communities.

The participants were split into 8
different squads and usually
worked in teams during camp

There were also intellectually
stimulating competitions, such
as; case challenge, Speak for
change and the Spelling Bee.

CITY Summer Camp 2014
CITY summer Leadership Camp is
a leadership development camp
targeted at teenagers in the
society. The goal of the camp is
centered on imbibing leadership
and positive values and building
sustainable capacity in the lives
of teenagers. The 2014 camp is
the third edition of CITY Summer
Camp and the theme of the
camp was “The Leadership
Revival II”.
7. We can help individuals to
discover and appreciate their
uniqueness (gifts, talents,
treasures);
We can inspire them to define
and develop their passions;
We can shape their perspective
towards service, contribution,
and accepting responsibility;
We can guide their orientation
towards the discipline
of leadership;
We can encourage and guide
them to develop character;
We can coach them in the other
techniques and fine details
about leadership.
In essence we can develop
leaders!
7
Leaders are the
most important
variables in the
equation for change
and development.
Africa’s
greatest need
remains true
leadership.
The leadership revival is all about
making the quest for leadership
development commonplace. It is
activating leaders everywhere. It
is helping people discover,
develop and deploy the leader in
them. It is making the
platforms and resources for
leadership development
available for every teen and
youth in Africa.
Inside every individual is a leader,
just as inside every seed is a tree.
If leadership is contribution,
service, accepting responsibility,
delivering change, motivating
participation, rallying people
around a compelling vision,
solving problems… Then can’t we
raise people to think and act in
that way?
The Leadership Revival
8. At CITY Camp, we believe
that teenagers in high
schools, the students
in elementary schools and
the youth in tertiary
institutions and in the
society at large are the
future.
If we inspire, develop and
train them in solid
foundation and principles of
true leadership, then we are
indeed securing the future.
8
The greatest asset of the
developed world, are developed
people- not infrastructure,
policies or buildings, but people .
Our needs assessment campaign across several High Schools (both
public and private establishments) revealed a lot of inadequacy in
awareness and understanding of what true leadership is among
teenagers. At CITY Camp, it’s our vision to raise a new generation of
leaders with a proper understanding of what true leadership is.
To us, the development of one teenager is the development of the
nation. Hence, we are committed to help shape their future by
providing the right influence and environment based on true
leadership principles. For one day, they shall grow to become the
decision makers and shapers of the future.
Why Teen Leadership?
9. It is our belief that the right mix of
capacity development oriented
trainings and real life inspirational
stories will do well in discovering
and developing the desired
potential in each participant.
Our curriculum is not based on
theoretical and abstract learnings
but on real life practicable
scenarios. We are constantly
modifying and enhancing our
methods to ensure that the
participants get the best hands-on
and mind engaging experience
from every classroom training or
activity.
We aim at enlightening our
participants on the core of
leadership, taking them from the
point of awareness of what
leadership is to the point of
practicing what leaders do. Apart
from the classroom trainings, we
engage the minds and hands of our
participants through the case
challenges where they work in
teams to proffer solutions to real
life issues.
CITY Action Project is usually
carried out by the participants
after the Camp and is always a
wondrous event, hearing how
much can be accomplished when
the mind is set to do great things.
Some projects executed by CITY
Alumni include: campaigns
promoting Green Initiatives,
awareness for recycling, climate
change, waste management and
other causes, organising their own
leadership seminars and welfare
trips and donations to orphanages.
9
A major highlight of our
curriculum is the CITY
Action Project, where
each participant,
working as an individual
or a group, identifies a
need in their immediate
community and employs
the hands and hearts of
others in the society to
meet that need.
Our Curriculum
10. The C.I.T.Y Camp's learning and
development program was built
using the experiential learning
model (ELM), developed by David
A. Kolb and Ron Fry.
Campers gain concrete experiences
and engage in case challenges,
attending workshops, and
competing in several
developmental competitions. Also,
several seminars, trainings and
camp buddy session were built to
engage the campers in reflective
observations and abstract
conceptualisations on the subject
of leadership and other topics
across our thematic areas.
Our thematic areas include the
following: Leadership, Ethics and
Etiquette, Self-discovery series,
Building healthy
Relationships, Innovation,
creativity ands Entrepreneurship
Educational Excellence, Problem
Solving Techniques, Critical
Thinking, Accepting Responsibility
(National Development
Consciousness) amongst others.
At CITY Camp, we make extensive
use of story-telling techniques,
mnemonics, videos, case studies,
several carefully designed class
exercises, team-building activities
to further drive our goal.
10
The curriculum
opens their hearts
to leadership, their
minds to think up
solutions to
problems and their
hands to do as
leaders would do
Our Training Method
11. Food: Participants were fed breakfast
lunch and dinner prepared by the
kitchen staff of Bell’s Secondary
School. There were also snacks and
refreshments during the day and
during special programs.
Speak for change: The Speak for
change program is aimed at driving
research and advocacy in the
campers. The competition was done
at squad level. Each squad was given
a topic to research on and deliver a
compelling speech to drive positive
change.
Case Challenge: The Campers were
given 3 days to think up a solution to
any need they can identify within the
camp environment. They were also
given a start-up fee of 2000 NGN and
were required to make profit from
their capital. The challenge awoke
the creativity of many participants
and exposed them to business
principles such as marketing, planning
and basic accounting.
Sports: Sports were played at an
inter-squad level. The games include
football, volleyball, sack race and
relay race. Indoor games like scrabble
and chess were also available to
campers.
11
Camp Tit-Bits
12. Spelling Bee: The spelling bee was also an
inter-squad game and was aimed at
improving the vocabulary and word
knowledge of the participants.
Movie Night: The Gabby Douglas Story
was the movie for 2014 Camp. It was also
a highlight for the campers. The lessons
learned from the movie was enormous
and many campers requested to watch
the movie all over again. The lessons from
the movie also resonated in our
curriculum and this made classes more
impactful.
Career Fair: The Career fair was so
successful that at the end of the
programme, we had many campers with
clear perspective of what they intend to
study or become in life. It was an
expository program that involved many
different occupations and practicing
professionals. There were also free books
given by career coach, Omozino to further
guide participants in making the right
career choices.
Workshop: This involved hands-on
training in bead-making, bag making,
pastries, tye and dye, photography, public
speaking and many more. The workshop
sessions ran for two days allowing
participants to switch classes or continue
in the craft of their choice.
Variety Night: The campers also had a
night to chill out and express themselves
in music, dance and drama.

Leadership is not in
position, it’s in people
accepting responsibility.
The ‘R’ in Leadership is
responsibility. The world
needs people who will
accept responsibility for
a cause and for a people.

• Since inception in 2012, over 4000 teenagers across different schools
in Lagos and Ogun State have successfully participated in a C.I.T.Y
program, while over 520 teenagers from schools across the south-
west zone have been privileged to be a part of the C.I.T.Y Summer
Leadership Camp
• Feedback from schools and parents from the last two summer camps
have been tremendously amazing. Participants of CITY Leadership
camp have shown improvement in accepting responsibility, goal
setting and planning and leadership skills.
• A major testament to our impact is the award we received in
February, 2014 from the Lagos State Government and the Lagos State
Ministry of Education for the impact of the C.I.T.Y Program in schools
in Lagos.
• The benefit of leadership education – provided at this level cannot be
over emphasized. However, these type of training is not infused in the
academic syllabus.
• By supporting and promoting Leadership programs, we are playing a
huge role in influencing the future of the nation and Africa as a whole.
CITY Camp is set to provide a lasting platform for
teenage leadership growth and development,
using proven educational methods to achieve
positive outcomes..

Impact to Participants
16. We don’t stop at just trainings, we
empower our campers to be agents
of change in their homes, schools
and communities. At the end of
every camp, each participant is to
carry out a change project called CITY
Action Project, either as an individual
or as a team, to directly impact their
community positively. This change
CITY action project (CAP) is a
platform for teenagers to proffer
practicable solutions to problems in
their communities and take part in
nation building. CAP provides an
outlet for the teenagers to put into
practice all they have learned and
accept responsibility for a cause or
for a people. The goal of CAP is to
inspire teenagers to:
Projects undertaken by some of the
teenagers include:
Advocacy – creating a comic and
publishing educational and
empowerment articles. The images
on the comic were hand drawn by a
teenager, Idris Abdul, and shared on
Facebook to the rest of the world.
Trainings - Providing leadership
trainings to other students in their
school based on leadership
principles learnt on Camp. Another
program was organized in their
community to share the same
messages of leadership and
purpose. They went as far as
placing an advert on Eko fm to
create awareness on their program.
Relief Projects - Providing aid to
less privileged. Two different groups
embarked on this project. One of
the groups got their whole school
involved in the project.
Community Development - This
took the form of sensitizing the
community on the importance of
bush clearing and mobilizing them
to take part in bush clearing
exercise.

Goals: 2015 Outlook
A constant goal for us is continuous
improvement.
We hope to increase our reach
across the various states in Nigeria.
We intend to host non-residential
summer leadership camps(schools)
in multiple locations this year, so as
to cater for more teenagers at the
same time.
It’s our goal to train more people
who can in turn provide similar
platform to other teenagers in
other parts of the country and the
world.
It’s our goal for 2015 to grow our
partnership and relationship with
other organizations, both private
and state owned. We will leverage
on these relationships and execute
more youth empowerment and
entrepreneurship trainings.
We also aim to enhance our
teaching methods and set up
follow up programs for the
teenagers so we can continuously
engage them even after the Camp.
It’s our goal to create an interactive
and user friendly website where
our Camp alumni and members of
the community can easily access
resources and training to support
their development.
