SUNWAY GROUP: Leadership Coaching Advantage
SUNWAY GROUP (SUNWAY) is one of Malaysia’s most widely recognised and diversified
conglomerates with a multitude of established businesses, including: civil engineering and
construction; property development and investment; leisure,entertainment and hospitality;
healthcare; and education.
SUNWAY gives special attention to developing their potential employees. With the support of a
good performance management system and an objective talent assessment review, they identify
the high potential talents at the various levels in the organisation and develop them through
targeted talent development programmes.
The Challenge
CELSIM was asked to design and deliver a leadership coaching programme to equip managers
targeted for succession into senior management positions with the tools and techniques to lead,
coach and motivate themselves and their teams to greater performance.
The objective of the programme is to develop critical leadership capabilities in:
1. Coaching: rise to full leadership potential, help teams and colleagues realise their true
potential, motivate people to attain corporate and personal goals.
2. Communication: set practical and challenging objectives and achieve them, overcome
obstacles to change, give effective feedback that gets positive results.
3. Influence: build successful working relationships improving impact and influence, ensure
team and organisation are aligned with the culture and business direction.
The Solution
In partnership with Larry Yap, Executive Director, Group HR & Shared Service Centre, we
designed the Leadership Coaching Advantage programme – combining highly engaging
workshops, one-to-one coaching, personal development plans, action learning projects, and e-
learning – to address SUNWAY’s culture and their leadership challenges. This included:
 Examining leadership styles and choices through highly interactive activities to allow
participants to experience leadership coaching dynamics with organisational awareness.
 Developing clarity, achievement orientation and flexibility of approach to motivate and
inspire self and others to improve personal impact and influence.
 Learning the skills of building deep, influential rapport with others and moving from
conflict to agreement and cooperation.
The Results
SUNWAY managers gained the confidence, skills and knowledge to create deep sustainable
change swiftly and easily and inspire commitment and motivation from teams to achieve their own
and the organisation’s goals.
Siew Chuei Li, Senior Nurse Manager, Human Capital Development, Sunway Medical Centre, a
participant on our leadership coaching programme says, ““This programme provided me with
some excellent insight into how I work and how I can improve my effectiveness. The one-to-one
coaching helped me develop significant clarity on my priorities and I became much more
