FRENCH–AMERICAN DIGITAL LAB
// CONNECTING CULTURES
PROGRAM GUIDE
NOV 16-25, 2015
2
Dear French-American Digital Lab participants,
I’m very proud to welcome you to this initiative,a project that has been 18 months in
the making from the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and Business France.
Perpetually at the cutting edge of media and culture, New York has recently
become a booming tech hub with a special emphasis on the arts. It’s a distinct
startup community that is proving to be immensely profitable,as both an incubator
of creativity as well as a generator of capital.I felt that it was the right time to create
the Digital Lab to reflect the infinite possibilities at our disposal when we unite
these two realms.
With longstanding ties to New York’s premiere cultural institutions, the Cultural
Services is uniquely positioned to give participants a foothold into the cultural
startup network. The Digital Lab program is designed to support you, entrepreneurs
in their international development, providing vital connections with major
organizations as well as insights into the subtleties of the American market.
Over the next 10 days you will visit some of the most innovative leaders in both tech
and the arts, including YouTube, Google, Hearst Corporation, Kickstarter, and the
Metropolitan Museum of Art. You will also meet with a talented team of industry
professionals to coach you through everything from US market business strategies
to cross cultural IP and investment legal advice. Sounds intense? You’ll enjoy some
much-needed diversion at a performance of Sleep No More, the groundbreaking
interpretation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
I would like to take the time to warmly thank our co-producer Business France, as
well as all of our partners behind this dynamic program: l’Institut français, Créatis/
Gaité lyrique,NUMA,Paris&Co,and the Made in NY Media Center by IFP,particularly
Joana Vicente, Executive Director of IFP/ Made in NY Media Center by IFP, and
Sabrina Dridje, Director of the Made in NY Media Center by IFP. I would equally
like to thank Orange and Havas, as well as the City of Paris for their incredible
commitment to the Digital Lab.
Last but not least, I would like to thank the amazing departments at the Embassy
for their time and commitment, and I hope you’re as excited as I am for an
unprecedented opportunity for French and American startup creators.
Best of luck!

About the Cultural Services of
the French Embassy
The Cultural Services of the French Embassy
provides a platform for exchange and innovation
between French and American artists,
intellectuals, educators, students, the tech
community, and the general public. Based in New
York City, Washington D.C., and eight other cities
across the US, the Cultural Services develops the
cultural economy by focusing on six principal
fields of action: the arts, literature, cinema, the
digital sphere, French language and higher
education. www.frenchculture.org
AboutThe French-American Digital Lab
The French-American Digital Lab is a new
interdisciplinary exchange program created by the
Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York
and co-produced with Business France within the
framework of French Tech New York City. This program
aims to stimulate creative and business partnerships
between cultural innovators in France and the US.The
first session takes place in New York and is open to
French candidates. The second session will be in Paris
and opened to American candidates.
Focusing on training, research, and product
development, the French-American Digital Lab is
a program for creative development in the cultural
industry. Its objective is to help content creators and
early stage startups adapt their products to French
and American markets, discover the local startup
ecosystems in the cultural sector, and develop
relationships with cultural partners. It targets start- up
companies in the cultural field and content creators
that wish to explore the potential of their products in
an international creative ecosystem.
The French-American Digital Lab’s intensive, ten-day
program consists of meetings, seminars, and creative
collaboration sessions for cultural startups and
content creators. Seminars will examine the question
of how to adapt a product to new cultural and
economic contexts. During collaboration sessions,
participants will take part in themed workshops
examining the numerous challenges facing
technological innovators from all backgrounds.These
sessions will push participants to re-examine the core
of their idea, and to re-envision that idea’s potential.
Participants who complete the ten-day program will
learn to look at their projects with fresh eyes.
In addition to seminars and creative collaboration
sessions, participants will benefit from individual
mentorship. They will have the opportunity to work
with their mentors over the course of numerous
creative sessions with the goal of helping participants
develop their connections to prominent cultural
institutions such as museums, operas, television
channels, film and music producers, publishing
houses, and music labels.

between people, the communities they live in and the institutions they build. In that spirit,
he’s been working on a series of disaster response live action games that give participants a
deeper understanding of emergency response, creating more effective advocates for UNICEF
and its campaigns.
He’s the co-founder and currently senior advisor to Water Canary, a social venture developing
a fast, networked, water‐testing device that radically reduces the amount of time, expense,
and skill required to test water for pathogens. The Water Canary was a winner in the 2010
NYU Stern 11th Annual Business Plan Competition and is currently preparing for a 2012 pilot.
He’s also an advisor on rapidFTR, a mobile phone application and data storage system that
helps aid workers collect, sort and share photographs and information about children in
emergency situations so they can be registered for care services and reunited with their
families. He’s also adjunct faculty at the Interactive Telecommunications Program of NYU,
a “laboratory for the recently possible”, home to one of the most amazing communities of
makers and thinkers in NYC. He teaches the ‘Designing for UNICEF’ course in collaboration
with the amazing UNICEF innovations team. Prior to teaching he completed a one year
residency as a researcher at ITP.

French-American Digital Lab // Connecting Cultures - Welcome Pack

  • 1. #digitaLAB @franceinnyc FRENCH–AMERICAN DIGITAL LAB // CONNECTING CULTURES PROGRAM GUIDE NOV 16-25, 2015
  • 2. 2 Dear French-American Digital Lab participants, I’m very proud to welcome you to this initiative,a project that has been 18 months in the making from the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and Business France. Perpetually at the cutting edge of media and culture, New York has recently become a booming tech hub with a special emphasis on the arts. It’s a distinct startup community that is proving to be immensely profitable,as both an incubator of creativity as well as a generator of capital.I felt that it was the right time to create the Digital Lab to reflect the infinite possibilities at our disposal when we unite these two realms. With longstanding ties to New York’s premiere cultural institutions, the Cultural Services is uniquely positioned to give participants a foothold into the cultural startup network. The Digital Lab program is designed to support you, entrepreneurs in their international development, providing vital connections with major organizations as well as insights into the subtleties of the American market. Over the next 10 days you will visit some of the most innovative leaders in both tech and the arts, including YouTube, Google, Hearst Corporation, Kickstarter, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. You will also meet with a talented team of industry professionals to coach you through everything from US market business strategies to cross cultural IP and investment legal advice. Sounds intense? You’ll enjoy some much-needed diversion at a performance of Sleep No More, the groundbreaking interpretation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. I would like to take the time to warmly thank our co-producer Business France, as well as all of our partners behind this dynamic program: l’Institut français, Créatis/ Gaité lyrique,NUMA,Paris&Co,and the Made in NY Media Center by IFP,particularly Joana Vicente, Executive Director of IFP/ Made in NY Media Center by IFP, and Sabrina Dridje, Director of the Made in NY Media Center by IFP. I would equally like to thank Orange and Havas, as well as the City of Paris for their incredible commitment to the Digital Lab. Last but not least, I would like to thank the amazing departments at the Embassy for their time and commitment, and I hope you’re as excited as I am for an unprecedented opportunity for French and American startup creators. Best of luck! Thomas Michelon Deputy Cultural Conselor FOREWORD
  • 3. 3 About the Cultural Services of the French Embassy The Cultural Services of the French Embassy provides a platform for exchange and innovation between French and American artists, intellectuals, educators, students, the tech community, and the general public. Based in New York City, Washington D.C., and eight other cities across the US, the Cultural Services develops the cultural economy by focusing on six principal fields of action: the arts, literature, cinema, the digital sphere, French language and higher education. www.frenchculture.org AboutThe French-American Digital Lab The French-American Digital Lab is a new interdisciplinary exchange program created by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York and co-produced with Business France within the framework of French Tech New York City. This program aims to stimulate creative and business partnerships between cultural innovators in France and the US.The first session takes place in New York and is open to French candidates. The second session will be in Paris and opened to American candidates. Focusing on training, research, and product development, the French-American Digital Lab is a program for creative development in the cultural industry. Its objective is to help content creators and early stage startups adapt their products to French and American markets, discover the local startup ecosystems in the cultural sector, and develop relationships with cultural partners. It targets start- up companies in the cultural field and content creators that wish to explore the potential of their products in an international creative ecosystem. The French-American Digital Lab’s intensive, ten-day program consists of meetings, seminars, and creative collaboration sessions for cultural startups and content creators. Seminars will examine the question of how to adapt a product to new cultural and economic contexts. During collaboration sessions, participants will take part in themed workshops examining the numerous challenges facing technological innovators from all backgrounds. These sessions will push participants to re-examine the core of their idea, and to re-envision that idea’s potential. Participants who complete the ten-day program will learn to look at their projects with fresh eyes. In addition to seminars and creative collaboration sessions, participants will benefit from individual mentorship. They will have the opportunity to work with their mentors over the course of numerous creative sessions with the goal of helping participants develop their connections to prominent cultural institutions such as museums, operas, television channels, film and music producers, publishing houses, and music labels.
