This document provides an overview of General Air Products' fire protection air compressors and residential fire pump systems. It describes their oil-less and lubricated air compressor series that are specifically designed for NFPA 13 dry pipe sprinkler system applications. It highlights key components such as pressure switches, air maintenance devices, and accessories. It emphasizes that while fire protection and retail air compressors look similar, fire protection compressors are built for the demands of sprinkler systems and should not be substituted with retail models. Proper component selection and regular maintenance are important for reliable fire protection.

Line StartersLine Starters
We strongly recommend that a line starter
accompany every General Air Products' air
compressor.
General Air Products' IEC Line Starter provide
protection to motor windings from harmful currents that
result in temperature rises that may be caused by either
overloading the motor, sustained low line voltage, or
locked rotor.
Think of it like this…
Line Starters are to air compressors what surge
protectors are to your computer.

Air Maintenance DevicesAir Maintenance Devices
The AMD-2 is used for
automatic operation
with a dedicated air
compressor for a
sprinkler system,
such as the L Series
base mounted
compressor.
The AMD-1 is used when
compressed air is
supplied through an
existing factory air supply
or when using tank
mounted units like the
OLT Series.
Note: Air Maintenance Devices (AMD) are required on every system unless the
compressor meets the code exemption in NFPA 7.2.6.5.2

Manual Dryer & Coalescing FilterManual Dryer & Coalescing Filter
The F3500 Coalescing Filter
protects manual desiccant air
dryers from oil vapor and
contaminants.
The AD3400 Manual Desiccant Air
Dryer absorbs moisture produces
by compressing air. The desiccant
changes color to indicate saturation.
23. Accessory Spotlight:Accessory Spotlight:
Flex Hose & Vibration PadsFlex Hose & Vibration Pads
The Stainless Steel Flex
Hose reduces vibration
and noise through the
piping system.
Vibration Isolation Pads are
made of cork and neoprene for
additional vibration and noise
reduction.

SimilaritiesSimilarities
Same basic components:
• Glass Enclosure

Same basic operation:
Electricity runs through the wire and

and creates light.

So why not use them interchangeably? So why not use them interchangeably?
The differences are obvious.
Each was built for a specific application and only
works well when used in that application.

SimilaritiesSimilarities
Same basic components:
• Filter
• Relief valve
• Pistons
• Pressure switch
Same basic operation:
When the pressure switch activates the
pistons turn and air is drawn in through
the intake filters, compressed and put
towards the intended application.

Common problems associated
with retail compressors used in
fire protection applications:
• Significantly decreased unit life
• Sprinkler system operation failure
(where pressure is left at the default
setting)
• Warranty can be voided when retail
compressor used on fire system
• Lack of technical support
• Forced to change parts to meet system
demands

47. In the event of a malfunctioning compressor…In the event of a malfunctioning compressor…
- Call us at 800-345-8207
- We will attempt to troubleshoot the compressor with the contractor on site – in most cases
we are able to identify the problem and recommend a solution that does not involve
replacing / removing the compressor
- If it is determined that the compressor must be returned the contractor
will be asked to contact the company where he purchased the
compressor. They (the distributor) will contact us and an RGA number
will be issued.
- Make sure to properly package the compressor for return
49. Upon ReturnUpon Return
- We will thoroughly test the unit for the described malfunction
- If the compressor is found to be working properly we will send a report
on what was found and what test were performed.
- If the compressor is found to be defective and under warranty a refund
will be issued.
- Separately, any other returned unit – for example a unit ordered with
the wrong voltage – will incur a 25% restocking fee.
50. Returned Goods OverviewReturned Goods Overview
- Troubleshooting must always come first
- An inspection will be incurred for materials returned and found not defective if General Air
Products is not first contacted while the problem with the unit is occurring in the field
- Material must be received within 2 weeks of RGA issue
- Materials returned for credit only will be assessed a standard
restocking fee of 25%
- The material returned must be new in the original packaging and unused
- We can not accept returned product without:
- A General Air Products authorized RGA Number
- A specific reason for the return (“damaged” and “not working” are not sufficient)
- Proper packaging
- Copy of RGA Authorization must be used as the packing slip
- The RGA Number must be clearly marked on all packages
51. Warranty OverviewWarranty Overview
- 1 year manufacturers warranty
- Material returned will be inspected by General Air Products, Inc.
- The determination will be made whether to repair, replace, issue credit or deny the claim.
- An inspection fee will be incurred for materials returned and found not defective if General
Air Products is not first contacted while the problem with the unit is occurring in the field
