2. 1 overlies the lateral surface of the tibial shaft
2 is occupied by two muscles
3 is bounded by the anterior and posterior intermuscular septum

The lateral compartment of the leg:
3. 1 overlies the lateral surface of the tibial shaft
F
2 is occupied by two muscles

3 is bounded by the anterior and posterior intermuscular septum

5 contains muscles which are evertors of the foot

The lateral compartment of the leg:
The lateral compartment of the leg overlies the lateral surface of the shaft of the fibula. It is separated
from the anterior compartment by the anterior intermuscular septum, and from the posterior
compartment by the posterior intermuscular septum.
It contains two muscles: peroneus longus and peroneus brevis, both of which are evertors of the foot
and both of which are weak plantar flexors of the ankle joint. The nerve of the lateral compartment is
the superficial peroneal nerve.
4. 1 it is innervated by the deep peroneal nerve
2 it is an invertor of the foot
3 it is attached distally to the base of the 5th metatarsal
4 its tendon is posterior to that of peroneus brevis at the level of the lateral malleolus
5 it arises from the upper two-thirds of the lateral surface of the fibula
Concerning the peroneus longus muscle/tendon:
5. 1 it is innervated by the deep peroneal nerve
F
2 it is an invertor of the foot
F
3 it is attached distally to the base of the 5th metatarsal
F
4 its tendon is posterior to that of peroneus brevis at the level of the lateral malleolus
T
5 it arises from the upper two-thirds of the lateral surface of the fibula
T
Concerning the peroneus longus muscle/tendon:
Peroneus longus is innervated by the superficial peroneal nerve.
It is an evertor of the foot. It is also a weak plantarflexor of the foot.
Its distal attachment is the plantar aspect of the base of the 1st metatarsal and the medial
cuneiform. It is peroneus brevis which is attached to the styloid process at the base of the
5th metatarsal.
6. 1 contains the trunk of the peroneal artery
2 contains the peroneus tertius muscle
3 contains a muscle whose tendon runs in a groove on the plantar surface of the navicular
4 contains a muscle whose tendon is inserted onto the head of the 1st metatarsal
5 contains the trunk of the common peroneal nerve
The lateral compartment of the leg:
7. 1 contains the trunk of the peroneal artery F
2 contains the peroneus tertius muscle F
3 contains a muscle whose tendon runs in a groove on the plantar surface of the navicular F
4 contains a muscle whose tendon is inserted onto the head of the 1st metatarsal F
5 contains the trunk of the common peroneal nerve T
The lateral compartment of the leg:
The peroneal artery is a direct branch of the posterior tibial artery. Despite its name, it lies within the posterior
compartment of the leg, not the lateral compartment.
The trunk of the common peroneal nerve enters the substance of the peroneus longus muscle within which it divides
into its two terminal branches: superficial peroneal nerve and deep peroneal nerve.
The tendon of peroneus longus runs in a groove on the plantar surface of the cuboid, not navicular. The tendon the
inserts onto the base of the 1st metatarsal, not head of the metatarsal.
8. 1 is a dorsiflexor of the ankle joint
2 is a plantarflexor of the ankle joint
3 is an evertor of the foot
4 has a tendon which runs behind the lateral malleolus lying anterior to the tendon of
peroneus longus
5 is innervated by the deep peroneal nerve
The peroneus brevis muscle:
9. 1 is a dorsiflexor of the ankle joint F
2 is a plantarflexor of the ankle joint T
3 is an evertor of the foot T
4 has a tendon which runs behind the lateral malleolus lying anterior to the tendon of
peroneus longus
T
5 is innervated by the deep peroneal nerve F
The peroneus brevis muscle:
10. 1 originates within the substance of the peroneus brevis muscle as a terminal branch of the
common peroneal nerve
2 innervates peroneus tertius
3 innervates the skin on the dorsum of the foot
4 innervates the skin on the lateral aspect of the sole of the foot
5 innervates the evertors of the foot
The superficial peroneal nerve:
11. 1 originates within the substance of the peroneus brevis muscle as a terminal branch of the
common peroneal nerve
F
2 innervates peroneus tertius F
3 innervates the skin on the dorsum of the foot T
4 innervates the skin on the lateral aspect of the sole of the foot F
5 innervates the evertors of the foot T
The superficial peroneal nerve:
The superficial peroneal nerve originates in the substance of the peroneus longus muscle, not
peroneus brevis. It innervates peroneus longus and brevis but not peroneus tertius (which, being
a muscle of the anterior compartment is innervated by the deep peroneal nerve).
The superficial peroneal nerve innervates most of the skin on the dorsum of the foot but none on
the sole.
Peroneus longus and brevis are both evertors of the foot.
