How it began….
 IPAC-CO2 approached our school
division and asked us to create some
resources that could be used in school to
teach students about carbon capture
and storage.
Rationale
 Province of Saskatchewan is a global
leader in Carbon Capture
 Keep curriculum current with local
emerging technology
 Importance of educating our future
leaders about sustainability
 Absence of resources concerning the
issue of global emissions
Background

investigations
 Integrated differentiation to meet the needs
of the diverse learners
 First Nations and Metis perspectives
 Bilingual curriculum links to Grades 3, 7, & 10
National Recognition
 The Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) on
Education for Sustainable Development
(ESD) provides recognition to innovative
projects, research and other activities
promoting Education for Sustainable
Development and the Regina Catholic
School Carbon Capture and the
Environment resources will be recognized
at this event!
Challenges
 Contract with IPAC-CO2 dissolved
 External Peer Review, French Translation
and Video Production changed at the
last moment
 Disseminating the materials to teachers in
our division and across the province
Distribution and
Integration into Classrooms
 Distribution has begun but much more is
needed
 The KEY to integration into the classrooms
is teacher training. Our product is teacher
friendly and classroom ready but teachers
still need to be aware of the product and
briefed on how and when this can be
used.
 This is costly
Further Development
 Integration into other grade levels/courses
such as Grade 6, Environmental Science 20
and Earth Science 30
 Cross-curricular Units Developed for K-8 with
fiction and non-fiction books created
 Grade 9 - 12 Units – our focus was on science
but there are many other areas this can be
extended into – Mathematics, Social Studies,
Economics, Christian Ethics
 Further development takes time and money

  • 2. How it began….  IPAC-CO2 approached our school division and asked us to create some resources that could be used in school to teach students about carbon capture and storage.
  • 3. Rationale  Province of Saskatchewan is a global leader in Carbon Capture  Keep curriculum current with local emerging technology  Importance of educating our future leaders about sustainability  Absence of resources concerning the issue of global emissions
  • 4. Background  Found Curriculum Alignment – Grades 3, 7,10  Created and Signed Contract with IPAC- CO2  Found Team of Teachers  Educated team of teachers about CCS  Provided team with time to Develop and Write
  • 5. Saskatchewan Curriculum  K-12 Aim of Science – develop scientific literacy within context of Euro-Canadian and Indigenous heritages (empirical and rational knowledge of nature)
  • 6. K-12 Goals of Science  Understand the Nature of Science and STSE (Science, Technology, Society, and the Environment) Interrelationships  Construct Scientific Knowledge  Develop Scientific and Technological Skills  Develop Attitudes that support Scientific Habits of Mind
  • 7. Grade Specific Curriculum  Our Resources highlight the K-12 Aims and Goals as well are align with grade specific outcomes and indicators.  Grade 3 – 1 Outcome/1 Indicator  Grade 7 – 4 Outcomes/11 Indicators  Grade 10 - 6 Outcomes/15 Indicators  Content builds from each grade level.
  • 8. Vision  A series of lessons that introduce the students to elemental carbon, the carbon cycle, nature`s carbon sinks, and carbon capture technologies  Multimedia platform that includes hands-on activities, videos, and inquiry based investigations  Integrated differentiation to meet the needs of the diverse learners  First Nations and Metis perspectives  Bilingual curriculum links to Grades 3, 7, & 10
  • 9. National Recognition  The Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) provides recognition to innovative projects, research and other activities promoting Education for Sustainable Development and the Regina Catholic School Carbon Capture and the Environment resources will be recognized at this event!
  • 10. Challenges  Contract with IPAC-CO2 dissolved  External Peer Review, French Translation and Video Production changed at the last moment  Disseminating the materials to teachers in our division and across the province
  • 11. Distribution and Integration into Classrooms  Distribution has begun but much more is needed  The KEY to integration into the classrooms is teacher training. Our product is teacher friendly and classroom ready but teachers still need to be aware of the product and briefed on how and when this can be used.  This is costly
  • 12. Further Development  Integration into other grade levels/courses such as Grade 6, Environmental Science 20 and Earth Science 30  Cross-curricular Units Developed for K-8 with fiction and non-fiction books created  Grade 9 - 12 Units – our focus was on science but there are many other areas this can be extended into – Mathematics, Social Studies, Economics, Christian Ethics  Further development takes time and money
