Enzymes, the largest class of proteins, are biocatalysts. Over 2000 different kinds are known, each catalysing a different kind of chemical reaction. Enzymes differ in two ways from other polymers. From a structural point of view, they have very complex and specific three-dimensional conformations. From a functional viewpoint, they are dynamic macromolecules with enormous catalytic power.
