The document provides instructions for writing a media essay analyzing how a film extract constructs representations of regional identity through technical aspects like camera shots, editing, sound, and mise en scene. Students are advised to plan their answer before writing, focusing their response on each technical aspect in turn or tracking the extract chronologically while using examples. They are instructed on how to structure their response using a Statement-Quotation-Inference framework and given an example introduction paragraph. The document also provides guidance on continuing the analysis over multiple scenes and preparing work for marking.
2. THE QUESTION REMAINS THE SAME
• Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation of X
using the following:
Camera shots, angles, movement and composition
• Editing
• Sound
• Mise en scene
• 50 marks
EAA: Explanation, analysis, argument-20 marks
EG: Use of example-20 marks
T: Terminology-10 marks
3. PLANNING YOUR ANSWER
Before writing, ensure you have a clear plan for your essay, including key
points and examples.
You only have 45 minutes writing time but are expected to write
approximately 4 sides
4. THAT QUESTION AGAIN
• Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation
of REGIONAL IDENTITY using the following:
Camera shots, angles, movement and composition
• Editing
• Sound
• Mise en scene
• 50 marks
EAA: Explanation, analysis, argument-20 marks
EG: Use of example-20 marks

5. HOW TO STRUCTURE THE RESPONSE
You may wish to focus on each technical aspect in term.
You can track the extract chronologically, or focus on specific sequences –
but you must ensure that you include a range of examples from all four
technical areas.
6. SQI
STATEMENT – State a fact, i.e. what technical device is used
QUOTATION – provide a clear and specific example from the extract
INFERENCE – what can we infer about regional identity from the
example?
7. INTRODUCTION
There is no real need, or indeed time, to write an introduction to you essay.
You may wish to set out your argument (i.e. what the overall
representation is and whether it is fair and accurate).
Regional identity is constructed in the extract to reinforce the
stereotypical binary opposite between those who live in the city
(selfish, impatient and stressed) and those who live in the countryside
(caring, unhurried and calm) positioning the audience to find
humour, rather than challenge traditional representations, in the
differences between Doc Marten and the locals.
8. THE FIRST ‘SCENE’
The establishing shot is of an outdated doctor’s
surgery, lacking many of the modern items one would
expect to see, this cultural code immediately positions
the audience to regard the countryside as ‘behind’ in
terms of technology and other advancements – this is
a common stereotype of the countryside. The use of a
wide angle allows the audience to see the contrast
between the suit wearing Doc Marten (who
represents the ‘city’) and the two boiler suit wearing
tradesman (who represent the countryside). Doc
Marten is positioned higher in the frame, which
could connote power and authority, whilst one of the
two workers appear lazy; he is seated, overweight
and eating. The room appears uncared for, it is lit
using natural soft key lighting and through the use of
mise en scene we can see that there are boxes piled

TASK
Analyse in detail all four
sequences.
Write your responses on word
and post to your blog.
You have two lessons to complete
this task.
PREPARE YOUR WORK FOR ME
Use the same colour code system as I have used to identify where you are
hitting the AO.
I will not mark your work if it is not highlighted correctly.
