Nigeria is located on the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa. It has a diverse geography that ranges from coastal lowlands in the south to arid lands in the north. Nigeria has a long history of European colonization beginning in the 16th century, and it gained independence from Britain in 1960. However, the early independence period was unstable and two military coups took place. This led to a civil war in 1967 when the Eastern region of Biafra declared independence, resulting in over 2 million deaths. Nigeria has a diverse culture that reflects its ethnic and religious mix, with influences from its colonial history under Britain.
2. GEOGRAPHY
Nigeria is located on the Gulf of Guinea. Its largest cities are located in
the lowlands of the south. The central part of the country consists of
hills and plateaus. The north consists of arid lowlands. The
neighboring countries are Benin, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.
The forests and woodlands occur mainly in the southern third of the
country, which is affected by seasonal rains coming from the Atlantic
Ocean between June and September. As one goes north, the country
is becoming drier and the vegetation more similar to the savanna. The
northern third of the country is included in the semi-arid Sahel region,
which marks the southern boundary of the Sahara desert.
Nigeria is divided into three rivers Niger and Benue, arriving in the
country coming from the northeast and northwest and will join more or
less in the center, near the new capital, Abuja. Hence, the Niger River
Benue added with water flows south to empty into the sea in a large
delta
3. HISTORY
Europeos and Independence
In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries began to arrive the European
maritime powers, especially the British, who eventually won the region
militarily.
After World War II, before the struggle for independence, the British tried a
Constitution that would unite people Muslim, Catholic and Protestant, who
never experience to operate efficiently. So when Nigeria gained its
independence in 1960, was primarily comprised of three nations.
The first six years of independence were disastrous, and in 1966 a group
of young officers, most Ibos, carried out a ruthless coup that brought to
power the General Ironsi. Some months later he was deposed in another
coup by Lieutenant Colonel Yakubu Gowon, a Christian from the northern
region.
4. CIVIL WAR
In May 1967 another
military Ojukwu, who
never renconheceu to
Gowon, declared the
separation of the eastern
part of the country,
creating the state of
Biafra. The following civil
war caused the death from
hunger of almost two
million biafrenhos. The
year was 1970
5. THE FLAG
In 1959, a competition was organized to
define the future flag of Nigeria. Between
2870 tenders, won the drawing for a student
of Ibadan, Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi.
Green represents agriculture; white, peace
and unity ("Peace and Unity" was the first
motto of Nigeria).
The flag of Nigeria was designed in 1959 and
first officially hoisted on October 1, 1960.
6. CULTURE
Nigeria brings together an extraordinary mix
of cultures, religions and peoples, which can
be admired in urbanism and architecture of
different cities, according to the country
where they were. Although now dominates
the culture and the Islamic religion, the
