JESUS WAS THE ALMIGHTY
EDITED BY GLENN PEASE
JESUS IS ALMIGHTY GOD!
By David J. Stewart
1stTimothy 3:16 says,
“...Godwas manifestin the flesh...”
Jeremiah32:18, “Thou shewestlovingkindness unto thousands, and
recompensestthe iniquity of the fathers into the bosomof their children after
them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name.”
The Bible teaches fromGenesis to Revelationthat Jesus was born into the
world as the MANIFESTATION (revealing)of God to the world. The truthful
Biblical doctrine that Jesus is almighty God is known as Christ's “deity.”
Literally, the GODHEAD became fleshand walkedthe earth in the form of a
man. Jesus was 100%man and 100%God. Now God is holy and is a Spirit
(John 4:24). As such, man cannot fellowshipwith God the Father. That's why
the Fathersent His only begottenSon, Jesus Christ, to bridge that gap. As
human beings we cancommunicate with the man Christ Jesus, and then as
deity Jesus cancommunicate with God the Father on our behalf. 1stTimothy
2:5, “Forthere is one God, and one mediator betweenGodand men, the man
Christ Jesus.”
Man could not enter into a union with God, but as God, Jesus can, and God
could not enter into a union with man, but as man, Jesus can. So we contact
the Man, Christ Jesus, andthe Father contacts the God, Christ Jesus;hence,
man contacts Godthrough His Counsellor, and our Saviour, the God-man,
Christ Jesus.

The Doctrine Of The Son | The Doctrine Of The Father | The Doctrine Of The
Holy Spirit (2)
There is nothing more important to Christianity than the fundamentals of the
Bible (MP3, Dr. Owens)—the DOCTRINEOF CHRIST. The doctrine of
Christ includes the physical blood of Jesus Christ, the literal virgin birth,
Christ's deity as almighty God, His bodily resurrectionfrom the dead, His
sinless life, et cetera.
Only God Is Entitled To Receive WORSHIP,and Jesus ReceivedWorship
Only Jesus acceptedthe worship of others (Matthew 8:2), because Jesus is
worthy of man's WORSHIP! Jesus is worthy of every creatures worship!
Only God Almighty is entitled to receive worship. The Bible teaches thatGod
will NOT share His glory with another (Isaiah42:8). If Jesus weren't
Almighty God, then He couldn't have receivedthe worship of so many people
(Matthew 9:18;14:33;15:25;18:26;20:20;28:9). Jesus gladly receivedworship
from people, as GodAlmighty is entitled to.

Jesus is Almighty God!
Notice once againthat all modern corrupt Bible versions remove every
mention of the word “worship” concerning the Lord Jesus Christ, changing
the word “worship” to a mere “knelt.” It is deceptionof the worstkind. Satan
tried to take awayour Bibles, but failed. Then Satantried to cause us to doubt
the Bible, as he did Eve; but failed again. Now Satanis changing our Bibles,
trying to deceive us again. Sadly, most people have been woefully deceived.
The New International Version is dangerous, as are all the other modern
perversions of the Scriptures. Only the King James Bible is trustworthy.
The Word Of GodBecame Incarnate (Flesh) In Jesus The Man
Here is the strongestevidence from the Scriptures of Christ's deity...
John 1:1-3 and 14, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All
things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was
made. ... And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld
his glory, the glory as of the only begottenof the Father,)full of grace and
truth.”
Jesus is the Word incarnate. God's Word is not merely a book with white
pages and black ink; but rather, God's Words are living, as we read in
Hebrews 4:12, “Forthe word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than
any twoedgedsword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit,
and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of
the heart.” God Words are alive (quickened) because Godis alive. The Bible
contains over 7,000 promises (many repeated for emphasis) from God, some
unconditional and many conditional.
If a man authors a book and then dies, future readers may feellike they've
personally knownthe author after reading his book. However, the author
(Holy Spirit) of the Bible is alive forevermore!!! This is why Jesus saidin John
6:63, “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words
that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” There you have it...
the Words of the Bible are spirit, that is, given by the inspiration of the Holy
Spirit (2nd Timothy 3:16), and they are life!!!
Psalms 33:11, “The counselof the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his
heart to all generations.”Thatis precious to me, that is, the Bible is “THE
THOUGHTS OF HIS HEART” to all generations. Whenwe read, search,
memorize and study the Bible, we are learning the thoughts of God our
Creator. The next time you getdiscouraged, openyour King James Bible and
look for God's THOUGHTS on the matter, whateveryour needs or problems
may be. This is why we are commanded wonderfully in Philippians 4:5,
“Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of
others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” Jesus'
mindset was that of continually thinking about others.
Jesus is the sweetestname I know,
And He’s just the same as His lovely Name,
And that’s the reasonwhy I love Him so;
Oh, Jesus is the sweetestname I know.
There is no name in earth or Heav’n above,
That we should give such honor and such love
As the blessedName, let us all acclaim,
That wondrous, glorious Name of Jesus.
JESUS IS GOD... ALMIGHTY GOD!!! The deity of Jesus Christis the most
denied doctrine in this world by unbelievers. They vehemently hate the very
idea that Jesus was born upon the earth as God incarnate (in the flesh).
A “doctrine” is simply a teaching. Doctrines are composedofwords. Thus
words are critically important. The greattheologicalbattles and debates of
our generationare being fought over the meaning of words, whether it be the
word “repentance” orthe word “inspired,” the spiritual battle is raging.
God deliver us from deeper-life theologians who canquote the Bible, dissectit
and expound upon it, but they never share the gospelwith their neighbors and
let the world die and go to Hell. On my website ministry, I aim to encourage
everyone to be a soul-winner. Proverbs 11:30 says, “He that winneth souls is
wise.” That's one Scripture that you won't hear often from the intelligencia
crowd.
John 1:1-2 and 14, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. ...And
the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the
glory as of the only begottenof the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
The word “Godhead” is found in Acts 17:29, Romans 1:20 and Colossians2:9
in the King James Bible. All modern corrupt Bible versions completely
remove this criticalword, “Godhead.” Satanwants to deceive you concerning
the Godhead. The word “Trinity” may not be in the Bible, but the word
“Godhead” mostcertainly is. Why would anyone remove this word from the
Bible? It's because the Devil wants to deceive you.
Colossians 2:9 says, “...Forin him [Jesus]dwelleth all the fulness of the
Godheadbodily.”
Only God Can FORGIVE Sin, and Jesus ForgaveSin
Jesus forgave sin as only God cando. WickedCatholic priests and evil
Lutheran ministers sinfully claim the power to forgive people's sins. You'll
burn in Hell if you trust men to forgive your sins. You'd better seek
forgiveness from the God-man, Christ Jesus, Who has the nail-scaredhands
and feet. Only in Jesus'name can anyone's sins be forgiven, for it was Christ
Who died for OUR SINS. Even the wickedPharisees who soughtto kill Jesus
weren't so wickedas to think that they could forgive men's sins...
Mark 2:7, “Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who canforgive sins
but God only?”
As the Bible says, only God canforgive sins, and Jesus is God!!! In Matthew
9:2-3 we read that Jesus mercifully forgave a man's sins and healed him of a
horrible disability...
Matthew 9:2-3, “And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy,
lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son,
be of goodcheer;thy sins be forgiven thee. And, behold, certain of the scribes
said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.”
Notice that the unbelieving Scribes accusedthe Lord of blasphemy for
claiming the powerto forgive men's sins. Ah, but Jesus was Godin the flesh
and did indeed have all the powerof Heavento forgive sin as only God can.
Jesus did NOT give up His deity when He came to the earth; but rather, He
humbled Himself as a suffering and obedient servant(Hebrews 5:8;
Philippians 2:8).
Only Jesus forgave sin in the Bible (Matthew 9:2). Only God Almighty can
forgive sin.
Jesus Is The I AM (God almighty)
Jesus is the I AM of Exodus 3:14...
Exodus 3:14, “And God saidunto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said,
Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.”
The Jews pickedup stones to kill Jesus when He made the following claim...
John 8:58, “Jesus saidunto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before
Abraham was, I am.”
As you just read, Jesus directly claimed to be the I AM... God almighty!!!
Amen and amen!!!
Jesus is God Almighty, which He claims to be in Revelation1:8...
Revelation1:8, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith
the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”
Jesus claimedto be God in John 10:33...
John 10:33 says, “The Jews answeredhim, saying, For a goodwork we stone
thee not; but for blasphemy; and because thatthou, being a man, Makest
Thyself God.”
“MakestThyselfGod...”
Searchthe Scriptures!
In John 5:39 Jesus commanded, “Searchthe Scriptures; for in them ye think
ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me.” Amen! The Bible
testifies of Jesus. Revelation19:10, “...worshipGod: for the testimony of Jesus
is the spirit of prophecy.” Here we are commanded to worship God; not the
Devil nor the Antichrist. Alice Bailey's mentor was Helen Petrovna Blavatsky
(1831-1891), who statedin her writings:
“Lucifer is the LOGOS in his highest, and the 'Adversary' in his lowestaspect
— both of which are reflectedin our Ego,” (The SecretDoctrine II; pg. 162).
Blavatskyeven published a magazine in London in 1887 called, LUCIFER.
She writes in one of her works that:
“Satanis the god of our planet, and the only god,”
SOURCE:The SecretDoctrine II; pg. 234
This is the truth behind the entire New Age Movement. Alice Baileystarted a
publishing house in 1922 calledTHE LUCIFER TRUST. A year later due to
public outrage it was renamed LUCIS TRUST, and is the spiritual foundation
of the United Nations today.
"No one will enter the New World Order unless he or she will make a pledge
to worship Lucifer. No one will enter the New Age unless he will take a
Luciferian Initiation." —David Spangler, Directorof Planetary Initiative,
United Nations
Satancan only deceive people who are woefully ignorant of the Words of God.
If you SEARCHTHE SCRIPTURES forthe answers as Jesuscommanded,
then you will be prepared to ward off demonic attacks againstyour faith.
Ephesians 6:17 tells us that the Bible is our sword, our weaponto fight the
Devil. Even Jesus Christ Himself used the Scriptures to defeatSatan when he
was tempted in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-10). If Jesus neededto use the
Scriptures, then why are churchgoers todaybuying all the New York Time's
books on the BestSeller List? Max Lucado has written 2 books per year for
over the past 22 years;and he promotes ecumenicalunity betweenCatholics
and Protestants, betweenunbelievers and believers. The Bible teaches forus
to divide over truth, instead of uniting by error (2nd Corinthians 6:14-17).
I hope and pray that those who read this article will searchthe Scriptures
concerning the Doctrine of Christ, and learn exactly Who our Lord Jesus
Christ really is, because you'll be deceivedif you don't. Mark 13:22, “Forfalse
Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to
seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.” Didyou read that... TO SEDUCE,
IF IT WERE POSSIBLE,EVEN THE ELECT. The electsimply refers to
every born-again Christian. The Bible teaches that times will become so
deceptive that even Christians would be seducedif it weren't for the Holy
Spirit of Godthat seals (Ephesians 1:13), protects (John 10:28) and guides
(John 16:13) them into all truth. Thank Godfor His wonderful Holy Spirit
and the precious Words of God.
The doctorsays, “I practice medicine.” The attorney says, “I practice law.”
The Christian says, “I practice Christ!”
Jesus Is Almighty God
If you geta King James Bible and study its truths as a born-again believer,
then you will see the truth as John 16:13 promises. You will see the divine
truth that Jesus is almighty God, and not just “a god” as JW's falsely claim.
Only the Lord Jesus Christ has the powerto forgive men's sins. Only Jesus is
worthy of worship and never tried to stop anyone from worshipping Him in
the Bible. Amen! WORSHIP JESUS, for He is worthy! Wise men still seek
Him today and WORSHIP Him!!! Matthew 2:2, “Saying, Where is he that is
born King of the Jews? forwe have seenhis star in the east, and are come to
worship him.” Notice also that the wise men followedthe holy Scriptures and
not the star. The Bible, Daniel's prophecy, told the Chaldeanscholars in
Babylon about the star, and then they followedit because they were wise,
wanting to bless and worship the prophesied Saviour, Christ the Lord!
There are thousands of websites promoting mind, body and spirit teachings
that are completely lacking of the Doctrine of Christ. They are websites
published by heathens, psychologists, witches and New Agers. They are all
Christ-rejecters, althoughthey may vaguely mention some teachings of Christ
to deceive others. Many churches today have fallen hook, line and sinkerinto
the Devil's trap of allowing psychologists to enter the pulpit. Modern
psychologyis of the Devil.
I love the promises of God, for they are the powerof God in a believer's life. It
is the promise of God by which we are saved(2nd Peter1:4). Romans 10:13 is
a promise that WHOSOEVER calls upon the name of the Lord Jesus shallbe
saved. That is the same promise found in John 3:16, “ForGod so loved the
world, that he gave his only begottenSon, that whosoeverbelievethin him
should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Eternal life is a PROMISE from
God to those who come to Him for forgiveness ofsins by way of His only
begottenSon, Jesus Christ. Salvationis not a born-again experience nor a
feeling that one has been born-again; but rather, being born-again is a miracle
of God, where God honors His promise to save those who believe (John 1:12;
20:31).
1stCorinthians 15:1-4, “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel
which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye
stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keepin memory what I preachedunto
you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that
which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the
scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose againthe third day
according to the scriptures.”

(needful Windows Media sermons by PastorJeff Owens)
Here's a wonderful poem authored by PastorDanny Castle about the three
stages oflife; It's called“NO ROOM FOR JESUS” . . .
NO ROOM FOR JESUS...
No room for Jesus when I'm young and free,
No time for the church, or a Bible for me;
No room for Jesus when I'm a grown man,
I'm busy making a living, doing the best I can.
No room for Jesus, whenI'm old and gray,
I've lived goodenough, I'll make it my way;
Now as the time comes to die for me,
only it is now I am beginning to see,
When at Heaven's gates I stand and plea:
What a fool I've been, they'll be no room for me.

Have Room ForJesus?
Is Jesus Christ the Lord God Almighty?
by Robert K. Sanders
What Ellen G. White writes in her books, is to be believed as truth from God's
throne by Seventh-day Adventist Church members. She says that, "Jesus was
not the Lord God Almighty."
"There is no one who can explain the mystery of the incarnation of Christ. Yet
we know that He came to this earth and lived as a man among men. The man
Christ Jesus was notthe Lord God Almighty, yet Christ and the Father are
one. The Deity did not sink under the agonizing torture of Calvary, yet it is
nonetheless true that "Godso loved the world, that He gave His only begotten
Son, that whosoeverbelievethin Him should not perish, but have everlasting
life." SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 5, p. 1129-1130
Jesus "did not ceaseto be Godwhen He became man," and "that Christ and
the Fatherare one," which are true statements about the deity of God. It is
also true that the Father is the Lord God Almighty, but it is a false statement
to say, "that Jesus is not the Lord God Almighty."
Why would Godgive Ellen a false statement about himself? The truth is that
God did not reveal this, as God does not lie. The answersimply is this, Ellen
G. White is a false prophet.
What does Almighty mean, and does the definition apply to Christ?
From the Greek Almighty means,
3841. pantokrator, pan-tok-rat'-ore;from G3956 and G2904;the all-ruling,
i.e. God (as absolute and universal sovereign): -- Almighty, Omnipotent.
Strong's Dictionary
We then cansay yes, this definition describes Christ as all-ruling, Almighty
and Omnipotent.
Does the Bible tell us that Christ to be calledthe Mighty God? Yes.
(Isaiah 9:6 NIV) "Forto us a child is born, to us a sonis given, and the
government will be on His shoulders. And He will be calledWonderful
Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiahtells us that Jesus is to be called the Mighty God. God in Hebrew
means, 410. 'el, ale;short. from H352; strength; as adj. mighty; espec. the
Almighty deity, power, strong. Comp. names in "-el." Strong's Dictionary
This definition describes Jesus. We find the definition Almighty, meaning
Omnipotent, and God, as meaning Almighty deity. On this evidence alone
Jesus canbe called Almighty God.
Does Jesus callhimself the Lord God Almighty? Yes
Revelation1:7 (NIV) "Look, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will
see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will
mourn because ofhim. So shall it be! Amen."
(Revelation1:8 NIV) ""Iam the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God,
"who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."
Who is coming in the clouds? Verse 7, the one who was pierced. Jesus.
What is His name? Verse 8, the Alpha and the Omega, the Lord God, the
Almighty.
(Revelation22:12 NIV) "Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me,
and I will give to everyone according to what he has done."
(Revelation22:13 NIV) "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the
Last, the Beginning and the End."
Who gives rewards at His sooncoming? Verses 12, 13, the Alpha and the
Omega.
(Matthew 16:27 NIV) "Forthe Son of Man is going to come in His Father's
glory with His angels, and then He will reward eachpersonaccording to what
he has done."
Who is the Son of man that is coming in His Father's glory? Verse 27, it is The
Son of Man, (Jesus). Compare with the Alpha and the Omega, the Lord God
Almighty that is coming and was pierced, in Revelation1: 7,8.
(Revelation22:20 NIV) "He who testifies to these things says, 'Yes, I am
coming soon.'Amen. Come, Lord Jesus."
Who is coming soon? the Lord Jesus. Compare Revelation22:12,13 as the
Alpha and Omega.
Does It Make a Difference?
Becauseofthe authority given Ellen G. White by the Seventh-day Adventist
Church, many that read her statement that "the man Christ Jesus was not the
Lord God Almighty" will regardit as truth. What does this false statement do
to the deity of Christ? It says that the Father and Son are not really equal in
their deity and that the Father is the Lord God Almighty and Christ is
somewhatof a lesserGod.
This is very similar to the beliefs of the Jehovah's Witnesseswho believe that
Jesus Christ is not God equal to the Father, and regard Him as just "a god "
(with a small g). This is found in their New World Translationof John 1:1.The
Wittiness also believe that Jesus is a mighty godand Jehovahis the Lord God
Almighty. This gives Ellen G. White, the SDA Church and the Jehovah's
Witness two Gods, one that is Almighty and one that is not as Almighty.
The Truth
Jesus Christ is calledthe Lord God Almighty, and the Alpha and Omega,
Revelation1:8, the same as the Father is called the Lord God Almighty and
the Alpha and Omega. (Revelation21:5-6)
Almighty applies to Christ, from the Greek word "pantokrator," which
means all-ruling, Almighty, Omnipotent.
The Savioris equal to the Father, (Colossians 2:9 NIV) "For in Christ all the
fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form,"
God bless you as you lift up Jesus to His full deity as the Lord God Almighty.
Isaiah9:6, Jesus the Mighty God
by Luke Wayne
9/13/16
"Fora child has been born to us, A son has been given to us; And the
rulership will rest on his shoulder. His name will be calledWonderful
Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace,"(Isaiah9:6, New
World Translation)
The words of Isaiah 9:6 are one of the most powerful prophecies testifying
plainly and clearly that the promised Messiahto come would, in fact, be God
Himself born in human flesh. The child that is born, the sonthat is given, is to
be called "Mighty God." Jehovah's Witnesses, however, contendthat the
Messiahis not really calledGod here, at leastnot in the sense that biblical
Christians mean, because He is calledmighty God rather than almighty God.
They will concede that Jesus is a "god" in the sense of being a very powerful,
spiritual being, but He is not Jehovah, the one and only almighty God. This is
a very important distinction for Jehovah's Witnesses. It does not, however,
hold up very well under scrutiny.
Israelhas only one Godand is forbidden to call on any other God. Isaiahis
abundantly clear:
"'You are My witnesses,'declaresthe Lord [YHWH, or Jehovah], 'And My
servant whom I have chosen, So that you may know and believe Me And
understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, And there will
be none after Me,'" (Isaiah 43:10)
The word for "God" here is the simple Hebrew "el." The most basic word for
"god" and the same word used of the Messiahin Isaiah 9:6. If Jesus is the
Messiah, He is the "Mighty God" or the "el gibbor," and He is to be called
upon as such. But there is no other true, living Godbesides Jehovah. There is
no "el" but He, and His people are surely not to call on a false god for their
deliverance. Thus, even standing on its own, Isaiah9:6 is rather clearthat the
Mighty God on whom they are to call is Jehovahand not some lessergodthat
would by definition be a false godsince there is only one true God and never
will be another. Still, Isaiah didn't stop writing at 9:6. In the very next chapter
he says:
"Now in that day the remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacobwho
have escaped, willnever againrely on the one who struck them, but will truly
rely on the Lord [YHWH, or Jehovah], the Holy One of Israel. A remnant will
return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God," (Isaiah 10:20-21).
Who are they returning to? To the Lord, Jehovah, the one true God of Israel.
Here He is plainly called the "mighty God" [el gibbor] in the very same
prophetic context as Isaiah 9:6. Indeed, only a chapter apart from it! Jehovah
is the Mighty God. The Messiahis the Mighty God. There is only one God.
The conclusionhere is obvious. And the other prophets concur that Jehovahis
the "mighty God." Jeremiah, for example, pronounces:
"who shows loving kindness to thousands, but repays the iniquity of fathers
into the bosom of their children after them, O greatand mighty God [el
gibbor]. The Lord [YHWH, or Jehovah] of hosts is His name," (Jeremiah
32:18).
And Zephaniah lauds in similar terms:
"The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty [gibbor] one who will save;he
will rejoice overyou with gladness;he will quiet you by his love; he will exult
over you with loud singing," (Zephaniah 3:17).
Jehovahis certainly "almighty," but He is also rightly called"mighty" by the
prophets. He is the living God. He is the true God. He is the only God upon
whom we are to call. He is the only savior. Jesus is the "mighty God" upon
whom we are to call. He is our eternal savior. Jesus is Jehovah God.

Jesus is Almighty God
November 14, 2019 ColleenTinkerFeatured
In our podcastthis week, NikkiStevensonand I discuss who we understood
Jesus to be when we were Adventists and who we know Him to be now.
BecauseAdventists have learned “normal” Christian words to describe Jesus,
they don’t realize that their Jesus is not the same as the Jesus ofScripture.
For example, they learned that Jesus is “fully God”, but they don’t believe He
has all the same attributes as the Father. Rather, they believe that whateveror
whoeverJesus is, that is “fully God”, like a slice of apple is “fully apple”.
Ellen White, though, establishedthe Adventist belief that Jesus is not
Almighty God. In her 1903 Manuscript140 she wrote these words which have
been quoted in two later compilations of her work as well: “The man Christ
Jesus was not the Lord God Almighty, yet Christ and the Fatherare one.” In
fact, Ellen White insisted that the three persons of the Trinity were three
separate beings. She establishedthe Adventist belief that the Trinity does not
share substance, and she calledthem “The Three Worthies of Heaven” and
“The Heavenly Trio”.
It is not surprising, therefore, that Adventism denies that Jesus shares the
attribute of omnipresence with the Fatherand the Spirit. BecauseHe now has
a body, they teach, Jesus cannotbe present everywhere at all times. I learned,
in fact, that God sent the Holy Spirit because Jesus couldnot be present
everywhere.
A few weeks agowe receivedan email from a man who was struggling with
the identity of Jesus. He wrote that he had been watching the videos on the
Former Adventist YouTube channel and was enjoying them. However, he was
concernedbecause ColleenTinker“repeatedlysays that Jesus is ‘almighty
God’. Is there scriptural basis for this? Are there Scriptures to back this up?
Could you please kindly point me to a couple of scriptures that confirm that
Jesus is the almighty God?”
Following is my answerto him:
I Am
The Scripture reveals Jesus to be the I AM of the Old and New Testaments.
The book of John specificallyreveals His identity as being one with the Father
(Jn. 10:30). In fact, verse one of chapter one says, “the Word was God”.
As an Adventist I understood the phrase “Jesus is fully God” to mean that his
identity was “allGod”, sort of like a piece of pie is “all pie”, not a mixture of
pie and ice cream. But when I understood that He could not be God if he did
not have all the attributes of the Father, I realized that the Jesus I understood
as an Adventist was not really “God”.
To expand the pie metaphor, Jesus is not one-third of “God”, as one-third of
an apple pie is “all pie”. An apple pie may contain a stray seedor a piece of
peel, but those items would not be present in eachthird of the pie.
Consequently, one third of the pie might contain that seed; anotherthird
might have the peel, and the final third might have neither.
I thought of Jesus being “allGod” as one-third of a pie is “all pie”. That idea
was wrong. For Jesus to be “all God”, He must share the same substance as
the Fatherand the Spirit. Every single attribute of the Father must be shared
by Jesus and must be sharedby the Holy Spirit. If any attribute is missing,
that personis not God.
Thus, eachpersonof the Trinity must share the attributes of eternality,
omnipresence, omnipotence, and omniscience. To lack any attribute would be
to NOT be GOD.
The Adventist Jesus is not omnipresent. If He is not omnipresent, however, He
is NOT GOD. What I now understand is that Jesus, in spite of His having
takena body, is still omnipresent because He IS GOD. Colossians 1:16, for
example, says that Jesus createdall things. Verse 17, however, reveals
something even more surprising for an Adventist: “He is before all things, and
in Him all things hold together.”
In other words, Jesus’ role within the Trinity is Creatorand the One who
always holds all creationtogether. This fact means that He was holding all
things togethereven when His body was lying in the tomb and when He was in
His mother’s womb. He has never stopped being almighty God who is
omnipresent and holding all things together, evenwhen He took on flesh.
This is a mystery we cannotexplain, but the Bible reveals it is true.
Jesus also identified Himself as Yahweh, the I Am who revealedHimself to
Moses atthe burning bush. In John 8:58 Jesus saidto the Jews who mocked
him, “Truly, truly, I sayto you, before Abraham was born, “I am.”
“I Am” is the name with which God identifies Himself. Jesus declaredto the
angry Jews that He claims that name for Himself. He shares the name I Am
with His Father.
In fact, Jesus used“I Am” to identify Himself as all the things the Jews
understood God to be: I Am the light of the world (Jn. 8: 12), I Am the bread
of life (Jn. 6:48); I Am the resurrectionand the life (Jn. 11:25).
I suggestthat you read the gospelof John, asking the Lord to teachyou what
He knows He wants you to learn. It is a surprising book that clearlyreveals
Jesus’identity as almighty God! He is Godthe Son who shares the same
substance as the Father and the Spirit. The three persons all share substance;
there is one God expressedin three persons. This is a mystery we cannot
explain, but Scripture is clearthat Jesus has every attribute the Father has. If
he did not, He would not be God.

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, Godspoke to our fathers by the
prophets, but in these last days he has spokento us by his Son, whom he
appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he createdthe world. He
is the radiance of the glory of God and the exactimprint of his nature, and he
upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for
sins, he satdown at the right hand of the Majestyon high, having become as
much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellentthan
theirs.
Hebrews 1:1-4
Today's Scripture:
Mark 14:53-62
Romans 8:34
Ephesians 1:15-22
When we think of Advent, all sorts of images pop up into our minds. For some
of us, it might conjure up visions of glowing, multi-colored candles, crowned
by wreaths made of pine branches or holly. For others of us, our minds think
of 3-D countdown calendars that teachus patience is indeed a virtue, and one
best developedby the daily promise of treats and goodies. And then for some,
if we’re honest, Advent just wouldn’t be Advent without the seeminglyendless
nights spent sitting in front of our TVs—a bowl of popcorn resting on our
laps; our favorite glass ofsomething right beside us—watching too many all-
too-predictable, warm-feels-stirring, slightly self- indulgent holiday movie
marathons. Whatever they may be, we all have them: images we can’t help
but associatewith this very specialtime.
Little Lord Jesus
As Christians, our minds often conjure up one particular image around this
season. One ofa sweet, rosy-cheekedbaby boy, wrapped in swaddling clothes
(because around Christmastime, we also use words like swaddling clothes)
nestled in his mother’s arms. We spend the weeks leading up to Christmas
morning singing carols about silent nights and farawaymangers, brilliant
stars and angels heralding in the night, all of which are meant to remind us
that the “little Lord Jesus” has come.
The “little Lord Jesus,” who doesn’tcry when roused from his sleepby lowing
cattle. The “little Lord Jesus” whose arrival we awaitwith an anticipation
only love and joy and wonder caninspire. And the “little Lord Jesus” who is
nothing if not absolutelymeek and perfectly mild.
And these images canbe lovely. They connectus to happy memories of
Christmases pastand to the anticipation of Christmases yet to come. But the
thing about the image of the “little Lord Jesus” so many of us have inherited
from our parents or grandparents, church pageants, ormade-for-TV movies
is that it falls short of the image of Jesus we find in Scripture.
Yes, Scripture tells of a baby boy born on a night with a star and angels and
magi and mangers. But we sometimes forgetthat those events were anything
but peaceful. Thatlittle boy’s birth incited such fear in Herod, he ordered the
extermination of all male children two years old and under, living in
Bethlehem and the surrounding region (Matthew 2). So we can imagine that
for a Jewishmother mourning the death of her little boy, the image of the
“little Lord Jesus” wouldbe hardly comforting.
The truth is, when we experience loss, disappointment, betrayal, shame, fear,
the image of the “little Lord Jesus” doesn’tdo much to comfort us either.
Glorious Jesus
Thank God, the goodnews of Christmas isn’t that a baby boy was born in the
“little town of Bethlehem.” The goodnews of Christmas, what Advent is really
all about, is that on a seeminglyordinary night, the all-powerful Savior of the
world was born. The writer of Hebrews calls him “the radiance of the glory of
God,” who “upholds the universe by the word of his power” (1:3). This is a far
cry from the little Lord Jesus of our greeting cards. This Jesus sits “at the
right hand of the Majestyon high” (1:3), a place that speaks not only of His
honor, but ultimately of His power and authority. This is the Jesus whose
coming we await. This is the Jesus who is worthy of our trust and our
allegiance. And this is the Jesus onwhom all of our hope can restsecure.

My Name Is God Almighty
Resource by John Piper
Scripture: Exodus 5:22–6:8 Topic:The Glory of God
Then Moses turned again to the Lord and said, "O Lord, why hast thou done
evil to this people? Why didst thou ever send me? For since I came to Pharaoh
to speak in thy name, he has done evil to this people, and thou hast not
delivered thy people at all." But the Lord saidto Moses, "Nowyou shall see
what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them out, yea,
with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land."
And God said to Moses,"Iam the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and
to Jacob, as GodAlmighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself
known to them. I also establishedmy covenantwith them, to give them the
land of Canaan, the land in which they dwelt as sojourners. MoreoverI have
heard the groaning of the people of Israelwhom the Egyptians hold in
bondage and I have remembered my covenant. Saytherefore to the people of
Israel, 'I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the
Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage, and I will redeem you
with an outstretched arm and with greatacts of judgment, and I will take you
for my people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am the Lord
your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
And I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac,
and to Jacob;I will give it to you for a possession. I am the Lord."
I would like to help you believe in your heart this morning that: The
omnipotence of Godmeans reverence, recompense, and refuge, for his
covenantpeople.
If you belong to that covenantpeople my prayer for you is that this message
will
deepen your sense ofreverence for God,
increase your confidence that all the enemies of righteousness willbe justly
recompensedby God (vengeance belongs to God not to us!),
and encourage youto rest in the refuge of God's protecting powerin times of
distress.
If you don't belong to God's covenant people, my prayer for you is that when
you hear some of the benefits of belonging to an omnipotent God, you will bow
and accept the terms of his covenant, namely, obedient faith in Jesus Christ.
The Context of Exodus 5—6
Let's begin by looking at the context of Exodus chapters 5 and 6. Moses and
Aaron acceptedGod's command to go down to Egypt and to tell Pharaohto
let the people of Israelgo. But Pharaohresponds in 5:2, "Who is the LORD,
that I should heed his voice and let Israelgo? I do not know the LORD, and
moreoverI will not let Israelgo."
Instead of letting the Israelites go Pharaohmade their bondage more severe.
He forced them to make as many bricks as before, but gave them no straw.
They had to find their own.
So the foremen of the Israelite work crews came to Mosesand Aaron and
accusedthem of putting a sword in Pharaoh's hand to kill them (5:21). Moses
in turn cries out to God in 5:22, "O LORD, why hastthou done evil to this
people? Why didst thou ever send me? For since I came to Pharaohto speak
in thy name, he has done evil to this people, and thou hast not delivered thy
people at all."
God responds in Exodus 6:1, "Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh; for
with a strong hand he will send them out, yea, with a strong hand he will drive
them out of his land."
A Lessonin Passing
There is a lessonforus here that we should note in passing. Often when God is
about to bring a glad experience into your life, he let's it be precededby a very
discouraging setback. The burden of bondage in Egypt became heaviestjust
before the greatday of liberation. There are goodreasons why God does
things this way, but we'll save that for another message. Ijust wanted you to
see this in passing so that, if you are discouragedthis morning, you will hold
on to God until he stretches out his "strong hand."
Why God Reminds Moses ofGod's Names
Now in Exodus 6:2–8 God gives Moses the assurance he needs that God has
the ability and intention to deliver his people from the hands of Pharaoh. First
he reminds Moses ofhis name revealedback in Exodus 3:14. Verse 2: I am
YAHWEH! Verse 6: I am YAHWEH! Verse 8: I am YAHWEH! In other
words, remember that I AM WHO I AM. I have not ceasedto be God because
little Pharaohis huffing and puffing about your command. I AM WHO I AM.
I do not change. You will be delivered.
Then in verse 3 God reminds Mosesofanother name. He says, "Iappeared to
Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as GOD ALMIGHTY, but by my name
YAHWEH I did not make myself knownto them." Why did Godsay this to
Moses? How does this encourage MosesthatGod's promised deliverance is
really in the offing?
It seems that God's point was something like this: "The name YAHWEH is a
greatername than the name GOD ALMIGHTY. I did not reveal the full
meaning of my name YAHWEH to Abraham. Only recently have I made
known to you the meaning of my name YAHWEH. This is a specialprivilege
that your forefathers never had. But look at what name I did reveal to them—
GOD ALMIGHTY! With a name like that before them, they should have been
filled with confidence in me. How much more, then, should you, since you've
been given the fuller revelation of my characterin the name YAHWEH!" If
Israellearned the first-grade lessonthat their God is GOD ALMIGHTY, then
surely now, after the second-gradelessonthat God is I AM WHO I AM, they
will be all the more courageous.
Then in verse 4 God reminds Mosesthat what he did for Abraham as GOD
ALMIGHTY was establishhis covenantwith them to give them the land of
Canaan. In other words Godsays, "If as GOD ALMIGHTY I made a solemn
agreementwith your fathers to give them the promised land, then how much
more, now that you know me as YAHWEH, canyou have confidence that I
will deliver this people and fulfill my covenantpromise to bring them into the
land of Canaan!" Togetherthe names GOD ALMIGHTY and YAHWEH—I
AM WHO I AM—should give Moses allthe assurance he needs to press on
with the missionGod has given him in Egypt.
Today I want us to focus our attention on the name GOD ALMIGHTY. What
does it mean? The Hebrew behind the EnglishGOD ALMIGHTY is "El
Shaddai." But there is a greatdeal of disagreementamong scholars as to what
this word Shaddai means. My own opinion is that the translation
ALMIGHTY captures the essenceofthe word. Job37:23 leads me this way,
"The ALMIGHTY—we cannot find him; he is greatin power." There may be
other aspects ofthe meaning of El Shaddai, but the idea of power seems
central.
Three Things God's Omnipotence Implies About God
The name ALMIGHTY implies that God has all the might he needs to do
anything he wants to do. This view of God is confirmed over and over againin
Scripture. We callit the omnipotence of God. Omnipotent and almighty mean
virtually the same thing. In particular there are three things that God's
omnipotence implies about himself.
1. He Cannot Be Stopped from Accomplishing His Purposes
First, the omnipotence of God implies that he cannotbe stopped from doing
what he purposes to do. Daniel 4:35 says, "The MostHigh does according to
his will in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none
can stay his hand." If God purposes with all his heart to do a thing, it simply
cannot be stopped by any powerin the universe.
2. He Does WhateverHe Pleases
Second, the omnipotence of Godimplies that he does whatever he pleases.
Psalm115:3, says "Our God is in the heavens;he does whateverhe pleases."
In Isaiah 46:9–10 Godsays, "Iam God and there is none like me . . . saying
'My counselshall stand, and I will accomplishall my purpose'." GOD
ALMIGHTY is not like us. He can do whateverhe pleases. Ultimately the only
thing that determines what God will accomplishand what he won't is his own
will. This is what it means to be almighty or omnipotent.
3. His PowerIs Superior to All Other Powers
Third, the omnipotence of God implies that his power is superior to all other
powers. During the Summer Olympics one of the camera maneuvers taught
me something about the greatness ofGod. The opening and closing
ceremonies were thrilling to most of the people who saw them. The sheer
magnitude of the crowds and fireworks and music were a once-in-a-lifetime
experience of bigness and grandeur.
Those of us who watchedit on television could feel some of the thrill when the
camera was high enough to take in the whole greatsweepofthe coliseum. But
then something strange happened. The camera continued to recede into the
sky where it was perched in the helicopter, and the coliseumbecame smaller
and smaller until it was just a blurry dot on the ground.
As I watchedthat happen I was filled with joy in the greatness ofGod. I said
to myself, "Look how thrilled we are with a coliseumfull of colorand sound.
Look how we stand in wonder. Look how we shout and clap and feel
excitement at the splendor of it all. But look againfrom God's perspective.
Compared to his power and splendor, it's a blurry dot on the ground."
God puts on a minor display of his strength and splendor every morning as he
brings the sun up over the horizon—865,000miles thick, 1.3 million times
heavier than the earth, blazing on its cooledges atone million degrees
Centigrade!Every morning has its opening ceremonies to thrill us with the
powerand the glory of God and fill us with hope that one day we will enter a
land where all the wonders that have inspired us on this little earth will be like
blurry dots in comparisonwith the magnificence of God's eternal closing
ceremonies.
And every night God puts out a little puppet show of his majesty in the sky,
with Perseus and Andromeda and Hercules and Orion and Leo the Lion and
Draco the Dragonsporting about in the localgalaxy 100,000light years
across.
"Dayto day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge."And
what they teachso forcefully is that God is infinite in power. Nothing that has
ever awedyou cancompare to him. He is GOD ALMIGHTY! Nothing can
stay his hand. He does whateverhe pleases. He is the Potterand the universe
is his clay.
The Name God Almighty Means Three Things for Us
That's what God's omnipotence implies about himself. Now I want to focus on
what the name GOD ALMIGHTY means for us. I summed it up at the
beginning like this: The omnipotence of God means reverence, recompense,
and refuge for his covenant people. So now let's take these promises one at a
time.
1. Reverence
First, the omnipotence of God means reverence. In Job40:2 the Lord said to
Job, "Shall a faultfinder contend with the ALMIGHTY?" The fact that God
is almighty means that we may not contend with him. He may perplex us and
we may question him in lowliness forunderstanding, but not for indictment.
We may not accuse ourMaker. When we try, we set ourselves orsome court
of appeals above God, and that is a horrendous sin againstthe deity of God.
As St. Paul says, "Shallwhat is molded say to its molder, 'Why have you made
me thus?' Has the potter no right over the clay to do with it as he pleases?"
(Romans 9:20–21).
But reverence is a foreign emotion to fallen human beings. Most people do not
have any experience of reverence. WhereverGodis considereda pal or a
sidekick ora grandfather or the religious drug of the uneducated, he cannot
be revered. There are many affections you can feel for a little God, but
reverence is not one of them.
Isaiahsays, "The lord of hosts . . . let him be your fear, and let him be your
dread." (8:13). Reverence is the combination of admiration and fear, awe and
dread, wonder and terror. It's an emotion that we were made to experience.
And in its absence we create motionpictures and take vacations whichdo
their best to provide a substitute. We long to be awe-struck. We long for some
friendly terror and some joyful dread. And the only way we will ever
experience it is to know the Lord as GOD ALMIGHTY, the omnipotent.
2. Recompense
Second, the omnipotence of Godmeans recompense—arecompenseofwrath
upon those who do not believe the gospelof our Lord Jesus Christ (2
Thessalonians 1:8). John describes a scene in the book of Revelationof a white
horse with a rider who is called Faithful and True. His eyes are like a flame of
fire, he is clad in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is calledis
the Word of God. The armies of heaven are in his train. "From his mouth
issues a sharp swordwith which to smite the nations, and he will rule them
with a rod of iron; he will tread the wine press of the fury of the wrath of God
the ALMIGHTY" (Revelation19:15).
If God is almighty, one thing is for sure—no one who resists him cansucceed.
The arrogantand the unbelieving may seemfor a while to prosper. But, as
Psalm73 discovers, there comes a speedy end: "Truly thou dostset them in
slippery places;thou dost make them fall to ruin. How they are destroyedin a
moment, sweptawayutterly by terrors." It is utter folly and madness to
disobey the Almighty. He cannot be tricked, thwarted, or defeated. And he
has appointed a day when his Sonwill tread the wine press of the fury of his
wrath, because he is GOD ALMIGHTY.
3. Refuge
Third, the omnipotence of God means refuge. The opposite of recompense for
those who have refused the terms of God's treaty is refuge for those who have
accepted. Psalm91:1–2, "He who dwells in the shelterof the MostHigh, who
abides in the shadow of the ALMIGHTY, will say to the Lord, 'My refuge and
my fortress;my God, in whom I trust'."
Has it ever hit home to you what it means to say, "My God, who loves me and
gave himself for me, is almighty"? It means that if you take your place under
the shadow of the ALMIGHTY, you are protectedby omnipotence. There is
infinite and unending security in the almightiness of God.
The Shadow of the Almighty
It was not a slip up in 1958 whenElizabeth Elliot gave to "the life and
testament" of her slain husband the title, SHADOW OF THE ALMIGHTY.
Jim Elliot and four other missionaries to the Aucas were killed on January 8,
1956. In 1949 whenJim Elliot was a college student, he wrote the words that
have become the motto of many of our young people at Bethlehem: "He is no
fool who gives what he cannot keepto gain what he cannot lose."
Around the world the death of Jim Elliot and his four friends was calleda
nightmare of tragedy. But Elizabeth Elliot wrote, "The world did not
recognize the truth of the secondclause in Jim Elliot's credo:'He is no fool
who gives what he cannot keepto gain what he cannotlose'." She calledher
book SHADOW OF THE ALMIGHTY from Psalm 91:1 because she was
utterly convincedthat the refuge of the people of God is not a refuge from
suffering and death but a refuge from final and ultimate defeat. He who saves
his life will lose it, but he who loses his life for the sake of the gospelwill save
it—because the Lord is GOD ALMIGHTY.
God did not exercise his omnipotence to deliver Jesus from the cross. Norwill
he exercise it to deliver you and me from tribulation. If we have the faith and
single-mindedness and courage ofJim Elliott, we might find ourselves saying
with the apostle Paul, "Forthy sake we are being killed all the day long; we
are regardedas sheepto be slaughtered. No, in all these things we are more
than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death,
nor life, nor angels, norprincipalities, nor things present, nor things to come,
nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be
able to separate us from the love of God—the almighty God!—in Christ Jesus
our Lord."
Joy, Freedom, Power, and Obedience
The omnipotence of God means eternal, unshakable refuge in the everlasting
glory of God no matter what happens on this earth. And that confidence is the
powerof radicalobedience to the callof God. Is there anything more freeing,
more thrilling, or more strengthening than the truth that GOD ALMIGHTY
is your refuge—allday every day in all the ordinary and extraordinary
experiences oflife! Nothing but what he ordains for your good befalls you.
And afterwardhe will receive you to glory!
If we believed this, if we really let this truth of God's omnipotence get hold of
us, what a difference it would make in our personallives and in our ministry
as a church! How humble and powerful we would become for the saving
purposes of God! Paul speaks of"the immeasurable greatness ofGod's power
in us who believe." Arthur Mathews describes the secretof one of the revivals
in northern India like this: It was owing to "three renewed human wills that
by faith linked themselves as with hooks of steelto the omnipotent will of God
. . . yearning, pleading, crying and agonizing over the church in India and the
myriads of lost souls."
The omnipotence of God means refuge for the people of God. And when you
really believe that your refuge is the omnipotence of GOD ALMIGHTY, there
is a joy and a freedom and a power that spills over in a life of radical
obedience to the Jesus Christ.
The omnipotence of God means reverence, recompense, andrefuge for his
covenantpeople. I invite you to acceptthe terms of his covenantof grace:turn
from sin and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, and the omnipotence of GOD
ALMIGHTY will be the reverence of your soul, the recompense ofyour
enemies, and the refuge of your life—forever.

In the Bible, is Jesus the Almighty and the Alpha and the Omega?
Purpose
I receiveda comment from a reader which claimed that Jesus Christ knew
who He was, namely “the Almighty,” for that is exactly how He identified
Himself, and as the Alpha and the Omega.
I had a similar comment in the pastand thought that it might be wise to
respond by means of a short article. The purpose of this article is, therefore,
to determine whether the Bible applies titles “the Almighty” and “the Alpha
and the Omega” to Jesus, andthe implications thereof.
Introduction to Revelation
The phrase “the Alpha and the Omega” is found only in the book of
Revelation. Furthermore, of the ten times that the title “Almighty” appears in
the New Testament, nine are in Revelation. Forthis reason, this article
commences with a discussionof Revelation’s introduction.
Jesus is distinct from God.
Revelationbegins with the words:
“The Revelationof Jesus Christ, which God gave Him” (1:1).
This immediately sets a distinction betweenGod and Jesus. This distinction is
repeatedin the next verse:
“John, who testified to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ.”
The point is not that Jesus is distinct from the Father, for that all agree, but
that Jesus is distinct from God, which implies that Jesus is not God.
The same John who wrote Revelationalso wrote the gospelofJohn. The
opening verse of that gospelreads,
(a) In the beginning was the Word,
(b) and the Word was with God,
(c) and the Word was God.
Part (b) makes a distinction betweenGod and the Word, but part (c) informs
us that “the Word was God.” A series ofarticles on the website discusses this
and shows that part (c) has a specialgrammaticalconstructwhich should be
translated “the Word was like God.” This is, therefore, similar to Philippians
2, which says that, before His incarnation, that Jesus “existedin the form of
God.” Foris a discussionof these two passages, see:
John 1:1
Jesus in Philippians
Him who is and who was and who is to come
Revelation1:4-5 refers to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as follows:
“Him who is and who was and who is to come;”
“The sevenSpirits who are before His throne;” and
“Jesus Christ;”
“Him who is and who was and who is to come” is, therefore, a title for the
Father. The Fatheris also identified by this title is 4:8 (cf. 11:17). It is
possible that this title is an interpretation of God’s title in Exodus 3:14, where
“Godsaid to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM’”.
Since “the sevenSpirits … are before His throne,” the Father is the One who
is often mentioned in Revelationas “sitting on the throne” (4:2, 9, 10; 5:1, 7,
13), and who is identified as “our Lord and our God” (4:11) and as “God”
(5:9, 10; 6:16; 7:10, 15;19:4). Jesus said, “I also overcame and satdown with
My Fatheron His throne” (3:21). This confirms that it is the Father’s throne.
Jesus has a God.
1:5-6 continues as follows:
“To Him who loves us and releasedus from our sins by His blood—and He
has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father.”
The Fatheris therefore also Jesus’God. In 3:2 and 3:12 Jesus similarly refers
to the Fatheras “My God:”
“He who overcomes,I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he
will not go out from it anymore; and I will write on him the name of My God“
The keyverse
The purpose of the analysis above is to explain the first verse in Revelation
that refers to the “Almighty,” namely 1:8, which reads as follows:
“’ I am the Alpha and the Omega,’says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was
and who is to come, the Almighty’.”
For the following reasons, this is the Fatherspeaking:
(1) This is the One “who is and who was and who is to come,” who has been
identified above as the Father.
(2) He is describedas “Lord God,” and the previous verses three times made a
distinction betweenGod and Jesus, and once even said that the Father is
Jesus’God.
This distinction betweenGod and Jesus is a consistentpattern in the New
Testamentand in Revelation. See the articles:
Does the book of RevelationpresentJesus as God? and
The NT distinguishes betweenGod and Jesus.
The important conclusionis as follows:Since this is the Father speaking in
1:8, it is implied that the phrases, “the Alpha and the Omega” and “the
Almighty” do not refer to Jesus, but to the Father.
Almighty
As stated, the title “the Almighty” is used 10 times in the New Testament, but
only once outside Revelation. In 2 Corinthians 6:16-18 Paul quotes from the
Old Testamentand identifies “God” as “the Lord Almighty.” In Revelation
“the Almighty” is used as follows:
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was
and who is to come, the Almighty” (1:8).
“The Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come” (4:8)
“Lord God, the Almighty, who are and who were” (11:17)
“Those who had been victorious over the beast” sang, “Greatand marvelous
are Your works, O Lord God, the Almighty.” (15:2-3)
The altar says, “O Lord God, the Almighty, true and righteous are Your
judgments” (Rev. 16:7)
The “spirits of demons … go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather
them togetherfor the war of the greatday of God, the Almighty” (Rev. 16:14)
“A great multitude,” says, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty,
reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage
of the Lamb has come’” (Rev. 19:6).
“The Word of God … treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the
Almighty” (Rev. 19:13-15).
“I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its
temple” (Rev. 21:22)
In all nine instances, “the Almighty” is God. The last three instances make an
explicit distinction between the Almighty and the Son (the Word of God and
the Lamb). In other words, “the Almighty” is always the Father. This title is
never applied to Jesus.
Alpha and the Omega
On the other hand, Jesus said, “I am the first and the last” (1:17; 2:8). This
phrase “the Alpha and the Omega” describes the Father in 1:8, and appears
twice more in Revelation. 21:5-6 reads:
“He who sits on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’ …
Then He said to me, ‘It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning
and the end’.”
“He who sits on the throne” is the Father. In 22:12-13 an unidentified Person
says:
“I am coming quickly, and My rewardis with Me, to render to every man
according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and
the last, the beginning and the end.”
This could be Jesus, for:
(1) Jesus in 3:11 similarly said, “I am coming quickly.”
(2) Jesus is “the first and the last” in 1:17 and 2:8, and this title is never used
for the Father.
Whether 22:12-13 refers to the Father or to Jesus does notreally matter, for
Jesus is already explicitly called “the first and the last,” and this probably has
the same meaning as “the Alpha and the Omega.”
Conclusion
The question is then, how could Jesus be “the Alpha and the Omega” if He is
not “the Almighty?” This is explained as follows:
Firstly, God createdall things through Jesus.
John, who wrote the Revelation, also wrote, “All things came into being
through Him (the Word = pre-incarnate Jesus), and apart from Him nothing
came into being that has come into being” (John 1:3; cf. Col. 1:16). The term
“through” implies that God createdall things “through” the Word. This is
explicit in Hebrews 1:1-2:
“God… in these last days has spokento us in His Son … through whom also
He made the world.”
The different roles of God and the Word make a distinction betweenJesus
and the Almighty Creator. We need to recognize and respectthe distinction
which Revelation. and the rest of the New Testamentconsistentlymake
betweenGod and Jesus.
Secondly, Jesus is the Beginning.
The Personor Persons in 22:13 and 21:6 are also called, “the beginning and
the end.” Jesus is similarly “the Beginning of the creationof God” (3:14).
This is not understood as to mean that He is a createdbeing, for He has been
begotten. In fact, He is “the only begotten” (John1:14, 18; 3:16). “Begotten”
is human language for a mystery which beyond human understanding, and
which describes the origin of the Son.
If God createdall things through the Word, then the Word already existed in
the beginning. But the point here is that He Himself is “the Beginning:”
“He is the beginning” (Col. 1:18).
He is “the Beginning of the creationof God” (3:14).
Justin Martyr also describedHim as “a Beginning.”
It is therefore proposedthat God createdall things by begetting Him.
Thirdly, the Word upholds the universe.
A number of times we read that “in Him all things hold together” (Col. 1:17;
cf. Heb. 1:3). This conceptshould not be separatedfrom the conceptthat God
createdall things through Him: It is the same thing. It is therefore proposed
that God upholds the universe through the Word. (The term “Word” is here
used for the pre-incarnate Jesus, forthat is how John describedHim, not only
in His pre-incarnate state (John 1:1-3) but also when He returns to earth
(Rev. 19:13).
Therefore, He is the Alpha and the Omega.
To conclude; God exists beyond time and He createdtime. Jesus Himself is
the Beginning of time and of everything else. And since “in Him all things
hold together,” He is the entire existence ofthe Creation. He is, therefore, the
“Alpha and the Omega” ofthe creation.
But that does not make Him “Almighty” or equal to “the Almighty,” for it is
still God who createdand upholds all things “through” Him. Both the Father
and the Son are eternal, for both existedas long as time existed. Therefore
both are the “Alpha and the Omega.” Butthey are not co-equaland co-
eternal, as in the Athanasian Creed, for in the incomprehensible infinity
beyond time, the Father is the Great Source that begatthe Son.
Question:"What does it mean that God is Almighty?"
Answer: In Hebrew, the title "God Almighty" is written as El Shaddai and
probably means “God, the All-powerful One” or “The Mighty One of Jacob”
(Genesis 49:24;Psalm132:2,5), althoughthere is a question among most Bible
scholars as to its precise meaning. The title speaks to God’s ultimate power
over all. He has all might and power. We are first introduced to this name in
Genesis 17:1, when God appearedto Abram and said, “I am God Almighty;
walk before me and be blameless.”
God has many names and attributes. He is the Almighty (Genesis 49:25), the
Creatorof heaven and earth (Genesis 14:19), Builder of everything (Hebrews
3:4), the King of heaven (Daniel 4:37), God of all mankind (Jeremiah 32:27),
and the Eternal King. (Jeremiah 10:10). He is the only God (Jude 1:25), the
Eternal God (Genesis 21:33), the Everlasting God(Isaiah 40:28), and Maker
of all things (Ecclesiastes 11:5). He is able to do more things than we can ask
or even imagine (Ephesians 3:20). He performs wonders that cannotbe
fathomed and miracles that cannot be counted (Job 9:10). God’s power is
unlimited. He cando anything He wants, whenever He wants (Psalm115:3).
He spoke the Universe into existence (Genesis 1:3). Furthermore, He answers
to no one as to His plans and purposes: “All the peoples of the earth are
regardedas nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the
peoples of the earth. No one canhold back his hand or say to him: ‘What have
you done?’" (Daniel4:35).
When we see Godas the Almighty, we are struck by His powerand by the fact
that He is indeed a great, mighty, and awesome God(Deuteronomy10:17).
The identity of God as Almighty serves to establishthe sense ofawe and
wonder we have toward Him and the realization that He is God above all
things without limitation. This is important in view of how He is described
next in the Bible. In Exodus 6:2-3, Godsaid to Moses, “Iam the LORD. I
appearedto Abraham, to Isaac and Jacobas GodAlmighty, but by my name
the LORD I did not make myself known to them.” How is this significant? It
is significant because God, whom we previously knew only as God Almighty,
has now given a new, more personal and intimate name to Moses (andIsrael).
This desire on God’s part for a more personalrelationship with mankind
would culminate later when God Almighty sent His only Son to earth--God in
flesh--to die on the cross so that a way for forgiveness ofour sins could be
provided. The factthat God Almighty would humble Himself in this way for
us makes His name all the more remarkable.

I want to speak to you on 'Our Almighty God', and we're looking at Psalm 48
- only looking at one verse of it, but of course the contextis very important as
always - beginning to read at verse 1: "Greatis the LORD, and greatly to be
praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness. Beautiful for
situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north,
the city of the greatKing. God is known in her palaces fora refuge. For, lo,
the kings were assembled, they passed by together. They saw it, and so they
marvelled; they were troubled, and hasted away. Feartook hold upon them
there, and pain, as of a woman in travail. Thou breakestthe ships of Tarshish
with an eastwind. As we have heard, so have we seenin the city of the LORD
of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establishit for ever. Selah. We have
thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple. According
to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: thy right hand
is full of righteousness. Letmount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be
glad, because ofthy judgments. Walk about Zion, and go round about her:
tell the towers thereof. Mark ye wellher bulwarks, considerher palaces;that
ye may tell it to the generation following" - and this is our verse this morning -
"for this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto
death". Amen.
I wonder have you everconsideredthat the most important thing about
anyone is their thoughts of God?
As we come to the Lord, let us pray that the Lord's presence may be very real
to every heart gatheredhere this morning: Father, we cannotbetter the words
that we have been singing, because they are basedon Your word. We thank
You for this holy book. We thank You that it is God-breathed, it is without
error, it is infallible truth - but Lord, we thank You that it is not just a
conglomerationoflaws and rules, but it's a book that sets forth the eternal
God. We thank You that through Your truth we can know You, Lord. Lord,
whilst even language cannotdescribe the magnitude, magnificence, wonder,
majesty of Your person, we thank You that the Bible is Your chosenmeans to
declare Yourself. Oh Lord, we thank You that in the fullness of time You sent
Your Son, and in these lastdays You have spokenunto us through Your Son,
the Lord Jesus, the brightness of Your glory, the express image of Your
Person. Lord, we would see Jesus today, the Author and Finisher of our faith.
Lord, our eyes need to be heavenward. There is so much in this world to
discourage us, and to drag us down into the mire - oh Lord, lift our eyes
heavenwardnow, and let us see our God in His greatness, andour Saviour in
all His beauty. May our lives be transformed for seeing Godtoday. Help us
now, help me, Lord, I need Your help as we come to Your word now. For
Christ's sake, Amen.
I wonder have you everconsideredthat the most important thing about
anyone, the most important thing about anyone, are their thoughts of God?
What they think about the Almighty and, indeed, what they think about
Christ - 'What think ye of Christ? Whose Son is He?'. It is the most important
thing about you, what you think about deity. Indeed, I think it could be
proven, if you were to study history, that no people, nation or religion has ever
risen above its view of God. We hear our world view being talked about a lot
these days, but our God-view colours everything in existence. It will affect
religious belief, of course, most obviously, but it also affects national laws and
national politics. What we think about God affects the educationalpolicy of
the nation. What we think about God affects our own personaldevelopment
as we go through childhood, adolescence into adulthood, into maturity - but,
of course, of paramount importance: what we think about God and
specificallyHis Son, Jesus Christ, affects our ownpersonal salvation. Nothing
could be more important than that, therefore nothing can be more important
than what your thoughts are about God and His Son, Jesus!
Indeed, the Lord Jesus in that very famous passage, John14 verse 1,
emphasisedthis. We often think of that passage as to do with heaven, but
there's more depth than that in it. He said: 'Let not your heart be troubled: ye
believe in God, believe also in me'. You see, He was pointing out that He was
God's Son, and later on down the passage, verse 6, ofcourse Thomas said:
'We don't know where you're going, and we don't know how to getthere', and
He said: 'I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the
Father, but by me'. Now the problem, even for many believers today, is that
after their conversionto Christ they think very little about God. I'm afraid
that is to our detriment, and even more so when we considerthat we think
very little about God at the expense of thinking quite a lot about ourselves.
Christians tend to focus more today on themselves than they have everdone,
and the problems that they have more than upon their problem-solving God...
Indeed, a casualperusal of even Christian bookshops todaywould show you
where the emphasis lies. You can go to the self-help sectionof secular
bookshops, but our Christian bookshops seemto have them as well. You can
see there myriads of paperbacks, hardbacks, allto do with ourselves and the
problems that we have. Christians tend to focus more today on themselves
than they have ever done, and the problems that they have more than upon
their problem-solving God. One author I was reading recently happened to go
into a Christian store and was looking at the titles of many of the books, and
here were severalof them: 'Love Yourself - The Art of Learning to Love
Yourself', 'Living In Your Own Shadow', 'You Can FeelGoodAbout
Yourself'. He said that there was only one title of one book that he could agree
with, and it was entitled 'Leave Yourself Alone'.
The tragedy is that so often we are so preoccupied with ourselves that we
never think of God. Let me say that, even as Christians, you might engage
your thoughts with spiritual truth - and that is to be commended - but focus
little on the Personof the Almighty and how the reality of His greatPerson
and His attributes relates and affects our very real problems down here on
Earth. Now I think we all know Isaiah 26 verse 3: 'Thou wilt keephim in
perfect peace, whosemind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee' - but
too often our minds are focusedon our own things, but Christian: our minds
can be focusedon right things at the expense of the right One, the only One
who is worthy of our attention, and indeed the only One who can actually help
us in whateverneeds we have.
Sadly, today, I believe that Christians have been affectedby the spirit of the
age in many ways. One way is this, as A. W. Tozer put it: 'The spirit of the
age, evenin the Christian, spawns greatthoughts of man, and leaves room for
only small thoughts of God'. The Christian church today, I believe, has been
infected by low views of God. A. W. Tozerwrote on this many times, and in
one other portion he says:'The church has surrendered her once lofty concept
of God and has substituted for it one so low, so ignoble as to be utterly
unworthy of thinking, worshipping men. This she has done not deliberately,
but little by little and without her knowledge - and her very unawareness only
makes her situation all the more tragic'. I heard A. W. Tozerpreaching on a
recording, actually condemning what he calledthese 'teddy bear gods'that
men have made in their own image. He lamented that that was the cause of a
hundred lesserevils among the children of God.
What is your view of God like? J. B. Phillips translated a translationof the
New Testamentthat's quite well known, but he wrote another book and he
entitled it 'Your God Is Too Small'. Is your God, I mean your conceptof God,
too small? Well, in the lastverse of Psalm48, verse 14, we read: 'For this God
is our God'. Now let's not go on any further just yet: 'This God' - 'What
God?', we ask. WhatGod is 'This God' that the Psalmistis talking about? Let
us say first that this is not the nondescript God of post-modern pluralism.
This is not the God that all roads lead to that you hear about in the media and
in popular society. This is not the God who is contentto share space with
other gods, other deities, in some competitive trophy cabinet of world
religions.
This is not the God who is content to share space with other gods, other
deities, in some competitive trophy cabinet of world religions...
It is not the nondescript Godof post-modern pluralism, neither is it the
'cuddly toy' versionof Godthat we find in modern Christendom. What am I
talking about? Well, without going into too much detail, He is not the God
that many clerics have fashionedin order to be acceptable to a politically
correctsociety. This is not the God from whom has been extracted His wrath,
His righteous angertowards sin. This is not the God whom liberalism
presents, that has no exclusive rights and powerto redeemmen's souls.
Modern Christendom has devised and invented a God that canneither
condemn men nor save them, a God that can neither wound nor heal - an
impotent God.
Who is this God? Well, this God certainly is not the nondescript God of post-
modern pluralism, He is not the cuddly toy version of God of modern
Christendom - He is 'this God', the God of the Bible, the God of the Old and
the New Testament, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now we see
Him setforth graphicallyin Psalm48. Now you may have been confuseda
little, and you should be, as you read the Psalm - because the Psalmist
appears, apparently, to confuse the Lord Himself with the city of Zion. But
that is on purpose, because the presence ofthe Lord was to dwell in Zion, and
so what he is doing is: he is personificating the greatcity of Zion itself as a
depiction and an illustration, a representationof the greatnessofAlmighty
God who dwells in her. So He refers in verse 1 to 'a mountain of holiness',
Zion is 'beautiful for situation' in loftiness, she is the joy of the whole earth -
one of the wonders of the world, if you like - a royal city where the King
resides, where processions parade the streets in pomp and majesty. It's set
forth as a city where all the kings of the earth come to conquer, but when they
arrive Zion's strength and impregnability causes themto tremble and they
flee away!
The greatestNavythat was knownthen was from Tarshish, and she was no
match for the fortress of this city. It is an eternal city, the Psalmistsays - her
towers, her bulwarks, are without number. Her walls of defence are round
about her, and to look upon her would just take your breath away. There are
palaces ofsplendour that generations afterwill talk about and reminisce of.
What we have here is effectivelya presentation of the presence of God, as it
was manifest in the holy city of Jerusalem. Verse 1, it is spokenof as 'great'.
In the secondhalf of verse 1 'holy'. In verse 2 it is 'joyous'. In verse 3 it is 'a
refuge'. Verses 4 through to 8 graphically depict how it is a defence. Verse 9
speaks oflovingkindness, unfailing lovingkindness;verse 10, righteousness;
verse 11, justice - this is a picture of God, our greatGod!
Martin Luther was one man againstthe whole empire of the Roman Church.
You know the story, I'm sure, as well as I do. He had rediscoveredthe God of
the Bible, not the God of the church, the God of the Old and New Testaments
- incidentally, through translating the word of God. He found greatsolace
through Psalm48, so much so that he wrote a hymn that went like this:
'A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing...
...And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God has willed His truth to triumph through us'.
He is not the God that many clerics have fashioned in order to be acceptable
to a politically correctsociety. This is not the God from whom has been
extractedHis wrath, His righteous angertowards sin...
He had such a grasp of our Almighty God, this God, that through him and
severalothers - but particularly him in Europe - the Reformationcame, which
was a revival in the understanding of God's word: our God, who He is, a God
of grace that we canknow through faith. Our Almighty God.
Now God's omnipotence, His all-powerfulness as El Shaddai, Almighty God, is
a very favourite theme of the Bible. Take a few instances of it. We face, with
the characters ofthe Bible, some impossible scenarios - and yet God comes up
with the answer, becauseHe is the omnipotent God. You will remember
Genesis 18, Sarahlaughedat the messagethat came from God, that she was to
have a child so late in life. The answerthat came back was:'Is anything to
hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to
the time of life, and Sarahshall have a son'. You know that Jobexperienced
many tragedies in his life. We'll not list them, but you know how deep and
piercing his experiences were -and yet, at the end of them all, when God
beganto revealHimself in a new way to Job, in Job42 he said: 'I know that
thou canstdo every thing, and that no thought canbe withholden from thee'.
The God of the impossible!
He is found again, of course, in the New Testament - the Nativity story in
Luke 1:37. Mary was told, after exclaiming 'How shall this be, seeing I know
not a man?': 'For nothing shall be impossible with God'. In Matthew 19 a rich
young ruler can't getby his own pride, and the problem of humility comes
very forcibly on the minds and hearts of the disciples. They despair: 'If this
man, who has kept Your law so devotedly, cannot be saved - then who can be
saved?'. The answerthe Lord Jesus gave:'With men this is impossible; but
with God all things are possible'. In the book of the Revelationchapter 19,
after many events of the greattribulation period are passed, there are a group
of people who have been looking to heaven, where our help, and our hope, and
our salvationcomes from - and the Bible says that in a day that is yet to be,
that greatmultitude 'as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty
thunderings, say, Alleluia: for the Lord Godomnipotent reigneth'. God is in
control, God is the Almighty!
Oh, we could go on and on - Jeremiah32: 'Ah Lord GOD!behold, thou hast
made the heavenand the earth by thy greatpower and stretched out arm, and
there is nothing too hard for thee'. The Psalmistin 62: 'God hath spokenonce;
twice have I heard this; that power belongethunto God'. This God, what
God? The omnipotent God, the Almighty God, this is the Godof creation. Out
of nothingness, with a mere word He scatteredthe heavens and space with
stars, the planets across the universe - and even to this very day and
millisecond He sustains it all perfectly in equilibrium and harmony with the
powerof His word. This God is the God of the burning bush, He is the God of
the exodus that brought the children of Israelout of Egypt's bondage, the God
of the Red Sea who took them across that greatocean miraculously. This is
the Godof the smoking and the thundering mountain, where the law was
given - and this is the God whose finger wrote it upon stone, and we have it to
this very day. This is the God of the wilderness wanderings of the children of
Israel, who sustainedthe pilgrim people through the desertfor 40 years
supernaturally!
This God is the Godof the prophets, ordinary men who spoke the articles of
God, for this is the Godof the supernatural, this is the God of the miraculous.
This is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the God who
prophesied His birth hundreds of years before it happened. This is the God
who, by His Spirit, conceivedHis divine and yet human life in the womb of a
virgin teenager. This is the God who spoke to His Son and through His Son,
and wrought wonders in this world that it has never seennor will ever see the
like of! This is the God who, in Christ, reconciledthe world unto Himself. This
is the God who raised the dead corpse ofHis Son back to life again, which is
the greatestdisplayof God's powerin the New Testament. Is it any wonder
that Paul the apostle could cry with a heart of intercessionfor the Ephesians:
'I wish that you could know that power!'.
Modern Christendom has devised and invented a God that canneither
condemn men nor save them, a God that can neither wound nor heal - an
impotent God...
'What is the exceeding greatnessofhis powerto us-ward who believe,
according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ,
when he raisedhim from the dead, and sethim at his own right hand in the
heavenly places' - do you know that power? Do you know this God? I'm told
that poweris measured in megatons, and one megatonis the explosive
equivalent to a million tons of TNT. Well, that is nowhere near to the powerof
Almighty God! Isaac Watts put it like this:
'I sing the almighty powerof God,
That made the mountains rise,
That spread the flowing seas abroad,
And built the lofty skies'.
This God - what God? Almighty God- but something else:whose Godis this
God? 'For this God is our God' - whose God? Our God! Now I know this
Psalmis a Psalmof the Israelites, and He was the God of Israel - but, you
know, the New Testamentis all about this: that through His Son, the Lord
Jesus, this God canbe our God! He has come to show us Himself in His Son,
John 14 verse 1: 'You believe in God' - this God- 'believe also in me'. John 1
verse 18: 'No man hath seenGod at any time; the only begottenSon, which is
in the bosomof the Father, he hath declaredhim' - and so the miracle of the
incarnation is not just the virgin birth, but that the Lord Jesus Christ is God
walking among men!
There's a greatmystery where the incarnation is concerned. 'Without
controversy', Paul said, 'great is the mystery of godliness:God manifest in the
flesh'. We cannotknow everything about how His divine nature and His
human nature are related, but there's one thing that's absolutelysure: when
our Lord Jesus, the Word of God, came in human flesh - now listen carefully -
He did not ceaseto be what He always was, as God, but He became something
that He had never been, man. Why do I say that? Simply because Christis
God acting as Himself. Christ is God acting as Himself among men. The Lord
said to Philip: 'If you've seenme, you have seenthe Father'. The point here is
that our Lord Jesus Christ, when He came to earth and was clothed in human
flesh - though, as Philippians says correctly, He emptied Himself; He only
emptied Himself of the outward glory of deity that was manifest from before
the world began- but He didn't lose one attribute of His deity, that's an utter
impossibility. Everything that it means to be God, the Lord Jesus Christ was.
Now, of course, it is true generallythat, in His life down here on earth, He
voluntarily relinquished the use of many of His attributes. He chose to live as
a man among men, as a man totally dependent upon God - but He was still
God, and He still had all the attributes. There were times when that power
broke through, the Transfigurationis an illustration of that - but you
remember the Lord Jesus saidto the religious body of His day: 'Destroythis
temple, and in three days' - He didn't say 'God will raise it from the dead', He
said 'I will raise it from the dead'. In John 10 He says that 'The Father loves
me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it
from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have
powerto take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father' -
and this is the point: while He came in humility, and He didn't graspat His
divine attributes to live His life down here on earth, this is your Lord, if you're
a Christian today! He's as much Almighty God as the Fatherin heaven!
BecauseHe was made flesh, because ofHis incarnation, He now understands
what it is to be flesh. He never ceasedto be what He always was, but He has
now become something that He had never been: a man. He understands our
struggles:
'Jesus knows allabout our struggles,
He will guide till the day is done;
There's not a friend like the lowly Jesus,
No, not one! No, not one!'.
Now I want to challenge you just now: can you say'This God is my God'? Is
He your God? He's not your God if you're not saved!
But here's where the difference is made: not only does He understand it
because He was flesh, but because He is Almighty God He cando something
about it! Is that not wonderful? He canhelp us. Someone said, rightly so, 'As
Christians we never come closerto omnipotence than when we pray in the
name of the Lord Jesus'. I think that's wonderful. It's as if the Lord Jesus
were making the request of the Father! Now I want to challenge you just now:
can you say 'This God is my God'? Is He your God? He's not your God if
you're not saved! He's not your God if you have never come to the position of
realising that you're a sinner and realising that Christ was sent to die for your
sins, and that you by faith must partake of that. Oh, that today you would get
a glimpse of this wonderful God, and how He has revealedHimself in the
magnificent Saviour - you would say, like old Jacobas he vowed:'If God will
be with me, then shall he be the LORD my God'.
Is He your chosenGodand portion for evermore? Maybe you are saved, and
like many Christians - as I said in my introduction today - you have lostsight
of your God, of who He really is. You can't say, like Paul said, 'I know whom I
have believed, and am persuaded' - you don't know as sure as you used to,
you're not as persuaded as you used to be. Maybe there are situations in your
life that you think are insolvable, no answerto them - you're not listening: this
God is your God. This God is your Saviour, and:
'The Saviour can solve any problem,
The tangles of life can undo.
There's nothing too hard for Jesus,
There's nothing He cannot do!'.
Oh, it's wonderful. This God - what God? The Almighty God. Whose God?
Our God. Another question: for how long? 'Forever and ever'. Verse 14: 'He
will be our guide even unto death' - even unto death, and sure, anyway,
afterwards. If you're savedand He's your God, you'll be with Him after
death. This just means:for an eternity. Does that not mean something to you,
believer? 'Nevertheless I am continually with thee', the Psalmistcould say,
'thou hast holden me by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel,
and afterwardreceive me to glory... Surely goodness andmercy shall follow
me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever' -
for everand ever, even unto death.
Now I know - look - I know I'm not telling you anything new this morning.
You could have stoodup here and saidexactly the same as I've said to you,
but I think you're missing the point if that's what you're thinking now: are
you, in your heart of hearts, laying hold of this Almighty God? Our Almighty
God? Are you reckoning Him as your God? Is He the One whom your focus is
on in the problems you're in, in the crises that are going on in our nation and
our world, in your illness, in your domestic problems? Is this God real to you?
Many of us start to look within for strength, and you don't find it - and you'll
not find it, for looking within for strength is like casting the anchorinside the
boat, it'll do you no good...
Do you know what happens? Many of us start to look within for strength, and
you don't find it - and you'll not find it, for looking within for strength is like
casting the anchor inside the boat, it'll do you no good. Here's a formula you
need to remember, and it's been a greatblessing to me: 'To be occupiedwith
self will bring despair' - some of you know all about that, I do - 'To be
occupiedwith self will bring despair. To be occupiedwith others will bring
disappointment. But to be occupiedwith the Saviour will bring delight'. 'Thou
wilt keephim in perfectpeace, whose mind is stayed on thee'.
I love reading biographies, missionarybiographies, and stories ofChristians
of bygone eras. I read a story just last week aboutElizabeth Elliot whose
husband, of course, was martyred by the Auca Indians in South America. She,
later on in her life, visited China and went to a home of the China Inland
Mission. The story goes thatshe walkedinto that very sparse place, and she
saw a picture, a text on the wall - but it wasn't Scripture. It had a verse on it
that read like this, listen this is powerful: 'The sun stoodstill, the iron did
float, this God is our God for everand ever. He shall be our guide even unto
death'. If you don't know what those two things are, you need to read your
Bible more. The sun stoodstill, the iron did float. She went on to remark that,
having seenthat, listen carefully: 'This God, the One who, in answerto
prayers of an ordinary man, stopped the sun in its course, the God who
suspended His own law of gravity and made an axe head float, this is the God
to whom I come. This God is the One whose promises I am counting on - and
can He help me out of my predicament? Whatevermy predicament may be,
as soonas I compare it with the circumstances surrounding the miracles of the
sun and the axe, my doubts seemcomical'.
This God - what God? Almighty God. Whose God? Oh, if you're saved:your
God, my God. Forhow long? Forever and ever, even unto death.
Let's all bow our heads, just for a moment please, and just in the quietness -
because I'm afraid some of you are going to miss this, maybe most of you - two
words: This God, this God! The God of the Bible is your God, and I'll tell you:
He's not dead, and He's not asleep. He is the God who is, and is not silent - but
some of you, it's a long time from you've heard His voice, it's a long time since
you've seenHis face. Maybe it's a long time since you've been at the Table to
remember what He did? Oh, that you would grasp hold of this: He's your
God, and I'll tell you there's nothing, nothing, that will transform your life
more than that realisation.
Father, oh how pitiful our attempts are, and we say it reverently: even Your
holy infallible truth cannot communicate all that it is to be God, all that Your
poweris. Oh Father, may we be overwhelmed, and may our hardened hearts
be melted as we gaze upon the ungazeable, and we touch the intangible, as we
draw near to the One whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is
nowhere. Immortal, invisible, God only wise - and yet the One who, in His
Son, deigned to become fleshfor us. May we get a fresh glimpse of that now as
we linger at the Table, Amen.

Jesus was the almighty

  • 1. JESUS WAS THE ALMIGHTY EDITED BY GLENN PEASE JESUS IS ALMIGHTY GOD! By David J. Stewart 1stTimothy 3:16 says, “...Godwas manifestin the flesh...” Jeremiah32:18, “Thou shewestlovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensestthe iniquity of the fathers into the bosomof their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name.” The Bible teaches fromGenesis to Revelationthat Jesus was born into the world as the MANIFESTATION (revealing)of God to the world. The truthful Biblical doctrine that Jesus is almighty God is known as Christ's “deity.” Literally, the GODHEAD became fleshand walkedthe earth in the form of a man. Jesus was 100%man and 100%God. Now God is holy and is a Spirit (John 4:24). As such, man cannot fellowshipwith God the Father. That's why the Fathersent His only begottenSon, Jesus Christ, to bridge that gap. As human beings we cancommunicate with the man Christ Jesus, and then as deity Jesus cancommunicate with God the Father on our behalf. 1stTimothy 2:5, “Forthere is one God, and one mediator betweenGodand men, the man Christ Jesus.” Man could not enter into a union with God, but as God, Jesus can, and God could not enter into a union with man, but as man, Jesus can. So we contact the Man, Christ Jesus, andthe Father contacts the God, Christ Jesus;hence,
  • 2. man contacts Godthrough His Counsellor, and our Saviour, the God-man, Christ Jesus. SOURCE:'Prayer And The SovereigntyOf God,' from the book by Dr. Jack Hyles, 'Exploring PrayerWith Jack Hyles' Here are some excellentMP3 sermons on the three Persons ofthe GODHEAD by PastorJeff Owens... The Doctrine Of The Son | The Doctrine Of The Father | The Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit (2) There is nothing more important to Christianity than the fundamentals of the Bible (MP3, Dr. Owens)—the DOCTRINEOF CHRIST. The doctrine of Christ includes the physical blood of Jesus Christ, the literal virgin birth, Christ's deity as almighty God, His bodily resurrectionfrom the dead, His sinless life, et cetera. Only God Is Entitled To Receive WORSHIP,and Jesus ReceivedWorship Only Jesus acceptedthe worship of others (Matthew 8:2), because Jesus is worthy of man's WORSHIP! Jesus is worthy of every creatures worship! Only God Almighty is entitled to receive worship. The Bible teaches thatGod will NOT share His glory with another (Isaiah42:8). If Jesus weren't Almighty God, then He couldn't have receivedthe worship of so many people (Matthew 9:18;14:33;15:25;18:26;20:20;28:9). Jesus gladly receivedworship from people, as GodAlmighty is entitled to. Only Jesus acceptedthe worship of others (Matthew 8:2). Only God Almighty is entitled to receive worship. The Bible teaches that God will NOT share His glory with another (Isaiah 42:8). If Jesus weren'tAlmighty God, then He couldn't have receivedthe worship of so many people (Matthew 9:18;14:33;15:25;18:26;20:20;28:9). Jesus gladly receivedworship from people, as God Almighty is entitled to. Jesus is Almighty God!
  • 3. Notice once againthat all modern corrupt Bible versions remove every mention of the word “worship” concerning the Lord Jesus Christ, changing the word “worship” to a mere “knelt.” It is deceptionof the worstkind. Satan tried to take awayour Bibles, but failed. Then Satantried to cause us to doubt the Bible, as he did Eve; but failed again. Now Satanis changing our Bibles, trying to deceive us again. Sadly, most people have been woefully deceived. The New International Version is dangerous, as are all the other modern perversions of the Scriptures. Only the King James Bible is trustworthy. The Word Of GodBecame Incarnate (Flesh) In Jesus The Man Here is the strongestevidence from the Scriptures of Christ's deity... John 1:1-3 and 14, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. ... And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begottenof the Father,)full of grace and truth.” Jesus is the Word incarnate. God's Word is not merely a book with white pages and black ink; but rather, God's Words are living, as we read in Hebrews 4:12, “Forthe word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedgedsword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” God Words are alive (quickened) because Godis alive. The Bible contains over 7,000 promises (many repeated for emphasis) from God, some unconditional and many conditional. If a man authors a book and then dies, future readers may feellike they've personally knownthe author after reading his book. However, the author (Holy Spirit) of the Bible is alive forevermore!!! This is why Jesus saidin John 6:63, “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” There you have it...
  • 4. the Words of the Bible are spirit, that is, given by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (2nd Timothy 3:16), and they are life!!! Psalms 33:11, “The counselof the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.”Thatis precious to me, that is, the Bible is “THE THOUGHTS OF HIS HEART” to all generations. Whenwe read, search, memorize and study the Bible, we are learning the thoughts of God our Creator. The next time you getdiscouraged, openyour King James Bible and look for God's THOUGHTS on the matter, whateveryour needs or problems may be. This is why we are commanded wonderfully in Philippians 4:5, “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” Jesus' mindset was that of continually thinking about others. Jesus is the sweetestname I know, And He’s just the same as His lovely Name, And that’s the reasonwhy I love Him so; Oh, Jesus is the sweetestname I know. There is no name in earth or Heav’n above, That we should give such honor and such love As the blessedName, let us all acclaim, That wondrous, glorious Name of Jesus. JESUS IS GOD... ALMIGHTY GOD!!! The deity of Jesus Christis the most denied doctrine in this world by unbelievers. They vehemently hate the very idea that Jesus was born upon the earth as God incarnate (in the flesh). A “doctrine” is simply a teaching. Doctrines are composedofwords. Thus words are critically important. The greattheologicalbattles and debates of our generationare being fought over the meaning of words, whether it be the word “repentance” orthe word “inspired,” the spiritual battle is raging.
  • 5. God deliver us from deeper-life theologians who canquote the Bible, dissectit and expound upon it, but they never share the gospelwith their neighbors and let the world die and go to Hell. On my website ministry, I aim to encourage everyone to be a soul-winner. Proverbs 11:30 says, “He that winneth souls is wise.” That's one Scripture that you won't hear often from the intelligencia crowd. John 1:1-2 and 14, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. ...And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begottenof the Father,) full of grace and truth.” The word “Godhead” is found in Acts 17:29, Romans 1:20 and Colossians2:9 in the King James Bible. All modern corrupt Bible versions completely remove this criticalword, “Godhead.” Satanwants to deceive you concerning the Godhead. The word “Trinity” may not be in the Bible, but the word “Godhead” mostcertainly is. Why would anyone remove this word from the Bible? It's because the Devil wants to deceive you. Colossians 2:9 says, “...Forin him [Jesus]dwelleth all the fulness of the Godheadbodily.” Only God Can FORGIVE Sin, and Jesus ForgaveSin Jesus forgave sin as only God cando. WickedCatholic priests and evil Lutheran ministers sinfully claim the power to forgive people's sins. You'll burn in Hell if you trust men to forgive your sins. You'd better seek forgiveness from the God-man, Christ Jesus, Who has the nail-scaredhands and feet. Only in Jesus'name can anyone's sins be forgiven, for it was Christ Who died for OUR SINS. Even the wickedPharisees who soughtto kill Jesus weren't so wickedas to think that they could forgive men's sins... Mark 2:7, “Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who canforgive sins but God only?” As the Bible says, only God canforgive sins, and Jesus is God!!! In Matthew 9:2-3 we read that Jesus mercifully forgave a man's sins and healed him of a horrible disability...
  • 6. Matthew 9:2-3, “And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of goodcheer;thy sins be forgiven thee. And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.” Notice that the unbelieving Scribes accusedthe Lord of blasphemy for claiming the powerto forgive men's sins. Ah, but Jesus was Godin the flesh and did indeed have all the powerof Heavento forgive sin as only God can. Jesus did NOT give up His deity when He came to the earth; but rather, He humbled Himself as a suffering and obedient servant(Hebrews 5:8; Philippians 2:8). Only Jesus forgave sin in the Bible (Matthew 9:2). Only God Almighty can forgive sin. Jesus Is The I AM (God almighty) Jesus is the I AM of Exodus 3:14... Exodus 3:14, “And God saidunto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” The Jews pickedup stones to kill Jesus when He made the following claim... John 8:58, “Jesus saidunto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.” As you just read, Jesus directly claimed to be the I AM... God almighty!!! Amen and amen!!! Jesus is God Almighty, which He claims to be in Revelation1:8... Revelation1:8, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” Jesus claimedto be God in John 10:33... John 10:33 says, “The Jews answeredhim, saying, For a goodwork we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because thatthou, being a man, Makest Thyself God.”
  • 7. “MakestThyselfGod...” Searchthe Scriptures! In John 5:39 Jesus commanded, “Searchthe Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me.” Amen! The Bible testifies of Jesus. Revelation19:10, “...worshipGod: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” Here we are commanded to worship God; not the Devil nor the Antichrist. Alice Bailey's mentor was Helen Petrovna Blavatsky (1831-1891), who statedin her writings: “Lucifer is the LOGOS in his highest, and the 'Adversary' in his lowestaspect — both of which are reflectedin our Ego,” (The SecretDoctrine II; pg. 162). Blavatskyeven published a magazine in London in 1887 called, LUCIFER. She writes in one of her works that: “Satanis the god of our planet, and the only god,” SOURCE:The SecretDoctrine II; pg. 234 This is the truth behind the entire New Age Movement. Alice Baileystarted a publishing house in 1922 calledTHE LUCIFER TRUST. A year later due to public outrage it was renamed LUCIS TRUST, and is the spiritual foundation of the United Nations today. "No one will enter the New World Order unless he or she will make a pledge to worship Lucifer. No one will enter the New Age unless he will take a Luciferian Initiation." —David Spangler, Directorof Planetary Initiative, United Nations Satancan only deceive people who are woefully ignorant of the Words of God. If you SEARCHTHE SCRIPTURES forthe answers as Jesuscommanded, then you will be prepared to ward off demonic attacks againstyour faith. Ephesians 6:17 tells us that the Bible is our sword, our weaponto fight the Devil. Even Jesus Christ Himself used the Scriptures to defeatSatan when he was tempted in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-10). If Jesus neededto use the
  • 8. Scriptures, then why are churchgoers todaybuying all the New York Time's books on the BestSeller List? Max Lucado has written 2 books per year for over the past 22 years;and he promotes ecumenicalunity betweenCatholics and Protestants, betweenunbelievers and believers. The Bible teaches forus to divide over truth, instead of uniting by error (2nd Corinthians 6:14-17). I hope and pray that those who read this article will searchthe Scriptures concerning the Doctrine of Christ, and learn exactly Who our Lord Jesus Christ really is, because you'll be deceivedif you don't. Mark 13:22, “Forfalse Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.” Didyou read that... TO SEDUCE, IF IT WERE POSSIBLE,EVEN THE ELECT. The electsimply refers to every born-again Christian. The Bible teaches that times will become so deceptive that even Christians would be seducedif it weren't for the Holy Spirit of Godthat seals (Ephesians 1:13), protects (John 10:28) and guides (John 16:13) them into all truth. Thank Godfor His wonderful Holy Spirit and the precious Words of God. The doctorsays, “I practice medicine.” The attorney says, “I practice law.” The Christian says, “I practice Christ!” Jesus Is Almighty God If you geta King James Bible and study its truths as a born-again believer, then you will see the truth as John 16:13 promises. You will see the divine truth that Jesus is almighty God, and not just “a god” as JW's falsely claim. Only the Lord Jesus Christ has the powerto forgive men's sins. Only Jesus is worthy of worship and never tried to stop anyone from worshipping Him in the Bible. Amen! WORSHIP JESUS, for He is worthy! Wise men still seek Him today and WORSHIP Him!!! Matthew 2:2, “Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? forwe have seenhis star in the east, and are come to worship him.” Notice also that the wise men followedthe holy Scriptures and not the star. The Bible, Daniel's prophecy, told the Chaldeanscholars in Babylon about the star, and then they followedit because they were wise, wanting to bless and worship the prophesied Saviour, Christ the Lord!
  • 9. There are thousands of websites promoting mind, body and spirit teachings that are completely lacking of the Doctrine of Christ. They are websites published by heathens, psychologists, witches and New Agers. They are all Christ-rejecters, althoughthey may vaguely mention some teachings of Christ to deceive others. Many churches today have fallen hook, line and sinkerinto the Devil's trap of allowing psychologists to enter the pulpit. Modern psychologyis of the Devil. I love the promises of God, for they are the powerof God in a believer's life. It is the promise of God by which we are saved(2nd Peter1:4). Romans 10:13 is a promise that WHOSOEVER calls upon the name of the Lord Jesus shallbe saved. That is the same promise found in John 3:16, “ForGod so loved the world, that he gave his only begottenSon, that whosoeverbelievethin him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Eternal life is a PROMISE from God to those who come to Him for forgiveness ofsins by way of His only begottenSon, Jesus Christ. Salvationis not a born-again experience nor a feeling that one has been born-again; but rather, being born-again is a miracle of God, where God honors His promise to save those who believe (John 1:12; 20:31). 1stCorinthians 15:1-4, “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keepin memory what I preachedunto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose againthe third day according to the scriptures.” The Virgin Birth | Jesus Christ Literally Arose from the Grave (needful Windows Media sermons by PastorJeff Owens) Here's a wonderful poem authored by PastorDanny Castle about the three stages oflife; It's called“NO ROOM FOR JESUS” . . . NO ROOM FOR JESUS... No room for Jesus when I'm young and free,
  • 10. No time for the church, or a Bible for me; No room for Jesus when I'm a grown man, I'm busy making a living, doing the best I can. No room for Jesus, whenI'm old and gray, I've lived goodenough, I'll make it my way; Now as the time comes to die for me, only it is now I am beginning to see, When at Heaven's gates I stand and plea: What a fool I've been, they'll be no room for me. SOURCE:PastorDanny Castle;from the awesome sermontitled, Do You Have Room ForJesus? Is Jesus Christ the Lord God Almighty? by Robert K. Sanders What Ellen G. White writes in her books, is to be believed as truth from God's throne by Seventh-day Adventist Church members. She says that, "Jesus was not the Lord God Almighty." "There is no one who can explain the mystery of the incarnation of Christ. Yet we know that He came to this earth and lived as a man among men. The man Christ Jesus was notthe Lord God Almighty, yet Christ and the Father are one. The Deity did not sink under the agonizing torture of Calvary, yet it is
  • 11. nonetheless true that "Godso loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoeverbelievethin Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 5, p. 1129-1130 Jesus "did not ceaseto be Godwhen He became man," and "that Christ and the Fatherare one," which are true statements about the deity of God. It is also true that the Father is the Lord God Almighty, but it is a false statement to say, "that Jesus is not the Lord God Almighty." Why would Godgive Ellen a false statement about himself? The truth is that God did not reveal this, as God does not lie. The answersimply is this, Ellen G. White is a false prophet. What does Almighty mean, and does the definition apply to Christ? From the Greek Almighty means, 3841. pantokrator, pan-tok-rat'-ore;from G3956 and G2904;the all-ruling, i.e. God (as absolute and universal sovereign): -- Almighty, Omnipotent. Strong's Dictionary We then cansay yes, this definition describes Christ as all-ruling, Almighty and Omnipotent. Does the Bible tell us that Christ to be calledthe Mighty God? Yes. (Isaiah 9:6 NIV) "Forto us a child is born, to us a sonis given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be calledWonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiahtells us that Jesus is to be called the Mighty God. God in Hebrew means, 410. We find the definition Almighty, meaning Omnipotent, and God, as meaning Almighty deity. On this evidence alone Jesus canbe called Almighty God. Does Jesus callhimself the Lord God Almighty? Yes

Amen." (Revelation1:8 NIV) ""Iam the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." Who is coming in the clouds? Verse 7, the one who was pierced. Jesus. What is His name? Verse 8, the Alpha and the Omega, the Lord God, the Almighty. (Revelation22:12 NIV) "Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done." (Revelation22:13 NIV) "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." Who gives rewards at His sooncoming? Verses 12, 13, the Alpha and the Omega. • 13. to the deity of Christ? It says that the Father and Son are not really equal in their deity and that the Father is the Lord God Almighty and Christ is somewhatof a lesserGod. This is very similar to the beliefs of the Jehovah's Witnesseswho believe that Jesus Christ is not God equal to the Father, and regard Him as just "a god " (with a small g). This is found in their New World Translationof John 1:1.The Wittiness also believe that Jesus is a mighty godand Jehovahis the Lord God Almighty. This gives Ellen G. White, the SDA Church and the Jehovah's Witness two Gods, one that is Almighty and one that is not as Almighty. The Truth Jesus Christ is calledthe Lord God Almighty, and the Alpha and Omega, Revelation1:8, the same as the Father is called the Lord God Almighty and the Alpha and Omega. (Revelation21:5-6) Almighty applies to Christ, from the Greek word "pantokrator," which means all-ruling, Almighty, Omnipotent. The Savioris equal to the Father, (Colossians 2:9 NIV) "For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form," God bless you as you lift up Jesus to His full deity as the Lord God Almighty. Isaiah9:6, Jesus the Mighty God by Luke Wayne 9/13/16 "Fora child has been born to us, A son has been given to us; And the rulership will rest on his shoulder. His name will be calledWonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace,"(Isaiah9:6, New World Translation)
  • 14. The words of Isaiah 9:6 are one of the most powerful prophecies testifying plainly and clearly that the promised Messiahto come would, in fact, be God Himself born in human flesh. The child that is born, the sonthat is given, is to be called "Mighty God." Jehovah's Witnesses, however, contendthat the Messiahis not really calledGod here, at leastnot in the sense that biblical Christians mean, because He is calledmighty God rather than almighty God. They will concede that Jesus is a "god" in the sense of being a very powerful, spiritual being, but He is not Jehovah, the one and only almighty God. This is a very important distinction for Jehovah's Witnesses. It does not, however, hold up very well under scrutiny. Israelhas only one Godand is forbidden to call on any other God. Isaiahis abundantly clear: "'You are My witnesses,'declaresthe Lord [YHWH, or Jehovah], 'And My servant whom I have chosen, So that you may know and believe Me And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, And there will be none after Me,'" (Isaiah 43:10) The word for "God" here is the simple Hebrew "el." The most basic word for "god" and the same word used of the Messiahin Isaiah 9:6. If Jesus is the Messiah, He is the "Mighty God" or the "el gibbor," and He is to be called upon as such. But there is no other true, living Godbesides Jehovah. There is no "el" but He, and His people are surely not to call on a false god for their deliverance. Thus, even standing on its own, Isaiah9:6 is rather clearthat the Mighty God on whom they are to call is Jehovahand not some lessergodthat would by definition be a false godsince there is only one true God and never will be another. Still, Isaiah didn't stop writing at 9:6. In the very next chapter he says: "Now in that day the remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacobwho have escaped, willnever againrely on the one who struck them, but will truly rely on the Lord [YHWH, or Jehovah], the Holy One of Israel. A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God," (Isaiah 10:20-21). Who are they returning to? To the Lord, Jehovah, the one true God of Israel. Here He is plainly called the "mighty God" [el gibbor] in the very same
  • 15. prophetic context as Isaiah 9:6. Indeed, only a chapter apart from it! Jehovah is the Mighty God. The Messiahis the Mighty God. There is only one God. The conclusionhere is obvious. And the other prophets concur that Jehovahis the "mighty God." Jeremiah, for example, pronounces: "who shows loving kindness to thousands, but repays the iniquity of fathers into the bosom of their children after them, O greatand mighty God [el gibbor]. The Lord [YHWH, or Jehovah] of hosts is His name," (Jeremiah 32:18). And Zephaniah lauds in similar terms: "The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty [gibbor] one who will save;he will rejoice overyou with gladness;he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing," (Zephaniah 3:17). Jehovahis certainly "almighty," but He is also rightly called"mighty" by the prophets. He is the living God. He is the true God. He is the only God upon whom we are to call. He is the only savior. Jesus is the "mighty God" upon whom we are to call. He is our eternal savior. Jesus is Jehovah God. This chart will prove from the Old Testament& The New Testament that Jesus Christ is God Almighty. St. John 8:24 "Howbeit, There Is NotIn Every Man That Knowledge" I Corinthians 8:7 https://www.truthofgod.com/jesus-christ-is-god-almighty Jesus is Almighty God November 14, 2019 ColleenTinkerFeatured In our podcastthis week, NikkiStevensonand I discuss who we understood Jesus to be when we were Adventists and who we know Him to be now. BecauseAdventists have learned “normal” Christian words to describe Jesus, they don’t realize that their Jesus is not the same as the Jesus ofScripture. For example, they learned that Jesus is “fully God”, but they don’t believe He has all the same attributes as the Father. Rather, they believe that whateveror whoeverJesus is, that is “fully God”, like a slice of apple is “fully apple”. Ellen White, though, establishedthe Adventist belief that Jesus is not Almighty God. In her 1903 Manuscript140 she wrote these words which have been quoted in two later compilations of her work as well: “The man Christ Jesus was not the Lord God Almighty, yet Christ and the Fatherare one.” In fact, Ellen White insisted that the three persons of the Trinity were three separate beings. She establishedthe Adventist belief that the Trinity does not share substance, and she calledthem “The Three Worthies of Heaven” and “The Heavenly Trio”. It is not surprising, therefore, that Adventism denies that Jesus shares the attribute of omnipresence with the Fatherand the Spirit. BecauseHe now has a body, they teach, Jesus cannotbe present everywhere at all times. I learned,
  • 28. in fact, that God sent the Holy Spirit because Jesus couldnot be present everywhere. A few weeks agowe receivedan email from a man who was struggling with the identity of Jesus. He wrote that he had been watching the videos on the Former Adventist YouTube channel and was enjoying them. However, he was concernedbecause ColleenTinker“repeatedlysays that Jesus is ‘almighty God’. Is there scriptural basis for this? Are there Scriptures to back this up? Could you please kindly point me to a couple of scriptures that confirm that Jesus is the almighty God?” Following is my answerto him: I Am The Scripture reveals Jesus to be the I AM of the Old and New Testaments. The book of John specificallyreveals His identity as being one with the Father (Jn. 10:30). In fact, verse one of chapter one says, “the Word was God”. As an Adventist I understood the phrase “Jesus is fully God” to mean that his identity was “allGod”, sort of like a piece of pie is “all pie”, not a mixture of pie and ice cream. But when I understood that He could not be God if he did not have all the attributes of the Father, I realized that the Jesus I understood as an Adventist was not really “God”. To expand the pie metaphor, Jesus is not one-third of “God”, as one-third of an apple pie is “all pie”. An apple pie may contain a stray seedor a piece of peel, but those items would not be present in eachthird of the pie. Consequently, one third of the pie might contain that seed; anotherthird might have the peel, and the final third might have neither. I thought of Jesus being “allGod” as one-third of a pie is “all pie”. That idea was wrong. For Jesus to be “all God”, He must share the same substance as the Fatherand the Spirit. Every single attribute of the Father must be shared by Jesus and must be sharedby the Holy Spirit. If any attribute is missing, that personis not God.
  • 29. Thus, eachpersonof the Trinity must share the attributes of eternality, omnipresence, omnipotence, and omniscience. To lack any attribute would be to NOT be GOD. The Adventist Jesus is not omnipresent. If He is not omnipresent, however, He is NOT GOD. What I now understand is that Jesus, in spite of His having takena body, is still omnipresent because He IS GOD. Colossians 1:16, for example, says that Jesus createdall things. Verse 17, however, reveals something even more surprising for an Adventist: “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” In other words, Jesus’ role within the Trinity is Creatorand the One who always holds all creationtogether. This fact means that He was holding all things togethereven when His body was lying in the tomb and when He was in His mother’s womb. He has never stopped being almighty God who is omnipresent and holding all things together, evenwhen He took on flesh. This is a mystery we cannotexplain, but the Bible reveals it is true. Jesus also identified Himself as Yahweh, the I Am who revealedHimself to Moses atthe burning bush. In John 8:58 Jesus saidto the Jews who mocked him, “Truly, truly, I sayto you, before Abraham was born, “I am.” “I Am” is the name with which God identifies Himself. Jesus declaredto the angry Jews that He claims that name for Himself. He shares the name I Am with His Father. In fact, Jesus used“I Am” to identify Himself as all the things the Jews understood God to be: I Am the light of the world (Jn. 8: 12), I Am the bread of life (Jn. 6:48); I Am the resurrectionand the life (Jn. 11:25). I suggestthat you read the gospelof John, asking the Lord to teachyou what He knows He wants you to learn. It is a surprising book that clearlyreveals Jesus’identity as almighty God! He is Godthe Son who shares the same substance as the Father and the Spirit. The three persons all share substance; there is one God expressedin three persons. This is a mystery we cannot explain, but Scripture is clearthat Jesus has every attribute the Father has. If he did not, He would not be God.
  • 30. http://blog.lifeassuranceministries.org/2019/11/14/jesus-is-almighty-god/ Long ago, at many times and in many ways, Godspoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spokento us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he createdthe world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exactimprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he satdown at the right hand of the Majestyon high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellentthan theirs. Hebrews 1:1-4 Today's Scripture: Mark 14:53-62 Romans 8:34 Ephesians 1:15-22 When we think of Advent, all sorts of images pop up into our minds. For some of us, it might conjure up visions of glowing, multi-colored candles, crowned by wreaths made of pine branches or holly. For others of us, our minds think of 3-D countdown calendars that teachus patience is indeed a virtue, and one best developedby the daily promise of treats and goodies. And then for some, if we’re honest, Advent just wouldn’t be Advent without the seeminglyendless nights spent sitting in front of our TVs—a bowl of popcorn resting on our laps; our favorite glass ofsomething right beside us—watching too many all- too-predictable, warm-feels-stirring, slightly self- indulgent holiday movie marathons. Whatever they may be, we all have them: images we can’t help but associatewith this very specialtime. Little Lord Jesus
  • 31. As Christians, our minds often conjure up one particular image around this season. One ofa sweet, rosy-cheekedbaby boy, wrapped in swaddling clothes (because around Christmastime, we also use words like swaddling clothes) nestled in his mother’s arms. We spend the weeks leading up to Christmas morning singing carols about silent nights and farawaymangers, brilliant stars and angels heralding in the night, all of which are meant to remind us that the “little Lord Jesus” has come. The “little Lord Jesus,” who doesn’tcry when roused from his sleepby lowing cattle. The “little Lord Jesus” whose arrival we awaitwith an anticipation only love and joy and wonder caninspire. And the “little Lord Jesus” who is nothing if not absolutelymeek and perfectly mild. And these images canbe lovely. They connectus to happy memories of Christmases pastand to the anticipation of Christmases yet to come. But the thing about the image of the “little Lord Jesus” so many of us have inherited from our parents or grandparents, church pageants, ormade-for-TV movies is that it falls short of the image of Jesus we find in Scripture. Yes, Scripture tells of a baby boy born on a night with a star and angels and magi and mangers. But we sometimes forgetthat those events were anything but peaceful. Thatlittle boy’s birth incited such fear in Herod, he ordered the extermination of all male children two years old and under, living in Bethlehem and the surrounding region (Matthew 2). So we can imagine that for a Jewishmother mourning the death of her little boy, the image of the “little Lord Jesus” wouldbe hardly comforting. The truth is, when we experience loss, disappointment, betrayal, shame, fear, the image of the “little Lord Jesus” doesn’tdo much to comfort us either. Glorious Jesus Thank God, the goodnews of Christmas isn’t that a baby boy was born in the “little town of Bethlehem.” The goodnews of Christmas, what Advent is really all about, is that on a seeminglyordinary night, the all-powerful Savior of the world was born. The writer of Hebrews calls him “the radiance of the glory of God,” who “upholds the universe by the word of his power” (1:3). This is a far

Why didst thou ever send me? For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he has done evil to this people, and thou hast not delivered thy people at all." But the Lord saidto Moses, "Nowyou shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them out, yea, with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land." And God said to Moses,"Iam the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as GodAlmighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them. I also establishedmy covenantwith them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they dwelt as sojourners. MoreoverI have heard the groaning of the people of Israelwhom the Egyptians hold in bondage and I have remembered my covenant. • 33. for my people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. And I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob;I will give it to you for a possession. I am the Lord." I would like to help you believe in your heart this morning that: The omnipotence of Godmeans reverence, recompense, and refuge, for his covenantpeople. If you belong to that covenantpeople my prayer for you is that this message will deepen your sense ofreverence for God, increase your confidence that all the enemies of righteousness willbe justly recompensedby God (vengeance belongs to God not to us!), and encourage youto rest in the refuge of God's protecting powerin times of distress. If you don't belong to God's covenant people, my prayer for you is that when you hear some of the benefits of belonging to an omnipotent God, you will bow and accept the terms of his covenant, namely, obedient faith in Jesus Christ. The Context of Exodus 5—6 Let's begin by looking at the context of Exodus chapters 5 and 6. Moses and Aaron acceptedGod's command to go down to Egypt and to tell Pharaohto let the people of Israelgo. But Pharaohresponds in 5:2, "Who is the LORD, that I should heed his voice and let Israelgo? I do not know the LORD, and moreoverI will not let Israelgo." Instead of letting the Israelites go Pharaohmade their bondage more severe. He forced them to make as many bricks as before, but gave them no straw. They had to find their own. So the foremen of the Israelite work crews came to Mosesand Aaron and accusedthem of putting a sword in Pharaoh's hand to kill them (5:21). Moses
  • 34. in turn cries out to God in 5:22, "O LORD, why hastthou done evil to this people? Why didst thou ever send me? For since I came to Pharaohto speak in thy name, he has done evil to this people, and thou hast not delivered thy people at all." God responds in Exodus 6:1, "Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them out, yea, with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land." A Lessonin Passing There is a lessonforus here that we should note in passing. Often when God is about to bring a glad experience into your life, he let's it be precededby a very discouraging setback. The burden of bondage in Egypt became heaviestjust before the greatday of liberation. There are goodreasons why God does things this way, but we'll save that for another message. Ijust wanted you to see this in passing so that, if you are discouragedthis morning, you will hold on to God until he stretches out his "strong hand." Why God Reminds Moses ofGod's Names Now in Exodus 6:2–8 God gives Moses the assurance he needs that God has the ability and intention to deliver his people from the hands of Pharaoh. First he reminds Moses ofhis name revealedback in Exodus 3:14. Verse 2: I am YAHWEH! Verse 6: I am YAHWEH! Verse 8: I am YAHWEH! In other words, remember that I AM WHO I AM. I have not ceasedto be God because little Pharaohis huffing and puffing about your command. I AM WHO I AM. I do not change. You will be delivered. Then in verse 3 God reminds Mosesofanother name. He says, "Iappeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as GOD ALMIGHTY, but by my name YAHWEH I did not make myself knownto them." Why did Godsay this to Moses? How does this encourage MosesthatGod's promised deliverance is really in the offing?
  • 35. It seems that God's point was something like this: "The name YAHWEH is a greatername than the name GOD ALMIGHTY. I did not reveal the full meaning of my name YAHWEH to Abraham. Only recently have I made known to you the meaning of my name YAHWEH. This is a specialprivilege that your forefathers never had. But look at what name I did reveal to them— GOD ALMIGHTY! With a name like that before them, they should have been filled with confidence in me. How much more, then, should you, since you've been given the fuller revelation of my characterin the name YAHWEH!" If Israellearned the first-grade lessonthat their God is GOD ALMIGHTY, then surely now, after the second-gradelessonthat God is I AM WHO I AM, they will be all the more courageous. Then in verse 4 God reminds Mosesthat what he did for Abraham as GOD ALMIGHTY was establishhis covenantwith them to give them the land of Canaan. In other words Godsays, "If as GOD ALMIGHTY I made a solemn agreementwith your fathers to give them the promised land, then how much more, now that you know me as YAHWEH, canyou have confidence that I will deliver this people and fulfill my covenantpromise to bring them into the land of Canaan!" Togetherthe names GOD ALMIGHTY and YAHWEH—I AM WHO I AM—should give Moses allthe assurance he needs to press on with the missionGod has given him in Egypt. Today I want us to focus our attention on the name GOD ALMIGHTY. What does it mean? The Hebrew behind the EnglishGOD ALMIGHTY is "El Shaddai." But there is a greatdeal of disagreementamong scholars as to what this word Shaddai means. My own opinion is that the translation ALMIGHTY captures the essenceofthe word. Job37:23 leads me this way, "The ALMIGHTY—we cannot find him; he is greatin power." There may be other aspects ofthe meaning of El Shaddai, but the idea of power seems central. Three Things God's Omnipotence Implies About God The name ALMIGHTY implies that God has all the might he needs to do anything he wants to do. This view of God is confirmed over and over againin
  • 36. Scripture. We callit the omnipotence of God. Omnipotent and almighty mean virtually the same thing. In particular there are three things that God's omnipotence implies about himself. 1. He Cannot Be Stopped from Accomplishing His Purposes First, the omnipotence of God implies that he cannotbe stopped from doing what he purposes to do. Daniel 4:35 says, "The MostHigh does according to his will in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand." If God purposes with all his heart to do a thing, it simply cannot be stopped by any powerin the universe. 2. He Does WhateverHe Pleases Second, the omnipotence of Godimplies that he does whatever he pleases. Psalm115:3, says "Our God is in the heavens;he does whateverhe pleases." In Isaiah 46:9–10 Godsays, "Iam God and there is none like me . . . saying 'My counselshall stand, and I will accomplishall my purpose'." GOD ALMIGHTY is not like us. He can do whateverhe pleases. Ultimately the only thing that determines what God will accomplishand what he won't is his own will. This is what it means to be almighty or omnipotent. 3. His PowerIs Superior to All Other Powers Third, the omnipotence of God implies that his power is superior to all other powers. During the Summer Olympics one of the camera maneuvers taught me something about the greatness ofGod. The opening and closing ceremonies were thrilling to most of the people who saw them. The sheer magnitude of the crowds and fireworks and music were a once-in-a-lifetime experience of bigness and grandeur. Those of us who watchedit on television could feel some of the thrill when the camera was high enough to take in the whole greatsweepofthe coliseum. But then something strange happened. The camera continued to recede into the sky where it was perched in the helicopter, and the coliseumbecame smaller and smaller until it was just a blurry dot on the ground.
  • 37. As I watchedthat happen I was filled with joy in the greatness ofGod. I said to myself, "Look how thrilled we are with a coliseumfull of colorand sound. Look how we stand in wonder. Look how we shout and clap and feel excitement at the splendor of it all. But look againfrom God's perspective. Compared to his power and splendor, it's a blurry dot on the ground." God puts on a minor display of his strength and splendor every morning as he brings the sun up over the horizon—865,000miles thick, 1.3 million times heavier than the earth, blazing on its cooledges atone million degrees Centigrade!Every morning has its opening ceremonies to thrill us with the powerand the glory of God and fill us with hope that one day we will enter a land where all the wonders that have inspired us on this little earth will be like blurry dots in comparisonwith the magnificence of God's eternal closing ceremonies. And every night God puts out a little puppet show of his majesty in the sky, with Perseus and Andromeda and Hercules and Orion and Leo the Lion and Draco the Dragonsporting about in the localgalaxy 100,000light years across. "Dayto day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge."And what they teachso forcefully is that God is infinite in power. Nothing that has ever awedyou cancompare to him. He is GOD ALMIGHTY! Nothing can stay his hand. He does whateverhe pleases. He is the Potterand the universe is his clay. The Name God Almighty Means Three Things for Us That's what God's omnipotence implies about himself. Now I want to focus on what the name GOD ALMIGHTY means for us. I summed it up at the beginning like this: The omnipotence of God means reverence, recompense, and refuge for his covenant people. So now let's take these promises one at a time. 1. Reverence First, the omnipotence of God means reverence. In Job40:2 the Lord said to Job, "Shall a faultfinder contend with the ALMIGHTY?" The fact that God
  • 38. is almighty means that we may not contend with him. He may perplex us and we may question him in lowliness forunderstanding, but not for indictment. We may not accuse ourMaker. When we try, we set ourselves orsome court of appeals above God, and that is a horrendous sin againstthe deity of God. As St. Paul says, "Shallwhat is molded say to its molder, 'Why have you made me thus?' Has the potter no right over the clay to do with it as he pleases?" (Romans 9:20–21). But reverence is a foreign emotion to fallen human beings. Most people do not have any experience of reverence. WhereverGodis considereda pal or a sidekick ora grandfather or the religious drug of the uneducated, he cannot be revered. There are many affections you can feel for a little God, but reverence is not one of them. Isaiahsays, "The lord of hosts . . . let him be your fear, and let him be your dread." (8:13). Reverence is the combination of admiration and fear, awe and dread, wonder and terror. It's an emotion that we were made to experience. And in its absence we create motionpictures and take vacations whichdo their best to provide a substitute. We long to be awe-struck. We long for some friendly terror and some joyful dread. And the only way we will ever experience it is to know the Lord as GOD ALMIGHTY, the omnipotent. 2. Recompense Second, the omnipotence of Godmeans recompense—arecompenseofwrath upon those who do not believe the gospelof our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Thessalonians 1:8). John describes a scene in the book of Revelationof a white horse with a rider who is called Faithful and True. His eyes are like a flame of fire, he is clad in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is calledis the Word of God. The armies of heaven are in his train. "From his mouth issues a sharp swordwith which to smite the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron; he will tread the wine press of the fury of the wrath of God the ALMIGHTY" (Revelation19:15). If God is almighty, one thing is for sure—no one who resists him cansucceed. The arrogantand the unbelieving may seemfor a while to prosper. But, as Psalm73 discovers, there comes a speedy end: "Truly thou dostset them in
  • 39. slippery places;thou dost make them fall to ruin. How they are destroyedin a moment, sweptawayutterly by terrors." It is utter folly and madness to disobey the Almighty. He cannot be tricked, thwarted, or defeated. And he has appointed a day when his Sonwill tread the wine press of the fury of his wrath, because he is GOD ALMIGHTY. 3. Refuge Third, the omnipotence of God means refuge. The opposite of recompense for those who have refused the terms of God's treaty is refuge for those who have accepted. Psalm91:1–2, "He who dwells in the shelterof the MostHigh, who abides in the shadow of the ALMIGHTY, will say to the Lord, 'My refuge and my fortress;my God, in whom I trust'." Has it ever hit home to you what it means to say, "My God, who loves me and gave himself for me, is almighty"? It means that if you take your place under the shadow of the ALMIGHTY, you are protectedby omnipotence. There is infinite and unending security in the almightiness of God. The Shadow of the Almighty It was not a slip up in 1958 whenElizabeth Elliot gave to "the life and testament" of her slain husband the title, SHADOW OF THE ALMIGHTY. Jim Elliot and four other missionaries to the Aucas were killed on January 8, 1956. In 1949 whenJim Elliot was a college student, he wrote the words that have become the motto of many of our young people at Bethlehem: "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keepto gain what he cannot lose." Around the world the death of Jim Elliot and his four friends was calleda nightmare of tragedy. But Elizabeth Elliot wrote, "The world did not recognize the truth of the secondclause in Jim Elliot's credo:'He is no fool who gives what he cannot keepto gain what he cannotlose'." She calledher book SHADOW OF THE ALMIGHTY from Psalm 91:1 because she was utterly convincedthat the refuge of the people of God is not a refuge from suffering and death but a refuge from final and ultimate defeat. He who saves
  • 40. his life will lose it, but he who loses his life for the sake of the gospelwill save it—because the Lord is GOD ALMIGHTY. God did not exercise his omnipotence to deliver Jesus from the cross. Norwill he exercise it to deliver you and me from tribulation. If we have the faith and single-mindedness and courage ofJim Elliott, we might find ourselves saying with the apostle Paul, "Forthy sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regardedas sheepto be slaughtered. No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, norprincipalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God—the almighty God!—in Christ Jesus our Lord." Joy, Freedom, Power, and Obedience The omnipotence of God means eternal, unshakable refuge in the everlasting glory of God no matter what happens on this earth. And that confidence is the powerof radicalobedience to the callof God. Is there anything more freeing, more thrilling, or more strengthening than the truth that GOD ALMIGHTY is your refuge—allday every day in all the ordinary and extraordinary experiences oflife! Nothing but what he ordains for your good befalls you. And afterwardhe will receive you to glory! If we believed this, if we really let this truth of God's omnipotence get hold of us, what a difference it would make in our personallives and in our ministry as a church! How humble and powerful we would become for the saving purposes of God! Paul speaks of"the immeasurable greatness ofGod's power in us who believe." Arthur Mathews describes the secretof one of the revivals in northern India like this: It was owing to "three renewed human wills that by faith linked themselves as with hooks of steelto the omnipotent will of God . . . yearning, pleading, crying and agonizing over the church in India and the myriads of lost souls."
  • 41. The omnipotence of God means refuge for the people of God. And when you really believe that your refuge is the omnipotence of GOD ALMIGHTY, there is a joy and a freedom and a power that spills over in a life of radical obedience to the Jesus Christ. The omnipotence of God means reverence, recompense, andrefuge for his covenantpeople. I invite you to acceptthe terms of his covenantof grace:turn from sin and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, and the omnipotence of GOD ALMIGHTY will be the reverence of your soul, the recompense ofyour enemies, and the refuge of your life—forever. 019-09-12 by Andries van Niekerk In the Bible, is Jesus the Almighty and the Alpha and the Omega? Purpose I receiveda comment from a reader which claimed that Jesus Christ knew who He was, namely “the Almighty,” for that is exactly how He identified Himself, and as the Alpha and the Omega. I had a similar comment in the pastand thought that it might be wise to respond by means of a short article. The purpose of this article is, therefore, to determine whether the Bible applies titles “the Almighty” and “the Alpha and the Omega” to Jesus, andthe implications thereof. Introduction to Revelation The phrase “the Alpha and the Omega” is found only in the book of Revelation. Furthermore, of the ten times that the title “Almighty” appears in the New Testament, nine are in Revelation. Forthis reason, this article commences with a discussionof Revelation’s introduction. Jesus is distinct from God. Revelationbegins with the words:
  • 42. “The Revelationof Jesus Christ, which God gave Him” (1:1). This immediately sets a distinction betweenGod and Jesus. This distinction is repeatedin the next verse: “John, who testified to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ.” The point is not that Jesus is distinct from the Father, for that all agree, but that Jesus is distinct from God, which implies that Jesus is not God. The same John who wrote Revelationalso wrote the gospelofJohn. The opening verse of that gospelreads, (a) In the beginning was the Word, (b) and the Word was with God, (c) and the Word was God. Part (b) makes a distinction betweenGod and the Word, but part (c) informs us that “the Word was God.” A series ofarticles on the website discusses this and shows that part (c) has a specialgrammaticalconstructwhich should be translated “the Word was like God.” This is, therefore, similar to Philippians 2, which says that, before His incarnation, that Jesus “existedin the form of God.” Foris a discussionof these two passages, see: John 1:1 Jesus in Philippians Him who is and who was and who is to come Revelation1:4-5 refers to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as follows: “Him who is and who was and who is to come;” “The sevenSpirits who are before His throne;” and “Jesus Christ;” “Him who is and who was and who is to come” is, therefore, a title for the Father. The Fatheris also identified by this title is 4:8 (cf. 11:17). It is
  • 43. possible that this title is an interpretation of God’s title in Exodus 3:14, where “Godsaid to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM’”. Since “the sevenSpirits … are before His throne,” the Father is the One who is often mentioned in Revelationas “sitting on the throne” (4:2, 9, 10; 5:1, 7, 13), and who is identified as “our Lord and our God” (4:11) and as “God” (5:9, 10; 6:16; 7:10, 15;19:4). Jesus said, “I also overcame and satdown with My Fatheron His throne” (3:21). This confirms that it is the Father’s throne. Jesus has a God. 1:5-6 continues as follows: “To Him who loves us and releasedus from our sins by His blood—and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father.” The Fatheris therefore also Jesus’God. In 3:2 and 3:12 Jesus similarly refers to the Fatheras “My God:” “He who overcomes,I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write on him the name of My God“ The keyverse The purpose of the analysis above is to explain the first verse in Revelation that refers to the “Almighty,” namely 1:8, which reads as follows: “’ I am the Alpha and the Omega,’says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty’.” For the following reasons, this is the Fatherspeaking: (1) This is the One “who is and who was and who is to come,” who has been identified above as the Father. (2) He is describedas “Lord God,” and the previous verses three times made a distinction betweenGod and Jesus, and once even said that the Father is Jesus’God. This distinction betweenGod and Jesus is a consistentpattern in the New Testamentand in Revelation. See the articles:
  • 44. Does the book of RevelationpresentJesus as God? and The NT distinguishes betweenGod and Jesus. The important conclusionis as follows:Since this is the Father speaking in 1:8, it is implied that the phrases, “the Alpha and the Omega” and “the Almighty” do not refer to Jesus, but to the Father. Almighty As stated, the title “the Almighty” is used 10 times in the New Testament, but only once outside Revelation. In 2 Corinthians 6:16-18 Paul quotes from the Old Testamentand identifies “God” as “the Lord Almighty.” In Revelation “the Almighty” is used as follows: “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (1:8). “The Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come” (4:8) “Lord God, the Almighty, who are and who were” (11:17) “Those who had been victorious over the beast” sang, “Greatand marvelous are Your works, O Lord God, the Almighty.” (15:2-3) The altar says, “O Lord God, the Almighty, true and righteous are Your judgments” (Rev. 16:7) The “spirits of demons … go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them togetherfor the war of the greatday of God, the Almighty” (Rev. 16:14) “A great multitude,” says, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come’” (Rev. 19:6). “The Word of God … treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty” (Rev. 19:13-15). “I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple” (Rev. 21:22)
  • 45. In all nine instances, “the Almighty” is God. The last three instances make an explicit distinction between the Almighty and the Son (the Word of God and the Lamb). In other words, “the Almighty” is always the Father. This title is never applied to Jesus. Alpha and the Omega On the other hand, Jesus said, “I am the first and the last” (1:17; 2:8). This phrase “the Alpha and the Omega” describes the Father in 1:8, and appears twice more in Revelation. 21:5-6 reads: “He who sits on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’ … Then He said to me, ‘It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end’.” “He who sits on the throne” is the Father. In 22:12-13 an unidentified Person says: “I am coming quickly, and My rewardis with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” This could be Jesus, for: (1) Jesus in 3:11 similarly said, “I am coming quickly.” (2) Jesus is “the first and the last” in 1:17 and 2:8, and this title is never used for the Father. Whether 22:12-13 refers to the Father or to Jesus does notreally matter, for Jesus is already explicitly called “the first and the last,” and this probably has the same meaning as “the Alpha and the Omega.” Conclusion The question is then, how could Jesus be “the Alpha and the Omega” if He is not “the Almighty?” This is explained as follows: Firstly, God createdall things through Jesus.
  • 46. John, who wrote the Revelation, also wrote, “All things came into being through Him (the Word = pre-incarnate Jesus), and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being” (John 1:3; cf. Col. 1:16). The term “through” implies that God createdall things “through” the Word. This is explicit in Hebrews 1:1-2: “God… in these last days has spokento us in His Son … through whom also He made the world.” The different roles of God and the Word make a distinction betweenJesus and the Almighty Creator. We need to recognize and respectthe distinction which Revelation. and the rest of the New Testamentconsistentlymake betweenGod and Jesus. Secondly, Jesus is the Beginning. The Personor Persons in 22:13 and 21:6 are also called, “the beginning and the end.” Jesus is similarly “the Beginning of the creationof God” (3:14). This is not understood as to mean that He is a createdbeing, for He has been begotten. In fact, He is “the only begotten” (John1:14, 18; 3:16). “Begotten” is human language for a mystery which beyond human understanding, and which describes the origin of the Son. If God createdall things through the Word, then the Word already existed in the beginning. But the point here is that He Himself is “the Beginning:” “He is the beginning” (Col. 1:18). He is “the Beginning of the creationof God” (3:14). Justin Martyr also describedHim as “a Beginning.” It is therefore proposedthat God createdall things by begetting Him. Thirdly, the Word upholds the universe. A number of times we read that “in Him all things hold together” (Col. 1:17; cf. Heb. 1:3). This conceptshould not be separatedfrom the conceptthat God createdall things through Him: It is the same thing. It is therefore proposed that God upholds the universe through the Word. (The term “Word” is here
  • 47. used for the pre-incarnate Jesus, forthat is how John describedHim, not only in His pre-incarnate state (John 1:1-3) but also when He returns to earth (Rev. 19:13). Therefore, He is the Alpha and the Omega. To conclude; God exists beyond time and He createdtime. Jesus Himself is the Beginning of time and of everything else. And since “in Him all things hold together,” He is the entire existence ofthe Creation. He is, therefore, the “Alpha and the Omega” ofthe creation. But that does not make Him “Almighty” or equal to “the Almighty,” for it is still God who createdand upholds all things “through” Him. Both the Father and the Son are eternal, for both existedas long as time existed. Therefore both are the “Alpha and the Omega.” Butthey are not co-equaland co- eternal, as in the Athanasian Creed, for in the incomprehensible infinity beyond time, the Father is the Great Source that begatthe Son. Question:"What does it mean that God is Almighty?" Answer: In Hebrew, the title "God Almighty" is written as El Shaddai and probably means “God, the All-powerful One” or “The Mighty One of Jacob” (Genesis 49:24;Psalm132:2,5), althoughthere is a question among most Bible scholars as to its precise meaning. The title speaks to God’s ultimate power over all. He has all might and power. We are first introduced to this name in Genesis 17:1, when God appearedto Abram and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless.” God has many names and attributes. He is the Almighty (Genesis 49:25), the Creatorof heaven and earth (Genesis 14:19), Builder of everything (Hebrews 3:4), the King of heaven (Daniel 4:37), God of all mankind (Jeremiah 32:27),
  • 48. and the Eternal King. (Jeremiah 10:10). He is the only God (Jude 1:25), the Eternal God (Genesis 21:33), the Everlasting God(Isaiah 40:28), and Maker of all things (Ecclesiastes 11:5). He is able to do more things than we can ask or even imagine (Ephesians 3:20). He performs wonders that cannotbe fathomed and miracles that cannot be counted (Job 9:10). God’s power is unlimited. He cando anything He wants, whenever He wants (Psalm115:3). He spoke the Universe into existence (Genesis 1:3). Furthermore, He answers to no one as to His plans and purposes: “All the peoples of the earth are regardedas nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one canhold back his hand or say to him: ‘What have you done?’" (Daniel4:35). When we see Godas the Almighty, we are struck by His powerand by the fact that He is indeed a great, mighty, and awesome God(Deuteronomy10:17). The identity of God as Almighty serves to establishthe sense ofawe and wonder we have toward Him and the realization that He is God above all things without limitation. This is important in view of how He is described next in the Bible. In Exodus 6:2-3, Godsaid to Moses, “Iam the LORD. I appearedto Abraham, to Isaac and Jacobas GodAlmighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them.” How is this significant? It is significant because God, whom we previously knew only as God Almighty, has now given a new, more personal and intimate name to Moses (andIsrael). This desire on God’s part for a more personalrelationship with mankind would culminate later when God Almighty sent His only Son to earth--God in flesh--to die on the cross so that a way for forgiveness ofour sins could be provided. The factthat God Almighty would humble Himself in this way for us makes His name all the more remarkable. https://www.gotquestions.org/God-Almighty.html “Our Almighty God”

  • 50. I want to speak to you on 'Our Almighty God', and we're looking at Psalm 48 - only looking at one verse of it, but of course the contextis very important as always - beginning to read at verse 1: "Greatis the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness. Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the greatKing. God is known in her palaces fora refuge. For, lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together. They saw it, and so they marvelled; they were troubled, and hasted away. Feartook hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail. Thou breakestthe ships of Tarshish with an eastwind. As we have heard, so have we seenin the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establishit for ever. Selah. We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple. According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: thy right hand is full of righteousness. Letmount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad, because ofthy judgments. Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof. Mark ye wellher bulwarks, considerher palaces;that ye may tell it to the generation following" - and this is our verse this morning - "for this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death". Amen. I wonder have you everconsideredthat the most important thing about anyone is their thoughts of God? As we come to the Lord, let us pray that the Lord's presence may be very real to every heart gatheredhere this morning: Father, we cannotbetter the words that we have been singing, because they are basedon Your word. We thank You for this holy book. We thank You that it is God-breathed, it is without error, it is infallible truth - but Lord, we thank You that it is not just a conglomerationoflaws and rules, but it's a book that sets forth the eternal God. We thank You that through Your truth we can know You, Lord. Lord, whilst even language cannotdescribe the magnitude, magnificence, wonder, majesty of Your person, we thank You that the Bible is Your chosenmeans to declare Yourself. Oh Lord, we thank You that in the fullness of time You sent Your Son, and in these lastdays You have spokenunto us through Your Son, the Lord Jesus, the brightness of Your glory, the express image of Your Person. Lord, we would see Jesus today, the Author and Finisher of our faith.
  • 51. Lord, our eyes need to be heavenward. There is so much in this world to discourage us, and to drag us down into the mire - oh Lord, lift our eyes heavenwardnow, and let us see our God in His greatness, andour Saviour in all His beauty. May our lives be transformed for seeing Godtoday. Help us now, help me, Lord, I need Your help as we come to Your word now. For Christ's sake, Amen. I wonder have you everconsideredthat the most important thing about anyone, the most important thing about anyone, are their thoughts of God? What they think about the Almighty and, indeed, what they think about Christ - 'What think ye of Christ? Whose Son is He?'. It is the most important thing about you, what you think about deity. Indeed, I think it could be proven, if you were to study history, that no people, nation or religion has ever risen above its view of God. We hear our world view being talked about a lot these days, but our God-view colours everything in existence. It will affect religious belief, of course, most obviously, but it also affects national laws and national politics. What we think about God affects the educationalpolicy of the nation. What we think about God affects our own personaldevelopment as we go through childhood, adolescence into adulthood, into maturity - but, of course, of paramount importance: what we think about God and specificallyHis Son, Jesus Christ, affects our ownpersonal salvation. Nothing could be more important than that, therefore nothing can be more important than what your thoughts are about God and His Son, Jesus! Indeed, the Lord Jesus in that very famous passage, John14 verse 1, emphasisedthis. We often think of that passage as to do with heaven, but there's more depth than that in it. He said: 'Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me'. You see, He was pointing out that He was God's Son, and later on down the passage, verse 6, ofcourse Thomas said: 'We don't know where you're going, and we don't know how to getthere', and He said: 'I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me'. Now the problem, even for many believers today, is that after their conversionto Christ they think very little about God. I'm afraid that is to our detriment, and even more so when we considerthat we think very little about God at the expense of thinking quite a lot about ourselves.
  • 52. Christians tend to focus more today on themselves than they have everdone, and the problems that they have more than upon their problem-solving God... Indeed, a casualperusal of even Christian bookshops todaywould show you where the emphasis lies. You can go to the self-help sectionof secular bookshops, but our Christian bookshops seemto have them as well. You can see there myriads of paperbacks, hardbacks, allto do with ourselves and the problems that we have. Christians tend to focus more today on themselves than they have ever done, and the problems that they have more than upon their problem-solving God. One author I was reading recently happened to go into a Christian store and was looking at the titles of many of the books, and here were severalof them: 'Love Yourself - The Art of Learning to Love Yourself', 'Living In Your Own Shadow', 'You Can FeelGoodAbout Yourself'. He said that there was only one title of one book that he could agree with, and it was entitled 'Leave Yourself Alone'. The tragedy is that so often we are so preoccupied with ourselves that we never think of God. Let me say that, even as Christians, you might engage your thoughts with spiritual truth - and that is to be commended - but focus little on the Personof the Almighty and how the reality of His greatPerson and His attributes relates and affects our very real problems down here on Earth. Now I think we all know Isaiah 26 verse 3: 'Thou wilt keephim in perfect peace, whosemind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee' - but too often our minds are focusedon our own things, but Christian: our minds can be focusedon right things at the expense of the right One, the only One who is worthy of our attention, and indeed the only One who can actually help us in whateverneeds we have. Sadly, today, I believe that Christians have been affectedby the spirit of the age in many ways. One way is this, as A. W. Tozer put it: 'The spirit of the age, evenin the Christian, spawns greatthoughts of man, and leaves room for only small thoughts of God'. The Christian church today, I believe, has been infected by low views of God. A. W. Tozerwrote on this many times, and in one other portion he says:'The church has surrendered her once lofty concept of God and has substituted for it one so low, so ignoble as to be utterly unworthy of thinking, worshipping men. This she has done not deliberately,
  • 53. but little by little and without her knowledge - and her very unawareness only makes her situation all the more tragic'. I heard A. W. Tozerpreaching on a recording, actually condemning what he calledthese 'teddy bear gods'that men have made in their own image. He lamented that that was the cause of a hundred lesserevils among the children of God. What is your view of God like? J. B. Phillips translated a translationof the New Testamentthat's quite well known, but he wrote another book and he entitled it 'Your God Is Too Small'. Is your God, I mean your conceptof God, too small? Well, in the lastverse of Psalm48, verse 14, we read: 'For this God is our God'. Now let's not go on any further just yet: 'This God' - 'What God?', we ask. WhatGod is 'This God' that the Psalmistis talking about? Let us say first that this is not the nondescript God of post-modern pluralism. This is not the God that all roads lead to that you hear about in the media and in popular society. This is not the God who is contentto share space with other gods, other deities, in some competitive trophy cabinet of world religions. This is not the God who is content to share space with other gods, other deities, in some competitive trophy cabinet of world religions... It is not the nondescript Godof post-modern pluralism, neither is it the 'cuddly toy' versionof Godthat we find in modern Christendom. What am I talking about? Well, without going into too much detail, He is not the God that many clerics have fashionedin order to be acceptable to a politically correctsociety. This is not the God from whom has been extracted His wrath, His righteous angertowards sin. This is not the God whom liberalism presents, that has no exclusive rights and powerto redeemmen's souls. Modern Christendom has devised and invented a God that canneither condemn men nor save them, a God that can neither wound nor heal - an impotent God. Who is this God? Well, this God certainly is not the nondescript God of post- modern pluralism, He is not the cuddly toy version of God of modern Christendom - He is 'this God', the God of the Bible, the God of the Old and the New Testament, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now we see
  • 54. Him setforth graphicallyin Psalm48. Now you may have been confuseda little, and you should be, as you read the Psalm - because the Psalmist appears, apparently, to confuse the Lord Himself with the city of Zion. But that is on purpose, because the presence ofthe Lord was to dwell in Zion, and so what he is doing is: he is personificating the greatcity of Zion itself as a depiction and an illustration, a representationof the greatnessofAlmighty God who dwells in her. So He refers in verse 1 to 'a mountain of holiness', Zion is 'beautiful for situation' in loftiness, she is the joy of the whole earth - one of the wonders of the world, if you like - a royal city where the King resides, where processions parade the streets in pomp and majesty. It's set forth as a city where all the kings of the earth come to conquer, but when they arrive Zion's strength and impregnability causes themto tremble and they flee away! The greatestNavythat was knownthen was from Tarshish, and she was no match for the fortress of this city. It is an eternal city, the Psalmistsays - her towers, her bulwarks, are without number. Her walls of defence are round about her, and to look upon her would just take your breath away. There are palaces ofsplendour that generations afterwill talk about and reminisce of. What we have here is effectivelya presentation of the presence of God, as it was manifest in the holy city of Jerusalem. Verse 1, it is spokenof as 'great'. In the secondhalf of verse 1 'holy'. In verse 2 it is 'joyous'. In verse 3 it is 'a refuge'. Verses 4 through to 8 graphically depict how it is a defence. Verse 9 speaks oflovingkindness, unfailing lovingkindness;verse 10, righteousness; verse 11, justice - this is a picture of God, our greatGod! Martin Luther was one man againstthe whole empire of the Roman Church. You know the story, I'm sure, as well as I do. He had rediscoveredthe God of the Bible, not the God of the church, the God of the Old and New Testaments - incidentally, through translating the word of God. He found greatsolace through Psalm48, so much so that he wrote a hymn that went like this: 'A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing... ...And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God has willed His truth to triumph through us'.
  • 55. He is not the God that many clerics have fashioned in order to be acceptable to a politically correctsociety. This is not the God from whom has been extractedHis wrath, His righteous angertowards sin... He had such a grasp of our Almighty God, this God, that through him and severalothers - but particularly him in Europe - the Reformationcame, which was a revival in the understanding of God's word: our God, who He is, a God of grace that we canknow through faith. Our Almighty God. Now God's omnipotence, His all-powerfulness as El Shaddai, Almighty God, is a very favourite theme of the Bible. Take a few instances of it. We face, with the characters ofthe Bible, some impossible scenarios - and yet God comes up with the answer, becauseHe is the omnipotent God. You will remember Genesis 18, Sarahlaughedat the messagethat came from God, that she was to have a child so late in life. The answerthat came back was:'Is anything to hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarahshall have a son'. You know that Jobexperienced many tragedies in his life. We'll not list them, but you know how deep and piercing his experiences were -and yet, at the end of them all, when God beganto revealHimself in a new way to Job, in Job42 he said: 'I know that thou canstdo every thing, and that no thought canbe withholden from thee'. The God of the impossible! He is found again, of course, in the New Testament - the Nativity story in Luke 1:37. Mary was told, after exclaiming 'How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?': 'For nothing shall be impossible with God'. In Matthew 19 a rich young ruler can't getby his own pride, and the problem of humility comes very forcibly on the minds and hearts of the disciples. They despair: 'If this man, who has kept Your law so devotedly, cannot be saved - then who can be saved?'. The answerthe Lord Jesus gave:'With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible'. In the book of the Revelationchapter 19, after many events of the greattribulation period are passed, there are a group of people who have been looking to heaven, where our help, and our hope, and our salvationcomes from - and the Bible says that in a day that is yet to be, that greatmultitude 'as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty
  • 56. thunderings, say, Alleluia: for the Lord Godomnipotent reigneth'. God is in control, God is the Almighty! Oh, we could go on and on - Jeremiah32: 'Ah Lord GOD!behold, thou hast made the heavenand the earth by thy greatpower and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee'. The Psalmistin 62: 'God hath spokenonce; twice have I heard this; that power belongethunto God'. This God, what God? The omnipotent God, the Almighty God, this is the Godof creation. Out of nothingness, with a mere word He scatteredthe heavens and space with stars, the planets across the universe - and even to this very day and millisecond He sustains it all perfectly in equilibrium and harmony with the powerof His word. This God is the God of the burning bush, He is the God of the exodus that brought the children of Israelout of Egypt's bondage, the God of the Red Sea who took them across that greatocean miraculously. This is the Godof the smoking and the thundering mountain, where the law was given - and this is the God whose finger wrote it upon stone, and we have it to this very day. This is the God of the wilderness wanderings of the children of Israel, who sustainedthe pilgrim people through the desertfor 40 years supernaturally! This God is the Godof the prophets, ordinary men who spoke the articles of God, for this is the Godof the supernatural, this is the God of the miraculous. This is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the God who prophesied His birth hundreds of years before it happened. This is the God who, by His Spirit, conceivedHis divine and yet human life in the womb of a virgin teenager. This is the God who spoke to His Son and through His Son, and wrought wonders in this world that it has never seennor will ever see the like of! This is the God who, in Christ, reconciledthe world unto Himself. This is the God who raised the dead corpse ofHis Son back to life again, which is the greatestdisplayof God's powerin the New Testament. Is it any wonder that Paul the apostle could cry with a heart of intercessionfor the Ephesians: 'I wish that you could know that power!'. Modern Christendom has devised and invented a God that canneither condemn men nor save them, a God that can neither wound nor heal - an impotent God...
  • 57. 'What is the exceeding greatnessofhis powerto us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raisedhim from the dead, and sethim at his own right hand in the heavenly places' - do you know that power? Do you know this God? I'm told that poweris measured in megatons, and one megatonis the explosive equivalent to a million tons of TNT. Well, that is nowhere near to the powerof Almighty God! Isaac Watts put it like this: 'I sing the almighty powerof God, That made the mountains rise, That spread the flowing seas abroad, And built the lofty skies'. This God - what God? Almighty God- but something else:whose Godis this God? 'For this God is our God' - whose God? Our God! Now I know this Psalmis a Psalmof the Israelites, and He was the God of Israel - but, you know, the New Testamentis all about this: that through His Son, the Lord Jesus, this God canbe our God! He has come to show us Himself in His Son, John 14 verse 1: 'You believe in God' - this God- 'believe also in me'. John 1 verse 18: 'No man hath seenGod at any time; the only begottenSon, which is in the bosomof the Father, he hath declaredhim' - and so the miracle of the incarnation is not just the virgin birth, but that the Lord Jesus Christ is God walking among men! There's a greatmystery where the incarnation is concerned. 'Without controversy', Paul said, 'great is the mystery of godliness:God manifest in the flesh'. We cannotknow everything about how His divine nature and His human nature are related, but there's one thing that's absolutelysure: when our Lord Jesus, the Word of God, came in human flesh - now listen carefully - He did not ceaseto be what He always was, as God, but He became something that He had never been, man. Why do I say that? Simply because Christis God acting as Himself. Christ is God acting as Himself among men. The Lord said to Philip: 'If you've seenme, you have seenthe Father'. The point here is that our Lord Jesus Christ, when He came to earth and was clothed in human
  • 58. flesh - though, as Philippians says correctly, He emptied Himself; He only emptied Himself of the outward glory of deity that was manifest from before the world began- but He didn't lose one attribute of His deity, that's an utter impossibility. Everything that it means to be God, the Lord Jesus Christ was. Now, of course, it is true generallythat, in His life down here on earth, He voluntarily relinquished the use of many of His attributes. He chose to live as a man among men, as a man totally dependent upon God - but He was still God, and He still had all the attributes. There were times when that power broke through, the Transfigurationis an illustration of that - but you remember the Lord Jesus saidto the religious body of His day: 'Destroythis temple, and in three days' - He didn't say 'God will raise it from the dead', He said 'I will raise it from the dead'. In John 10 He says that 'The Father loves me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have powerto take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father' - and this is the point: while He came in humility, and He didn't graspat His divine attributes to live His life down here on earth, this is your Lord, if you're a Christian today! He's as much Almighty God as the Fatherin heaven! BecauseHe was made flesh, because ofHis incarnation, He now understands what it is to be flesh. He never ceasedto be what He always was, but He has now become something that He had never been: a man. He understands our struggles: 'Jesus knows allabout our struggles, He will guide till the day is done; There's not a friend like the lowly Jesus, No, not one! No, not one!'. Now I want to challenge you just now: can you say'This God is my God'? Is He your God? He's not your God if you're not saved! But here's where the difference is made: not only does He understand it because He was flesh, but because He is Almighty God He cando something about it! Is that not wonderful? He canhelp us. Someone said, rightly so, 'As
  • 59. Christians we never come closerto omnipotence than when we pray in the name of the Lord Jesus'. I think that's wonderful. It's as if the Lord Jesus were making the request of the Father! Now I want to challenge you just now: can you say 'This God is my God'? Is He your God? He's not your God if you're not saved! He's not your God if you have never come to the position of realising that you're a sinner and realising that Christ was sent to die for your sins, and that you by faith must partake of that. Oh, that today you would get a glimpse of this wonderful God, and how He has revealedHimself in the magnificent Saviour - you would say, like old Jacobas he vowed:'If God will be with me, then shall he be the LORD my God'. Is He your chosenGodand portion for evermore? Maybe you are saved, and like many Christians - as I said in my introduction today - you have lostsight of your God, of who He really is. You can't say, like Paul said, 'I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded' - you don't know as sure as you used to, you're not as persuaded as you used to be. Maybe there are situations in your life that you think are insolvable, no answerto them - you're not listening: this God is your God. This God is your Saviour, and: 'The Saviour can solve any problem, The tangles of life can undo. There's nothing too hard for Jesus, There's nothing He cannot do!'. Oh, it's wonderful. This God - what God? The Almighty God. Whose God? Our God. Another question: for how long? 'Forever and ever'. Verse 14: 'He will be our guide even unto death' - even unto death, and sure, anyway, afterwards. If you're savedand He's your God, you'll be with Him after death. This just means:for an eternity. Does that not mean something to you, believer? 'Nevertheless I am continually with thee', the Psalmistcould say, 'thou hast holden me by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterwardreceive me to glory... Surely goodness andmercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever' - for everand ever, even unto death.
  • 60. Now I know - look - I know I'm not telling you anything new this morning. You could have stoodup here and saidexactly the same as I've said to you, but I think you're missing the point if that's what you're thinking now: are you, in your heart of hearts, laying hold of this Almighty God? Our Almighty God? Are you reckoning Him as your God? Is He the One whom your focus is on in the problems you're in, in the crises that are going on in our nation and our world, in your illness, in your domestic problems? Is this God real to you? Many of us start to look within for strength, and you don't find it - and you'll not find it, for looking within for strength is like casting the anchorinside the boat, it'll do you no good... Do you know what happens? Many of us start to look within for strength, and you don't find it - and you'll not find it, for looking within for strength is like casting the anchor inside the boat, it'll do you no good. Here's a formula you need to remember, and it's been a greatblessing to me: 'To be occupiedwith self will bring despair' - some of you know all about that, I do - 'To be occupiedwith self will bring despair. To be occupiedwith others will bring disappointment. But to be occupiedwith the Saviour will bring delight'. 'Thou wilt keephim in perfectpeace, whose mind is stayed on thee'. I love reading biographies, missionarybiographies, and stories ofChristians of bygone eras. I read a story just last week aboutElizabeth Elliot whose husband, of course, was martyred by the Auca Indians in South America. She, later on in her life, visited China and went to a home of the China Inland Mission. The story goes thatshe walkedinto that very sparse place, and she saw a picture, a text on the wall - but it wasn't Scripture. It had a verse on it that read like this, listen this is powerful: 'The sun stoodstill, the iron did float, this God is our God for everand ever. He shall be our guide even unto death'. If you don't know what those two things are, you need to read your Bible more. The sun stoodstill, the iron did float. She went on to remark that, having seenthat, listen carefully: 'This God, the One who, in answerto prayers of an ordinary man, stopped the sun in its course, the God who suspended His own law of gravity and made an axe head float, this is the God to whom I come. This God is the One whose promises I am counting on - and can He help me out of my predicament? Whatevermy predicament may be,
  • 61. as soonas I compare it with the circumstances surrounding the miracles of the sun and the axe, my doubts seemcomical'. This God - what God? Almighty God. Whose God? Oh, if you're saved:your God, my God. Forhow long? Forever and ever, even unto death. Let's all bow our heads, just for a moment please, and just in the quietness - because I'm afraid some of you are going to miss this, maybe most of you - two words: This God, this God! The God of the Bible is your God, and I'll tell you: He's not dead, and He's not asleep. He is the God who is, and is not silent - but some of you, it's a long time from you've heard His voice, it's a long time since you've seenHis face. Maybe it's a long time since you've been at the Table to remember what He did? Oh, that you would grasp hold of this: He's your God, and I'll tell you there's nothing, nothing, that will transform your life more than that realisation. Father, oh how pitiful our attempts are, and we say it reverently: even Your holy infallible truth cannot communicate all that it is to be God, all that Your poweris. Oh Father, may we be overwhelmed, and may our hardened hearts be melted as we gaze upon the ungazeable, and we touch the intangible, as we draw near to the One whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere. Immortal, invisible, God only wise - and yet the One who, in His Son, deigned to become fleshfor us. May we get a fresh glimpse of that now as we linger at the Table, Amen. ------------------------ Back to Top Transcribedby: PreachThe Word. October2008 www.preachtheword.com
