A patient underwent a total thyroidectomy to remove a huge thyroid gland that had extended into the chest cavity behind the breastbone and caused the trachea to shift from its normal position. Pre-operation chest X-rays showed the trachea had been pushed aside by the large thyroid. The surgery successfully removed the entire thyroid gland and allowed the trachea to return to the midline.
