2. State of progress of the ongoing tasks
Task 1.1: Breeding strategies
Aim: identify the 10-15 traits, that are most important to the
stakeholders, assign them weights to allow index selection, define
ideotypes for the pilot studies and define the breeding strategies
to apply in the pilot studies.
Status:
– Two questionnaires have been prepared
and sent to apple and peach breeders
– The results of the apple survey (presented
yesterday) allowed to identify the most
important traits and to get a better
knowledge of the apple breeding programs
– The peach survey is still ongoing, so far 12
replies out of the 37 invitations
3. State of progress of the ongoing tasks
Task 1.2: Development and mapping of SNP markers tightly
associated to selected traits/loci
Aim: identify 5 resp. 10 SNPs for major genes and QTLs with large
effects mapped before the beginning of the project
Status:
Apple:
SNPs identified for apple scab res. genes Vbj and Rvi2
SNP in development for: Vb, and scab QTLs of Durello
di Forli, Fiesta, Discovery and fire blight resistance loci
of Evereste and M. robusta 5
Peach:
Segregating populations have been SNP genotyped with
9k RoseBreed chip. Analysis of the data is concluded, data
sent to the partners, mapping of SNP and identification of
SNPs associated to the traits is started.
4. State of progress of the ongoing tasks
Task 1.3: Pilot studies
Aim: test of the breeding strategies defined in T1.1
Status:
Breeding companies have chosen (or are in the process of choosing) the large
fruiting population(s) they will progressively select according the breeding strategy
defined in T1.1
Breeding institutes have performed new crosses according the ideotypes they
defined in T1.1. These populations have combinations of traits for which SNPs will
be developed (T1.2, T3.2, T3.3 and T4.4)
E.g. EVD: ACW 13652 (Rvi6, Pl2) x ACW 11567 (Rvi2, Rvi4); 2793 seeds (req. 2500)
Task 1.4: Genotyping pipeline
Aim: Optimization, description and test in the pilot studies of all the steps necessary to
perform MAB and genotyping of the plant material of the pilot studies
Status:
No activities so far in T1.4, but FEM in T6.4 is testing different low cost DNA extraction
methods.
This afternoon: short presentation of few technologies that could be used for the
genotyping with SNP markers of the populations of the pilot studies (Michela Troggio)
5. State of progress of the ongoing tasks
Task 1.5: Specifications list of the breeder-interface to query the
database to foster apple and peach breeding
Aim: prepare the list of specifications of the breeder-interface in order to allow
breeders to retrieve the information from the database necessary to select the
best parents and to interpret MAB results.
Status: First discussions with the stakeholders at the kick-off meeting in Angers and
yesterday during the “Stakeholder Platform day”.
This afternoon:
Short presentation of the RoseBreed breeder interface (Alessandra Stella) followed by
the start of the internal discussion on the breeder interface
6. Milestones and Deliverables status
• D1.1 (M12) Description of ideotypes and breeding schemes
For apple: survey concluded and most important traits identified
For peach: both tasks not yet concluded
To do for both species: weighting of the traits, description of ideotypes
and selection scheme to select the ideotypes in the pilot studies
• ML1.1 (M12, report) Ideotypes and relative breeding scheme including
MAB described. See above
• ML1.2 (M12, report) Evaluation of applicability of GWS to apple and
peach.
– GWS for apple has been studied (Kumar et al. 2011) extrapolation
from apple study for peach possible
7. Expected delays and problems
Delay of D1.1 the delay has been estimated to 3 months.
However, the delay has no consequences on the time-table of the
project (selection of pilot studies material will start at earliest in
2013)
New deadline of the D1.1 postponed to M15 (end of June 2012)
8. Tasks to be done during the Annual
Meeting
• Task 1.1:
All the partners involved in the task know what they have to deliver
and in which form in order to rapidly complete the deliverable D1.1
• Task 1.2:
Exchange of experiences on SNP identification
• Task 1.3:
If not yet done, select progenies for pilot studies
• Task 1.4:
Start to think which SNP genotyping technology could be
considered for the pilot studies
• Task 1.5:
Active participation to the definition of the requirements of the
breeder interface
