Slides from the 2015 User Experience (UX) & User Interface (UI) Exchange. The event included a variety of presentations and hands-on activities, in addition to networking opportunities with other industry professionals, all focused on user experience, user interface / visual design, icon design, interaction design, information architecture, and usability research. Co-Hosted by Esri (www.esri.com) and San Diego Experience Design group (www.meetup.com/s-d-x-d/)

Star Date 41148. You and your team are on a large research and transport ship,
the ArcGIS Space Observatory 5, transporting citizens between Terra 1 (Earth)
and Terra 2 (New Earth). Your team is responsible for navigation and spatial
awareness as you travel throughout the galaxy.
The ship abruptly drops out of warp drive while traveling to Terra 1. The ship’s
cruising engine still remains functional. Your team has been asked to find a
suitable place to land on a nearby planet or moon while repairs are done to the
warp engine. Crews on outposts near or on Terra 1 have been contacted to assist
with repairs. They have asked your team to send coordinates once the ship has
landed.
In addition to finding a safe place to land, you’ve been asked to provide scans of
elevation; potential exploration locations; and danger probability of the
surrounding area for rover exploration, soil sampling, alien life, and atmospheric
harvesting.

45. Hands-on Activity Themes / Topics:
• Team Goal:
Design a paper prototype using the provided map and materials to complete all three
stages of your interface design.
• Stage 1 Exercise: Design your map pin.
Place three markers for options that represent a safe place to land.
• Stage 2 Exercise: Design your cluster pins.
Provide clusters for places to collect atmospheric gases, minerals, and potential signs
of alien life.
• Stage 3 Exercise: Design your pop-up panel.
Provide coordinates to standby repair teams and elevation data of the surrounding
area.

46. Hands-on Activity Themes / Topics:
Your team is working on a new app for UX/UI/IA to quickly connect with coworkers
and industry peers in the surrounding area and view recommended places to
meet outside of the office.

47. Hands-on Activity Themes / Topics:
• Team Goal:
Design a paper prototype using the provided map and materials to complete all three
stages of your interface design.
• Stage 1 Exercise: Design your map pin.
Place a marker for your location, professional design groups in San Diego, companies
with UI/UX teams, and the best places to meet socially (e.g. happy hours, presentation
rooms, workshops, weekend socials).
• Stage 2 Exercise: Design your cluster pins.
Identify areas that have stacked markers or pins and provide three options that are
centrally located for the group to meet up.
• Stage 3 Exercise: Design your pop-up panel.
Name your three networking locations, and add a description and rating by the group.

Beginning September 1, 2020, a contagious virus strain from the Atlantic Ocean
has spread globally within a few short months. We have gathered intelligence that
infected sea life was caught and eaten by coastal civilians in the Americas,
Europe, and Africa. The nature of the virus is hard to detect and spreads slowly
through the body attaching itself to the vertebrae. Individuals who have eaten the
infected sea life did not show any hostile signs of transformation for at least 15
days.
All commercial air travel has been terminated until further notice to help contain
the spread. We urge all civilians to seek safety at the nearest fort.

49. Hands-on Activity Themes / Topics:
• Team Goal:
Design a paper prototype using the provided map and materials to complete all three
stages of your interface design..
• Stage 1 Exercise: Design your map pin.
Place markers to identify your location, safety forts within a certain radius of your
location, and retail stores (to loot on the way to the fort).
• Stage 2 Exercise: Design your cluster pins.
Determine population density of the forts and ride-sharing opportunities with other non-
infected persons..
• Stage 3 Exercise: Design your pop-up panel.
Include information about the fort and the best chance for survival at each fort.
