The BBC was founded in 1922 as a public service broadcaster. Its
creation was the result of a series of debates in the British
Parliament about the need for a publicly funded broadcasting
service that could educate and inform the public. The BBC's first
radio broadcast was made on November 14 in 1922 and it
continued to expand throughout the 1920s and 1930s. During
World War II, the BBC played a crucial role in keeping the British
public informed about the progress of the war and in keeping the
public confident. In 1955, the BBC began television broadcasts
initially only in London but eventually expanding across the country.
The 1960s and 1970s saw significant changes in the BBC's
including the creation of new channels, the introduction of colour
television, and the launch of programs such as Doctor Who and
Monty Python's Flying Circus. The 1980s and 1990s saw the BBC
facing increased competition from other broadcaster which lead to
the introduction of new channels such as BBC Two and the
creation of the BBC Worldwide. Today, the BBC is one of the
world's leading public service broadcasters with a range of
television, radio, and online broadcasting. It continues to be funded
by the British government through a license fee paid by households
with televisions and is crucial to providing high quality news and
entertainment to audiences in the UK and around the world.

BBC Three is a digital television channel that launched in the
UK in 2003. It was the BBC's first digital only channel and
was created to target a younger audience (16-35) with a
focus on entertainment, comedy and drama. Initially BBC
Three broadcast only in the evenings with the rest of the
day's programming being shared with the BBC's other
channels. In 2008, the channel began broadcasting 24 hours
a day and in 2011 it became available online as well as on
television. Over the years, BBC Three has showed many
famous shows including Gavin & Stacey and Little Britain. It
has also produced a number of original programs such as the
mockumentary series People Just Do Nothing and the drama
Thirteen. In 2016, the BBC announced that it would be taking
BBC Three off the air and moving it entirely online to try to
save money and reach a younger audience who are more
likely to watch content online. This was controversial with
some people believing that it would lead to a reduction in the
quality of the channel’s content and a loss of viewers as not
everyone can get access to the internet. However, the move
has been successful with them continuing to produce popular
and award winning content and reaching a wider audience
through its online platform.

BBC Northern Voices is a project that was launched
by the BBC in 2020. It is a new campaign that aims to
allow the people living in the north of England to share
their stories and experiences. The project includes a
range of content across the BBC’s business including
radio, online platforms, documentaries, podcasts and
articles. It focuses on a diverse range of topics from
politics to social problems. BBC Northern Voices aims
to challenge stereotypes and give a voice to people or
communities that have often been silenced or not
given a platform in the media. It also aims to connect
with audiences in the north of England providing a
more accurate representation of the region and its
people. The project has been very popular by
audiences and has been praised for its diversity and
inclusion. It is part of a wider effort by the BBC to
show off the diversity of the UK and to make sure that
all voices are heard and represented in its channels
and programmes.

After watching many BBC Three documentary's I have seen some features that I will add into my
documentary that they like to add into there own. For example they love to use interviews, I will
definitely be adding interviews into my own documentary as you get to learn about the
characters and there situation. Also you get to see there opinion on the subject which is being
documented. This will then trigger discussion by the audience and will help grow the advert and
also help the audience reflect and ask themselves questions about the opinion and the interview.
Interviews can have many effects on the audience so I will use the interviews to portray different
effects such as sadness or inspiration in my documentary. In my documentary I will also add in
key facts and statistics, this will done to create effects as well such as fear factor or to persuade
my audience. Facts are very important as there is no argument against them so they can be a
really good tool to inspire my audience. They also like to open there documentary's with an
establishing shot or a cinematic shot. I will also do this because it is great to set the scene and it
is also a great opportunity to add in a voice over to introduce the documentary and the purpose
of it. They also love to add in voice overs. As well they like to add in news stories or past stories
on the subject I will also do this to back up opinions. These past stories can be shown to my
audience to show the positives or negatives to something so ill add them in to create effects on
my audience. The BBC also add in cinematic shots of details during interviews or right after to
show the audience what they are talking about or to show the impact of something. Finally BBC
like to end there documentary's on a cliff hanger or on a note which can lead onto another
documentary so I will also try and do this to keep within the codes and conventions.

This is one of BBC Three’s documentary’s, “Women on Tag”. In this
documentary we see a serious style of filming to show the poor lifestyle
of this women. We see many different techniques and different shots
used. For example they love to use facts, stats and statistics in there
documentary’s. They use these to influence the audience into feeling
sorry or happy for the subject in the documentary. As an example in this
one, they use it to feel sorry the women and show the extent of the
problem they are trying to overcome. In my advert I will also do this to
make my audience feel some emotion for example happiness or
sadness. Another technique they use is interviews such as this one
seen on the second picture. This is called the talking head, in this they
get to learn about the subject and there situation. This could be used to
make the audience feel sorry for them or to inspire them or to actually
teach the audience. I will use this technique in my advert to inspire,
teach and entertain my audience. One more technique they use is The
Voice of God this is when they have a voice over by a narrator, this
person will know everything about the subject is used to educate the
audience about the subject or situation. During this, cinematic shots
such as establishing shots or long shots will be playing on screen to
show the setting to the audience. I will also do this in my advert to set
the scene and maybe to introduce the documentary to my audience or
to transition between scenes or interviews. I will also use cinematic
shots when speaking about stats, facts and statistics.

There is many different styles of documentary's. These include
standard style which you can see in the first picture. Standard style
is when the subject is sitting in one position and the camera is facing
them straight on or slightly to the side. A second style is
conversational this is seen in picture two. This is when the subject is
on the move while speaking or answering questions. The interviewer
is usually behind the camera and not in the scene. The third style is
in the moment this is where you track the subject completing a task
or doing an activity. Other styles include a host for example host +
standard is seen in picture three this is the same as the other styles
but the host or interviewer are on camera and take part of the
scene. In my documentary I will use a mixture of styles as I will want
to show activities being complete so I will use “in the moment” I will
also be interviewing my subject so will use a mixture of all including
standard, standard + host, conversational and conversational + host.
I believe my documentary will be shot in the participatory style as I
will address my subject and it will almost be like a film documenting
the life of someone. I will also be shooting it in an observational style
as because it is the lifestyle of someone I’ll be watching it unfold
with the host behind the camera.
