Type: General magazine (fashion, beauty, lifestyle and advice)
Publisher: Prisma Press
Target audience: Women between the ages of 20-55
Prima effectively appeals to their target audience because they usually use more
feminine based colours like pinks and purples, which usually attracts the eyes of
women. This magazine uses famous celebrities usually between the ages 20-55
to match the target audience so that they are more relatable. Prima always
include on their magazines a large, bold title which is always in the same font on
each cover, this is to make the magazine brand more recognisable to its readers.
Also Prima magazine uses images of celebrities heads, facing forwards to catch
the attention of the reader on all of their magazines. On the front cover they also
include anchorage text to appeal to their audience, using catchy words or a short
sentence . For example on this magazine issue it states 'Anything is possible‘,
more common ones they use are 'fabulous' or 'omg'.
Type: Specialist magazine (football)
Publisher: James Bandy
Target audience: Teenagers and pre-teens
Match! appeals to its target market because it uses language that the younger
generation will understand, more and the things that are included in the
magazine like posters are more for the younger generation. The magazine is
more picture based than informative, because teenagers don’t have (an attention
span as long as adults) so the Match! magazine includes just enough info, but
the magazine is more visual to appeal to their target audience. It includes the
same criteria as the Prima magazine but everything is more based around
football and not lots of different topics.
Type: Specialised magazine (music)
Publisher: John J Kilcullen
Target Audience: 16-26
Billboard appeals to their readers because they
have a very colourful magazine, for example the
title has a very unique design where the 'B, O, A
and D' has the colours red, green, blue and
yellow, this is very eye-catching and
recognisable for the reader. Due to these colours
being very bright. In my opinion that appeals
more to younger audiences then older, because
darker colours are viewed as more mature. All
the images on the front of the billboards
magazines are famous musicians who are
similar ages to the target audience, which means
they are more likely to enjoy their music. Also to
make the artist more recognisable, Billboard
uses their name as the anchorage text, so it
stands out to advertise the person who is on that
particular issue. Each of their issues are different
colours depending who they think will be more
interested in the music in that particular issue.
For example on this one are all shades of pink
which would be mostly used to capture women,
because their is a female musician on the front
cover.
From the magazines that I have researched, which
are mainly high end of the fashion genre, they have a
large image on the front of the cover usually a
celebrity that covers most of the page. They usually
have very limited writing on the front, just a few words
or a phrase. They appeal massively to the younger
generation e.g. teenagers and young adults. They
have a very modern and urban theme to them and
they look very sleek and clean cut. The magazines
are usually priced in the region of £4-£8. The ones
that I have been researching are in the middle of this
pricing bracket because they are very well known,
contain high end fashion, and display the high end
look through their magazines.
The masthead is located on the left
side of the cover and has been rotated
round to be on its side. Due to this the
writing looks like a smiley face winking,
which is the main trade mark for this
magazine and is why it looks so
recognisable. The winking face is
meant to make the magazine seem
more youthful and cheeky, to grab the
attention of their target audience.
The masthead is very simplistic
because their magazines are very well
known and are easily recognisable, so
they don't need a very detailed and
really colourful design to catch peoples
attention. Also this type of magazine is
usually subscribed for every month so
they don’t need much detail to grab
people.
The cover lines on this issue are
arranged in a sequence which
resembles steps. These are going
down which could suggest continuity
because its the idea that steps carry on.
Also the words used are very short and
simple words but are very effective to
the average person. Also they are so
simplistic they attract more people
because the magazine uses their kind
of language. The word beautiful and
easy makes people want to read on to
see what they apply to. I-D always uses
vague, short, simple and catchy words
on their covers to engage their
audience to make them want to read
on and buy the magazine.
The background colour on this magazines really defines the model on the front and all the bits of writing.
The colours have been kept very monochrome with the grey background, the black detailing and white
writing. These neutral colours have been kept very simple because they are meant to highlight the detailed
pop of colour on her eye which conveys a message to everyone. In my own opinion I think the message is
that everyone one is beautiful inside even if they have a very boring and simple look on the outside. This is
shown by the colours escaping out of her eye and dripping down her face.
The barcode and price has been included on the front of this magazine
cover. This is because it shows clearly all the information the readers will
need to buy this magazine. All of the writing and the barcode have been
placed on the left side of the magazine because it makes it easier for the
reader to process the details due to it all in one place and not dotted all
around the cover. This is also because they want to free up space on the
magazine so it looks a lot sleeker and more modern.
I love the central image on this magazine because it looks
very simple and attracts the attention of a lot more people,
because she looks like an average women not a celebrity.
Also because she is a female it indicates that this
magazine issue is more aimed at female audiences.
This magazine is very minimal and uncluttered the
writing is limited to a few words and is quite small in
size. On most ID magazines the main image
dominates the page because this gives it a lot more
of a cleaner look. It makes it seem more high end
priced because there is not lots of detail on the front.
The model on the front is wearing a
very simple white top with no logos or
detailing such as lace, this creates light
and space because of the colour. This
colour also makes her seem more
innocent. Her accessory is a black
quilted tote bag which is very
fashionable so this attracts people who
are into fashion and like her particular
style. Her hair is very thick and
voluminous which adds depth to the
magazine, the colour of her hair is light
brown which is a very average hair
colour. The models make-up is very
natural looking which has been done
so the accessory on her eye stands out
from the page. The position of her body
is side ways but her face is facing
towards you with her eyes ready to
catch eye contact with anyone who
looks at the cover. This is a great selling
feature because the buyer feels like
they have a connection and relate to
the model which makes them more
likely to buy the issue. She also has
black nail varnish on which continues
the monochrome feeling to the colour
scheme.
The title is located right at the top of the
page which is very easy to notice/see in
between other magazines on the shelves
in the shop. It is very unique to the average
magazine title which is usually black or
one whole colour. This title is a mixture of
colours i.e. blue, purple and red. This
makes the title look very unique and with
elements of fun and excitement due to it
bursting with colours. The shape of the font
is very simplistic, there are no little details
such as swirls or patterns which
correspond with the edgy fun side of the
colours. The title of this magazine is
obviously well know because the model on
the front of the magazine is covering part
of the title, and this suggests that the
magazine is very recognizable and doesn’t
need the full title to be clearly shown to
their target audience.
The main image is a female model which
shows that this type of magazine is
targeted more at females then males
because there is a relatable female on the
front. She is also very well known, so this
means that people that love her are more
likely to buy this issue because they want
to see if she is inside the magazine as well
as on the front. From what she is wearing
you can see that this is a more edgy and
alternative magazine because she is
wearing very monochrome clothes with
skulls on which suggest they have styled
her to look quite gothic and quirky. She
looks like she is lying down which is very
unusual position for the front cover so this
makes it more unique and exciting. Cara
Delevingne who is on this front cover has
been made to look like she is waking up
on a bed of teddy bears which is very
unusual because the front covers on
average are very simplistic and they just
have the models face staring at the reader
but this one is very different in many ways.
On LOVE magazines they always position the barcode
in the bottom left corner on the side. This is because
they don’t want to draw attention to the barcode, due
to it having to be on the magazine In order to
purchase it. Having the barcode there also suggests
that you can buy this magazine in the shops because
if it was subscription only then it wouldn’t have a
barcode because it would not need one.
There is a very wide range of colours used
on this magazine more then the more
simple covers. There is a mixture of very
bright, fun and vibrant colours like the
purple and green but there is also a lot of
monochrome, there is more white than
black, because black would make the
cover look very dark and then the vibrant
colours could not show up as good as
they do with the white. Due to the colours
being very bright and airy it attracts people
to the magazine. Especially if it was next to
one which was more simple looking.
These types of colours appeal more to
teenagers and a younger audience
maybe 16- mid 20’s, because the colours
are very bright which reflects the
stereotypical young personality. The background of this magazine cover is
very different because usually the
backgrounds are one solid colour like
white or blue. But on this cover it is a
continuous image of teddy bears. To break
up this they have added colored objects
such as the purple handbag on the left
hand side. This background looks very
effective on this particular cover because
the monochrome colours really make it
look less busy. You would think that the
amount of colours and images on this
magazine would look too much and
overpowering but in fact it doesn’t, it looks
very neat and works together really well.
The anchorage text is ‘AWAKE GIRL’ which
strongly suggests that this magazine is
targeted at the younger female market
because it has the word girl in it. Also they
have included the name of the model
which is Cara Delevingne, which will make
people who like her want to buy the
magazine/be attracted to it. The font of the
text looks like it has been doodled which
gives it quiet a personal touch and makes
it more appealing to younger audiences.
All of the letters are in capitals which
makes it stand out of the page because it
looks very important. It is placed at the
bottom of the page and takes up a quarter
of the page which is very different to the
normal anchorage text because it is
usually very small and isn’t very attention
seeking to the audience.
There is lots of information on this page
which makes the pages easily found and
accessed by the readers. Due to everything
being clearly written down it makes it more
appealing to the reader. All the page
numbers have been clearly written in a
bigger font to be more eye-catching for the
reader. Above the explanation on the
contents there is a sentence to intrigue the
reader into turning to that particular page.
These phrases are very short and snappy
which get to the point easily for example
pg474 'Mr Right'. This a very simple and
short phrase which makes people want to
know more and for it to play on their
emotions.
There is no title stating ‘contents’ page - just
the name and logo of the magazine. This is
to continue to show that it is Elle magazine
to new and potential viewers. This looks very
minimalist and simple because it is also
black which adds depth to the page and
goes with the background. The title also fits
with the modern and fashion theme running
through this magazine.
Even though the background looks quite
cluttered to some people, in my personal
opinion I think it looks very stylish and it
shows everything that will be included in
the magazine, which will make people very
interested into reading on. All the colours
in the background go really well with each
other even though there is a whole collage
of photos.
Under each page number there is
information about what is on that page.
This is to make people intrigued as to what
the page looks like and all detail that could
be on there. They also show that they have
posters to make people want to get the
magazine because their favourite celebrity
might be on the poster.
Mostly all of Elle magazine contents look like this, but all of
the different issues have different backgrounds to make
them look more individual to that theme for that particular
magazine.
The colours on this magazine contents page
are very random and don’t have any obvious
connection between them all. In my opinion
they really go together and look very modern
and suit the fashion genre of this magazine.
The white and black compliment the
pink/coral tones in the pictures and there
are added colours which are less noticeable,
for example like the royal blue and vibrant
green in the bottom left photo.
The title contents is in a very
big, bold lettering which has
been placed at the top of
the page to make sure
people know what the page
is about. There is a lot of text
on this page then more high
end magazine contents due
to this being out of a high
street magazine. All the
subheadings and headings
are in the same colour and
font which makes them
stand out from the page.
The text has been sectioned
into different areas such as
lifestyle and fashion, this is
to make the text effective
because people can look
exactly what pages fashion
is on. The font that has been
used for the main text is just
a very simple and a
stereotypical font often used
in a magazine as the main
writing. The writing has
been organized into
columns and this makes the
page look very neat and it
creates more space on the
page. The contents have
been displayed across two
pages making the contents
look very full throughout. It
also makes the reader think
they are getting a lot for their
money due to there being
more things to read about in
the magazine. The date has
been put under the title to
make it easily noticeable for
the reader so they know
how recent the magazine
issue is and if the contents
are worth reading. For
example; recent gossip or
latest trends. Have been put
in a box to stand out from
the title .
The colours are very
random and don't really
have any similarities
between them; particularly
when looking at them and
comparing them. They
seem quite autumnal
colours like the oranges and
reds. The colours that are
involved with this magazine
are darker and more stylish
looking colours. They look
like they are targeted at
older women from the ages
of 30-55 because of the way
its styled and the use of
words on this page. These
two pages are not really
sticking to a colour scheme
such as monochrome or
pastels it is quite random,
but in my opinion it works
for this kind of high street
magazine because on
average none of them keep
to a particular colour
scheme.
There is a vast amount of images on this page which is very different to other contents
pages, this means this magazine is very visual but there is a lot of text as well. This is
unique because there are usually more images than text. There are a variety of pictures
from different pages from the magazine scattered over the two contents pages. These are
there to persuade people to go to those pages. Unlike other magazines this magazine looks
quite cluttered and random because in my opinion all the pictures look very out of place
and the pages don’t really flow together- they look very mishmash. Some of the pictures
match the page such as the women and the ocean cause-way picture. These go together
because they match the genre of fashion/lifestyle, look very professional and as though
they belong there (they don’t look like they clutter the page asit does now with the added
I love the typography on this
double page spread because
it gives real depth to the page
due to the 3 dimensional style
of bubble writing. The colours
on this title really stand out
from the page because the
orange is really piercing and
catches your attention
straight away. The off
white/grey colour really
compliments the orange to
make the lettering stand out.
Also due to this title going
across both the pages it
brings them together to make
them seem continuous and
very urban looking. The
phrase ‘picture this’ really
relates to what this page is
showing, which is two similar
photos. The wording makes
you imagine these pictures in
real life because its using
commanding language. Due
to this it really involves the
reader into the page and
makes them feel like they are
at the place pictured. I know
that the title is the main focus
for these pages because it
slightly overlays the
photographs. The reader then
thinks this is what your meant
to view first.
On the left page the only info is at the top placed right in the corner, there is only limited writing
and it is in a very small font. This makes people presume that the writing isn’t very important
because it is just in the corner and not in massive letters. There isn’t very much writing because
the images speak louder then words which means it doesn’t need lots of info because it doesn’t
make much of an impact on the page itself.
The picture on the left is
located on the top half of the
page and is the biggest
picture out of the two
involved with the layout. The
colours in the pictures fit in
well with the colours being
presented on the page- for
example: the Chinese style
lettering is an orange tone
matching the title. Also the
black and off white match
the background of the page.
The other image on the right
page is located on the top
half of the page but is a lot
smaller then the other
photo. The photos have
been colour coordinated to
that particular page to fit
with the background colour.
For example- the picture of
the door is mainly white, so
it has been placed on the
white page. On the opposite
picture inside the building,
the colours are mainly black,
meaning it has been placed
on the black background
page. This is because it
makes the pages flow better
due to the colours
coordinating and not
contrasting.
There are two background colours on this double page spread which look
as though they separate the layout into two individual pages, instead of one
page flowing to the next. Because of the clever organisation of everything
on the page it looks as one. Even though the background consists of two
different shades, black and white. This gives a monochrome look to the
pages and creates a base for all the other aspects shown such as the title.
This double page spread is very urban
looking and modern because of the
graffiti like lettering in the title, and the
pictures of the urban and sleek
looking building. The colours are very
striking and are in-keeping with the
modern theme with these pages.
The writing is organized very neatly on this page into columns and blocks.
There are two columns on the left side in the middle and there are two
clumps of text at the bottom and top of the page. This looks very
aesthetically pleasing to the eye because is very neatly placed and is
symmetrical. There is quite a lot of text on this page but because it is
separated into sections and has been placed to create space, it seems like
there is minimal text even though there isn’t. Also there are quite a few words
in bold throughout the texts which makes the reader attracted to those
words first because they stand out from the page. There are no special fonts
used in the text just the normal Ariel font.
In keeping with the
minimal look this page
includes 3 pictures to
break up the writing so it
isn’t too heavy looking.
These three photos are a
mixture between colour,
black and white tones,
this is to make the page
look more varied and
exciting. This page looks
very neat and planned
out because it is all
sectioned into nice
aesthetically looking
pieces. I really love how
they have used different
sizes of pictures on this
page to fit the gaps
because it makes the
page look bigger and
more airy. The pure white
background really frames
all the writing and
pictures. This double
page spread looks very
simple but it is very
effective in many ways to
attract their target
audience because it has
been designed to look
neat but very quirky.
The colours on this page
are very minimal and
have been kept to greys
blacks and white with
added colour from the
two images on the left
page. These colours are
very simple but are very
effective, because the
slight colour in the
picture stands out and
makes the reader
attracted to it. The more
monochrome colours
add an edgy and stylish
feeling to the double
page spread.
This page looks very unique and unusual to the eye
because the picture under the girl looks like the lower
half of a bulldog, which makes the girl seem like she is
half dog half human which is very unusual for a fashion
magazine. This makes it so unique and needs
someone to look at it for a while to actually understand
what the picture represents and means it draws the
reader in due to its quirkiness.
I really like how the
picture fills the whole
page because it makes
the picture the
center/focus point for the
page. Also I love how the
picture looks like it has
been ripped into two
because it makes it look
really edgy and adds
definition to the page.
The woman in the picture
is looking directly at the
reader, which makes the
reader enticed into her
stare, this encourages
them to want to read the
page to see what her
style of clothing means
and what the whole
picture represents.
This typography is very bright and stands out massively from the page
due to it looking 3 dimensional. The font is very rounded and soft
making it look very neat and it goes well with the page. The 3
dimensional look of this title really brings definition to the page. The title
slightly covers the image which suggests that it is the main focus for the
page because it is overlaying everything. The position and shape of the
title is very unique from other magazines because it is curved over two
pages, which really makes the pages flow together and look like one
piece. In my opinion I think by looking at this page, this magazine is
targeted at young females, maybe of the age 15-25, because the title
looks very bright and vibrant. Also it looks quite urban which will attract
more of the younger generation.
The colours that have been used on this double page spread are
very vibrant and vivid such as the pinks and blues/teals. I think they
go really nicely together and just make the whole page look like
one. This looks like it is out of a fashion magazine because all the
colours show this, due to them being very coordinated and not
random. The colours suggest that the magazine is aimed at
females because they are very muted not bold looking, which
shows that it is aimed at the ages of 16-28. Also the pinks and lilacs
give this away too. Due to the majority of the page being white it
really frames the images, text and title because it looks very clean
and sleek. The colours in the title are very blocky and remind me of
60’s fashion due to the colours being opposites on the colour
spectrum.
There are only six large images
on the left page this is to make
room for the amount of text on
the right page. The images are
very colourful and match the
whole look of the page which is
vibrant and urban. The images
look very professional and good
quality which adds class to the
page. They are arranged very
neatly in this grid/collage with
the same size gaps in-between
each photo. Even though they
are all different sizes they still
look very stylish and high end
because they all fit into the
fashion genre theme and they
go with the whole page very
nicely. The images cover most
of the left page which suggests
that they are very important and
have been added there for a big
effect.
The pictures all fit in with the
fashion genre such as the nails
and makeup and the clothing
towards the top but with edgy
vibes such as the buildings and
This double page spread has a
lot more text than the average
high-end magazine. The text fills
most of the right hand page but
the typography does slightly go
over the top of the page. The
text is in a very small size and
the font is very simplistic just the
normal body text font. The text is
separated into paragraphs
leaving a cm gap in between
each one. This is to make the
text feel easier to read for the
consumer and to prevent the
page from looking too heavy
and dense. There are just
enough gaps to create the
feeling of space and room
which makes the page look very
simplistic and modern. It is
displayed in columns which
makes the writing look
organised, due to this it gives
the reader the opportunity to feel
more confident reading the
information because they know
it has thought behind it.
I like this colour pallet because its very simple but effective.
The colour of the brick wall which is a very burnt red really
compliments the complexion of the women on the cover.
These colours remind me of the autumn season because
the colours reflect the transition from summer with the
bright pink writing to Autumn/winter with the dark black
and blue colours. Due to these colours it makes this
magazine look very modern and urban which attracts their
target market which is young adults.
I really like these colours because it is a very different
combination to use bright pastels mixed into a dark ambient
background, which is not seen on many magazines. The
pastels which have been carefully styled on the woman
make her stand out from the page and make her image very
eye catching for people who look at it. The background
colours really compliment the bright pastels because it
creates a subtle and quiet background for the loud bright
pastels. Even though there are a lot of colours on this
magazine I believe that they all work and I wouldn’t change
the colour scheme at all.
This colour scheme is very simple which most magazines
tend to use because it is the easiest to get right and
appeals to everyone's taste. They have carefully used
earthy tones such as browns and creams to create a very
daring and edgy base for the bright orange which adds so
much passion and thought into the cover. This magazine
cover looks very effective and gives off different meanings
to people because of the colours. For example it gives off
a slight retro/vintage feel to me because of the tone of
orange and the browns which makes it look very worn.
This colour scheme is very risky and bold due to their
being lots of fluorescents used in large amounts. In
my opinion out of all the magazines colour pallets this
one has the most feminine pallet due to their being
lots of different tones of pink on the cover which is
stereotypically more a feminine colour. Also there is
the lack of white on this magazine which is very
unusual because white is used very heavily on
magazines due to it being a very easy colour to
coordinate with other colours.
This colour scheme is the one which is used the most by
every magazine company's, because red, white and black
have been proven many times to go together and look
amazing. This scheme gives the cover a very modern and
sleek look with a slight edginess because in this case the
pale background and her pale skin frames the black and
white which makes the title pop out of the page. With only
the models lips being red this in turn makes them the focal
point on the magazine. Red is the only colour used and as
a result makes this a stand alone colour.
Even though this magazine has very small range of
colours it looks extremely bold and crazy due to there
being fluorescent orange and yellow being placed
together on a dark to light ombre background. These are
very daring colours to put together but in my opinion I
think they work perfectly together because they reflect the
bold and bright personality of Miley Cyrus. I don’t think
these colours fit any kind of season because they are
neither summer colours or winter. Due to the colour
choice I think this magazine looks quite masculine with
the blacks and oranges.
I love this font because it is very thick and blocky which makes a
massive statement on any magazine. I love how the fonts are
arranged with the second word going down the side of the other
because it creates a lot of space. The font is very bold and simple
but gives off a very edgy and cool look. It hasn’t got any little bits of
detail such as swirls but I think the font doesn’t need these extra
touches because it looks effective already. However the only thing
I don’t like is that it is not very unique because a lot of these types
of fashion magazines have a very simple bold, blocky font like this.
This font really caught my eye because it is very unique
and detailed which means it would look extremely
effective on a magazine cover. I love how it looks 3
dimensional due to it being outlined very heavily, this
means it would stand out of the page and also bring
depth into the magazine. This font looks very indie due to
it not being very blocky, it has a lot more of a softer look
to it than some that are very bold and thick.
I love the harshness of this font because it makes a very big
impact due to it looking quite edgy and evil. I love how there
are some thin parts to this font and some thick parts. It makes it
look very unique to other fonts and gives it depth but still looks
quite dainty and soft on a magazine because of the thin parts.
This font is very bold and striking to their audience, it is in
capitals so it is grabbing attention because capitals are usually
used when shouting something which makes people more
aware.
This font looks handwritten due to it being joined up and there
being no gaps between each letter which I really love because it
gives a personal touch to the magazine cover. It looks like it has
been handwritten just for you, which is really effective to make
people buy the magazine. I love how simple it is. Due to the
handwritten look it flows more because it is joined up and has no
gaps which make it fit in more with the magazine cover. The font
is in bold which adds edge and character into it, but not as much
as some, it is just enough to be eye catching.
I love how this font is a lot smaller in height then the other fonts
I have chosen this because it looks more unique. This font is
very simple and there are no little details on it. It looks very
indie/alternative due to the letters not being in capitals and the
overall effect it gives. However, I feel like this font is too simple
for the kind of feel I want my magazine to have, because it uses
the same style as many other magazines use which means it
wouldn’t make a big enough impact for my cover.
I love the overall look of this font because it looks very edgy
and detailed but also having a very soft and rounded effect
because the majority of letters are curved. I love the little
points off the edges of the letters because it makes all the
letters flow together and adds depth to the font. This font is
quite unique but still simplistic at the same time because it
has elements of average magazine fonts, but also has added
unique extras which make the font more stylish and effective.
I love the colours involved with this font because it makes it look very
fun and stylish. The dripping effect looks very indie and would fit into
my genre. It adds an unique edge because not many fonts have this
feature. I think when this is on a magazine the dripping will really
highlight the font on the cover and not make it look out of place like
some may. Also it looks very 3 dimensional which will be more eye
catching to their target audience. However I think the colours may be
hard to style on the magazine cover because they are complex and
may not coordinate with the feature picture. If I had this font it would
be either one block colour or two coordinating colours.
This font looks quite similar to the second one on this page but is a
little thinner in thickness and the ‘e’ has been rotated slightly to give a
focus point in the title. I love that this font looks very classic and stylish
but also it is very effective to get points across. All the letters are in
capitals except the ‘e’ which makes the font look unique to any others
with the similar edgy style as this one. However I have taken
inspiration from this font because I love how one of the letters is
different to all the others. It makes people look at it for longer due to
them being interested as to why one letter is in a different style.

I have decided that my target audience will be mostly girls between the ages of 16-30 years old. I have chosen this because I'm
more interested in younger fashion and have more knowledge of fashion between those ages. The genre I have chosen is
Indie/Alternative fashion. I have chosen this genre because I am very interested by this fashion and I like how edgy it looks on
someone. I will also touch onto other areas of fashion but mainly I will keep with this one genre. My magazine will be more high end
than high street because I feel like a more luxury looking magazine is more appealing to my target audience because they are more
into high end brands due to them wanting to impress. The price for my magazine will be £5.99. My magazine will be published every
month with a new issue and will be sold in high streets shops and supermarkets, but will mainly be a subscription based magazine.
The amount of pages will be between 60-80 pages because I want it to be quite a long read but I want quality over quantity. I will
use modern/urban/edgy colours to make my magazine stand out from every magazine that has my same genre, so it will be the
favourite type of fashion magazine which means more sales. My magazine will include lots of indie/alternative fashion styles,
different and exaggerated make-up products and looks, also some lifestyle pieces but my magazine will be mostly fashion based
because that is my genre.

By researching my target audience in detail I now know how to make my magazine more
appealing to them so it is more popular in the fashion market. I know what the average
teenage girl likes and dislikes so I can reflect the good in my magazine not the bad so it
attracts their attention. I now know that every girl has a different and unique fashion style
and I want to reflect all the different types in my magazine to give them inspiration and
ideas into how they can change or better their style. I will do this by placing lots of
different high quality photos into the magazine with lots of different styles within my
genre.
These are some of the fonts that I
really like the idea of for my own
magazine. Some are quite blocky and
bold but most of them look
handwritten and flow. I gathered all of
these fonts off 1001 fonts.com. I
wanted to see what fonts were on
offer for my magazine and to do a lot
of research into what I think would
make a statement. Also what would

FfQltnTCMO_2F9b6z28JNdkyY_3D
All my responses were female which means this
research is very accurate and reliable because my
target audience is females and not males.
From this survey I can see what brands are liked most and
include them into my magazine. The ones which were
chosen the most are:
• Topshop
• Urban Outfitters
• Converse
• Vans
The brands which were chosen but not as highly as the
others are:
• Nike
• Levis
The brand which wasn’t chosen at all was Zara so I will not be
including this in my research because the survey proves that
Zara is not very popular.
From this survey it shows that the people who
answered my questions were between the ages
15-24 - which is my target market. These results
will be helpful to make my magazine be perfect.
This will then enable me to pick the correct
fashion styles for the age ranges shown here.
All the fashion styles were equally chosen.
From this I now know that I will include
different sections on each of these styles
when making my magazine-to please
everyone. I will also include other aspects of
fashion such as high end because having
more styles will appeal to more people when
the magazine is published. From doing this
survey I now know that people are more
open to different styles because all the
options were chosen. Also I know that it
wouldn’t be a massive risk to include other
areas of fashion such as the high end market.
.8 people said they would buy Wonderland
magazine and 3 people each said that they
would ‘never’, ‘not really’ and ‘yes every
week’ buy this type of magazine. This
information makes me want to make my
magazine better than Wonderland issues
because I want every one to be between
‘sometimes’ and ‘yes every week’ for my
own magazine. This survey has helped me
take aspects of Wonderland magazine, but
change a lot of it to suit more of my target
market.
From this survey it shows that most people
spend between 8-10 pound on a fashion
magazine. Taking this into consideration I
think I will price mine around the 5-7 pound
mark because taking into consideration the
age of my target market, I want it to be
affordable but still classed as high end style.
This in turn will ensure people feel that
satisfaction when buying it. I know that not as
many people chose the 5-7 on the survey but
I want my magazine to be different and
appeal to anyone's budget.
The majority of people wanted
pictures so I will ensure that my
magazine is mostly picture based but
with limited text because a few
people still wanted text. I will only
include some advertising but not as
much as some magazines like ID
because people get bored of
advertising and they don’t like it
which reflects on the survey. I will
definitely not include any posters
because people think they can make
a magazine look very cheap and
tacky and this is conveyed in the
survey because no one chose
The most
popular
colours
which were
chosen
were white
and black,
so I will
ensure that
they will be
included on
the front
cover of my
magazine.
The second
most
popular was
metallics
which I will
probably try
to include on my cover because a lot of people
seemed to like the idea of metallics on the front.
Other popular colours were blue, purple, red, pink
and yellow which I will definitely choose a couple to
complement the white, black and metallics. The
colours which I will not be using are brown, orange
and green because these colours will not attract my
target audience because none of them were chosen.
When designing my cover I will take
these results into account because they
will help me plan the most appealing
magazine for my target audience. I will
not include a lot of text on the front,
maybe just a few effective words or
phrases to catch the audience and keep
them wanting to read on. Also I will either
have a collection of images on the front
or a very simple model with an aspect of
mystery to make the audience excited for
what is going to happen inside the
magazine.
From these responses my target
audience would like to see latest trends
and high end and high street things as
well as other things that are shown on
the survey. This survey is very useful
because it will help me to decide on
what to put into the magazine and what
different sections there could be through
out. Also I can include these so then I can
definitely attract my target audience
because I will be including things they
would want to see in a fashion magazine.
From my research on Uk Tribes I have
decided that my target audience are
in the leading edge category, mainly
‘Indie Scenesters’ who are always
ahead of the trend and create new
trends by mixing lots of different styles
together to make their own new style. I
have chosen this genre because I feel
like I can really meet their fashion
values well when producing my
magazine, for example mixing lots of
different styles together to then
produce an individual one. Taking my
target audience into consideration I
will be focusing on brands such as
urban outfitters, American Apparel,
Phix and Adidas which are all high
end and are the style that I am going
for. All the clothes that they stock are
conceived as ahead of the curve and
High fashion.

This is a very simple flat
plan of my double page
spread of how everything
will be laid out and placed.
I have included boxes that
will be replaced with
pictures and writing. I
have chosen this layout
because I feel like it really
looks very nice and even
looking. I have done this
because I can make sure
everything on my double
page spread is placed in
the right positions and so I
know what to include in
the finished piece.
The eye moves from the
logo ID through the
colourful motif on the
models eye to the
background which
reinforces the brand.
Then down through the
slogan writing which
makes the consumers
captured by the clever
use of words on the
magazine. Then through
the model to the
barcode and price which
makes the consumer
make a decision if they
want to buy the
magazine.
Then finally the eye
moves past the bottom
of the image of the
model.
This magazine is very simple and is mainly focused on the brand logo and
the image of the model, which means they don’t really put anything of
importance on their cover. They make them have a simplistic and clean
look meaning there isn’t much to pull in the reader by using the Z eye
movement compared to magazines such as Elle.
The consumer
focuses on her
neck and shoulder
which connotes
the fact that ID
magazine don’t
really apply
hotspots to their
covers because
there is nothing
that is of a
massive
importance, due to
there not being
anything unusual
or eye catching in
the rectangle.
However there
may have thought
about the colours
because in the
hotspot there are
different colours
such as white,
black and silver.
The hotspot also includes a little bit of the anchorage which highlights
the fact the model and the anchorage are the main features of this
magazine. Usually magazines use the models face for the hotspot to
draw in the consumer if they are well known, but with this cover the
model is not famous. In my opinion they didn’t want to use her face
because she is not easily recognizable to the public meaning they wont
be as easily drawn in. Also I think they have purposely placed this
hotspot there to make the cover look very neat and mysterious
The eye moves over the logo WONDERLAND which reinforces the brand
because that is the first thing the consumers see on the front of magazine.
It also shows them what kind of magazine it will be because if they know
the brand wonderland, then they know that it will be fashion genre. Then
the eye moves through the barcode which will make them want to buy the
magazine because it is the second thing they see. Then the eye moves
through the text on the right, which makes the consumer get a little insight
of what the magazine will be like. This makes them more likely to buy the
magazine.
The eye crosses over the
model on the front of the
magazine which means
because her face is facing
forwards, it attracts the
consumer to buy the
magazine. The eye then
moves to who is in the
magazine e.g. Lana Del
Rey. This makes people
more likely to buy the
magazine from looking at
this because if someone
really likes these
celebrities on the
magazine then they will
buy it. Lastly the eye
moves across the
anchorage text which is
placed towards the bottom
middle of the magazine,
which persuades the
consumer because it is a
phrase which makes the
consumer think and will
usually end up with them
buying it.
This magazine is a very good example of the Z eye movement on a
magazine because it shows very clearly that the eye moves through all the
important pieces of information on the cover of the magazine. From this
magazine cover I now know that Wonderland takes into account the z eye
movement when creating their covers. This really is effective with this
magazine because everything the eye moves through is relevant and
adds a lot to the magazine. Also because of this it has lots of persuasion
so it gets consumers to make their purchase.
The consumer focuses on the models neck and clothes with a little
bit of her face. This connotes that Wonderland magazine have
purposely done this because in the focus point there are a lot of
colours and textures. Colours are used a lot on magazines to make
the covers eye-catching and to attract new consumers who haven't
heard of their brand. These colours are very vibrant and are not
unusual colours to be shown all together, but because of this they
stand out when put next to other magazines. But other then the
amount of colours there isn’t really anything of massive importance
which highly
suggests that
wonderland
magazine do not
really think about
the point of focus
massively but do
a little due to that
being a very
colourful part of
the magazine.
Based on this I
think the
magazines target
audience is young
females between
the ages of 16-25
because of the
colours used on
the point of focus
on the cover.
Due to clothes being in the hotspot it shows to the reader that this
magazine is a fashion magazine because usually the models face or
writing is the point of focus. Obviously Wonderland wanted to
clearly show that this magazine issue is very colourful and involves
unusual fashion items.
The consumer focuses on the face of the model and the colours.
This conveys that the model is the main focus for this magazine.
Inside the hotspot rectangle there is both her eyes, her nose and her
mouth. Due to it being ID magazine the model has one eye closed
and this is shown in the rectangle to the consumers so the hotspot is
not only showing the models facial expressions but is also
reinforcing the closed eye trademark. This is used widely over all
their magazines. So consumers will look at this cover and will
instantly know that it is ID magazine and if they like ID this will make
them buy the issue.
The point of focus
is directly in the
middle of the
magazine cover
which shows that
ID have really
thought about the
placement of
everything on their
cover. Also in the
point of focus
there are clearly
two colours pink
and orange, these
are very vibrant
and bright, they
make the
magazine very
stylish and this is
shown very clearly
in the rectangle.
The models eye is facing right towards the consumer inside the
hotspot which is used on almost every magazine because the way she
is looking instantly connects eyes with the consumer who feels like
they have made a connection. This is a great selling point to get them
to buy the magazine issue. Due to the models lips being slightly open it
looks like she is ready to make conversation which is also a great thing
to connect with the reader. If there was another magazine with a model
looking the opposite way and that was in the hotspot then the
consumer would definitely choose this magazine compared to the
The eye moves through the ID logo which reinforces the brand just like
most magazines do because they want to sell their brand to consumers.
The eye moves across through the models forehead to the comb which is
being brushed through her hair. This makes the consumer easily know
that this magazine is based on makeup and fashion because this kind of
image wouldn’t be placed onto a football magazine. By going across with
their eye the consumer will pick out all the bright and vibrant colours
showing that the magazine issue is very fun and appeals to them if they
are in their target market.
Then the eye moves
down through the
models face seeing her
facial expressions and
her details. Further down
you then can see the
anchorage text which is
very clearly shown in
white bold letters. This
makes the consumer
gather what the
magazine is going to be
like or whom it involves
inside. This is another
good place to put the
text in the z movement
because it makes the
consumer want to buy
the issue so they can
find more about what
happens inside the
magazine.
The eyes then reach the barcode carefully placed at the bottom left on
the cover. This makes the consumer make a decision on whether to buy
the magazine or not. This is a well thought out place to put the barcode
towards the end of the Z movement because it gives the consumer
enough time to take in everything else on the magazine not just rush
them into a quick decision. The eye moves along the bottom of the
magazine cover which gives them another chance to look at the main
image which is the model on the front of the magazine.
The consumer focuses on the models face and a little bit of the
anchorage text. This conveys that the model is the main focus for the
magazine. The model looks very pale and her eyes, nose and mouth
are in the hotspot. This is a very predictable hotspot for this type of
magazine because the model image is the main/biggest thing filling the
cover, so it is usually made the main focus. The only colours in the
hotspot are black (from her lipstick) white (from the text) and pale skin
colour (from her face).
These colours are
quite unusual for the
hotspot because
magazines use very
bright and vibrant
colours for the
hotspot to catch the
consumers attention
directly. This
suggests to me that
this magazine may
be aimed at younger
teenagers who are
into more gothic/
alternative fashion
due to the colour
chose and style.
The anchorage text is also slightly in the main point of focus which
suggests that they want it to be seen easily on the magazine due to it
being in a big font . When making the magazine, Dazed And Confused
must have really thought about where to make the point of focus
because they have placed it in a very good place to attract new and old
consumers to their magazines. In my opinion I wouldn’t place the
hotspot anywhere else because the effect of the placement. At the
minute is very genius and if you changed it, it wouldn’t have as much
of an impact on consumers.
The eye moves through the title/brand of the magazine which is
DAZED AND CONFUSED. This is placed right at the top of the
magazine in very big letters. Because this is the start point of the Z
movement it conveys what the magazine will be if the consumer knows
the brand well, if not it reinforces the brand. Next the eye moves right
through the middle of the models face which suggest to me that dazed
and confused use the Z movement on their magazines because they
have everything placed perfectly within the Z eye movement. When
the eye goes across the models face it show them what kind of
magazine
this is because you
can tell what she is
wearing and how the
image has been
styled to fit in within a
certain genre i.e. this
is fashion. Then the
eye moves down to
the main text on the
page. This makes the
consumer understand
the theme that is
going to be in the
magazine or who the
magazine is aimed at.
It also makes people
know if they want to
buy the magazine or
not because the big
text describes what
kind of atmosphere
the magazine will
have, which will make
them decide if they
want to
buy it. The eye then goes across the model again but it goes to her
hair which has lots of writing on, this makes consumers interested in
what it says because it is very unusual for a high-end magazine to
have this much writing. This is a big selling point because people will
like to see individuality as most magazines follow the same rules and
patterns but in some ways this magazine does but in others it doesn’t,
such as the eyes not moving through all the text which is shown on the
cover of the magazine.
The consumer focuses on the bag which says MILEY on. This
connotes that Miley the celebrity singer is the main focus because the
bag with her name on is the hotspot for the consumer. V magazine
have purposely done this because they know that Miley has a very big
following. When the consumer sees the Miley bag, if they like Miley or
they don’t know who she is but want to see more of her, then they will
more than likely buy the magazine then if there was a random model
as the main image. From the hotspot I can tell that Miley is the main
focus/image for the magazine issue.
The bright orange
colour on the bag is
clearly shown in the
rectangle which V
magazine have
purposely added to
attract consumers
attention. Bright vivid
colours are a very
easy way to include
in a magazine to
attract consumers
eyes as they are
walking past. This
conveys to me that
this magazine is
aimed at young
adults because of the
colour chooses-
maybe between the
ages of 18-30.
I think for this magazine this was the best place to put the hotspot
because it really catches peoples eyes when looking at the magazine.
In my opinion from looking at this hotspot I presume that they take into
account the placement of the point of focus when making their
magazine because they have placed it in a very effective place. To
change the effect of the magazine, V could have placed the main focus
as Mileys face to draw in consumers because her eyes stand out very
vividly from the page because they are a very bright vivid blue.
The eye moves through the top part of the logo V which reinforces the
brand (Most magazines make the logo the first thing people see
because they want it to be well known and remembered). Next the eye
moves across the main image which is the celebrity Miley. This makes
the consumer want to buy the magazine if they like Miley, due to her
being on the front of the magazine. Due to her hair being bright
orange they want to know why her hair is that colour and what she is
wearing, this is also a great selling point for the magazine. The eye
then moves through the bag which is the main focus due to it being the
biggest thing on the
magazine cover. This
also reinforces the
celebrity Miley
because it has her
name written on it.
This means people
will be able to identify
her rightly. Then the
eye moves down
through the text on
the left explaining
what the magazine is
about e.g. Fashion.
This also makes the
consumer interested
because from the
front of the magazine
you can not really
identify what fashion
style will be shown
inside the magazine.
Which will make the
consumer interested
for what's inside the magazine. Then it moves down to the number
which states 83, this is the issue number so the consumer will look at
this and know that they have made quite a lot of magazines. They will
know that they are trustworthy and are maybe a good read which will
make them very interested in buying the magazine. Lastly the eye
moves along the bottom of the magazine to the other bit of text which
also reinforces the celebrity. By looking at the Z movement I can now be
sure that Z magazine think about this when making their magazine
because everything lines up perfectly to grab the consumers attention.
I used this image for the
main picture on draft
magazine, before I took my
own photo. I choose this
because I felt like the model
really caught the attention of
the audience, with her eyes
being a very bright blue and
her eyeliner being very dark.
This creates a very dramatic
look. I used this picture as
guidance and inspiration for
my own front cover image. I
positioned my own model
looking directly looking at the
reader similar to this.
However, this image really
doesn’t go with my theme
because my indie genre is
more casual/informal and
she is clothed in a very
formal and posh outfit.
I chose this image because it
really relates to my double
page spread. To make this
my own image I edited a lot
to make it fit in with all the
colours on my page. I firstly
got rid of the background and
the women's body so it was
just the legs. Then I rotated
the image so the legs were
coming from the top of the
page. Also I edited the image
lighter so it wasn’t as harsh
as the original image is.
I placed this image on my
double page spread at the
bottom of the right page. I
chose this image because I
feel like it really fits in with
my fashion theme and its
gives a personal feel to the
page, due to it being a
drawn image. I loved this
because it looked really
abstract and dramatic and
gives the page an edgy
look. I decided to not edit
this massively because its
already quite simple and
effective, so I made it a
little darker to add a little
definition to the page.
I chose this image
because I feel that the
blue rocks in the rings
really complement the
mom jeans on the page.
Also these rings go with
my theme perfectly
because they are very
fashionable. I edited this
image by making it a little
more darker because in
my opinion the picture
looks too light exposed,
which makes the image
look bad quality.
I have found all these
images off google images
after typing in things like:
Doc martin boots, fashion
drawings, rings and
magazine model.
I chose this picture for my front cover because she is placed
looking forward which made me think that her eyes would
attract the target audience. I really liked the placement of
her head because it makes the reader intrigued into the
magazine because usually the models have a straight head
facing forward. Alice's face looks really glowy and
professional so that is what swayed me to choose this photo
out of all the others, also the lighting is really high quality.
This image really suits my theme of indie fashion out of all
the others. Which made me want to present my best image
on the front of the magazine because it will make it appeal
to the audience. I styled her in these clothes for the photo
because they are quite pale so they don’t take attention
away from her face. Also the colours compliment each other
because the blue in the top matches the mom jeans
perfectly. Her makeup is very soft and natural because I
wanted to draw attention to her cat eye flicks, clearly
because that is in fashion right now. The lighting is very
bright and ambient because I wanted it to reflect a
welcoming and bright image for the front cover. I wanted her
face to have a blank expression because I wanted it to
intrigue the reader into wanting to read it. Her hair is slightly
damp at the bottom which makes her look very urban and
people view it as a person not a image. Also her body
language portrays a friendly vibe to make the audience buy
the magazine. I edited this image by getting rid of the
background because it looks a lot more professional and
sleek without the background. Also I edited her eyes more
blue because I wanted them to stand out from the cover and
connect with the target audience. In addition, I made the
picture a little warmer to make it appear more welcoming
and attractive. As well as this I have made the image a tiny
bit lighter just to make it look effective on the front cover.
I chose this picture for my double page spread because it
really reflects the information on the page perfectly. Also it
has a very casual vibe to it which makes it feel very
welcoming. Her makeup is a little different to the front
cover because I wanted it to look a little different but
nothing drastic. I just added a bit of red lipstick to her face
to make sure the background matches the model. In
addition her hair is styled slightly differently to the front
cover image which also makes the reader interested
because there is more varied content in the magazine. The
background really goes well with my theme because it
gives a very indie vibe. Also it looks really natural which
makes the picture have a personal feel to it. Her hand is
placed across her face slightly to make it very casual and
not too formal. Her head placement is the same as the
picture on the front cover which makes them look similar
so it keeps one theme running through the magazine. All
the colours are very soft and don’t make a massive
impression but they match into the overall colours in the
magazine. This picture is more zoomed in then others
because I really wanted to zoom into the features of Alice's
face and so I can relate the picture to the text explained on
the double page spread. I wasn’t inspired by any other
pictures on double page spreads from magazines because
I wanted to base the picture directly off my theme and
what I have spoken about in my article. I edited this picture
by also making her eyes more blue by taking the brush
tool on Photoshop and using a light blue colour. To make
this look very natural and unique I made the colour very
sheer. I also changed the lighting slightly by making it a lot
more warmer and lighter to brighten the image and make it
look more ambient. The lightening appears very natural
and really highlights her face which makes her look very
healthy and like she has a glow to her.
My target audience really likes the
finished front cover because they think it
fits in really well with the genre. The
impression that they get off the cover is a
welcoming and friendly vibe- this then
encourages them to buy it. The reader
loves the way all the text is set out and
the effect it gives. Also they think the
colours really coordinate and don’t clash
and match every thing throughout the
magazine. They think that the magazine is
very well suited and crafted to their age
range due to the young model and the
type of words used. They can really relate
to everything mentioned on the front cover
because they are all topics and fashion
styles that are in trend for this season and
the next. They love the way everything is
arranged simply which enables them to
easily see what content the magazine will
include. The typography is interesting and
striking and really draws you in. The
audience feels like they can really relate
their life and style to this front cover, this
then makes them feel inspired and to
gather ideas and tips from it. They think
that it also appeals to people who want to
know more about a certain fashion and to
change their style.
MAGAZINE COVER
CONTENTS
They love how clearly the page is laid out and
how simple it is to find they section they are
interested in. the pictures on the side really
makes the audience intrigued for the content
on the page relating to the photo. They really
like the way the photos have been arranged
because they think it looks very stylish which
links into the fashion genre perfectly. They
love the colours because they all go together
nicely but there is contrast as well between
the bright vibrant and lively colours and the
deep edgy and meaningful black and white
photos. They love the flow of the title because
it looks very classy and gives an urban feel to
the page. Also they adore how the text is
arranged into sections because it means they
can go to the page they want in a quick way
instead of flicking through the magazine trying
to find the page they are looking for. The
page gives off a very young and youthful vibe
which makes the target audience very
interested in the magazine. The hexagonal
pattern appears very neat and concise, it also
frames the page. This gives an airy because
the pictures are very dense and draw
attention. This is a massive contrast to the
other side which is very clean and pure
because it has no content on it.
DOUBLE PAGE
SPREAD
The audience really likes the clear title placed at the top of the page because it describes exactly
what the page is going to include. The main picture is a good size depicting Alice in a thoughtful pose
wearing her style of top, which gives the audience a small idea of what her style is. But then on the
other page there are ideas of what she could be wearing there like the jeans which you cannot see in
the photo. This makes the reader get outfit inspiration and know clearly how much everything is priced
so they then can buy these items for themselves. Also the fashion items make the audience relate
because these are very well known and are in fashion. I like how the title is a rhetorical question
because it makes the reader want to find out the answer in the text. The audience loves how in text
different occasions are mentioned meaning there is a lot of variety and the audience is more likely to
take inspiration from the text written. They also like how there are not only fashion tips but there are
also makeup and hair tips , i.e. they love the diversity of ideas given. The reader likes the numbers
123 because they think that in three easy steps the can achieve this look.
EVALUATION
In my opinion, my research into similar magazines was very effective because I started off finding out all the magazines
titles that fit into my fashion genre e.g. wonderland and vogue. Then I gathered all the covers that they have produced
over a period of 4 years to see how much the magazine covers have progressed and changed over time e.g. the titles
may have been in bold and then maybe a few years later they may look handwritten. This helped me with my title because
I thought of how my magazine cover would change over time, so I chose a font that would never go out of fashion due to
its simplistic look. Also I examined the magazines to see if they change the fonts or colours at different seasons in the year
e.g. ID magazine covers are very colourful and vibrant in the summer giving connotations of happiness and light. However
in the winter seasons the magazine colours get removed and replaced with back and white/ greyscale type filters, this
suites the overall atmosphere in the winter months because everyone feels quite melancholy due to the weather. I
repeated this detail of coverage of magazine covers over lots of different fashion magazine brands to widen my research
in order for me to create the perfect cover for my magazine. I then did a little research into different genres of magazines
such as football and music to identify the differences in the cover and layout between my genre of fashion and that
particular genre. This gave me lots of research and what to include in my magazine and not to include any features that
other genres have, which fashion doesn’t. This enables me to stay in my fashion theme so I do not confuse the reader.
From all my research into different magazines, I then had a very clear image of what different things I am going to include
in my research like my magazine being high-end and what kind of information i will include inside of the magazine. Also I
analysed different magazine covers, contents and double page spreads in detail to identify what details I need to include in
my magazine and what layouts work really well in a magazine. I focused directly into the fashion genre because I wanted
to just research this because that is my genre so It was more logical to focus on one genre. I then also analysed the z
movement and point of focus to enable me to see what attracts the audience and what they see first on the magazine so I
can create my layout around this. From doing this research I find out that it is very complex and hard to create the perfect
magazine which appeals to target audiences because you have to include so much information and follow certain layouts
and also come up with original ideas.
My research into relevant audiences was also very effective because I created a Moodboard of all the different types of
fashion that my audience would wear, which I can then include into my magazine. I then created an audience profile on a
male and female to find out what they like and dislike, so I can use this information to help form my magazine and the
content inside. I created a questionnaire for my target audience to answer to see what they prefer and want to be included
or not in my magazine. This is very important for my research because I need to appeal to my target audience so my
magazine is popular. The next thing was research into UK tribes to identify what category my target audience come under.
Also the different brands that fit into the category so then I can include them in my research. I have learnt from doing the
target audience research that it is hard to appeal to everyone that comes under the target age, because everyone has
different likes and dislikes so it is hard to please everyone in the magazine.
Front cover:
One creative decision that I had to make was what to call my magazine. This was very hard because the name
would then shape my magazine and how it looks. I chose the name ARTSIE because it sounds quite catchy
and I wanted to mix art and fashion together to make an arty magazine. The original font that I was going to
use was one that flowed together and was handwritten, to give a personal feel to the magazine. However this
font really did not work or create the impression I was hoping for which then made me change it to this very
unusual font which stands out from the page. Art is the semantic field of my genre because it relates to my title
ARTSIE. I also had to decide on the colours that I needed to use because this would then form my colour
scheme that I will then use throughout all of my magazine pages. This then made me think to put a plain and
simple background so it doesn’t take away the attention from my main image. Next, I had decide on what
writing I will have on my front cover and how it will fit in with my genre so I edited the background a different
colour then the original image because I made the choice that it went with my theme better. Also what words
will attract my target audience so they will be more likely to buy the magazine issue. The fonts were a massive
decision for my front cover because I wanted them to stand out and be bold/simple, but also I wanted them to
be individual and unique to the magazine. This was important because I want my magazine to memorable and
important to people. The picture was quite easy to do and for it to fit in with my genre. The creative decision
that I had to make was which pose should my model have and how will that effect the overall look of the front
cover. Also I had to decide on what features to include on the magazine cover and which will match my overall
genre. I took inspiration from a BAZAAR magazine to identify where things like the barcode and date are
placed to get a magazine cover that could be directly compared to a real magazine and it to look similar. My
magazine changed from a very disorganized front cover to a clean and neatly presented piece.
Contents:
Creative decisions that I had to make were what fonts for my main title and body text, this really
effects the overall impression my magazine gives because I wanted to portray a very unique and
high end feel to the magazine. I had to think of how to make my magazine contents different to the
average magazine contents which is square boxed picture everywhere. So from this I made the
decision to do triangles down the page to create a very unique geometric pattern and have pictures
in each triangle. This then didn’t look right when I started to create the design so I then made the
decision to create a hexagonal pattern down the left side of my page. Next I had to make a decision
of what photos to put into my hexagons I wanted them all to go with my theme so I had to make a
decision of how to edit each one so they looked individual but also seem like they flowed together. I
made the choice of putting all the writing in the middle of the page and not at the side, this was to
make it look very simplistic and so it doesn’t look over crowded. By making all these decisions for
my contents page it really progressed very quickly and became really like a real contents page in a
well known magazine. My finished contents is a very drastic change to my original ideas and layout
for my contents page but I just tried out lots of my different ideas to get this finished one.
Double page spread
The first creative decision that I had to make was what font and colour should the title be. I studied
lots of double page spreads and adored the typography lettering, however this did not suit the page
because it was too much of a bold statement which didn’t go with any of the other aspects on the
page. I chose this font because it is very bold and striking but it also has an edginess to it which
makes it really suit the page vibe. I have put it on a blue/purple rectangle because that is the same
colour which is on the front cover. This makes it all flow and not look like it could be from a different
magazine. The writing is white because it matches the background of the page- it just makes it flow.
I had to make a very hard decision on which picture (out of all the ones I took on the photoshoot)
should be placed on the double page spread. I decided on this one because I felt like it has a very
urban feel to it and the tilted head matches the one on the front cover perfectly. Next I had to decide
on what to place above the main text. First I was going to collage a variety of photos which relate to
the article. However I then came to the decision that, would make it seem too cluttered. So then I
came up with the idea of listing the other items that Alice would be wearing as her perfect outfit and
to include their prices so the reader is informed of how much they would be on average. The double
page progressed form having the idea of 4 pictures on the left page and the title to be in the middle
of them, to then having just one photo on the left page with the title above. The page changed from
a very cluttered and unorganised page to a very simplistic but an effective double page spread
which really fits within the rest of the magazine.
My magazine front cover follows the colour themes
that many well known magazines use (e.g.
Wonderland) on theirs. They are very pale and
minimalist colours that are not too bright or vibrant
and just look very effective on magazine covers.
they frame all of the information given on the front
and don’t draw attention away from key features
such as the image. These colours also fit all
seasons of the year which real magazines follow
these ideas too.
I followed the conventions of BAZAAR magazine font but also changed it to suit my theme. The BAZAAR font is
very bold and really makes a statement and I feel like when compared with mine, mine follows those lines as well.
I chose BAZAAR’S font to follow because I feel like it has an edginess to it and it is very well know by everyone,
so I wanted my magazine font to be well known as well.
My front cover image also follows the forms of magazines because my model is facing directly forward to catch
the readers attention. Many professional magazines use this technique because it is very effective due to the
reader feeling like they have made a connection and can relate to the model due to their position in the image.
Also how I have styled my model matches the way the professional magazines style their models because they
always wear very simplistic clothes, which are either very formal or casual (in my case my model is wearing
casual clothes). In my opinion, I feel like the way the model is dressed is very important because the genre is
fashion so the model has to reflect the fashion which is in style to get more interest from their target market – so
this is very important for me to follow the magazine conventions because it really effects the overall appearance if
I do not follow them. My image
compared to bullet
magazines front
cover image are
very similar
because they are
both facing forward
and are wearing
casual clothes
The square box shows the point of focus, this shows
where the reader will first look. My point of focus follows
the theme of professional magazines point of focus
because on average they are usually placed just under
the face or slightly on it. The point of focus on my
magazine has the models lip, neck, hair and top in it. I
have deliberately placed it here because I knew that part
of her clothing must
be in it because the
magazine is fashion
based, so that will be
what will attract the
reader the most.
Part of her lip is in
the point of focus
because it shows the
reader that she has
got very minimal and
natural makeup,
which gives the
audience the
impression that the
magazine is quite
casual. This means
more people will
relate to it because
the majority of the time the target audience wear
casual clothes to work or at home. Her neck is in the
point of focus because it will make the reader want to
look at the models face. Also there are a selection of
colours in the hotspot because it shows the consumer
that the colours are very pale and quite indie looking.
This suggests to them that this magazine is in the
fashion genre but focussed more around indie fashion.
This represents the z-movement which is the movement
of the eye which happens when we intake the layout of a
magazine front cover. Lots of magazines use this
because it helps them layout their text and image in the
particular z-movement to make the reader interested into
purchasing the magazine. The eye firstly travels across
the title of the magazine which is ARTSIE, this is to
reinforce the brand
and to make it more
memorable
because that is the
first thing the
reader sees. Then
the eye moves
down through the
date which shows
them that it is a
recent issue,
meaning there will
be lots of in season
styles so it will
appeal a lot more to
the consumer.
Then the eye
moves through the
writing at the side which makes the reader intrigued to
read the rest of the magazine because they want to
know what are the best ever indie buys. Then the eye
reaches the large text at the bottom, this makes the
consumer know what the issue will be about. Then
lastly the eye reaches the barcode and issue number.
This is deliberately placed last because it will make the
consumer decide whether to buy the issue or not.
In my opinion I think my magazine was very successful because it fits perfectly into my genre and I think it
passes off as a high end feeling and looking magazine. Also if my magazine was in store with other real
magazines then I think it would fit in and not look odd or handmade.
Strengths
I think that I have got a lot of strengths in my work which include:
• The colours- because I feel like they really go together and all fit in any season of the year. I love that they
make a fantastic base for my photo and writing and are not too vibrant or look tacky.
• The photos- because they are a really good quality and my model fits into my genre and theme perfectly.
Also I feel like I have edited them to a high quality e.g. to give them a friendly feel and so they look quite
ambient. In addition I like how the front cover image appears quite edgy and casual because it makes the
magazine instantly have personality.
• The title font- because it really stands out from the page and is very unique. Also it is quite interactive for
the reader because they have to really stare at it to work out the letters because they look sunken into the
page. This in turn makes readers more drawn to the magazine.
• The name- because I feel like it really has got meaning behind it. Also it intrigues people who are into
fashion and art because the name has ART in it. As well as this the name flows when you say it and
because it is very unique (because there are no other magazine named ARTSIE) it makes the name stick
into your head meaning there would be more sales.
Weaknesses
I think I have got a few weaknesses because every magazine will have down points to it no matter what, mine
are:
• The writing is very simple and straight to the point on the front cover which could make the reader not have
enough detail to buy the magazine because they feel like it will not benefit them.
• The writing on the double page spread because the reader may not want to know what Alice's style is or
the article may not inspire or interest them in anyway.
• I haven't included many features that will directly interest my target audience because I have only relied on
the overall image of the magazine to intrigue them. However in my opinion it is really hard to appeal to a
target audience because everyone that comes under the target age all have different tastes and are into
different things. This makes it difficult to put so much variety into the magazine without it looking messy and
cluttered. I tried to just fit in with the genre and put a lot of different fashion styles in to make my magazine
more suitable for my target audience.

  • 11. Type: General magazine (fashion, beauty, lifestyle and advice) Publisher: Prisma Press Target audience: Women between the ages of 20-55 Prima effectively appeals to their target audience because they usually use more feminine based colours like pinks and purples, which usually attracts the eyes of women. This magazine uses famous celebrities usually between the ages 20-55 to match the target audience so that they are more relatable. Prima always include on their magazines a large, bold title which is always in the same font on each cover, this is to make the magazine brand more recognisable to its readers. Also Prima magazine uses images of celebrities heads, facing forwards to catch the attention of the reader on all of their magazines. On the front cover they also include anchorage text to appeal to their audience, using catchy words or a short sentence . For example on this magazine issue it states 'Anything is possible‘, more common ones they use are 'fabulous' or 'omg'. Type: Specialist magazine (football) Publisher: James Bandy Target audience: Teenagers and pre-teens Match! appeals to its target market because it uses language that the younger generation will understand, more and the things that are included in the magazine like posters are more for the younger generation. The magazine is more picture based than informative, because teenagers don’t have (an attention span as long as adults) so the Match! magazine includes just enough info, but the magazine is more visual to appeal to their target audience. It includes the same criteria as the Prima magazine but everything is more based around football and not lots of different topics.
  • 12. Type: Specialised magazine (music) Publisher: John J Kilcullen Target Audience: 16-26 Billboard appeals to their readers because they have a very colourful magazine, for example the title has a very unique design where the 'B, O, A and D' has the colours red, green, blue and yellow, this is very eye-catching and recognisable for the reader. Due to these colours being very bright. In my opinion that appeals more to younger audiences then older, because darker colours are viewed as more mature. All the images on the front of the billboards magazines are famous musicians who are similar ages to the target audience, which means they are more likely to enjoy their music. Also to make the artist more recognisable, Billboard uses their name as the anchorage text, so it stands out to advertise the person who is on that particular issue. Each of their issues are different colours depending who they think will be more interested in the music in that particular issue. For example on this one are all shades of pink which would be mostly used to capture women, because their is a female musician on the front cover.
  • 13. From the magazines that I have researched, which are mainly high end of the fashion genre, they have a large image on the front of the cover usually a celebrity that covers most of the page. They usually have very limited writing on the front, just a few words or a phrase. They appeal massively to the younger generation e.g. teenagers and young adults. They have a very modern and urban theme to them and they look very sleek and clean cut. The magazines are usually priced in the region of £4-£8. The ones that I have been researching are in the middle of this pricing bracket because they are very well known, contain high end fashion, and display the high end look through their magazines.

  • 15. The masthead is located on the left side of the cover and has been rotated round to be on its side. Due to this the writing looks like a smiley face winking, which is the main trade mark for this magazine and is why it looks so recognisable. The winking face is meant to make the magazine seem more youthful and cheeky, to grab the attention of their target audience. The masthead is very simplistic because their magazines are very well known and are easily recognisable, so they don't need a very detailed and really colourful design to catch peoples attention. Also this type of magazine is usually subscribed for every month so they don’t need much detail to grab people. The cover lines on this issue are arranged in a sequence which resembles steps. These are going down which could suggest continuity because its the idea that steps carry on. Also the words used are very short and simple words but are very effective to the average person. Also they are so simplistic they attract more people because the magazine uses their kind of language. The word beautiful and easy makes people want to read on to see what they apply to. I-D always uses vague, short, simple and catchy words on their covers to engage their audience to make them want to read on and buy the magazine. The background colour on this magazines really defines the model on the front and all the bits of writing. The colours have been kept very monochrome with the grey background, the black detailing and white writing. These neutral colours have been kept very simple because they are meant to highlight the detailed pop of colour on her eye which conveys a message to everyone. In my own opinion I think the message is that everyone one is beautiful inside even if they have a very boring and simple look on the outside. This is shown by the colours escaping out of her eye and dripping down her face. The barcode and price has been included on the front of this magazine cover. This is because it shows clearly all the information the readers will need to buy this magazine. All of the writing and the barcode have been placed on the left side of the magazine because it makes it easier for the reader to process the details due to it all in one place and not dotted all around the cover. This is also because they want to free up space on the magazine so it looks a lot sleeker and more modern. I love the central image on this magazine because it looks very simple and attracts the attention of a lot more people, because she looks like an average women not a celebrity. Also because she is a female it indicates that this magazine issue is more aimed at female audiences. This magazine is very minimal and uncluttered the writing is limited to a few words and is quite small in size. On most ID magazines the main image dominates the page because this gives it a lot more of a cleaner look. It makes it seem more high end priced because there is not lots of detail on the front. The model on the front is wearing a very simple white top with no logos or detailing such as lace, this creates light and space because of the colour. This colour also makes her seem more innocent. Her accessory is a black quilted tote bag which is very fashionable so this attracts people who are into fashion and like her particular style. Her hair is very thick and voluminous which adds depth to the magazine, the colour of her hair is light brown which is a very average hair colour. The models make-up is very natural looking which has been done so the accessory on her eye stands out from the page. The position of her body is side ways but her face is facing towards you with her eyes ready to catch eye contact with anyone who looks at the cover. This is a great selling feature because the buyer feels like they have a connection and relate to the model which makes them more likely to buy the issue. She also has black nail varnish on which continues the monochrome feeling to the colour scheme.
  • 16. The title is located right at the top of the page which is very easy to notice/see in between other magazines on the shelves in the shop. It is very unique to the average magazine title which is usually black or one whole colour. This title is a mixture of colours i.e. blue, purple and red. This makes the title look very unique and with elements of fun and excitement due to it bursting with colours. The shape of the font is very simplistic, there are no little details such as swirls or patterns which correspond with the edgy fun side of the colours. The title of this magazine is obviously well know because the model on the front of the magazine is covering part of the title, and this suggests that the magazine is very recognizable and doesn’t need the full title to be clearly shown to their target audience. The main image is a female model which shows that this type of magazine is targeted more at females then males because there is a relatable female on the front. She is also very well known, so this means that people that love her are more likely to buy this issue because they want to see if she is inside the magazine as well as on the front. From what she is wearing you can see that this is a more edgy and alternative magazine because she is wearing very monochrome clothes with skulls on which suggest they have styled her to look quite gothic and quirky. She looks like she is lying down which is very unusual position for the front cover so this makes it more unique and exciting. Cara Delevingne who is on this front cover has been made to look like she is waking up on a bed of teddy bears which is very unusual because the front covers on average are very simplistic and they just have the models face staring at the reader but this one is very different in many ways. On LOVE magazines they always position the barcode in the bottom left corner on the side. This is because they don’t want to draw attention to the barcode, due to it having to be on the magazine In order to purchase it. Having the barcode there also suggests that you can buy this magazine in the shops because if it was subscription only then it wouldn’t have a barcode because it would not need one. There is a very wide range of colours used on this magazine more then the more simple covers. There is a mixture of very bright, fun and vibrant colours like the purple and green but there is also a lot of monochrome, there is more white than black, because black would make the cover look very dark and then the vibrant colours could not show up as good as they do with the white. Due to the colours being very bright and airy it attracts people to the magazine. Especially if it was next to one which was more simple looking. These types of colours appeal more to teenagers and a younger audience maybe 16- mid 20’s, because the colours are very bright which reflects the stereotypical young personality. The background of this magazine cover is very different because usually the backgrounds are one solid colour like white or blue. But on this cover it is a continuous image of teddy bears. To break up this they have added colored objects such as the purple handbag on the left hand side. This background looks very effective on this particular cover because the monochrome colours really make it look less busy. You would think that the amount of colours and images on this magazine would look too much and overpowering but in fact it doesn’t, it looks very neat and works together really well. The anchorage text is ‘AWAKE GIRL’ which strongly suggests that this magazine is targeted at the younger female market because it has the word girl in it. Also they have included the name of the model which is Cara Delevingne, which will make people who like her want to buy the magazine/be attracted to it. The font of the text looks like it has been doodled which gives it quiet a personal touch and makes it more appealing to younger audiences. All of the letters are in capitals which makes it stand out of the page because it looks very important. It is placed at the bottom of the page and takes up a quarter of the page which is very different to the normal anchorage text because it is usually very small and isn’t very attention seeking to the audience.
  • 17. There is lots of information on this page which makes the pages easily found and accessed by the readers. Due to everything being clearly written down it makes it more appealing to the reader. All the page numbers have been clearly written in a bigger font to be more eye-catching for the reader. Above the explanation on the contents there is a sentence to intrigue the reader into turning to that particular page. These phrases are very short and snappy which get to the point easily for example pg474 'Mr Right'. This a very simple and short phrase which makes people want to know more and for it to play on their emotions. There is no title stating ‘contents’ page - just the name and logo of the magazine. This is to continue to show that it is Elle magazine to new and potential viewers. This looks very minimalist and simple because it is also black which adds depth to the page and goes with the background. The title also fits with the modern and fashion theme running through this magazine. Even though the background looks quite cluttered to some people, in my personal opinion I think it looks very stylish and it shows everything that will be included in the magazine, which will make people very interested into reading on. All the colours in the background go really well with each other even though there is a whole collage of photos. Under each page number there is information about what is on that page. This is to make people intrigued as to what the page looks like and all detail that could be on there. They also show that they have posters to make people want to get the magazine because their favourite celebrity might be on the poster. Mostly all of Elle magazine contents look like this, but all of the different issues have different backgrounds to make them look more individual to that theme for that particular magazine. The colours on this magazine contents page are very random and don’t have any obvious connection between them all. In my opinion they really go together and look very modern and suit the fashion genre of this magazine. The white and black compliment the pink/coral tones in the pictures and there are added colours which are less noticeable, for example like the royal blue and vibrant green in the bottom left photo.
  • 18. The title contents is in a very big, bold lettering which has been placed at the top of the page to make sure people know what the page is about. There is a lot of text on this page then more high end magazine contents due to this being out of a high street magazine. All the subheadings and headings are in the same colour and font which makes them stand out from the page. The text has been sectioned into different areas such as lifestyle and fashion, this is to make the text effective because people can look exactly what pages fashion is on. The font that has been used for the main text is just a very simple and a stereotypical font often used in a magazine as the main writing. The writing has been organized into columns and this makes the page look very neat and it creates more space on the page. The contents have been displayed across two pages making the contents look very full throughout. It also makes the reader think they are getting a lot for their money due to there being more things to read about in the magazine. The date has been put under the title to make it easily noticeable for the reader so they know how recent the magazine issue is and if the contents are worth reading. For example; recent gossip or latest trends. Have been put in a box to stand out from the title . The colours are very random and don't really have any similarities between them; particularly when looking at them and comparing them. They seem quite autumnal colours like the oranges and reds. The colours that are involved with this magazine are darker and more stylish looking colours. They look like they are targeted at older women from the ages of 30-55 because of the way its styled and the use of words on this page. These two pages are not really sticking to a colour scheme such as monochrome or pastels it is quite random, but in my opinion it works for this kind of high street magazine because on average none of them keep to a particular colour scheme. There is a vast amount of images on this page which is very different to other contents pages, this means this magazine is very visual but there is a lot of text as well. This is unique because there are usually more images than text. There are a variety of pictures from different pages from the magazine scattered over the two contents pages. These are there to persuade people to go to those pages. Unlike other magazines this magazine looks quite cluttered and random because in my opinion all the pictures look very out of place and the pages don’t really flow together- they look very mishmash. Some of the pictures match the page such as the women and the ocean cause-way picture. These go together because they match the genre of fashion/lifestyle, look very professional and as though they belong there (they don’t look like they clutter the page asit does now with the added
  • 19. I love the typography on this double page spread because it gives real depth to the page due to the 3 dimensional style of bubble writing. The colours on this title really stand out from the page because the orange is really piercing and catches your attention straight away. The off white/grey colour really compliments the orange to make the lettering stand out. Also due to this title going across both the pages it brings them together to make them seem continuous and very urban looking. The phrase ‘picture this’ really relates to what this page is showing, which is two similar photos. The wording makes you imagine these pictures in real life because its using commanding language. Due to this it really involves the reader into the page and makes them feel like they are at the place pictured. I know that the title is the main focus for these pages because it slightly overlays the photographs. The reader then thinks this is what your meant to view first. On the left page the only info is at the top placed right in the corner, there is only limited writing and it is in a very small font. This makes people presume that the writing isn’t very important because it is just in the corner and not in massive letters. There isn’t very much writing because the images speak louder then words which means it doesn’t need lots of info because it doesn’t make much of an impact on the page itself. The picture on the left is located on the top half of the page and is the biggest picture out of the two involved with the layout. The colours in the pictures fit in well with the colours being presented on the page- for example: the Chinese style lettering is an orange tone matching the title. Also the black and off white match the background of the page. The other image on the right page is located on the top half of the page but is a lot smaller then the other photo. The photos have been colour coordinated to that particular page to fit with the background colour. For example- the picture of the door is mainly white, so it has been placed on the white page. On the opposite picture inside the building, the colours are mainly black, meaning it has been placed on the black background page. This is because it makes the pages flow better due to the colours coordinating and not contrasting. There are two background colours on this double page spread which look as though they separate the layout into two individual pages, instead of one page flowing to the next. Because of the clever organisation of everything on the page it looks as one. Even though the background consists of two different shades, black and white. This gives a monochrome look to the pages and creates a base for all the other aspects shown such as the title. This double page spread is very urban looking and modern because of the graffiti like lettering in the title, and the pictures of the urban and sleek looking building. The colours are very striking and are in-keeping with the modern theme with these pages.
  • 20. The writing is organized very neatly on this page into columns and blocks. There are two columns on the left side in the middle and there are two clumps of text at the bottom and top of the page. This looks very aesthetically pleasing to the eye because is very neatly placed and is symmetrical. There is quite a lot of text on this page but because it is separated into sections and has been placed to create space, it seems like there is minimal text even though there isn’t. Also there are quite a few words in bold throughout the texts which makes the reader attracted to those words first because they stand out from the page. There are no special fonts used in the text just the normal Ariel font. In keeping with the minimal look this page includes 3 pictures to break up the writing so it isn’t too heavy looking. These three photos are a mixture between colour, black and white tones, this is to make the page look more varied and exciting. This page looks very neat and planned out because it is all sectioned into nice aesthetically looking pieces. I really love how they have used different sizes of pictures on this page to fit the gaps because it makes the page look bigger and more airy. The pure white background really frames all the writing and pictures. This double page spread looks very simple but it is very effective in many ways to attract their target audience because it has been designed to look neat but very quirky. The colours on this page are very minimal and have been kept to greys blacks and white with added colour from the two images on the left page. These colours are very simple but are very effective, because the slight colour in the picture stands out and makes the reader attracted to it. The more monochrome colours add an edgy and stylish feeling to the double page spread. This page looks very unique and unusual to the eye because the picture under the girl looks like the lower half of a bulldog, which makes the girl seem like she is half dog half human which is very unusual for a fashion magazine. This makes it so unique and needs someone to look at it for a while to actually understand what the picture represents and means it draws the reader in due to its quirkiness. I really like how the picture fills the whole page because it makes the picture the center/focus point for the page. Also I love how the picture looks like it has been ripped into two because it makes it look really edgy and adds definition to the page. The woman in the picture is looking directly at the reader, which makes the reader enticed into her stare, this encourages them to want to read the page to see what her style of clothing means and what the whole picture represents.
  • 21. This typography is very bright and stands out massively from the page due to it looking 3 dimensional. The font is very rounded and soft making it look very neat and it goes well with the page. The 3 dimensional look of this title really brings definition to the page. The title slightly covers the image which suggests that it is the main focus for the page because it is overlaying everything. The position and shape of the title is very unique from other magazines because it is curved over two pages, which really makes the pages flow together and look like one piece. In my opinion I think by looking at this page, this magazine is targeted at young females, maybe of the age 15-25, because the title looks very bright and vibrant. Also it looks quite urban which will attract more of the younger generation. The colours that have been used on this double page spread are very vibrant and vivid such as the pinks and blues/teals. I think they go really nicely together and just make the whole page look like one. This looks like it is out of a fashion magazine because all the colours show this, due to them being very coordinated and not random. The colours suggest that the magazine is aimed at females because they are very muted not bold looking, which shows that it is aimed at the ages of 16-28. Also the pinks and lilacs give this away too. Due to the majority of the page being white it really frames the images, text and title because it looks very clean and sleek. The colours in the title are very blocky and remind me of 60’s fashion due to the colours being opposites on the colour spectrum. There are only six large images on the left page this is to make room for the amount of text on the right page. The images are very colourful and match the whole look of the page which is vibrant and urban. The images look very professional and good quality which adds class to the page. They are arranged very neatly in this grid/collage with the same size gaps in-between each photo. Even though they are all different sizes they still look very stylish and high end because they all fit into the fashion genre theme and they go with the whole page very nicely. The images cover most of the left page which suggests that they are very important and have been added there for a big effect. The pictures all fit in with the fashion genre such as the nails and makeup and the clothing towards the top but with edgy vibes such as the buildings and This double page spread has a lot more text than the average high-end magazine. The text fills most of the right hand page but the typography does slightly go over the top of the page. The text is in a very small size and the font is very simplistic just the normal body text font. The text is separated into paragraphs leaving a cm gap in between each one. This is to make the text feel easier to read for the consumer and to prevent the page from looking too heavy and dense. There are just enough gaps to create the feeling of space and room which makes the page look very simplistic and modern. It is displayed in columns which makes the writing look organised, due to this it gives the reader the opportunity to feel more confident reading the information because they know it has thought behind it.
  • 22. I like this colour pallet because its very simple but effective. The colour of the brick wall which is a very burnt red really compliments the complexion of the women on the cover. These colours remind me of the autumn season because the colours reflect the transition from summer with the bright pink writing to Autumn/winter with the dark black and blue colours. Due to these colours it makes this magazine look very modern and urban which attracts their target market which is young adults. I really like these colours because it is a very different combination to use bright pastels mixed into a dark ambient background, which is not seen on many magazines. The pastels which have been carefully styled on the woman make her stand out from the page and make her image very eye catching for people who look at it. The background colours really compliment the bright pastels because it creates a subtle and quiet background for the loud bright pastels. Even though there are a lot of colours on this magazine I believe that they all work and I wouldn’t change the colour scheme at all.
  • 23. This colour scheme is very simple which most magazines tend to use because it is the easiest to get right and appeals to everyone's taste. They have carefully used earthy tones such as browns and creams to create a very daring and edgy base for the bright orange which adds so much passion and thought into the cover. This magazine cover looks very effective and gives off different meanings to people because of the colours. For example it gives off a slight retro/vintage feel to me because of the tone of orange and the browns which makes it look very worn. This colour scheme is very risky and bold due to their being lots of fluorescents used in large amounts. In my opinion out of all the magazines colour pallets this one has the most feminine pallet due to their being lots of different tones of pink on the cover which is stereotypically more a feminine colour. Also there is the lack of white on this magazine which is very unusual because white is used very heavily on magazines due to it being a very easy colour to coordinate with other colours.
  • 24. This colour scheme is the one which is used the most by every magazine company's, because red, white and black have been proven many times to go together and look amazing. This scheme gives the cover a very modern and sleek look with a slight edginess because in this case the pale background and her pale skin frames the black and white which makes the title pop out of the page. With only the models lips being red this in turn makes them the focal point on the magazine. Red is the only colour used and as a result makes this a stand alone colour. Even though this magazine has very small range of colours it looks extremely bold and crazy due to there being fluorescent orange and yellow being placed together on a dark to light ombre background. These are very daring colours to put together but in my opinion I think they work perfectly together because they reflect the bold and bright personality of Miley Cyrus. I don’t think these colours fit any kind of season because they are neither summer colours or winter. Due to the colour choice I think this magazine looks quite masculine with the blacks and oranges.
  • 25. I love this font because it is very thick and blocky which makes a massive statement on any magazine. I love how the fonts are arranged with the second word going down the side of the other because it creates a lot of space. The font is very bold and simple but gives off a very edgy and cool look. It hasn’t got any little bits of detail such as swirls but I think the font doesn’t need these extra touches because it looks effective already. However the only thing I don’t like is that it is not very unique because a lot of these types of fashion magazines have a very simple bold, blocky font like this. This font really caught my eye because it is very unique and detailed which means it would look extremely effective on a magazine cover. I love how it looks 3 dimensional due to it being outlined very heavily, this means it would stand out of the page and also bring depth into the magazine. This font looks very indie due to it not being very blocky, it has a lot more of a softer look to it than some that are very bold and thick. I love the harshness of this font because it makes a very big impact due to it looking quite edgy and evil. I love how there are some thin parts to this font and some thick parts. It makes it look very unique to other fonts and gives it depth but still looks quite dainty and soft on a magazine because of the thin parts. This font is very bold and striking to their audience, it is in capitals so it is grabbing attention because capitals are usually used when shouting something which makes people more aware. This font looks handwritten due to it being joined up and there being no gaps between each letter which I really love because it gives a personal touch to the magazine cover. It looks like it has been handwritten just for you, which is really effective to make people buy the magazine. I love how simple it is. Due to the handwritten look it flows more because it is joined up and has no gaps which make it fit in more with the magazine cover. The font is in bold which adds edge and character into it, but not as much as some, it is just enough to be eye catching.
  • 26. I love how this font is a lot smaller in height then the other fonts I have chosen this because it looks more unique. This font is very simple and there are no little details on it. It looks very indie/alternative due to the letters not being in capitals and the overall effect it gives. However, I feel like this font is too simple for the kind of feel I want my magazine to have, because it uses the same style as many other magazines use which means it wouldn’t make a big enough impact for my cover. I love the overall look of this font because it looks very edgy and detailed but also having a very soft and rounded effect because the majority of letters are curved. I love the little points off the edges of the letters because it makes all the letters flow together and adds depth to the font. This font is quite unique but still simplistic at the same time because it has elements of average magazine fonts, but also has added unique extras which make the font more stylish and effective. I love the colours involved with this font because it makes it look very fun and stylish. The dripping effect looks very indie and would fit into my genre. It adds an unique edge because not many fonts have this feature. I think when this is on a magazine the dripping will really highlight the font on the cover and not make it look out of place like some may. Also it looks very 3 dimensional which will be more eye catching to their target audience. However I think the colours may be hard to style on the magazine cover because they are complex and may not coordinate with the feature picture. If I had this font it would be either one block colour or two coordinating colours. This font looks quite similar to the second one on this page but is a little thinner in thickness and the ‘e’ has been rotated slightly to give a focus point in the title. I love that this font looks very classic and stylish but also it is very effective to get points across. All the letters are in capitals except the ‘e’ which makes the font look unique to any others with the similar edgy style as this one. However I have taken inspiration from this font because I love how one of the letters is different to all the others. It makes people look at it for longer due to them being interested as to why one letter is in a different style.

My magazine will be published every month with a new issue and will be sold in high streets shops and supermarkets, but will mainly be a subscription based magazine. The amount of pages will be between 60-80 pages because I want it to be quite a long read but I want quality over quantity. I will use modern/urban/edgy colours to make my magazine stand out from every magazine that has my same genre, so it will be the favourite type of fashion magazine which means more sales. My magazine will include lots of indie/alternative fashion styles, different and exaggerated make-up products and looks, also some lifestyle pieces but my magazine will be mostly fashion based because that is my genre.

By researching my target audience in detail I now know how to make my magazine more appealing to them so it is more popular in the fashion market. I know what the average teenage girl likes and dislikes so I can reflect the good in my magazine not the bad so it attracts their attention. I now know that every girl has a different and unique fashion style and I want to reflect all the different types in my magazine to give them inspiration and ideas into how they can change or better their style. I will do this by placing lots of different high quality photos into the magazine with lots of different styles within my genre.
  • 29. These are some of the fonts that I really like the idea of for my own magazine. Some are quite blocky and bold but most of them look handwritten and flow. I gathered all of these fonts off 1001 fonts.com. I wanted to see what fonts were on offer for my magazine and to do a lot of research into what I think would make a statement. Also what would
  • 30. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/?sm=zmSRSHPenwbyu8T0_2FFVJ FfQltnTCMO_2F9b6z28JNdkyY_3D All my responses were female which means this research is very accurate and reliable because my target audience is females and not males. From this survey I can see what brands are liked most and include them into my magazine. The ones which were chosen the most are: • Topshop • Urban Outfitters • Converse • Vans The brands which were chosen but not as highly as the others are: • Nike • Levis The brand which wasn’t chosen at all was Zara so I will not be including this in my research because the survey proves that Zara is not very popular.
  • 31. From this survey it shows that the people who answered my questions were between the ages 15-24 - which is my target market. These results will be helpful to make my magazine be perfect. This will then enable me to pick the correct fashion styles for the age ranges shown here. All the fashion styles were equally chosen. From this I now know that I will include different sections on each of these styles when making my magazine-to please everyone. I will also include other aspects of fashion such as high end because having more styles will appeal to more people when the magazine is published. From doing this survey I now know that people are more open to different styles because all the options were chosen. Also I know that it wouldn’t be a massive risk to include other areas of fashion such as the high end market.
  • 32. .8 people said they would buy Wonderland magazine and 3 people each said that they would ‘never’, ‘not really’ and ‘yes every week’ buy this type of magazine. This information makes me want to make my magazine better than Wonderland issues because I want every one to be between ‘sometimes’ and ‘yes every week’ for my own magazine. This survey has helped me take aspects of Wonderland magazine, but change a lot of it to suit more of my target market. From this survey it shows that most people spend between 8-10 pound on a fashion magazine. Taking this into consideration I think I will price mine around the 5-7 pound mark because taking into consideration the age of my target market, I want it to be affordable but still classed as high end style. This in turn will ensure people feel that satisfaction when buying it. I know that not as many people chose the 5-7 on the survey but I want my magazine to be different and appeal to anyone's budget.
  • 33. The majority of people wanted pictures so I will ensure that my magazine is mostly picture based but with limited text because a few people still wanted text. I will only include some advertising but not as much as some magazines like ID because people get bored of advertising and they don’t like it which reflects on the survey. I will definitely not include any posters because people think they can make a magazine look very cheap and tacky and this is conveyed in the survey because no one chose The most popular colours which were chosen were white and black, so I will ensure that they will be included on the front cover of my magazine. The second most popular was metallics which I will probably try to include on my cover because a lot of people seemed to like the idea of metallics on the front. Other popular colours were blue, purple, red, pink and yellow which I will definitely choose a couple to complement the white, black and metallics. The colours which I will not be using are brown, orange and green because these colours will not attract my target audience because none of them were chosen.
  • 34. When designing my cover I will take these results into account because they will help me plan the most appealing magazine for my target audience. I will not include a lot of text on the front, maybe just a few effective words or phrases to catch the audience and keep them wanting to read on. Also I will either have a collection of images on the front or a very simple model with an aspect of mystery to make the audience excited for what is going to happen inside the magazine. From these responses my target audience would like to see latest trends and high end and high street things as well as other things that are shown on the survey. This survey is very useful because it will help me to decide on what to put into the magazine and what different sections there could be through out. Also I can include these so then I can definitely attract my target audience because I will be including things they would want to see in a fashion magazine.
  • 35. From my research on Uk Tribes I have decided that my target audience are in the leading edge category, mainly ‘Indie Scenesters’ who are always ahead of the trend and create new trends by mixing lots of different styles together to make their own new style. I have chosen this genre because I feel like I can really meet their fashion values well when producing my magazine, for example mixing lots of different styles together to then produce an individual one. Taking my target audience into consideration I will be focusing on brands such as urban outfitters, American Apparel, Phix and Adidas which are all high end and are the style that I am going for. All the clothes that they stock are conceived as ahead of the curve and High fashion.
  • 36. Price Background image Model Catchy Phrase/Words Barcode Name of model Important info Title: Artsie This is a very simple flat plan of my front cover that I have hand drawn. I have only included the simplistic features such as the title but I haven't put detail into it such as fonts and colours. I have done this because it will help me to set everything out correctly and in a stylish way, but also it will make sure I wont forget any little details such as the barcode.
  • 37. Date Effective words describing what’s on the page Page numbers Magazine name and issue Title: Contents Image from one of the pages Background image This is the flat plan for my contents page, I have made a feature pattern in the middle which is the triangular sequence design including images from the pages of the magazine. This is to make people excited about the ongoing pages. I really like this design because it looks very simplistic but it also looks very detailed and stylish.
  • 38. Title: What is her style? Large image of Alice Main body of text in columns Image Collection of images and writing Writer and photographer names Date and page number This is a very simple flat plan of my double page spread of how everything will be laid out and placed. I have included boxes that will be replaced with pictures and writing. I have chosen this layout because I feel like it really looks very nice and even looking. I have done this because I can make sure everything on my double page spread is placed in the right positions and so I know what to include in the finished piece.
  • 39. The eye moves from the logo ID through the colourful motif on the models eye to the background which reinforces the brand. Then down through the slogan writing which makes the consumers captured by the clever use of words on the magazine. Then through the model to the barcode and price which makes the consumer make a decision if they want to buy the magazine. Then finally the eye moves past the bottom of the image of the model. This magazine is very simple and is mainly focused on the brand logo and the image of the model, which means they don’t really put anything of importance on their cover. They make them have a simplistic and clean look meaning there isn’t much to pull in the reader by using the Z eye movement compared to magazines such as Elle. The consumer focuses on her neck and shoulder which connotes the fact that ID magazine don’t really apply hotspots to their covers because there is nothing that is of a massive importance, due to there not being anything unusual or eye catching in the rectangle. However there may have thought about the colours because in the hotspot there are different colours such as white, black and silver. The hotspot also includes a little bit of the anchorage which highlights the fact the model and the anchorage are the main features of this magazine. Usually magazines use the models face for the hotspot to draw in the consumer if they are well known, but with this cover the model is not famous. In my opinion they didn’t want to use her face because she is not easily recognizable to the public meaning they wont be as easily drawn in. Also I think they have purposely placed this hotspot there to make the cover look very neat and mysterious
  • 40. The eye moves over the logo WONDERLAND which reinforces the brand because that is the first thing the consumers see on the front of magazine. It also shows them what kind of magazine it will be because if they know the brand wonderland, then they know that it will be fashion genre. Then the eye moves through the barcode which will make them want to buy the magazine because it is the second thing they see. Then the eye moves through the text on the right, which makes the consumer get a little insight of what the magazine will be like. This makes them more likely to buy the magazine. The eye crosses over the model on the front of the magazine which means because her face is facing forwards, it attracts the consumer to buy the magazine. The eye then moves to who is in the magazine e.g. Lana Del Rey. This makes people more likely to buy the magazine from looking at this because if someone really likes these celebrities on the magazine then they will buy it. Lastly the eye moves across the anchorage text which is placed towards the bottom middle of the magazine, which persuades the consumer because it is a phrase which makes the consumer think and will usually end up with them buying it. This magazine is a very good example of the Z eye movement on a magazine because it shows very clearly that the eye moves through all the important pieces of information on the cover of the magazine. From this magazine cover I now know that Wonderland takes into account the z eye movement when creating their covers. This really is effective with this magazine because everything the eye moves through is relevant and adds a lot to the magazine. Also because of this it has lots of persuasion so it gets consumers to make their purchase. The consumer focuses on the models neck and clothes with a little bit of her face. This connotes that Wonderland magazine have purposely done this because in the focus point there are a lot of colours and textures. Colours are used a lot on magazines to make the covers eye-catching and to attract new consumers who haven't heard of their brand. These colours are very vibrant and are not unusual colours to be shown all together, but because of this they stand out when put next to other magazines. But other then the amount of colours there isn’t really anything of massive importance which highly suggests that wonderland magazine do not really think about the point of focus massively but do a little due to that being a very colourful part of the magazine. Based on this I think the magazines target audience is young females between the ages of 16-25 because of the colours used on the point of focus on the cover. Due to clothes being in the hotspot it shows to the reader that this magazine is a fashion magazine because usually the models face or writing is the point of focus. Obviously Wonderland wanted to clearly show that this magazine issue is very colourful and involves unusual fashion items.
  • 41. The consumer focuses on the face of the model and the colours. This conveys that the model is the main focus for this magazine. Inside the hotspot rectangle there is both her eyes, her nose and her mouth. Due to it being ID magazine the model has one eye closed and this is shown in the rectangle to the consumers so the hotspot is not only showing the models facial expressions but is also reinforcing the closed eye trademark. This is used widely over all their magazines. So consumers will look at this cover and will instantly know that it is ID magazine and if they like ID this will make them buy the issue. The point of focus is directly in the middle of the magazine cover which shows that ID have really thought about the placement of everything on their cover. Also in the point of focus there are clearly two colours pink and orange, these are very vibrant and bright, they make the magazine very stylish and this is shown very clearly in the rectangle. The models eye is facing right towards the consumer inside the hotspot which is used on almost every magazine because the way she is looking instantly connects eyes with the consumer who feels like they have made a connection. This is a great selling point to get them to buy the magazine issue. Due to the models lips being slightly open it looks like she is ready to make conversation which is also a great thing to connect with the reader. If there was another magazine with a model looking the opposite way and that was in the hotspot then the consumer would definitely choose this magazine compared to the The eye moves through the ID logo which reinforces the brand just like most magazines do because they want to sell their brand to consumers. The eye moves across through the models forehead to the comb which is being brushed through her hair. This makes the consumer easily know that this magazine is based on makeup and fashion because this kind of image wouldn’t be placed onto a football magazine. By going across with their eye the consumer will pick out all the bright and vibrant colours showing that the magazine issue is very fun and appeals to them if they are in their target market. Then the eye moves down through the models face seeing her facial expressions and her details. Further down you then can see the anchorage text which is very clearly shown in white bold letters. This makes the consumer gather what the magazine is going to be like or whom it involves inside. This is another good place to put the text in the z movement because it makes the consumer want to buy the issue so they can find more about what happens inside the magazine. The eyes then reach the barcode carefully placed at the bottom left on the cover. This makes the consumer make a decision on whether to buy the magazine or not. This is a well thought out place to put the barcode towards the end of the Z movement because it gives the consumer enough time to take in everything else on the magazine not just rush them into a quick decision. The eye moves along the bottom of the magazine cover which gives them another chance to look at the main image which is the model on the front of the magazine.
  • 42. The consumer focuses on the models face and a little bit of the anchorage text. This conveys that the model is the main focus for the magazine. The model looks very pale and her eyes, nose and mouth are in the hotspot. This is a very predictable hotspot for this type of magazine because the model image is the main/biggest thing filling the cover, so it is usually made the main focus. The only colours in the hotspot are black (from her lipstick) white (from the text) and pale skin colour (from her face). These colours are quite unusual for the hotspot because magazines use very bright and vibrant colours for the hotspot to catch the consumers attention directly. This suggests to me that this magazine may be aimed at younger teenagers who are into more gothic/ alternative fashion due to the colour chose and style. The anchorage text is also slightly in the main point of focus which suggests that they want it to be seen easily on the magazine due to it being in a big font . When making the magazine, Dazed And Confused must have really thought about where to make the point of focus because they have placed it in a very good place to attract new and old consumers to their magazines. In my opinion I wouldn’t place the hotspot anywhere else because the effect of the placement. At the minute is very genius and if you changed it, it wouldn’t have as much of an impact on consumers. The eye moves through the title/brand of the magazine which is DAZED AND CONFUSED. This is placed right at the top of the magazine in very big letters. Because this is the start point of the Z movement it conveys what the magazine will be if the consumer knows the brand well, if not it reinforces the brand. Next the eye moves right through the middle of the models face which suggest to me that dazed and confused use the Z movement on their magazines because they have everything placed perfectly within the Z eye movement. When the eye goes across the models face it show them what kind of magazine this is because you can tell what she is wearing and how the image has been styled to fit in within a certain genre i.e. this is fashion. Then the eye moves down to the main text on the page. This makes the consumer understand the theme that is going to be in the magazine or who the magazine is aimed at. It also makes people know if they want to buy the magazine or not because the big text describes what kind of atmosphere the magazine will have, which will make them decide if they want to buy it. The eye then goes across the model again but it goes to her hair which has lots of writing on, this makes consumers interested in what it says because it is very unusual for a high-end magazine to have this much writing. This is a big selling point because people will like to see individuality as most magazines follow the same rules and patterns but in some ways this magazine does but in others it doesn’t, such as the eyes not moving through all the text which is shown on the cover of the magazine.
  • 43. The consumer focuses on the bag which says MILEY on. This connotes that Miley the celebrity singer is the main focus because the bag with her name on is the hotspot for the consumer. V magazine have purposely done this because they know that Miley has a very big following. When the consumer sees the Miley bag, if they like Miley or they don’t know who she is but want to see more of her, then they will more than likely buy the magazine then if there was a random model as the main image. From the hotspot I can tell that Miley is the main focus/image for the magazine issue. The bright orange colour on the bag is clearly shown in the rectangle which V magazine have purposely added to attract consumers attention. Bright vivid colours are a very easy way to include in a magazine to attract consumers eyes as they are walking past. This conveys to me that this magazine is aimed at young adults because of the colour chooses- maybe between the ages of 18-30. I think for this magazine this was the best place to put the hotspot because it really catches peoples eyes when looking at the magazine. In my opinion from looking at this hotspot I presume that they take into account the placement of the point of focus when making their magazine because they have placed it in a very effective place. To change the effect of the magazine, V could have placed the main focus as Mileys face to draw in consumers because her eyes stand out very vividly from the page because they are a very bright vivid blue. The eye moves through the top part of the logo V which reinforces the brand (Most magazines make the logo the first thing people see because they want it to be well known and remembered). Next the eye moves across the main image which is the celebrity Miley. This makes the consumer want to buy the magazine if they like Miley, due to her being on the front of the magazine. Due to her hair being bright orange they want to know why her hair is that colour and what she is wearing, this is also a great selling point for the magazine. The eye then moves through the bag which is the main focus due to it being the biggest thing on the magazine cover. This also reinforces the celebrity Miley because it has her name written on it. This means people will be able to identify her rightly. Then the eye moves down through the text on the left explaining what the magazine is about e.g. Fashion. This also makes the consumer interested because from the front of the magazine you can not really identify what fashion style will be shown inside the magazine. Which will make the consumer interested for what's inside the magazine. Then it moves down to the number which states 83, this is the issue number so the consumer will look at this and know that they have made quite a lot of magazines. They will know that they are trustworthy and are maybe a good read which will make them very interested in buying the magazine. Lastly the eye moves along the bottom of the magazine to the other bit of text which also reinforces the celebrity. By looking at the Z movement I can now be sure that Z magazine think about this when making their magazine because everything lines up perfectly to grab the consumers attention.

  • 45. I used this image for the main picture on draft magazine, before I took my own photo. I choose this because I felt like the model really caught the attention of the audience, with her eyes being a very bright blue and her eyeliner being very dark. This creates a very dramatic look. I used this picture as guidance and inspiration for my own front cover image. I positioned my own model looking directly looking at the reader similar to this. However, this image really doesn’t go with my theme because my indie genre is more casual/informal and she is clothed in a very formal and posh outfit. I chose this image because it really relates to my double page spread. To make this my own image I edited a lot to make it fit in with all the colours on my page. I firstly got rid of the background and the women's body so it was just the legs. Then I rotated the image so the legs were coming from the top of the page. Also I edited the image lighter so it wasn’t as harsh as the original image is. I placed this image on my double page spread at the bottom of the right page. I chose this image because I feel like it really fits in with my fashion theme and its gives a personal feel to the page, due to it being a drawn image. I loved this because it looked really abstract and dramatic and gives the page an edgy look. I decided to not edit this massively because its already quite simple and effective, so I made it a little darker to add a little definition to the page. I chose this image because I feel that the blue rocks in the rings really complement the mom jeans on the page. Also these rings go with my theme perfectly because they are very fashionable. I edited this image by making it a little more darker because in my opinion the picture looks too light exposed, which makes the image look bad quality. I have found all these images off google images after typing in things like: Doc martin boots, fashion drawings, rings and magazine model.
  • 46. I chose this picture for my front cover because she is placed looking forward which made me think that her eyes would attract the target audience. I really liked the placement of her head because it makes the reader intrigued into the magazine because usually the models have a straight head facing forward. Alice's face looks really glowy and professional so that is what swayed me to choose this photo out of all the others, also the lighting is really high quality. This image really suits my theme of indie fashion out of all the others. Which made me want to present my best image on the front of the magazine because it will make it appeal to the audience. I styled her in these clothes for the photo because they are quite pale so they don’t take attention away from her face. Also the colours compliment each other because the blue in the top matches the mom jeans perfectly. Her makeup is very soft and natural because I wanted to draw attention to her cat eye flicks, clearly because that is in fashion right now. The lighting is very bright and ambient because I wanted it to reflect a welcoming and bright image for the front cover. I wanted her face to have a blank expression because I wanted it to intrigue the reader into wanting to read it. Her hair is slightly damp at the bottom which makes her look very urban and people view it as a person not a image. Also her body language portrays a friendly vibe to make the audience buy the magazine. I edited this image by getting rid of the background because it looks a lot more professional and sleek without the background. Also I edited her eyes more blue because I wanted them to stand out from the cover and connect with the target audience. In addition, I made the picture a little warmer to make it appear more welcoming and attractive. As well as this I have made the image a tiny bit lighter just to make it look effective on the front cover.
  • 47. I chose this picture for my double page spread because it really reflects the information on the page perfectly. Also it has a very casual vibe to it which makes it feel very welcoming. Her makeup is a little different to the front cover because I wanted it to look a little different but nothing drastic. I just added a bit of red lipstick to her face to make sure the background matches the model. In addition her hair is styled slightly differently to the front cover image which also makes the reader interested because there is more varied content in the magazine. The background really goes well with my theme because it gives a very indie vibe. Also it looks really natural which makes the picture have a personal feel to it. Her hand is placed across her face slightly to make it very casual and not too formal. Her head placement is the same as the picture on the front cover which makes them look similar so it keeps one theme running through the magazine. All the colours are very soft and don’t make a massive impression but they match into the overall colours in the magazine. This picture is more zoomed in then others because I really wanted to zoom into the features of Alice's face and so I can relate the picture to the text explained on the double page spread. I wasn’t inspired by any other pictures on double page spreads from magazines because I wanted to base the picture directly off my theme and what I have spoken about in my article. I edited this picture by also making her eyes more blue by taking the brush tool on Photoshop and using a light blue colour. To make this look very natural and unique I made the colour very sheer. I also changed the lighting slightly by making it a lot more warmer and lighter to brighten the image and make it look more ambient. The lightening appears very natural and really highlights her face which makes her look very healthy and like she has a glow to her.
  • 48. My target audience really likes the finished front cover because they think it fits in really well with the genre. The impression that they get off the cover is a welcoming and friendly vibe- this then encourages them to buy it. The reader loves the way all the text is set out and the effect it gives. Also they think the colours really coordinate and don’t clash and match every thing throughout the magazine. They think that the magazine is very well suited and crafted to their age range due to the young model and the type of words used. They can really relate to everything mentioned on the front cover because they are all topics and fashion styles that are in trend for this season and the next. They love the way everything is arranged simply which enables them to easily see what content the magazine will include. The typography is interesting and striking and really draws you in. The audience feels like they can really relate their life and style to this front cover, this then makes them feel inspired and to gather ideas and tips from it. They think that it also appeals to people who want to know more about a certain fashion and to change their style. MAGAZINE COVER
  • 49. CONTENTS They love how clearly the page is laid out and how simple it is to find they section they are interested in. the pictures on the side really makes the audience intrigued for the content on the page relating to the photo. They really like the way the photos have been arranged because they think it looks very stylish which links into the fashion genre perfectly. They love the colours because they all go together nicely but there is contrast as well between the bright vibrant and lively colours and the deep edgy and meaningful black and white photos. They love the flow of the title because it looks very classy and gives an urban feel to the page. Also they adore how the text is arranged into sections because it means they can go to the page they want in a quick way instead of flicking through the magazine trying to find the page they are looking for. The page gives off a very young and youthful vibe which makes the target audience very interested in the magazine. The hexagonal pattern appears very neat and concise, it also frames the page. This gives an airy because the pictures are very dense and draw attention. This is a massive contrast to the other side which is very clean and pure because it has no content on it.
  • 50. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD The audience really likes the clear title placed at the top of the page because it describes exactly what the page is going to include. The main picture is a good size depicting Alice in a thoughtful pose wearing her style of top, which gives the audience a small idea of what her style is. But then on the other page there are ideas of what she could be wearing there like the jeans which you cannot see in the photo. This makes the reader get outfit inspiration and know clearly how much everything is priced so they then can buy these items for themselves. Also the fashion items make the audience relate because these are very well known and are in fashion. I like how the title is a rhetorical question because it makes the reader want to find out the answer in the text. The audience loves how in text different occasions are mentioned meaning there is a lot of variety and the audience is more likely to take inspiration from the text written. They also like how there are not only fashion tips but there are also makeup and hair tips , i.e. they love the diversity of ideas given. The reader likes the numbers 123 because they think that in three easy steps the can achieve this look.
  • 51. EVALUATION In my opinion, my research into similar magazines was very effective because I started off finding out all the magazines titles that fit into my fashion genre e.g. wonderland and vogue. Then I gathered all the covers that they have produced over a period of 4 years to see how much the magazine covers have progressed and changed over time e.g. the titles may have been in bold and then maybe a few years later they may look handwritten. This helped me with my title because I thought of how my magazine cover would change over time, so I chose a font that would never go out of fashion due to its simplistic look. Also I examined the magazines to see if they change the fonts or colours at different seasons in the year e.g. ID magazine covers are very colourful and vibrant in the summer giving connotations of happiness and light. However in the winter seasons the magazine colours get removed and replaced with back and white/ greyscale type filters, this suites the overall atmosphere in the winter months because everyone feels quite melancholy due to the weather. I repeated this detail of coverage of magazine covers over lots of different fashion magazine brands to widen my research in order for me to create the perfect cover for my magazine. I then did a little research into different genres of magazines such as football and music to identify the differences in the cover and layout between my genre of fashion and that particular genre. This gave me lots of research and what to include in my magazine and not to include any features that other genres have, which fashion doesn’t. This enables me to stay in my fashion theme so I do not confuse the reader. From all my research into different magazines, I then had a very clear image of what different things I am going to include in my research like my magazine being high-end and what kind of information i will include inside of the magazine. Also I analysed different magazine covers, contents and double page spreads in detail to identify what details I need to include in my magazine and what layouts work really well in a magazine. I focused directly into the fashion genre because I wanted to just research this because that is my genre so It was more logical to focus on one genre. I then also analysed the z movement and point of focus to enable me to see what attracts the audience and what they see first on the magazine so I can create my layout around this. From doing this research I find out that it is very complex and hard to create the perfect magazine which appeals to target audiences because you have to include so much information and follow certain layouts and also come up with original ideas. My research into relevant audiences was also very effective because I created a Moodboard of all the different types of fashion that my audience would wear, which I can then include into my magazine. I then created an audience profile on a male and female to find out what they like and dislike, so I can use this information to help form my magazine and the content inside. I created a questionnaire for my target audience to answer to see what they prefer and want to be included or not in my magazine. This is very important for my research because I need to appeal to my target audience so my magazine is popular. The next thing was research into UK tribes to identify what category my target audience come under. Also the different brands that fit into the category so then I can include them in my research. I have learnt from doing the target audience research that it is hard to appeal to everyone that comes under the target age, because everyone has different likes and dislikes so it is hard to please everyone in the magazine.
  • 52. Front cover: One creative decision that I had to make was what to call my magazine. This was very hard because the name would then shape my magazine and how it looks. I chose the name ARTSIE because it sounds quite catchy and I wanted to mix art and fashion together to make an arty magazine. The original font that I was going to use was one that flowed together and was handwritten, to give a personal feel to the magazine. However this font really did not work or create the impression I was hoping for which then made me change it to this very unusual font which stands out from the page. Art is the semantic field of my genre because it relates to my title ARTSIE. I also had to decide on the colours that I needed to use because this would then form my colour scheme that I will then use throughout all of my magazine pages. This then made me think to put a plain and simple background so it doesn’t take away the attention from my main image. Next, I had decide on what writing I will have on my front cover and how it will fit in with my genre so I edited the background a different colour then the original image because I made the choice that it went with my theme better. Also what words will attract my target audience so they will be more likely to buy the magazine issue. The fonts were a massive decision for my front cover because I wanted them to stand out and be bold/simple, but also I wanted them to be individual and unique to the magazine. This was important because I want my magazine to memorable and important to people. The picture was quite easy to do and for it to fit in with my genre. The creative decision that I had to make was which pose should my model have and how will that effect the overall look of the front cover. Also I had to decide on what features to include on the magazine cover and which will match my overall genre. I took inspiration from a BAZAAR magazine to identify where things like the barcode and date are placed to get a magazine cover that could be directly compared to a real magazine and it to look similar. My magazine changed from a very disorganized front cover to a clean and neatly presented piece.
  • 53. Contents: Creative decisions that I had to make were what fonts for my main title and body text, this really effects the overall impression my magazine gives because I wanted to portray a very unique and high end feel to the magazine. I had to think of how to make my magazine contents different to the average magazine contents which is square boxed picture everywhere. So from this I made the decision to do triangles down the page to create a very unique geometric pattern and have pictures in each triangle. This then didn’t look right when I started to create the design so I then made the decision to create a hexagonal pattern down the left side of my page. Next I had to make a decision of what photos to put into my hexagons I wanted them all to go with my theme so I had to make a decision of how to edit each one so they looked individual but also seem like they flowed together. I made the choice of putting all the writing in the middle of the page and not at the side, this was to make it look very simplistic and so it doesn’t look over crowded. By making all these decisions for my contents page it really progressed very quickly and became really like a real contents page in a well known magazine. My finished contents is a very drastic change to my original ideas and layout for my contents page but I just tried out lots of my different ideas to get this finished one.
  • 54. Double page spread The first creative decision that I had to make was what font and colour should the title be. I studied lots of double page spreads and adored the typography lettering, however this did not suit the page because it was too much of a bold statement which didn’t go with any of the other aspects on the page. I chose this font because it is very bold and striking but it also has an edginess to it which makes it really suit the page vibe. I have put it on a blue/purple rectangle because that is the same colour which is on the front cover. This makes it all flow and not look like it could be from a different magazine. The writing is white because it matches the background of the page- it just makes it flow. I had to make a very hard decision on which picture (out of all the ones I took on the photoshoot) should be placed on the double page spread. I decided on this one because I felt like it has a very urban feel to it and the tilted head matches the one on the front cover perfectly. Next I had to decide on what to place above the main text. First I was going to collage a variety of photos which relate to the article. However I then came to the decision that, would make it seem too cluttered. So then I came up with the idea of listing the other items that Alice would be wearing as her perfect outfit and to include their prices so the reader is informed of how much they would be on average. The double page progressed form having the idea of 4 pictures on the left page and the title to be in the middle of them, to then having just one photo on the left page with the title above. The page changed from a very cluttered and unorganised page to a very simplistic but an effective double page spread which really fits within the rest of the magazine.
  • 55. My magazine front cover follows the colour themes that many well known magazines use (e.g. Wonderland) on theirs. They are very pale and minimalist colours that are not too bright or vibrant and just look very effective on magazine covers. they frame all of the information given on the front and don’t draw attention away from key features such as the image. These colours also fit all seasons of the year which real magazines follow these ideas too. I followed the conventions of BAZAAR magazine font but also changed it to suit my theme. The BAZAAR font is very bold and really makes a statement and I feel like when compared with mine, mine follows those lines as well. I chose BAZAAR’S font to follow because I feel like it has an edginess to it and it is very well know by everyone, so I wanted my magazine font to be well known as well. My front cover image also follows the forms of magazines because my model is facing directly forward to catch the readers attention. Many professional magazines use this technique because it is very effective due to the reader feeling like they have made a connection and can relate to the model due to their position in the image. Also how I have styled my model matches the way the professional magazines style their models because they always wear very simplistic clothes, which are either very formal or casual (in my case my model is wearing casual clothes). In my opinion, I feel like the way the model is dressed is very important because the genre is fashion so the model has to reflect the fashion which is in style to get more interest from their target market – so this is very important for me to follow the magazine conventions because it really effects the overall appearance if I do not follow them. My image compared to bullet magazines front cover image are very similar because they are both facing forward and are wearing casual clothes
  • 56. The square box shows the point of focus, this shows where the reader will first look. My point of focus follows the theme of professional magazines point of focus because on average they are usually placed just under the face or slightly on it. The point of focus on my magazine has the models lip, neck, hair and top in it. I have deliberately placed it here because I knew that part of her clothing must be in it because the magazine is fashion based, so that will be what will attract the reader the most. Part of her lip is in the point of focus because it shows the reader that she has got very minimal and natural makeup, which gives the audience the impression that the magazine is quite casual. This means more people will relate to it because the majority of the time the target audience wear casual clothes to work or at home. Her neck is in the point of focus because it will make the reader want to look at the models face. Also there are a selection of colours in the hotspot because it shows the consumer that the colours are very pale and quite indie looking. This suggests to them that this magazine is in the fashion genre but focussed more around indie fashion. This represents the z-movement which is the movement of the eye which happens when we intake the layout of a magazine front cover. Lots of magazines use this because it helps them layout their text and image in the particular z-movement to make the reader interested into purchasing the magazine. The eye firstly travels across the title of the magazine which is ARTSIE, this is to reinforce the brand and to make it more memorable because that is the first thing the reader sees. Then the eye moves down through the date which shows them that it is a recent issue, meaning there will be lots of in season styles so it will appeal a lot more to the consumer. Then the eye moves through the writing at the side which makes the reader intrigued to read the rest of the magazine because they want to know what are the best ever indie buys. Then the eye reaches the large text at the bottom, this makes the consumer know what the issue will be about. Then lastly the eye reaches the barcode and issue number. This is deliberately placed last because it will make the consumer decide whether to buy the issue or not.
  • 57. In my opinion I think my magazine was very successful because it fits perfectly into my genre and I think it passes off as a high end feeling and looking magazine. Also if my magazine was in store with other real magazines then I think it would fit in and not look odd or handmade. Strengths I think that I have got a lot of strengths in my work which include: • The colours- because I feel like they really go together and all fit in any season of the year. I love that they make a fantastic base for my photo and writing and are not too vibrant or look tacky. • The photos- because they are a really good quality and my model fits into my genre and theme perfectly. Also I feel like I have edited them to a high quality e.g. to give them a friendly feel and so they look quite ambient. In addition I like how the front cover image appears quite edgy and casual because it makes the magazine instantly have personality. • The title font- because it really stands out from the page and is very unique. Also it is quite interactive for the reader because they have to really stare at it to work out the letters because they look sunken into the page. This in turn makes readers more drawn to the magazine. • The name- because I feel like it really has got meaning behind it. Also it intrigues people who are into fashion and art because the name has ART in it. As well as this the name flows when you say it and because it is very unique (because there are no other magazine named ARTSIE) it makes the name stick into your head meaning there would be more sales. Weaknesses I think I have got a few weaknesses because every magazine will have down points to it no matter what, mine are: • The writing is very simple and straight to the point on the front cover which could make the reader not have enough detail to buy the magazine because they feel like it will not benefit them. • The writing on the double page spread because the reader may not want to know what Alice's style is or the article may not inspire or interest them in anyway. • I haven't included many features that will directly interest my target audience because I have only relied on the overall image of the magazine to intrigue them. However in my opinion it is really hard to appeal to a target audience because everyone that comes under the target age all have different tastes and are into different things. This makes it difficult to put so much variety into the magazine without it looking messy and cluttered. I tried to just fit in with the genre and put a lot of different fashion styles in to make my magazine more suitable for my target audience.
