Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Facilitation Notes   PP #1 ~ Job Search & Marketing “Me” Inc.   Hi! Greetings! Good Morning/Good Afternoon Everyone! How are you doing today?   Use the Sales “Pitch” formula from page 21   Model the learning that will happen later in the presentation. Present yourself as you would if you were a job seeker. It introduces you and demonstrates the power of a ‘Pitch” or summary when you have prepared and practised. Make it impactful and an excellent demonstration to build your own credibility.   My name is : I am a... Specializing in... What do you do... Why you are the best at what you do... Your call to action...   There you have it – are you impressed? What I just gave to you was an introduction and a networking sales pitch. It’s one of the many aspects of Job Search and Marketing “Me Inc.” that we will be discussing and practising today.   Let’s do a quick Introduction of everyone to start – just your name and current position. Choose someone and start introductions.   Name & Position
  2.   There are many challenges that lay ahead of you as you start your job search and this program is designed to give you an overview of some of those really key and important components.   Let’s take a closer look at what we will be covering today.   Advance PP #2 ~ Today’s Objectives   Ask for a volunteer to read out the Objectives. When complete - ask if the group has any questions.
  3.    Advance PP #3 ~ Objectives   Ask for a volunteer to read the second page of objectives.
  4. Advance PP #4 ~ Agenda   Ask for a volunteer to read through Agenda. This is our menu for the day – an outline of our time together.   Are there any questions?   We’re here today to get a big picture look at Job Search. Our purpose today is to take a look at the big picture and as we understand the overview- we can then make more specific recommendations about your next step and where you can get the help you need. Today will also help you understand what you need to know to be effective at Job Searching.   Let’s move on
  5. Advance the PP #5 ~ Group Norms   In order for us to work together as a group we need to follow some guidelines or establish some game rules so that we can work effectively together and decide how we are going to function as a group.   Ask for a volunteer to read the Group Norms to the group.   Thank you!   Is this reasonable? Can everyone agree on this?
  6. Warm-Up Exercise   Advance PP #6 ~ The Story of ”ME”   To get started today we’re going to begin with an exercise to get our brains engaged and thinking about “Me Inc.” Our exercise is appropriately called The Story of “Me”. Indeed when you are looking for a job in today’s market you are the product - you are marketing yourself - “Me” Inc.   Let’s get started   Read out the instructions embellish as you go along or improvise additional comments.   Read the instructions and demonstrate folding the paper as you describe. Read PP – The Story of “Me”.   I’m going to ask to take the sheet of flipchart paper (demonstrate) and fold it in half and then half again.   You have just been given a contract to write your autobiography for a major publishing company. Your agent, Harry Hardnose is anxious to get to press. He has decided to help you get started with a few probing questions”.
  7. Choose a popular or your favourite song as the title of your book. On the inside of the front cover (page two), list a table of contents. Name of the place where you were born Description of your first job Number of years you have been working for your current company. It doesn’t have to be a Picasso or a Da Vinci On page three, draw a picture of your family. On the back cover of the book, draw a picture or write down in words where you want to be in five years. Think more in terms of your career or your job in 5 years.   Prompt - You have 5 minutes – move quickly and think fast!   Give a 1 minute warning.   Advance PP #7 the Story of “Me” Continued   Using your book as a visual aid, tell the group your story. We want to hear from everyone so keep that in mind when you’re telling your story.   Materials Needed:Flip Chart Paper Markers   Time:   Allow five to ten minutes for setup, and drawing. When all books are complete, have people tell their story, using the book as a visual aid. Depending on the size of the group, you may want to debrief in smaller groups.   Allow five to ten minutes to have people tell their story.
  8. Wow! there’s a lot of interesting stories - thank you for sharing with the group. Thank you everyone for sharing and disclosing some of your information with us.   Let’s move on now and take a look at getting very focused in our discussions. Here’s a great quote by Dr. Robert Schuller – “What appears to be an end in the road may simply be a bend in the road.”   Although we may be preparing for leaving something behind we also know that moving forward and looking ahead to new opportunities is much more comfortable when we are informed and comfortable with our new direction and understanding of what lies ahead for us.   This is a tremendous opportunity to adjust and re-align your career goals and really make an informed decision about what you want to do and where you want to go as you transition to new employment.   Knowing what you want to do is so important and critical when it comes to marketing yourself. If you don’t know or aren’t sure – how can you target yourself to a potential audience? This still doesn’t negate putting your history together at this point. It will mean re-adjusting and re-aligning your materials at some point in the future but you can still get started.
  9. Advance PP #9~ What Are Your Marketing Tools?   Brainstorm first and ask what they can come up with and then advance the slide. Ask someone to read the items.   Go into a little more detail with the list as you see fit. Brainstorm before showing the list – get them to come up with as many marketing tools as possible.   Can anyone think of any other marketing tools?
  10. Advance PP #10 ~ Let’s Get Focused ... Getting Started   We’re going to get a brief overview of these key points today. These are the key areas that we are focusing on as we begin to prepare to market ourselves.
  11. Advance PP #11 ~ Let’s Get Focused ... Getting Started   We’re going to get a brief overview of these key points today. These are the key areas that we are focusing on as we begin to prepare to market ourselves.
  12. Ask participants if they can name the various styles and if they can describe them before advancing the screen. Review when each style is appropriate to use. Suggest that they start with a Functional. It is a little more difficult to write but gives the opportunity to pull out skills and target our skills and accomplishments more towards our job target. It is very easy to convert your resume into any other format. Starting with a skills-based resume helps to better prepare us for networking and interviewing – when we must become very fluent in our skills and accomplishments. Every resume you send must be targeted to a specific position or at least we must have a very good idea of our relevance to the needs of the company or organization that we are approaching. We send our resumes to target future potential and opportunities. Refer to the Appendix and all the great examples to assist them. Remind everyone that ERCs and IRS’ can help and critique resumes too.
  13. You must become familiar and comfortable with posting your resume on-line to various different databases. For some companies, it is the only way you can apply. ERCs and IRS’ can also help with learning how to format your resume properly. Respond and read instructions carefully when applying on-line. Make sure you are very adept at posting. You don’t want your resume to be illegible at the other end. Your text or on-line resume is your regular resume converted to a text format. Many websites allow you to download a Word version. Check to make sure everything looks good and is easy to read. There is a knack to converting your regular resume – make sure you visit an ERC or IRS and have a clear understanding of how to post properly.
  14. Ask participants to contribute what they think should be on this list. They probably know a great deal already. Convey that it is a marketing piece – almost like a brochure. A good resume takes 30-50 hours to properly prepare. It is a very labour intensive piece to write and is critical to your success. There is also a quality standard in the market. Make sure it meets that standard. Your resume is a demonstration of your communication skills.
  15. Ask them –Why do we write a cover letter what is the purpose of a cover letter. Refer to the excellent examples in the Appendix of the handout. This information is there to assist when starting to write letters. There are many wonderful resources available at the ERCs and IRS that are also extremely helpful when writing both resumes and cover letters. Use ALL resources at your disposal to improve the quality of your work. It is better to spend time on your work then to try and rush and produce poor quality work. If you meet job posting requirements and you are not getting contacted – step back- something must be wrong. Seek out qualified career specialist or professionals to help you – not your spouse or neighbour – they are not the experts. Visit an ERC or an IRS and get your work critiqued.
  16. In your groups, review the resume and cover letter samples on pages 31, 32, & 33. Brainstorm and record on flipchart paper as many ideas as you can about effective resumes and cover letters. Resumes and cover letters can be effective in different ways. Split the group in half and have GROUP 1 focus on the resume and Group 2 focus on the cover letter. Ask them to write RESUME or COVER LETTER as their heading. What makes a resume and cover letter stand out? What makes a resume or cover letter good or bad? What does it look like? What elements convey an effective message? What else have you seen, heard, or read about effective resumes and cover letters? (15 Minutes) Assign a presenter for your group and share your ideas with the entire group. Post on the wall in a visible spot. All groups present their findings. (15 Minutes)
  17. This statement is very true when it comes to job searching. Preparation is key to being successful. In today’s market you cannot fly by the seat of your pants. Roll out prepared and ready so that you don’t lose out on opportunities that first come your way.
  18. What are the challenges of networking? Do you really understand how to network effectively? What are the percentages of jobs found through the Hidden Job Market? What is the Hidden Job Market? Where can you go to improve your networking skills? What community resources are available to assist you? Do a very quick brainstorm on a flipchart. Who makes up your network? Let people know what you are looking for – Don’t ask any one for a job – it’s like asking to borrow money from a friend. Ask who they know who might have some information or if they know someone you can talk to- Your mission is to get information -
  19. A word of advice ... If you take a break once you leave your work – you can do yourself great harm. It is very difficult to gain momentum from a cold start and you can actually hurt your career and opportunities by delaying. We speak from observation and years of experience. The average job search – takes 6-9 months – even if you are highly qualified. If the market is competitive – it can be very challenging to land on your feet. If you need certifications, or additional qualifications or computer skills address these things immediately. Invest in yourself – understand the process and the demands of job searching in today’s world of work. This is especially true if you have not been in the job market recently.
  20. Individual & Group Exercise: Using the sample format for a 30 Second Sales Pitch, write an effective and concise statement about yourself. (See the sample format on Page 10 , 11 and other examples on Page 12). My name is … Specializing in … State: What do you do … State: Why are you the best at what you do … Your call to action: What action do you want the other person to take … Fill in the blanks and then transfer your statement to the Putting It All Together section on Page 12. (10 Minutes) Move into the groups as assigned. (4-5 persons for each group) Each person take turns presenting their Sales Pitch. After each person delivers their statement, provide feedback on what was positive and how they might improve their statement and presentation in future. Make sure everyone has time to present within the allotted time. If you finish early, each member can go again. (10 minutes)
  21. As Outlined Page 10, 11 & 12 in the Participant handout.
  22. Ask participants to guess then show the slide. Ask for a volunteer to read out loud.
  23. Prompt for participants to list. Show the Top Ten.
  24. Today’s market demands that job seekers “take the bull by the horns” 4 gifts and attitudes that you must have. Accept change – move on and forward. Strive for excellence in your marketing materials – quality and prepared – you can’t fly by the seat of your pants. Be accountable – nobody is going to hunt you down for a job – be self-reliant, self-directed See this as a time to re-think, re-create, re-invent yourself. Don’t look for your old job – look for new opportunities. Commit to lifelong learning – what have you done lately – upgrade, improve, re-energize yourself – learn something new!
  25. Ask a participant to read.
  26. Ask participants to state: One of the following Something new they learned ... Something that surprised them about today’s information ... Something that they can take away and apply. Make sure you hear from everyone. Ask them to fill out their Action Plan based on today’s presentation.
  27. Read the quote and wish them well Time left? Question & Answer time.
