The European starch industry processes 22 million tonnes of raw materials annually, including 15 million tonnes of cereals and 7 million tonnes of potatoes. This results in 9.9 million tons of starch products produced yearly by 24 companies across 69 plants. The industry generates €7.7 billion in annual turnover and employs 14,400 people directly. Major applications of starch and derivatives in the EU market include processed foods (32%), confectionery and drinks (28%), and pharmaceuticals and chemicals (29%).
