This document proposes an innovative and more cost-effective plan for expanding subway lines in York Region. The "Smart Subways" plan would build 14.5 km of tunneling for $800 million, including 9 free subway stations, with no operating costs. This is far less than the estimated $3.56 billion and ongoing operating costs of the existing plan. The innovative approach uses precision-controlled trains that can bypass or shuttle between stations, reducing travel times and costs.
