Uterine prolapse
1. Definition
When the uterus sags or slips from its normal
position and into the vagina (birth canal) its
called uterine prolapse
It is also called descensus or procidentia
2. Stages of uterine prolapse
There are four degrees of uterine prolapse.
These are given bellow:
• First degree :
The cervix drops into the
vagina.
• Second degree :
The cervix drops into the level
just inside opening of the vagina.
3. Cont….
• Third degree :
The cervix is outside the
vagina.
• Fourth degree:
The entire uterus is outside
the vagina.
4. Causes of uterine prolapse
Complicated delivery through the vagina.
Weakness in the pelvic muscles.
Weakening and loss of tissue tone.
Major surgery in the pelvic area leading to
loss of external support.
Over size of calf.
Excessive force during birth.
5. Correction of uterine prolapse
1. Caudal epidural anesthesia was done.
2. Then partial foetal membrane was carefully
separated.
3. The tissue debris was removed by washing
and cleaning the prolapsed mass.
4. The prolapse mass was irrigated 0.001%
potassium per manganite solution.
5. With gloved and lubricated the everted uterus
was pushed through the vagina by manual
pressure.
6. Cont….
6. To prevent further complications
intrauterine four furea boli were kept in the
uterus.
7. Buhner᾽s suture was done prevent
reoccurance.
8. Suture was removed after 14 days.
7. Survivability after the uterine
prolapse
1. Uterine prolapse occurs mainly after parturition
when intra abdominal pressure increases.
2. The condition can be corrected with favourable
prognosis if treatment is initiated at early stage.
3. If the condition is complicated with the
occurance of milk fever then changes for
survivability of the animal is very less.

The conclusion drawn from these observation are
that cows with uterine prolapse have a good
chance of surviving if treated.
9. Fertility
• Is the ability to conceive children
or young. But the fertility can be
changed after uterine prolapse.
