1. Francisco J Fuster<br />RISE program<br />Summary<br />Lab on a Chip:<br /> Lab on a chip is exactly what you read. The first layer or template for the chip is made from vanadium oxide, a metal that is created after performing a very tedious method that involves the use of a tube to allow the passage of gases. These gases then have certain chemical reactions on the piece of metal resulting in the desired lower layer of the chip. The other parts of the chip are made by photolithography. This process involves the use of light to create any given shape on your first layer; which is the chip according to the design in the mask, or light template.<br /> How exactly is it a lab? Well, the structures left after photolithography, are coated with polymers or other substances. These polymers then attract different proteins or other molecules in a drop of blood. This is extremely helpful because it can detect certain epithelial proteins that are present in cancerous tumors. This chip is a major scientific breakthrough because it can detect proteins, or anything that is attracted by the polymers at a noticeably smaller scale than a normal lab test.<br />
